THE HISTORY
Milliken Creek Inn’s history dates back to the mid-1850s, when the Main House was used as the stagecoach stop on Old Mountain Road, now the famous Silverado Trail. Its proximity to the Napa River made it the perfect resting stop for weary travelers during California’s Gold and Silver Rush years.

Once the Gold and Silver Rushes were over, the house ceased to be a stagecoach stop. It was at this time during the turn of the century that famed horticulturist Ira McKenzie took up residence at the home, leaving a legacy of beautiful tree specimens including our Japanese Maple, Live Oak, and Magnolia trees that are still alive today, as well as the Valley Oaks fronting the Silverado Trail.

It wasn’t until 1980 that the house returned to its roots as a hostelry, with stints as both The Black Surrey Inn and The Country Garden Inn before an extensive renovation gave us Milliken Creek Inn. In 2013, Milliken Creek Inn joined the prestigious Four Sisters Inn luxury collection as a premier pampering hideaway on the banks of the Napa River.

Milliken Creek Inn recently underwent a sweeping redesign to all guestrooms and shared spaces in Spring 2021. Custom-made furnishings, curated art, modern lighting and gorgeous hardwood floors are all enveloped by serene hues of the natural landscape.

A former private estate that is now an exclusive hotel. Casa Palopò for sophisticated travellers offers both a boutique hotel experience as well as a detached, private villa. Rich Guatemalan colors, art, furnishings and heirlooms surround guests with the unique culture of Guatemala.

Perched in a spectacular fashion above beautiful Lake Atitlán in the Guatemalan Highlands. Casa Palopó is a place for relaxation on the banks of one of the country’s greatest draws. An especially noteworthy feature is the helipad on-site; many visitors skip the three-hour drive from Guatemala City and arrive via helicopter.

The living area of the main hotel building provides a comfortable place for guests to relax and peruse the amazing collection of photographs, artisan work and antiques that fill the space.

This area opens up with wide glass doors to the terrace and restaurant, with views of the lake below and three volcanoes on the horizon; and allows the breezes and sunshine to flow in. To the left of this area is a cozy bar with an authentic, old-fashioned jukebox and small seating area to enjoy a handcrafted cocktail created just for you.

There are two solar-heated pools: one at the main building, and another (with an infinity edge) above at the villa with a hot tub. Both pools feature oversized lounge chairs. A small fitness gym is available. Spa treatments can be booked in the privacy of the guest rooms or a small on-site treatment room.

The staff can also set up a variety of cultural tours and ecotourism activities around Lake Atitlán and its surrounding towns. A small handicraft shop selling authentic Mayan arts and crafts is also on-site.

Villa PALOPÓ
It has three spacious and comfortable rooms with three-poster beds, made of mahogany, covered with fine Italian linens. Private bathrooms have tubs overlooking the lake, tiled floors and separate showers. These rooms can be rented individually, or you can rent the entire villa.

Guests who rent the full Villa have access to a large room with fireplace, patios and terraces, from where a 180 degree view of the lake, a modern kitchen that can be served by our chef and butler. There is an exclusive heated infinity pool and hot tub for guests of the Villa.

With a view on the horizon is mixed with the lake and volcanoes. On one side of the pool is a gazebo with a fireplace and couches to rest.  The Villa is located about 150 steps up from the main building Hotel and Restaurant 6.8 Palopo. The Villa is suitable for friends or a family that is looking for three rooms.

SUITES
Fifteen spacious rooms are uniquely decorated with contemporary and indigenous Guatemalan artwork, that hangs on bright stucco walls. Wooden beams span overhead, with cool italian linens draping across the beds. Private terraces are furnished with wooden lounges, creating the perfect nook to absorb the views.

Master Suite SANTA CATARINA
Decorated with paintings by artists from Guatemala, blue walls, fine furniture, a sofa, a desk, chair, closet, a safe and a mini bar.

It has a large terrace, which has a sofa and two sun beds and an excellent view of the lake where you can sit and read or watch the sunset over the lake and volcanoes. It has a table and two chairs, to prepare a romantic dinner on the balcony. Its spacious bathroom has shower tiles and a fine lake view.

Suite SANTA CLARA
With lavender sponge-painted walls, this suite’s king-sized bed is framed in auburn wood and faces directly toward Lake Atitlan’s signature views.

Lamps hang from the ceilings on each side of the bed, and the adjacent living room area features a large plush sofa and oversized woven sitting pillows with natural wool wrapped mirrors that hang from the walls. A sliding barn door to the bathroom is a focal point of the room.

Junior Suite SANTIAGO
Bright teal walls are paired with sister shades of blue and white; this junior suite includes a king-sized bed, floor-to-ceiling windows draped in cotton linens, and design elements that go with the rest of the suite’s trendy, colorful scheme. Feel the cool breeze on the volcano-front balcony and enjoy the views.

ROOMS

The first boutique hotel in Cusco of 5 stars, Inkaterra La Casona is located in the traditional Plaza de las Nazarenas, surrounded by vibrant, cobblestoned streets. NEARBY RUINS
Enjoy a private guided excursion through Cusco’s four main ruins:Explore Sacsayhuamán, which in Quechua means “satisfied falcon,” considered a religious and military significance.

It is the most impressive ruin close to the city of Cusco, where the yearly Inti Raymi festival (Sun Cult feast) is celebrated. Then view the Puca Pucará, or “red fort;” thought to be a hunting lodge, this rock structure looks pink in some lights.

Later visit Qenko, which means “zigzag” in Quechua — a ruin that consists of a large limestone riddled with niches, steps and carving, including zigzagging channels that gave the site its name. Finally, visit Tambomachay (Cavern Lodge), commonly referred to as the Baños del Inca or Inca baths. Tambomachay was a site for ritual bathing.

AROUND THE CITY
Visit the Cathedral, San Blas church and Koricancha. Begin this excursion with an intimate tour of the Cusco Cathedral and get to know this superb symbol of the city closely, including its 11 chapels, 1 vestry, 7 altarpieces and 1 lower chorus completely carved in Cedar from Cusco, more than 300 paintings, and a variety of carvings and sculptures.

The highlight of all these is the Main Altar, covered entirely with layers of silver as well as the Silver Chariot, mounted on a pedestal, still used in processions during the religious festival of Corpus Christi.

Then visit the church of San Blas, one of Cusco’s most picturesque communities. Finish your day with a visit to one of the most important temples in the Incan Empire dedicated to Wiracocha; Sun god or creator. Its former pre-Inca construction of adobe and unpolished quartz lasted until the 12th century and when the Incas took over, they called it Koricancha (“courtyard of gold”).

The Church of Santo Domingo was built using the ruined foundations of the temple that were flattened by the Spanish in the 17th century and is a fine example of where Inca stonework has been incorporated into the structure of a colonial building.

CHINCHERO
On the way to your excursion, you will see some of the most scenic spots in the Sacred Valley. Visit the traditional Andean village of Chinchero located in the highlands of Anta. The visit combines Inca archeological sites, typical Andean community, a colonial church, and a colorful market which to date, on its “market day” practice the tradition of “barter” goods.

MARAS AND MORAY
Enjoy a private guided trip to Maras Salt Mines and the circular terraces of Moray. On the way you will see some of the most scenic spots in the Sacred Valley. First, visit the ancient salt mines near the village of Maras, where salty springs emerge from the hillside and the Incas built terraces to capture the flows and harvest salt.

Continue the excursion to Moray, where huge circular agricultural terraces were built by the Incas on limestone sinks served to plant various crops. It is said to have a cosmological significance, however, the Incas used the terraces as an agricultural laboratory to determine the optimum conditions for each species in varying altitudes.

PISAC AND AWANACANCHA
Visit one of Sacred Valley’s finest and most impressive Inca complex, the archaeological site of Pisac, with terraces built on its hills. To visit the site, you must walk along winding paths on a mountain cliff.

Among the most important buildings are Pisaca, which is a curved wall; the Intihuatana, a solar clock among a group of temples and the military zone called “Q’Allaqasa”.

Also visit its colorful market where an artisans’ fair takes place, an exhibit and sale of fine woven crafts, colorful tapestries, handicrafts and textiles from Pisac and neighboring villages. Stop at Awanacancha, where you can meet native weavers and see South American camelid species, including llamas, alpacas, guanacos and vicuñas.

OUTDOOR JACUZZI AND STEAM ROOMS
You can enjoy a relaxing soak in the spa’s piping hot outdoor Jacuzzi overlooking a glorious view of the lake before heading to the steam room to detox your skin and get your blood circulating – or vice versa. Towels are provided.

Relaxing in the steam room and Jacuzzi is also recommended before indulging in a spa service, like a relaxing holistic massage or hot stone therapy (see price list*). Always remember to shower before and after using the Jacuzzi and steam rooms.

The steam room and spa Jacuzzi are scheduled for guests to use from 5pm – 7pm. To use the Jacuzzi and steam rooms outside these times, ask at reception for availability or reserve a spa service. Alternatively, use the Jacuzzi next to the heated infinity pool.

HEATED POOL TIME
The newest addition to Sierra Lago, the heated infinity swimming pool is a delightful feature to ensure your retreat in the Sierra Madre Mountains is totally idyllic. The warm temperature of the pool and steamy temperature of its adjoining hot tub are very tempting to contrast the often cool mountain air of Sierra Lago.

When the sun shines, you might also want to catch some rays lounging by the pool before engaging in more active pastimes at the resort & spa. There really is something for everyone at Sierra Lago.

AMATEUR FISHING
With a water surface of 24 hectares and depth that is unknown (due to how they can’t find its bottom!), Lake Juanacatlán at Sierra Lago is a great spot for recreational fishing. Experienced fishermen can borrow fishing rods and gear from reception, children will need to be accompanied by an adult. Fishing lessons can also be arranged.

As is customary, we ask you to return small fish to the lake and take only larger fish. Any fish that you catch can be prepared by Sierra Lago’s chef or taken home, as you wish.

PLANT A TREE
As part of our commitment to protect the environment and foster respect for nature, our plant a tree activity and on-going program is designed to contribute to the reforestation of the natural forest that surrounds Sierra Lago.

As well as being a fun activity, the program at large is intended to raise awareness of the need to plant trees and protect the world’s forests as a means of limiting desertification in vulnerable countries and ensuring the essential life-giving supplies of oxygen that our world’s forests bestow on the world.

FRUITY PRESERVE PREPARATION
A seasonal activity at Sierra Lago, learn how to preserve fruits the traditional way, following instructions from our chef in a delightful demonstration. Each year Sierra Lago enjoys abundant harvests of apples and peaches, amongst other fruits, which find themselves on the menu in various forms.

The excess fruits that hang on our trees are preserved into jams, compotes and a traditional Mexican preserve known as ate. Ate is best described as a hardened jelly, and is available on the menu throughout the year, customarily served with cheese. Take advantage of this year’s apple and peach harvests to enjoy a special demonstration, perfect for taking some tips back home.

HORSEBACK RIDING
Horseback riding for newbies and “old-hands” alike is set to enchant and captivate your imagination. Experienced riders can take one of our excellently groomed and cared for horses for a ride around the lake, or explore some of the woodland with a guide.

Children should be accompanied by an adult or escorted by a guide with horse in tow, all of which can be arranged by speaking to the stable-hand or activities team.

If you are wary of riding a horse but would like to try horseback riding for the first time, take a moment to visit the stables and get to know our horses before arranging to join a guide to take you on a round of the lake. We have some of the most friendly and well-kept horses; it would be a shame to miss out on meeting them.

CARRIAGE RIDE
Lake Juanacatlán is the perfect setting to take a dreamy horse-driven carriage ride. Frequently chosen as an enchanting addition for weddings at Sierra Lago, guests can enjoy a turn of the lake by horse and carriage daily from 10am – 5pm, making sure to inform Reception to reserve a place.

The horse and carriage will take you to the chapel and back, passing the Margaritas Games Room and many sculptures on the way. This is certainly one of the resort’s most magical activities you won’t want to pass up.

SPORTS FACILITIES
At Sierra Lago, there is no chance for you to get bored. If the bewitching surroundings were not enough to keep your hypnotized, then you may wish to enjoy some team sports or a game of tennis. Near the games room, you will find a multi-use court for tennis and basketball, while near the swimming pool and Terrace Restaurant, there is a soccer pitch.

FUN ON THE LAKE
One of the top attractions at Sierra Lago is the free use of non motorized water sport equipment for guests staying at the resort & spa. Spending some time having fun on Lake Juanacatlán is the perfect way to discover the true magic of Sierra Lago, whether trying your hand at paddle boarding, peddle-boating or kayaking.

All water sport equipment should be returned to the water’s edge near the Reception building when you have finished having fun on the lake, and is subject to availability. To make sure that everyone has a chance to use the equipment, intervals of 45 minutes are recommended during busy times.

Please use the life jackets provided and read the Lake Safety Rules on display alongside the equipment. We kindly advise you that swimming in the lake is not permitted for your own safety and you are asked to save swimming for our heated pool.

MOUNTAIN HIKE
For those in good shape and eager for an adventure into the Sierra Madre Mountains, our Mountain Hike activity that takes place every day (except Wednesdays) will get your blood pumping at high altitude and your limbs fully exercised.

The idyllic Mountain Hike is guided by an expert in the natural surroundings at Sierra Lago, who will lead you through the majesty of mother nature as far as La Bufa at the top of one of the most picturesque mountains.

The length of the hike will depend on the fitness of those who wish to take part in the free activity and can be made shorter to accommodate guests’ preferences, bearing in mind that it can be quite steep in places. Likewise, when planned previously with the guide, you can reach the top of the mountain by climbing, which will take about half an hour longer

On the Mountain Hike, you can expect to see a range of harmless wildlife, such as deer, rabbits, birds, red tailed eagles and woodpeckers and also enjoy extraordinary views of Mascota, Valle de Galope and volcanoes in the distance.

NIGHT WITH THE COSMOS
One of the stunning features of Sierra Lago is just how dark it gets at night. Far from the light contamination of urban areas, the stars and moon are impressively clear, even with the naked eye.

During our Night with the Cosmos activity, you will be able to use the telescope to take a closer look at the constellations and planets that make their transits across the heavens, as well as, the surface of the moon. Our guide will help you locate the planets that are visible and name the constellations that you can see.

This activity changes location and time depending on when and where the moon rises, as well as, the position of the most interesting planets – you will be informed by the activities team of the location each Thursday. Remember to bring a scarf for the cold and to protect your neck when looking upwards.

BIKE RIDE
Bikes are available for guests to use on the path that circuits the lake all day until nightfall. Delight in the cool mountain breeze blowing through your hair as you converse with nature on a leisurely bike ride, taking care when you see horseback riders or the horse and carriage.

Guests can borrow bicycles from the bike shed half way between the Reception building and swimming pool, next to the fire pit where the bonfire nights take place.

For the comfort and convenience of everyone, we ask you to return the bicycles to the shed once you have finished your bike ride, so that other guests may use them. If you have a problem with the bike chain, please inform a member of staff so we can fix it as soon as possible.

HISTORY BEGINS IN 1962

Overlooking the sparkling waters of Banderas Bay and the red clay-rooftops that dot the Sierra Madre Mountains, the setting is irresistible.

Its little wonder that screen legends Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, as famous for their passionate romance as for their award-lavished movies, chose the casitas that now comprise Casa Kimberly as their beloved home-away-from-home.

The luxurious nine-suite boutique hotel, with an open-air rooftop restaurant, tequila bar, pool and an intimate spa, was lovingly created from the quaint side-by-side houses once owned by the star-crossed couple.

Casa Kimberly’s history begins in 1962, when Burton came to the sleepy fishing village of Puerto Vallarta to star in director John Huston’s classic The Night of the Iguana.

Burton and Taylor had met a few years before, on the set of Cleopatra, and were in the whirl of a scandalous romance—she was still married to Eddie Fisher, he to Sybil Williams.

Elizabeth Taylor Suite
The Elizabeth Taylor suite, accessed via a private elevator or hand-painted tile steps leading from the central courtyard, is a more than 2500 square-foot sanctuary of tranquil opulence.

The wrap-around terrace, completely secluded, has its own pool and Jacuzzi, and offers panoramic views of the sparkling waters of Banderas Bay and the majestic Sierra Madre mountains, just as Taylor and Burton would have seen them.

Over the magnificent Mexican Colonial style bed, a Swarovski crystal chandelier illuminates the hand-painted winged cherubim gracing an elegant dome.

The bath, nearly as spacious as the bedroom, features the original pink-marble heart-shaped tub that Taylor commissioned for Casa Kimberly. (Perhaps the result of a translation glitch, the tub arrived in the amorphous shape of real heart rather than as a symmetrical Valentine.)

Marble pillars and the stairs leading to the raised tub add a regal note to this exquisite aerie.

The Iguana Restaurant & Tequila Bar

Casa Kimberly’s open air restaurant, The Iguana, overlooks the city of Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay and serves contemporary Mexican cuisine in an elegant but informal ambience.

Retractable walls take advantage of gentle coastal breezes and crystal chandeliers add soft light while water dances in the adjacent courtyard fountain. The dining room wraps around to an outdoor patio with shady palms and another central fountain.

Since its creation, the Casa Pestagua was designed as an aristocrat’s palace, and to communicate an impressive majesty. For this reason, the mansion was built according to the purest Moorish palace style, an influence that continued to be important in 16th and 17th Century Spanish and colonial architecture.

A refreshing and majestic hall leads to the patio, around which the mansion is situated. This particularly extensive patio, with its 8 palm trees and water fountain, shows the importance of its construction as it leads to the backyard which offers guests the pleasure of modern comforts with its pool and solarium.

WATERFALLS TRAIL (2.8 MILES)
A switchback adventure along the Mystery Trail. Departing from the Reception Area, the route mixes ascents and descents as it borders the Gorrión River on its way to the three on-property waterfalls. Although the altimetry is not as challenging, the trail is rocky and muddy. Overall, it is a fun way to experience the forest.

CROSS COUNTRY TRAIL (7.8 MILES)
Suitable for most level. It features a variety of ascents and descents, including intense downhill sections. The terrain is rocky and presents a good amount of mud. The Trail crosses the forest and meanders along the banks of the Gorrión River.

RÍO AGRIO TRAIL (7.6 MILES)
A switchback route through asphalt, gravel, and challenging single tracks that make it dreamy for experienced cyclists.

RÍO SEGUNDO MTB ROUTE
This switchback route combines asphalt and gravel roads with difficult stretches that make it only suitable for experienced cyclists. he ride crosses the rural community of Los Bajos del Toro Amarillo.

Eco Infinity Swimming

The Lodge at Chaa Creek is making a splash with our beautifully appointed, fresh water swimming pool which is added to the numerous onsite activities that Chaa Creek offers, and combines to make Chaa Creek an extra special holiday destination.

The eco-friendly swimming pool was built with both adults and children in mind. Its bi-level configuration allows for swimming and paddling pools, as well as generous lounging space for dining, sun bathing and relaxation.

The total capacity of the pool is a whopping 46,000 gallons, 45,000 gallons in the main pool area and 1,000 gallons in children’s paddling pool. The size is 60ft long and 20ft wide with a depth of 4.7 ft. The pool’s Green credential is facilitated by the IntelliChlor Electronic Chlorine Generator (IECG).

This sanitation system uses a salt chlorinator to create a process known as electrolysis which produces a chlorine gas that immediately dissolves into a solution creating Hypochlorite, a pool and spa water sanitizer.

Hypochlorite kills bacteria, oxidizes organic material, and kills algae, then reverts back to salt. A low concentration of salt added to the pool water is the only sanitizer used. The IECG then reuses the salt and the process starts over again.

It is equipped with current audio/visual equipment. The light and airy building has highly flexible furniture and comfortable chairs with superior lumbar support. The conference tables can be used to create a variety of configurations within minutes to accommodate the needs of your presentation style.

The podium has a public address system with cordless microphones. A television with VCR over-head, slide and multi-media projectors are available for business meetings.

Close to the rainforest of the Maya Mountains and granite uplands of central Belize, it is strategically placed within easy driving distance of the Mountain Pine Ridge, Caracol, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech and El Pilar Maya Temples, the Chumpiate Cave, Vaca Falls and the 220 square mile Tikal National Park.

Maya Organic Farm

The 33 acre Maya Organic Farm is an integral part of the Chaa Creek Reserve; It provides freshly harvested produce for The Lodge at Chaa Creek and the Macal River Camp.

The farm integrates traditional Maya farming with more advanced systems of irrigated raised beds of composted soil fed with nutrients derived from natures store house. Few people, including our native Belizeans, understand the complexity of the Mayas organic farming techniques.

The indigenous Maya have survived for over 2000 years on subsistence farming for home use, barter, and sale as the backbone of their existence. They have used resources supplied by nature to nourish the soil and protect their crops from insect devastation.

Costly chemicals were simply not an option and their continuing methodology has clearly stood the test of time.. As part of our many onsite activities we offer guided horseback riding tours to the Maya Farm where our guests get the opportunity to experience how the Maya farmed.

You get to see all the different fruits and vegetables that are grown and the different organic farming methods with soil enrichment that are used based on a five-year rotation plan using Makuna beans and Lucina as nitrogen fixers.

Cacao, root crops, and vegetables planted on the farm oftentimes can only be found in the older Mayan settlements. Freshly harvested organic fruits and vegetables from our traditional Maya Farm are complimented by local dairy and meat products to create a distinct flavor of the Caribbean and Latin American region.

Horse Stables

Chaa Creek maintains a stable of well-groomed riding horses that are suited for all levels of riding experience. Our guided rides traverse the trails of the Chaa Creek Nature Reserve through sub-tropical broadleaf forest past ancient Maya sites.

As you ride along, your naturalist guide will highlight the various unique plant and wildlife species native to the reserve. Optional rides to the MAYA ORGANIC FARM may also be arranged.

Horseback riding tours are now offered twice a day; the first at 9:00am and the other at 1:30pm. Whether you’re just out for an afternoon hike or planning a more extensive exploration, our licensed naturalist guides are always ready to make your experience both intellectually and physically challenging.

Private Nature Reserve in Belize

Our Belize Eco Resort has a picturesque trail network that will take you to many different areas of our 400-acre nature reserve. All of the trails are numbered as shown on our comprehensive trail map that can be requested from our concierge office or with any of our friendly members of staff.

For your comfort, we suggest hiking boots or tennis shoes and sunscreen or a cap. Feel free to explore on your own and at your leisure or join a guided tour and interact with an exotic tropical environment. Natural History Center

Situated at the top of the hill behind the cottages, the Chaa Creek Natural History Center takes students and visitors along a fascinating time line, which begins with prehistoric land formation through to the shifting of the continents.

Visitors are able to see the movement of life in Belize through the ages; from Mayan temples in the steaming jungle to modern day traditional healers.

On one hand we provide a comprehensive introduction to the history and geography of Belize while on the other we provide visual displays of archaeological artifacts, butterflies, moths, insects and amphibians that capture the curiosity of young children, students and scientists alike.

The forested area surrounding the Centre has become an educational destination which, combined with the Rainforest Medicine Trail, this offers an excellent opportunity to study medicinal and useful plants.

Blue Morpho Butterfly Exhibit

The Blue Morpho Butterfly Farm continues to be a major attraction as people marvel at the splendid iridescent wings of these magnificent butterflies. The “Belizean Blue” can be observed during every stage of their life cycle.

It begins its cycle as a pale green egg, which looks like a dewdrop, soon after it changes into a voraciously hungry caterpillar, then into the bizarre form of a dormant pupa, and finally into a dazzling beauty that delights the public in butterfly houses throughout the world.

Woodworking Shop at Belize

The Shop is tucked away along the edge of a copse which gives shade to an old Mayan dwelling area where ancient terraced food gardens can still be seen. Guests are always welcome to drop by and talk with the carpenters and craftsman who are happy to discuss the particular project they happen to be working on.

There are always pieces of exotic wood scraps available for the avid whittler to put in the bottom of their bag to take home for future enjoyment. The wood shop is committed to producing high quality furniture by local craftsmen with an attention to finish and detail for all our guests to enjoy.

Belize Cave Tours
Belize offers a magnificent opportunity to explore “Xibalba”, the Mayan underworld. With a series of ancient ceremonial caves, some featuring human remains, pottery and crystal skulls, Belize has increasingly become the go-to destination for cave tours and cave tubing adventures.

Our Belize Cave Tours include the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave (popularly known as the ATM) and regarded as the #1 “Top 10 Sacred Caves in the World” by National Geographic, Barton Creek cave, and Caves Branch. Some cave tours involve hiking, swimming, wading and crawling, proving to be one of the most adventerous things to do while in Belize.

Actun Tunichil Muknal
Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave, also known as the ATM, is an ancient Maya ceremonial Belize cave rich in both history and artefacts. One of Belize’s most impressive attractions, it is also one of the newest, having only been open to the public since the late 1990s.

Although featured in National Geographic, History Channel, Lonely Planet and other documentaries, magazines and guidebooks, a visit to this spectacular Belize cave is still an off-the-beaten track adventure that even Indiana Jones would appreciate.

After an hour and half drive from Chaa Creek and a 45-minute walk along a jungle trail fording three river crossings, guests arrive at the ATM camp to rest and enjoy lunch. The real adventure begins with a swim into the cave’s mouth, still partially concealed by the overhanging jungle plants that kept it hidden for so many years.

Actun Tunichil Muknal was perhaps the most important of sacred Belize caves, one in which the ancient Maya conducted elaborate ceremonies to appease their gods, and once inside, visitors wade along a shallow underground river before scaling ladders that lead to sacrificial altars still surrounded by jade axe heads, pottery, blood letting implements and other artefacts.

As you venture deeper, the skulls and skeletons of sacrificial victims compete for space with more artefacts and stalagmites while beautiful, multi hued stalactites adorn cathedral like ceilings.

The highlight of the tour is the famous Crystal Maiden, from which this Belize cave gets one of its nicknames. The intact skeleton of a young sacrificial victim has over the years been coated with a sparkling crystal carbonate, giving her an eerie sparkle that shimmers in the torchlight.

With its combination of natural beauty and the wealth of relics left behind from mysterious Maya ceremonies, a visit to Actun Tunichil Muknal is an experience guaranteed to leave you with unforgettable memories and a rare, in-depth look into the life of Belize’s ancient Maya.

Pontoon on the Vaca Lake
The Vaca Lake is a man-made reservoir in the upper Macal River Valley a few miles upstream from our Lodge. When the lake swelled into a 6 mile long waterhole, Lazaro Martinez who grew up in the area decided it was time to invite adventurers to his childhood backyard.

Join him on a hilly jungle trek to his pontoon, La Capitana for a tamed loop around the lake. The gentle drift offers a unique opportunity to spot myriad creatures including, Tapirs, Spider Monkeys, Ocelots and a plethora of Birds conveying at this biospheric junction.

Belize Mayan Ruins Tours
The Maya civilization flourished from 2000 B.C. to about 900 A.D. During the classic period from 250 to 900 A.D.
