Ellenborough Park is a magnificent 15th century English country estate with a luxury spa, and beautiful grounds. Perfectly situated on the edge of the Cotswolds and a short drive from Cheltenham town centre.

The spacious bedrooms have luxury bathrooms with heated marble floors, fluffy bathrobes and plush toiletries. All rooms feature 21st century modern conveniences; many have garden views, some with private patios.

A culinary experience at Ellenborough is always a memorable one. An a la Carte menu of classical French dishes and British favourites are served daily between the Horse Box and Restaurant.

The Indian inspired spa offers a chic decor and tranquil ambiance, it features mood showers and a juice bar. Guests can relax and unwind in the sauna, hydro pool and relaxation zone or the more adventurous can enjoy the all-weather outdoor heated swimming pool and fitness suite.

Steeped in history and boasting 5 stars, Ellenborough Park is nestled between the Cotswolds’ highest point and the gallops of Cheltenham’s world-famous racecourse. But don’t take our word for it, borrow a pair of Dubarry’s from the Boot Room and explore the rolling 90 acre estate for yourself.

The History of Ellenborough Park
When it comes to luxury hotels, Cheltenham has a rich provenance. From humble beginnings a tenant farmer called Thomas Goodman discovered a slightly elevated spot and decided to build his house here.Block by block, transported by horse and cart, the building began in 1485 with the Great Hall.

Described as a ‘pretty manor place’ in 1533 by the King’s Antiquary and ‘one of the greatest curiosities in the country’ in 1796 by Samuel Rudder, Ellenborough Park has held a revered position in the county’s archives for more than 500 years.

The many layers of history at Ellenborough Park are personified by the overlying centuries of oak beams, stone fireplaces and intricate stained glass that adorn the hotel.

If we look at the Ellenborough era, when in 1833 the 1st Earl of Ellenborough and former Governor General of India purchased the estate as his home, you can see how this fine property gained its current name.

History recalls Earl Ellenborough for his wedding to Jane Digby, a ‘scandalous society beauty’ who was seventeen years his junior when they wed in 1824. Lady Ellenborough’s carefree joie de vivre sealed her place in history alongside her former home.

From home, to school, to hotels, Cheltenham‘s modern day Ellenborough lives on

From 1906, the house was lived in by Mrs C M Ratcliff and her daughter, until the estate was broken up in 1927. In 1947, a Miss Bellamy opened the Oriel Private School for Girls on the site. This ran for 25 years until the school and property were sold again to become the Hotel De La Bere, which closed in 2008.

The restoration of Ellenborough Park commenced early the same year and took three years to complete. The vision was to transform a dated hotel by breathing new life into its historical elements and intersperse within it the modern luxuries of the world’s finest hotels.

Having revitalised Ellenborough Park for the next chapter of its history, it would be 6 further years before Ellenborough would be altered again.

The 2017 refurbishment

In our seventh year of being Ellenborough Park, we started an extensive refurbishment. The aim of which was to not only rejuvenate the property, but to offer an experience that would delight all guests who visit the hotel.

Cheltenham welcomes visitors from all over the world, and to keep our hotel at the exquisite standard that our guests expect, we made the decision to modernise and restore our public areas.

As one of the most decadent hotels in Cheltenham we understand that such restoration may strike many as juxtaposing, but here at Ellenborough Park we wanted to keep all modernisation in keeping with our history and heritage.

The refurbishment saw the hotel gain a new front entrance in the form of the original door from 1485. The brasserie transformed into our 5-star country pub, The Horse Box, and The Beaufort received a complete makeover becoming The Restaurant at Ellenborough Park.

A new reception area was also created alongside our cocktail bar and lounge; The Atrium. We are very excited about the new lease of life this refurbishment has brought – the work completed has truly complemented this beautiful and historic house.

Snowshill Manor and Cotswold Lavender

A visit to the extraordinary Snowshill Manor is highly recommended but like a good discovery on Netflix it is best to avoid reading or hearing anything about before you see it. So, no spoilers here but websites on the subject give it away (Spoiler Alert!).

However, the gardens are beautiful and so is the village, including a particularly lovely row of Cotswolds homes and look out for the Victorian Church, from ancient roots, with a missing steeple!

Nearby is Hill Barn Farm and its stunning Lavender Fields, which is open from 16th June (best time to see lavender at its fullest usually mid-July) until 5th August.

Hidcote Gardens & Dovers Hill
The gardens at Hidcote are designed as outdoor rooms. There are beautiful trees, flowers, shrubs, and water features included in the designs. Whatever of time year you make your visit, there is always something special to see.

You can see The Pillar Garden, The Bathing Pool Garden, The Red Borders and Gazebo. Sounds intriguing? It is. You can see parts of the Manor and learn about its history including the life of Major Lawrence Johnstone, who created the garden and about The Arts and Crafts Movement (which is very much part of The Cotswolds History).

Only assistance dogs are allowed in the premises, although after your visit, you can give your dog a good run round in the fields adjacent to the gardens. Or go up to Dovers Hill, which offer stunning panoramic views over the Vale of Evesham. Dover’s Hill is free to visit.

Stanway House, Fountain, Gardens, & Watermill
A lovely afternoon. Head to Stanton Village beautiful Cotswold Village about 11am have some lunch at The Mount try and book and ask for a view of the gardens looking over the village. After a delicious lunch, head to the fascinating Stanway House (Open June, July and August from 2pm to 5pm).

Inside you will find a scrap book which tells of all the Films and TV programs it has been used for. The House is still in use by Lord Wemyss and family and has been in the family since the 16th Century.

The previous 800 years by Tewkesbury Abbey. It has amazing gravity fountain which plays twice each afternoon. Then you go to the Stanway Watermill. Fully restored 13th Century Watermill. Very popular in first lockdown!

Sezincote House & Batsford Arboretum
Sezincote is amazing! You could easily ask yourself: am in India or Brighton? In fact, both are part of Sezincote’s story. It was built in 1805 and the house and gardens are unusual and breath-taking.

There is nowhere else like it and nothing can prepare you for your visit. It is about 40 minutes from Ellenborough Park near the town of Moreton-in-Marsh, which is also worth a visit while you are in Sezincote. Moreton has connections to JRR Tolkien.

At present there is no visitor information for Sezincote House but hopefully it will become available. One thing to note there are no dogs allowed at Sezincote House. Batsford Arboretum is also nearby, the home of the Mitford Sisters. Keen gardeners will enjoy the fantastic garden centre on site.
