At home in Hockney’s Yorkshire somewhere amidst the rolling Wolds and rugged coastline, stands our handsome Georgian hideaway.

A family affair, brushed with Palladian hues and kissed with all things boutique; stroll amongst English gardens, sink into sumptuous interiors, share our table laden with consummate delights; before bed, cloaked in the softest of Yorkshire yarns.

Our Family

Our parents first brought us to Tickton Grange nearly 40 years ago. Wet rot, dry rot, dilapidated and neglected we fell in love. It was home. Brought up to give rather than to take, how amazing it has been to share this old house with those who work with us and with you, our guests.

Now, with the sound of our own grandchildren running around (particularly Daisy whose legs never stop) we are excited about what lies ahead, but ever mindful of, and grateful to, those who have carried us to this point. Moored in the past yet committed to the future.

Our Friends

Collaboration, ingenuity, integrity and quality, are instincts that guide our family. Every partnership made and friendship forged, adds to the spirit of our home.

Indeed, from the moment we first creaked open the doors, we have sought out those who are in love with their crafts just as much as we are. Inviting each to pitch in their own creativity, breath life into our style and help Tickton to bloom by our sides.

Maham Anjum

Designer, potter and wonderful collaborator, Maham has worked closely with our chefs to design and then hand throw beautiful plates, jugs and bowls for us which we use in our Library and in our restaurant.

The glazes are stunning. She also designed our own range of bone china which is not only made by hand for us but also hand painted and gilded by the craftsmen and women at Royal Crown Derby

Adam Prest

We have never (ever!) met such a talented floral artist as Adam. It has been our enormous pleasure to work with him; hosting workshops large and small, running ‘shoots’ for us and helping us bring out the best in this lovely Georgian house. His work is simply spectacular.

Compleat Interiors

Brothers Andrew and Mike have been on a journey with us, designing every room we have refurbished over the past few years.

From the drawing board to making the furniture, curtains, pelmets, cushions to framing pictures and hanging mirrors… Everything detail is considered and every item is handmade specifically for us in their workshop in Hexham

Our Rooms

Brushed with colours borrowed from gone by Georgian days. Bathed in the light of delicate sash windows. Warmed by sumptuous fabrics, textures and tones. Our bedrooms are much more than a break away from the hubbub.

Cosy robes, bedside lights, piled up books, quiet corners, chairs to draw up, the softest of yarns to slink under. It doesn’t get better than this… Dotted between the house, the farmhouse wing and The Granary; our Cottage in the grounds, from ‘Intimate’ to ‘Suites’, discover our categories below.

Royal Crown Derby

Brought up with beautiful baking, fine bone china and the inclination to chat, Afternoon Tea is an art that’s dear to our hearts. A firmly rooted tradition that has thrived with time, as a family, for us, it embodies the dream we have never quite been able to shake off.

And so, feeling that ours deserved something more than the every day, we decided to tell our story through our china. Cue a collaboration between the magnificent potter Maham Anjum and the one and only Royal Crown Derby.

Inspired by our own mothers set, brushed with a blue stroke resonant of our future, and with each piece individually crafted to be our own. You won’t ever find anything else like it. And isn’t it divine.

The Yorkshire Wolds – Hockney’s Inspiration
In celebration of Hockney we have a collection of some rare catalogues and articles in the Library Bar which give a unique insight into his lifelong connection with the region and it’s landscapes. Discover the rolling chalk hills, dry valleys and red-brick villages of the Wolds.

Take our ‘Secret’s Out’ booklet and journey through landscapes so familiar to us and an inspiration to David Hockney. Perhaps start from Warter (Hockney’s ‘Bigger Trees’) through Thixendale (‘Three Trees near Thixendale’) to Millington (‘A Larger Valley’).

Millington was one of Hockney’s favourites and, as a family, we spent many happy hours in Millington Woods so we endorse David Hockney’s view wholeheartedly!

Onwards up to Huggate, the highest village on the Wolds (“Huggate’s St Mary’s Church Spire’), down through ‘Garrowby Hill’, ‘Bugthorpe Valley’ and see if you can discover ‘Wheat Field near Fridaythorpe’ before heading to ‘The Road to York through Thixendale’.

According to Art Historian Nikolaus Pevsner ” a perfect example of an estate village”. On to discover ‘Tracks Into Wheat Field Near Langtoft’, ‘Puddle Near Kilham’ and revel in the now famous ‘Woldgate Woods’ before ending with a coffee in Bridlington Old Town.

Walks
Follow in the footsteps of rebels on the Pilgrimage of Grace heritage trail, cross the magnificent Humber Bridge, discover the landscape around Huggate before relaxing on its poetry bench, explore the hidden dry valleys around Fridaythorpe, find the lost village of Wharram Percy or head out to search the rock pools of Filey Brigg before enjoying fish and chips (of course!)

Wildlife
Bempton Cliffs boasts the largest colony of gannets, adorable puffins, razorbills, guillemots, fulmars and kittiwakes. Visit the Living Seas Centre and search for whales and dolphins. Inland the Wolds attract curlews, barn owls, red kites and hares, whilst the chalk streams are home to otters, water voles and kingfishers.
