LEGENDS AND MYSTERIES IN CAMPO DEI MORI
Various alluring interpretations, as is the rule for Venetian circumstances, lurk around the identity of the characters sculpted on the palazzos in Campo dei Mori.
A camel adorns the Palazzo Mastelli or “del cammello”, probably built by the three trade brothers Afani, Rioba and Sand. Their Mastelli nickname probably originates from the fact that these items were their trade tools.
On the Fondamenta dei Mori, near the Sotoportego del Porton dei Mori near Tintoretto’s birthplace, another merchant in Oriental garb observes us behind impenetrable eyes. It’s said that he was a camel driver who settled in Venice after suffering from a broken heart.
With his unmistakable iron nose, Venetian icon, “Sior Antonio Rioba” stands at the corner of Campo dei Mori. Probably a descendant of the three Rioba brothers, he represented the popular discontent, tormenting the Venetian Republic authorities with his satire. His head, recently damaged by vandals, was found and restored.
THE VENICE JEWISH GHETTO
Captivating treasures concealed behind the austere facade of the tall buildings in Campo del Ghetto Novo, the ancient Jewish quarter: a must see, the synagogues and Jewish museum, if you want to retrace the venerable Jewish art, culture, tradition and spirituality through an exhibit of priceless documents and artifacts.
A FAIRY-TALE VENICE
Hotel Ai Mori d’Oriente guests are served tantalizing cocktails in the same spot as the former Locanda La Pergola, the preferred stomping grounds for writer and illustrator Hugo Pratt, author of the Venetian adventures of Corto Maltese.
The view of the canale della Sensa from this enchanting American bar, called the Oasi d’Oriente, is the perfect aperitif to a pleasant stroll around the hotel surroundings: a scattering of typical Venetian inns, captivating architecture and hidden courtyards add to the enchanting and magical atmosphere. Campo Sant’Alvise, where the Gothic church houses precious paintings by Tiepolo could be a romantic place to stop.
