HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE FAMILY-RUN HOTEL IN VAL GARDENA
We place great importance on a friendly but unobtrusive atmosphere. This has been our way for a long time. What began in 1982 as a small, comfortable guest-house on the sunny side of Ortisei/St.Ulrich, has over the years developed to a charming hotel in Val Garden/Gröden.

A successful combination of romantic flair, architectural playfulness and alpine style, a house with a sporting and friendly atmosphere as well as high comfort. Hotel owner Georg Vinatzer took over the hotel from his parents Alexander and Jona.

It was extended and changed in 1976, 1989, 2002 and has been constantly renewed since. There has been no time for idleness. At present the four-star-hotel in Ortisei/St.Ulrich is a first class holiday address in Val Gardena/Gröden with all conveniences.

HOTEL WITH RESTAURANT IN ORTISEI – GOURMET HOLIDAYS IN SOUTH TYROL
South Tyrol is a small country. But South Tyrol is a country of real pleasures. In the course of many years strange things have happened to the cuisine of this northern area right behind the Brennero/Brenner, where Italy begins but Tyrol is nevertheless not finished yet.

Two completely different attitudes towards cooking have met. On the one hand the light tradition of Italy with pasta, fish, polenta and gnocchi, on the other the more substantial Tyrolean style with “Knödel” (some sort of dumplings), “Krapfen” (sweat pastry filled with various types of jam), soups and “Speck” (smoked ham).

Obviously, “Knödel” and spaghetti are not served together, but the two have managed to enter an impressive co-existence. Whatever braises, fries, cooks and simmers in today’s South Tyrolean pots and pans spoils the palate.

Because the South Tyrolean cuisine is honest, it is still traditional and has just improved through the influence of the Southern, more playful style. In this way the former food of the poor people has been raised to noble pleasures. We are proud of that and love serving it.

ENJOY THE COMBINATION OF ITALIAN AND TRADITIONAL SOUTH TYROLEAN CUISINE
There is hardly any other cuisine in Europe that is as varied as the South Tyrolean one. We have made this variety to our main concept in the Hotel Alpenheim – Charming Hotel & SPA.

Our guests should be able to enjoy this variety, the combination of light, Mediterranean cuisine and the more substantial Tyrolean tradition.

Every day we serve a new surprise. Noodles, fish, sour puddings, risotto, “Knödel” and “Krapfen”, spaghetti and lasagne, “Selchkarree” (smoked pork loin) with “Sauerkraut” (pickled cabbage).

Obviously not all in one go! But still, no contradiction on the menu card. Our evening menus are arranged with love and passion so that once back home again you will be able to say: South Tyrol is a country of pleasures and the cuisine of the Hotel Alpenheim is following this trend of good taste.

WELL-STOCKED WINE CELLAR
Wine is a part of South Tyrolean culture. Some vineyards of our small country lying on the Adige/Etsch and Isarco/Eisack have acquired world-wide fame. Wine is only grown on 5100 hectare in South Tyrol. This does not even correspond to one percent of the area planted with vine in Italy.

But still, the heavy Lagrein, the light and pleasant Kalterer See, the Vernatsch, the Gewürztraminer, the Blauburgunder, the Merlot, the Weißburgunder, the South Tyrolean Chardonnay or the Sauvignon are word- famous – both red and white wine.

That’s true. In the last years South Tyrol has also developed a culture of white wine. Some courageous wine farmers who have decided to invest in the cultivation of white wine need to be thanked for that. And well done! The result of their work are some good wines that do not need to hide themselves in Europe.

Many of these selected wines are stored in the wine cellar of the Hotel Alpenheim – Charming Hotel & SPA. One glance at the wine card is enough to realise what excellent wines can be enjoyed.

SOUTH TYROLEAN CUISINE
This is how South Tyrol cooks – keeping the best The South Tyrolean cuisine is of interest to experts, restaurant-critics, gourmets and the local people. But it is mainly the South Tyrolean chefs that study the South Tyrolean cuisine.

Much of what was discarded as food for poor people or what once ended up on the table to provide the strength and energy needed for the hard work in the steep meadows and fields was rescued from oblivion and brought to life again in the kitchens.

One thing is for sure: the South Tyrolean cuisine is honest, traditional and authentic. The old farmers’ wives are in great demand right now as it is them who can help keep and pass on the tradition of what was once cooked without too much a fuss.

No wonder that a cookery book about the South Tyrolean cuisine has become a bestseller in South Tyrol and by now even far beyond the borders. “So kocht Südtirol” (This is how South Tyrol cooks) has now appeared in its 13th edition and has been sold 150,000 times.

The 528 pages are more than just a very concrete and “hands-on” cook book. It is also the attempt to keep alive the cuisine of a country with all its influences, with its refined but still simple character. The subtitle “A culinary journey from the Alps to the South” is a very good summary of its content.

WELLNESS AREA
Pull yourself together and simply relax just for once! Enjoy to the full the special wellness programme in the Hotel Alpenheim – Charming Hotel & SPA in Ortisei/St.Ulrich, in the beautiful Val Gardena/Grödner Tal.

Allow yourself to be caressed by the pleasant feel-good-aroma which spreads a calming atmosphere in our wellness oasis Soreghina. The ladies at our wellness reception try hard to fulfil any of your wishes in their considerate way so that you can simply concentrate on enjoying your stay.

Soreghina
Soreghina is a wonderful figure from the world famous legends of the Dolomites. There she embodies the light, the brightness, the day, the glow of life.

We have decided to name the Alpenheim Wellness oasis after this figure because she exudes and personifies very well the atmosphere we wanted to create by building our wellness oasis – and that is light, brightness and happiness: elixir of life for our souls as well.

Sauna
Can you think of anything more pleasant than a sauna visit after a day spent walking or skiing? Relax and chill out in our generously devised sauna area. Finnish sauna, steam baths in the Turkish bath, a Vitarium biological sauna, aroma showers, whirlpools and sun beds are waiting for you.

This is sparkling and refreshing life. After the sauna enjoy some strokes in the swimming pool. A gate leads you to our outdoor pool, so you can literally swim directly towards the South Tyrolean world of mountains.

Pleasant relaxation areas with extravagant possibilities to lie down encourage you to take a break. This is where holiday becomes pleasure because in our wellness oasis “Soreghina” routine and stress stand no chance.

Swimming pool
Since 2008 the Hotel Alpenheim – Charming Hotel & SPA in Val Gardena/Gröden also owns a swimming pool. It is part of the newly devised wellness area “Soreghina”. By the way, this name is taken from the world famous legends of the Dolomites.

With a water area of about 600 square metres, an indoor and outdoor pool and a breathtaking panoramic view, the swimming pool area has become a real attraction of our house. Through a gate you can directly swim towards the mountain world of the Dolomites.

Our guests can choose between relaxing outdoors or indoors. The water comes from our excellent mountain sources in Val Gardena/Gröden and is heated to a pleasant temperature.

Beauty
After a prolonged visit to our Alpenheim SPA everybody will notice how good you are feeling. Allow yourself to be spoilt by various beauty treatments.

In our wellness reception you will be introduced to the various offers and you can book the treatment. Lie down and relax, we will do the rest. Efficient and experienced staff will take you to the reign of beauty.

Massages
It does happen that we cannot feel our tenseness anymore because of the great tension in and around us. Very often we need to be lying on the massage bed to realise all the tensions accompanying our daily life and weighing down on us.

Allow yourself to be spoilt by the arts of the massage. Enjoy expert massage hands and experience the beneficial and healing effect of techniques that are thousands of years old. This is genuine and complete relaxation.

Choose from our extensive offers. No matter if you choose aroma or wellness balance, full body or partial body massage, Hot-Stone or – the extravagant version- chocolate therapy, there will surely be an offer for any demand and taste.

Spa tradition in Val Gardena/Grödner Tal
You will literally dive into it! Our baths, especially the baths after Vitalis Dr.Joseph, have had a long tradition in the Hotel Alpenheim – Charming Hotel & SPA and are very popular with our guests.

The reason for their popularity can only partly be described with words, one possibility being “beneficial relaxation”. You definitely need to experience them yourself to understand their real effect! Baths are the origin of all wellness methods.

That is when it all began – more than thousand years ago. And that is what you still do today – you step into the bathtub and just feel good. Essential oils, natural herbs and various basic products guarantee beneficial enjoyment.

Vitalis
We will spoil you in our “Vitalis”-tub. You will dive into the wonderful experience of a bath. Vitalis is an extensive bathing concept with after-effect of high quality experience.

The treatment with its pleasant effect consists of seven elements: relaxation and inner peace, case history, tea, hydro- foot bath, reaction time including compresses and special massages. This is as beautiful as bathing can be.

Be it in field thyme and stone pine, arnica and St.John’s wort, marigold and camomile, hay flower and juniper, or many other amazing combinations – we will make your bath to a unique experience.

Beauty packs
Have you ever experienced what it feels like when tiredness suddenly disappears as if blown away? What it is like to feel fresh and full of energy again? A hay flower bath brings about this change.

For centuries hay baths have been a method tried and tested by South Tyrolean mountain farmers to alleviate their rheumatic pains and back aches. Most probably they did not realise the beneficial effect these baths also had on their skin and spirit.

For them getting rid of the pain was the sole purpose. Our bath offers also include an algae bath or a romantic evening primrose oil bath. Our staff at the wellness reception will gladly inform and help you choose.

Day offers and multiple day offers
In your Hotel Alpenheim – Charming Hotel & SPA you will be spoilt all over and over more days with all the comfort and without covering long distances.

Enjoy our extensive beauty offer today, and tomorrow our Spa-area with various saunas, special showers and swimming pool with outdoor pool in the midst of the South Tyrolean mountain world.

The day after tomorrow it is time for one of our many baths and a wonderful massage. We will arrange an unforgettable package for you based on a varied and relaxing wellness and beauty programme.

World Heritage of the UNESCO
On 26th June 2009 nine parts of the Dolomites were declared World Heritage- Natural Site of the UNESCO. The explanation of the World Heritage committee states as follows: “The nine components of The Dolomites World Heritage property protect a series of highly distinctive mountain landscapes that are of exceptional natural beauty.

The sublime, monumental and colourful landscapes of the Dolomites have also long attracted hosts of travellers and a history of scientific and artistic interpretations of its values.” The Dolomites came into being about 250 million years ago due to former corral reefs rising from the sea.

The characteristic attraction of the Dolomites is based on the often abrupt succession of alpine pastures and the higher riffs of limestone and dolomite. The peaks reach heights of more than 3,300 metres.

The highest peak is the Marmolada (3,342m). One of the most beautiful massifs is the Sassolungo/Langkofel, which rises above the Val Gardena/Gröden with its 3,181 metres.

Summer active
In summer there are plenty of possibilities to spend one’s holidays. No matter if you travel on your own, in twos or with the family, you won’t have any problem finding the right thing for you.

It goes without saying that Val Gardena/Gröden is more than anything a hiking paradise for connoisseurs, for the young and the old (but young in spirit), for the small and the big ones.

But the summer in Val Gardena/Gröden, in Ortisei/St. Ulrich and in the Hotel Alpenheim – Charming Hotel & SPA has definitely much more to offer than that.

The question to be asked here is: What can’t be offered? Our landscape, the unique nature underneath the proud massif of the Sassolungo/Langkofel, the alpine pastures and meadows, the valleys and lakes, the lively brooklets and the wonderfully situated huts in Val Gardena/Gröden make the valley of woodcarvers to the amazing area it is.

We would have to describe and enthuse about it for days to give you a complete picture. The better alternative is for you to come and see for yourself!

Hiking
A wide-spread net of hiking paths, walks and alpine tracks covers the whole area of Val Gardena/Gröden like a tight net. Clear signs help you find your way and make hiking to a wonderful experience. Where to go first? Where are the most beautiful spots in the World Heritage of the Dolomites?

Follow our hiking guide on the very best tours to the very best viewpoints, to wonderfully situated huts and to marvellous alpine pastures. This is hiking at its best, without worrying about anything and just enjoying every minute of it.

Climbing
Val Gardena/Gröden is a paradise for climbing. Easy climbing tours in the Dolomites, difficult tracks up to the highest peaks, climbing for connoisseurs in the Dolomites, climbing parks on Passo Sella/Sellajoch – all this and more does Val Gardena/Gröden offer.

The masters of the vertical line have definitely found the ideal place. The climbing guide by the mountaineer Mauro Bernardi from Val Gardena/Gröden alone contains 120 delightful tours in the nearer surroundings – and they are just a pick.

Some of the best climbers and mountaineers in the world come from the Val Gardena/Grödnertal. Never to be forgotten: Battista Vinatzer, one of the best of his time; Luis Trenker, the big son of Val Gardena/Gröden and Karl Unterkircher, who climbed both the Mount Everest and the K2 in one season before tragically dying on Nanga Parbat.

You can also go climbing with the famous mountain guides from the group of the “Catores”. Be it for beginners or experts, a tour with a mountain guide from Val Gardena/Gröden guarantees great adventures and experiences.

Golf
Golf in the Dolomites is something really special. In the midst of a marvellous and magic landscape, combined with wellness and relaxation, a golf holiday in Val Gardena/Gröden is going to be a real experience. The golf courses in South Tyrol are very different one from the other.

But there is one thing they all have in common: it is definitely worth playing on them. Playing golf in the pleasant country of South Tyrol – the Hotel Alpenheim – Charming Hotel & SPA in Ortisei/St.Ulrich is the perfect address for it.

High rope course
Since late summer 2009 Val Gardena/Gröden and Ortisei/St.Ulrich have had a new attraction. Gabriel Kostner, one of the best helicopter rescue pilots in the Alpine region realised his childhood dream and built a playground above the roofs of Ortisei/St.Ulrich.

With the help of more than 3000 metres of steel rope, more than 700 steel rope clamps and numerous screws and nuts a wonderful high rope course emerged in a pleasantly shady piece of wood. Between three and fifty metres of height you dance in airy spaces.

Always well-secured, never really dangerous, but adventurous and exciting – that’s how the climbing park professionally run by the famous mountain guides of the “Catores” presents itself. Almost sixty platforms, stairs, ladders, spiral staircases and bridges guarantee entertaining hours.

Climbing harness, helmet, carainer and rope provide full protection. This is ultimate fun for the whole family.

WINTER VACATION IN VAL GARDENA, IN THE HEART OF THE DOLOMITES
We are the winter! Val Gardena/Gröden, Ortisei/St.Ulrich with its Sassolungo/Langkofel and the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm present themselves as a real winter paradise.

Between relaxing in the snow and highly active days spent skiing and snowboarding on unique slopes, there is still lots of room for the magic variety of the winter. The season already begins at the beginning of December and snow is guaranteed till Easter.

The Hotel Alpenheim – Charming Hotel & SPA is one of the most popular houses when it comes to spending a relaxing and unforgettable winter holiday in South Tyrol. In the last years Val Gardena/Gröden has been frequently declared to be one of the most beautiful ski areas worldwide.

Val Gardena/Gröden is the venue of alpine ski races in the FIS World Cup and our guests are in the midst of it all and not just part of it.

Skiing in the World Heritage -Natural Site of the UNESCO
The fun of skiing in South Tyrol has no limits. In Val Gardena/Gröden alone there are 175 kilometres of slopes and 83 lifts which comfortably and safely take you to great heights and from one slope to the other.

Furthermore, more than 500 km of connected slopes around the mountain range of the Sella open up numerous additional possibilities. But still not enough! Val Gardena/Gröden is part of the world-famous Dolomiti Superski, the biggest ski circus in the world.

More than 450 lifts and more than 1200 slopes are offered. This is unique in the Alps. Val Gardena/Gröden attracts with its steep and flat slopes, family and world cup slopes, very easy and extreme slopes.

The area between Seceda on the one side and Alpe die Siusi/Seiser Alm on the other offers lots of space for both skiers and carvers. Overnight ultramodern snow groomers make sure that every day of your holidays offers perfect conditions and slopes as smooth as a carpet.

Snowboarding
In Val Gardena/Gröden snowboarders can truly enjoy themselves looping in the snow; the slopes are very long; about 500 km of slopes in an incomparable unit of lifts offer unexpected possibilities. This is fun as it is meant to be – either alone or in a group of peers.

Every year new attractions are built for snowboarders in Val Gardena/Gröden. Fun parks and Boarder Cross Slopes, Half Pipes and crazy jumps for adventurous turns – Val Gardena/Gröden has by now also become a paradise for snowboarders.

Tobogganing
Six kilometres on two runners till the foot of the valley. In Ortisei/St.Ulrich this is no problem at all. Because if we say “good for skiing and tobogganing”, that is what we mean. From the station at the top end of the brand-new Raschötz funicular railway there is a 6000 –metre- run down to Ortisei/St.Ulrich.

Tobogganing becomes immense fun for the whole family. The Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm and some other areas of Val Gardena/Gröden also offer various possibilities for great tobogganing runs. It goes without saying that tobogganing on ski slopes is forbidden for security reasons.

Another possibility to enjoy the snow is to do a romantic trip on a horse-drawn sleigh. Pulled by steaming horses you are taken to places of incredible beauty.

Snow shoeing
Who would like to experience the winter’s peaceful and lonely character should take a pair of snow-shoes and walking sticks, prepare a small rucksack with some hot tea, put on warm clothes and start on one of our marvellous snow-shoe tours.

These are unforgettable hours far from all hassle and alone in our magic winter landscape. You do not need any special prerequisites for a snow-shoe tour, just the wish to experience something different and moderate fitness (the fitness you need for a normal hiking tour).

You will learn the technique in some minutes. The rest is a combination of fun, lasting impressions and unforgettable moments in the snow. There are plenty of possibilities for snow-shoe-tours in Val Gardena/Gröden.

Snow-shoe tours in Val Gardena/Gröden
In Val Gardena/Gröden there are many possibilities to undertake a snow-shoe tour. The Hotel Alpenheim – Charming Hotel & SPA offers guided snow-shoe tours to the most beautiful spots. The hiking guide of our hotel knows the Dolomites and the mountain world around Val Gardena/Gröden inside out.

He is able to interpret the tracks of the animals and shows our guests the most beautiful tours. From Raschötz or the top station of Col Raiser there are, for example, wonderful possibilities to do an excursion into the reign of Mother Hulda and King Winter.

Ice climbing
They are masters of the vertical line. Ice climbing on deeply frozen waterfalls is the youngest and perhaps also the most spectacular Alpine sport. With climbing irons and ice tools that have no longer anything in common with the former ice axes, you start into the vertical ice.

Ice screws, rope, climbing harness and helmet provide a high degree of safety. Accidentally walking by such a scene, some might, however, find their blood freeze in their veins just by looking at it. But there is also the easier, playful version for beginners.

As unbelievable as it may sound, the technique is easy to learn. Following the expert explanations of a “Catores” mountain guide from Val Gardena/Gröden, the ice-cold dance on the top of the climbing irons soon leads to passion and obsession.

There are special test days where you can try climbing some metres up the ice and find out what it is like when the deep frozen beauty underneath you crunches and crackles.

Ice climbing in South Tyrol and Val Gardena/Gröden
Would you like to try the exciting alpine sport of ice climbing for once? No problem! We’ll organise a qualified mountain guide from Val Gardena/Gröden for you and off you go! The initial feeling of fear and uncertainty is soon overcome.

Then this ice-cold sport on the iced waterfalls quickly develops to fun including varied activities. The experience showed: hours spent ice climbing pass in a flash. Under competent instruction ice climbing is rather safe and in the evening your rucksack will definitely be full of great experiences.

Skitouren
Doing ski tours is considered the royal discipline of the Alpine sports. Ski tours in the Dolomites are among the most amazing mountain experiences in the Alps. In Val Gardena/Gröden deep snow lovers will simply love the wide slopes covered in deep snow offering untouched powder snow throughout the winter.

To feel as safe as possible, our guests like putting themselves into the expert hands of the mountain guides of the “Catores”, who know best where and when to find the best conditions.

After applying the skins on your skis and checking the equipment, off you go towards pure nature to experience unforgettable und incomparable hours during a ski tour in Val Gardena/Gröden with the majestic Dolomites as a background.

Climbing
What does the mountaineer do in winter? He climbs mountains, what else! To do so, he uses special aids like snow-shoes or skis with skins and he equips himself with ice axes and climbing irons. Mountain climbing in winter is a completely different story.

But incredibly exciting. As the mountain faces of the Dolomites are very steep and vertical, snow does not last long on them and that’s why it is even possible to sometimes climb some face of the Dolomites in the middle of winter.

This can become a unique experience if you put yourself into the expert hands of the mountain guides of the “Catores” from Val Gardena/Gröden. You use the skis to get to the assault. If the mountain face is already warm (like under the spring sun) you climb up some pitches.

Then it is time to rope up and afterwards to ski down the steep slope to the next hut. And that’s where the après-ski starts, which is a must after such an adventure!

Dolomiti Superski
The following numbers speak for themselves: more than 1200 kilometres of slopes, about 450 lifts, 12 ski areas, 1 single ski pass for it all and lots of fun on the many huts. That is Dolomiti Superski – the biggest ski circuit in the world, the biggest ski circuit in the Alps.

You can’t but come to your money’s worth and have a good time! No offer could be more varied! Ski runs of all levels of difficulty offer both beginners and experts equally good conditions. The preparation of the slopes over night has been praised very often and even been awarded with prizes.

Val Gardena/Gröden is part of Dolomiti Superski. And this is one of the reasons why Val Gardena/Gröden has been given awards again and again. The valley belongs to the best ski resorts in the world and offers manifold possibilities for the sporty and demanding guest.

In the Hotel Alpenheim – Charming Hotel & SPA you can purchase your Dolomiti Superski pass at the reception without needing to queue in front of the ski pass cash desk.

Sella Ronda
The world famous Sella Ronda belongs to the most beautiful and varied ski safaris in the Alps. On one single day you experience more than other ski tourists in a week. The Sella Ronda leads through four ski areas and the four valleys of Val Gardena/Gröden, Alta Badia, Arabba and Fassa Carezza.

You can either do this fantastic and very rewarding tour leading through the World Heritage of the UNESCO in clock-wise direction following the orange signposts or anti-clockwise following the green signs.

This unforgettable day in the Dolomites counts 37 kilometres of slopes and lifts and overcomes about 15,000 m of altitude. You should be quite fit for this tour. The slopes are of medium difficulty, some even easy.

And your eyes should never tire in order to take in all the marvellous scenery and to fully enjoy this unique ski excursion.

Ski school
The ski schools in Val Gardena/Gröden can look back to a long tradition. The ski and snowboard school in Ortisei/St. Ulrich, for example, has been around for more than 75 years. The well-trained and qualified ski instructors are highly competent and teach skiing in a way that you will find fun and see quick progress.

The material of the skis and the by now extremely cut carving skis have seen enormous change in the last years. Skiing has become fun if you know how to control the speedy planks.

Even advanced skiers like booking a ski lesson now and then with one of the ski instructors from Val Gardena/Gröden in order to polish up their skills and improve their technique.

A day with a ski instructor is even more of an adventure if you can start on one of the big ski routes in Val Gardena/Gröden straight from your Hotel Alpenheim – Charming Hotel & SPA.
