CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING AT LAKE ACHENSEE
Lake Achensee is one of Tirol’s most renowned Nordic skiing centres. About 200 kilometres of groomed trails take skiers through the stunning landscape surrounding Tirol’s largest lake.

With flat sections alongside the lakeshore and challenging trails in the Karwendel valleys, the region offers excellent cross-country skiing in versatile terrain. In addition, the Sports & Vitality Park is one of Tirol’s quality-approved cross-country skiing regions, a cachet that guarantees high standards.

For the best experience possible, the region provides a superbly waymarked and maintained trail network with separate tracks for classic and skate skiing. Pick up our handy trail map or view our interactive map online for route details. Our website also provides the latest trail condition report and weather forecast.

The Achensee region is the cradle of professional cross-country skiing instruction. At the end of the 1970s, Gustav Leithner, founder of the ski school Pertisau, established the first official education standards for teaching cross-country skiing, which still provide the foundation for qualifying professional ski instructors today.

DIVERSE TRAIL NETWORK
Is it your first time on skinny skis? Pertisau has a designated trail where you can practice your striding technique. To enhance your experience, let the professional instructors of the region’s cross-country ski schools introduce you to the sport.

Several trails in Pertisau, Maurach and Achenkirch are suitable for adaptive skiing. The region also has a dog-friendly trail where you can enjoy a happy romp in the snow with your four-legged friend.

DOWNHILL SKIING AT LAKE ACHENSEE
Lake Achensee is the perfect destination for skiers who want to enjoy winter at a leisurely pace. The region’s ski areas are small-scale and versatile with plenty of wide slopes, making them ideal for families, beginners, and returners. Carving fans and snowboarders will also find varied terrain.

The ski lifts Christlum in Achenkirch, the Rofan cable car in Maurach, the Karwendel cable car and the Planberg and Wiesenlifte in Pertisau, as well as the lifts in Steinberg and Wiesing boast 53 kilometres of slopes accessed by 28 lifts.

How does skiing beneath spectacular snow-capped mountains accompanied by gorgeous views of the lake sound? Put on your skis, pick up your poles, and hit the slopes!

SKI AREA IN ACHENKIRCH
The Christlum lifts in Achenkirch, which access 27 kilometres of slopes, are only an hour’s drive from Innsbruck and Munich, making them a great choice for skiing day trips. At altitudes between 950 and 1,800 metres, the Christlum is one of Austria’s most snowsure ski areas.

Children, families, or advanced skiers: the ski area offers something for every skill level. Wide carving and steep mogul slopes and the “Christl Funpark” make the Christlum a versatile ski area for recreational skiing. Ski ticket and season pass holders can take advantage of free parking.

SKI AREA IN MAURACH
In just five minutes, the Rofan cable car takes you from Maurach to an altitude of 1,840 metres. From the top, you can swoop down eleven kilometres of slopes. The ski area features a children’s area for tiny tots. If you are craving an adrenaline rush, put the AIRROFAN Skyglider on your must-experience list.

Whizzing through the mountain air on a zipline which resembles the wings of an eagle is an amazing experience. If that’s too adventurous for your taste, you can watch the excitement from the surrounding mountain huts.

WINTER MAGIC AT LAKE ACHENSEE
Skiing is not the only thing to do at Lake Achensee in the winter. The region boasts a huge variety of winter activities beyond the ski slopes.

What could be more romantic than a horse sleigh ride? Hop aboard and cuddle up beneath warm blankets while powerful, well-groomed horses pull you through the fairytale winter wonderland. Fancy an exhilarating toboggan ride?

Tobogganing is the quintessential winter experience guaranteed to delight both young and old. The Achensee region has several natural toboggan runs, most of which are floodlit after nightfall, and some even until midnight.

Ice sports are also very popular in the wintertime. How about taking a spin on the ice rink? Gliding leisurely over the smooth surface while soaking in gorgeous views of the snow-capped mountains and the tranquil lake is an amazing experience.

And where there is ice, there are often people playing ice stock sports, a convivial and fun activity to be enjoyed with friends or the family. Or maybe you get the opportunity to compete with other Achensee visitors? Don’t worry, the game is one of the best and easiest ways to break the ice with someone.

HORSE SLEIGH RIDES AT LAKE ACHENSEE
Are you dreaming of travelling through a wonderland of snow on a horse-drawn sleigh, feeling like a character in your very own fairy-tale? Hop aboard, cuddle up with family, friends, or a loved one beneath the warm blankets, and off you go!

The powerful horses maintain a steady rhythm and the sleigh glides on into the valleys and sometimes even a little up the mountain. A horse sleigh ride with the sound of jingling sleigh bells is a fantastic experience, beautiful in brilliant sunshine during the day, and romantic under the twinkling stars at night.

There are several providers of horse sleigh rides in the Achensee region who offer a variety of tours, taking visitors through the wintry landscape like in the good old days.

In Pertisau, sleigh rides lead into the Karwendel valleys, in Maurach through the village, and in Achenkirch into the Oberautal valley or through the village.

Which is no surprise: Enjoying a chat while walking uphill and whizzing down the hillside with the wind on your face is a great shared experience. Family-friendly or fast-paced and challenging? The Achensee region has several natural toboggan runs, ranging from 0.8 to almost 4.8 kilometres long.

How about a night-time toboggan ride under the stars? Almost all toboggan runs are floodlit, some even until midnight. The toboggan run in Steinberg is illuminated by a light bulb chain which gives out a warm, romantic glow.

And of course, no tobogganing adventure is complete without a stopover at a mountain hut where you can warm up and refuel with Tirolean delicacies.

CYCLING & BIKING AT LAKE ACHENSEE
The Achensee holiday region boasts 250 km of cycling routes to suit all experience levels. Road cyclists and ambitious mountain bikers will find versatile terrain and can be sure of fantastic views along the way.

There are plenty of activities that can make you happy, but for many cycling is the best sport ever. It’s a versatile experience enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.

Explore Lake Achensee on two wheels: The stunning mountain and lake scenery of the Achensee region offers something for everyone, whether you are looking for challenging mountain bike tours or leisurely cycle rides.

The perfect way to round off your cycling adventure is taking a dip in Lake Achensee. If a full-body immersion is too cold for you, you can at least cool off your tired legs.

Along the lake, in the valley. The varied topography makes Lake Achensee the perfect destination for recreational cyclists who are looking to connect with nature. Gentle paths travel alongside the lakeshore and in the romantic side valleys, making them ideal family cycle rides.

On the mountains. Whether your destination is the summit or the mountain hut is up to you. Both options offer fascinating views of the mountain world and quite often also of Lake Achensee.

WATER SPORTS AT LAKE ACHENSEE
Crystal-clear water set against a backdrop of majestic mountains: There’s no need to travel to Emerald Lake in Canada or to the Aurlandsfjord in Norway. If you are looking for versatile water activities, Lake Achensee is your dream destination.

There’s always a breeze at Lake Achensee, and occasionally strong winds blow. The lake is 133 metres at its deepest point. In summer, the water reaches a maximum temperature of 22° C.

Perfect wind conditions: Its reliable winds make Lake Achensee one of Austria’s best lakes for water sports. On some days, the wind even reaches force 5. Lake Achensee provides water sports enthusiasts of all abilities with everything they need to get into water sports.

ANGLING AND FLY-FISHING AT LAKE ACHENSEE
Lake Achensee is known for its stunning turquoise colours and excellent water quality. But did you know that the natural glacial lake is already 20,000 years old? Today, the lake known as the “Tirolean Sea” is fed subterraneously by the tributaries Ampelsbach and Dürrach and by the Achenkirch springs.

The lake’s diverse fish population including perch, rainbow trout, brook trout, whitefish, and pike make it an ideal location for recreational angling and fly-fishing. The Steinberger Ache offers 12 kilometres of fishing grounds that let fly-fishing enthusiasts soak in the quiet and solitude.

Nature lovers find their bliss in the gorge which is home to beautifully marked brown trouts. The Rissbach at Ahornboden in Hinteriss offers 35 kilometres of unspoilt stream with an excellent and self-sustaining brown trout population.

One of the last wild rivers in Tirol, the Rissbach enjoys a spectacular setting backdropped by the Nature Park Karwendel and is perfect to connect with nature.

SUP, PEDAL BOATS & MORE
What started as a trend sport has long since established itself as a relaxed summer family activity on the lake: standup paddle boarding (SUP). If you are looking for more “classic” ways to explore the lake, get out on the water in a kayak, canoe or pedal boat.

Standup paddle boarding (SUP) is a fun fitness activity where you stand on a board – similar to a large surfboard. You use a paddle to propel yourself through the water in a standing position, which is an excellent full-body workout.

Even beginners will get the hang of keeping their balance in no time! Kids can let off some steam and compete in races while the adults paddle leisurely across the lake, adoring the stunning panorama and the fish in the lake.

Alternatively, the SUP works like an air mattress: Move out onto the lake and bask in the sun. And if you get too hot on the board, just take the plunge into the cool water.

A popular SUP tour starts in the Buchau and leads counterclockwise along the lakeshore. If you’re lucky, you will have a little tailwind and you can save the more beautiful western bank for the way back.

At Camping Achensee Schwarzenau, you cross the lake and paddle back in a southerly direction. This tour covers about 13 kilometres but there are also shorter tours.

For more information on tours and SUP courses, please ask at the rental stations. Kayaking, canoeing and leisurely pedal boat tours are a highly enjoyable way to experience Lake Achensee and its magnificent surroundings.

DIVING IN LAKE ACHENSEE
Have you ever wondered what’s at the bottom of Tirol’s largest lake? Suit up and dive in! Lake Achensee has drinking water quality and on some days underwater visibility is up to ten metres, making it a popular spot for recreational diving.

The three most popular diving spots are in the eastern part of the lake: Hechenberg (advanced dive site), Schwarzenau (suitable for beginners) and the dive site of the Diving Club Innsbruck north of the tunnel in the direction of Achenkirch.

Divers can go sightseeing close to the lakeshore, where all kinds of curiosities can be spotted under water, such as an old Opel “Blitz”, a statue of the Madonna and a sunken VW Beetle.

The Diving Club Innsbruck has also created a very accessible diver’s paradise. A series of individual attractions are connected underwater with a rope and are located at different depths. In addition to a cable car gondola, a telephone booth and a letterbox, there is even a treasure chest to explore.

HIKING IN THE KARWENDEL & ROFAN MOUNTAINS
Lake Achensee is surrounded by two mountain ranges: The Rofan and the Karwendel mountains are best explored on foot. Those who want to go up the mountains without enduring the climb can enjoy a scenic gondola ride and savour the views all the way up.

The Rofan mountains to the east of Lake Achensee are rugged and gentle at the same time. On the high plateau, gentle paths climb over lush meadows to the peaks whose rock faces fall away precipitously on the other side.

The Karwendel mountains, which lie to the west, are home to the region’s most splendid flora and fauna and boast the highest population of golden eagles in the Alps. Comprising over 727km² the Nature Park Karwendel is the largest nature reserve in Austria.
