QUICK TOUR OF THE GRAND MOSQUE OF PARIS
A few Metro stops from the Hotel Le Six, located opposite the Jardin des Plantes, stands the proud minaret of the Grand Mosque of Paris, where mosaics, lush gardens and honey pastries await you!

It was not long after the First World War, in 1920 to be precise, that a law was passed calling for the construction of a state financed mosque in Paris.

The decision followed on from much earlier discussions (the project was first mooted in the 1840s) but the idea really began to gain impetus in 1915 and even more so in the aftermath of the Battle of Verdun.

This was when it became a matter of recognising the contribution of the Muslim combatants in the trenches and paying homage to their courage and sacrifice by building a beautiful place of worship rather than a memorial.

Several architects submitted plans, drawing inspiration from the most beautiful mosques in the Maghreb, and the finest Moroccan artisans took care of the interior decoration. In 1926, the Grand Mosque was inaugurated!

Beyond the skilfully carved porch, the enchantment begins with the main courtyard (rhiad) and its Andalusian garden. Sculpted arcades, fountains sparkling amidst flowerbeds, eucalyptus, palm trees and pomegranate shrubs with bright orange flowers take you into another world, right in the heart of Paris.

You will discover with delight the door of cedar wood where verses from the Koran are inscribed, the large patio where the faithful perform their ablutions, the rich decorations of coloured ceramics, the ornate wooden ceilings of the library, the impressive rosettes of mosaic.

Green, ochre, blue and white are prominent in a decor that is at once splendid and sober. A setting as beautiful as it is soothing. Here in the largest mosque in France, you’ll delight in sitting and sipping a mint tea served in the garden.

DISCOVER THE PARIS MINT
As well as the essential Parisian attractions like the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Elysées and the Louvre, your Hotel Le Six Paris likes to help you discover less busy but equally fascinating places. Today, we invite you to meet one of our prestigious neighbours; the Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint).

THE PARIS MINT; OVER A THOUSAND YEARS OF HISTORY
The oldest French institution and the oldest continuously operating national mint in the world, the Monnaie de Paris has been manufacturing coins, medals and other items since 864!

It has survived regime changes, wars, financial crises and revolutions to become what it is today; a state-of-the-art institution that many countries rely on to produce their national currency.

On the famous Quai de Conti you can visit the superb Neoclassical-style premises commissioned by Louis XV and completed in 1775. The Monnaie de Paris invites you on a journey through history and time within the walls of a building noted for its architectural splendour.

PERMANENT AND TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS AT THE PARIS MINT
The Monnaie de Paris has various areas accessible to the public. The Musée du 11 Conti traces the history of the institution and displays its heritage collections, workshops and secrets. This immersive permanent exhibition offers a remarkable insight into a world that is fascinating yet little-known.

The superb Quai de Conti premises also play host to many temporary exhibitions including, among other things, displays of contemporary art. Until February 9th, you will be able to admire the works of the German/American artist Kiki Smith, in her first large-scale monographic exhibition in France.

The Paris Mint offers an intriguing experience for everyone. If you have an interest in history, economics, manufacturing, numismatics and art, don’t miss this exploration of a subject that is simultaneously everyday and esoteric.

THE NUIT BLANCHE IN PARIS
Paris is particularly suited to all-hours entertainment and staying up all night, thanks to its famous nightclubs and cabarets and opportunities for romantic nocturnal walks along the Seine and in the streets of Montmartre. However, there is a Nuit Blanche (White Night) that the Six Hotel particularly recommends…

THE 18TH EDITION OF NUIT BLANCHE
The Nuit Blanche is all about inviting artists to use the capital’s public spaces as settings for displays, installations and performances that night owls can discover during their nocturnal strolls.

This all-night festival makes contemporary art accessible to the general public by taking it out of museums and galleries. As every year, the Nuit Blanche will be held during the first weekend of October. In 2019 that will be the 5th and 6th.

THIS YEAR’S THEME IS MOVEMENT
One of the highlights of the 2019 Nuit Blanche will undoubtedly be the transformation of the entire Paris Périphérique into a giant cycle track illuminated by artists. This offers a unique way to explore this major ring road as well as the outlying districts and suburbs of Paris.

To add to the evening’s appeal, there will be parades, plus walks that will give you the opportunity to listen to, admire and question artists and their works, which will range from performance art to dance, music and even video.

The Six Paris team suggests that you check out the full programme on the official website and they will then advise you on the best ways to reach the various venues of this new Nuit Blanche.

Convivial, warm and open, the Six Paris likes to share experiences with its guests. We sincerely recommend the Nuit Blanche because it reflects our values and offers, in a totally uninhibited way, a fascinating and fun way to discover all the richness of contemporary creativity.
