THE TERRACE
On the sun terrace of our hotel, overlooking Lake “Achensee”, you can soak up stunning panoramic views of the impressive “Karwendelgebirge” and “Rofangebirge” mountain ranges.

The emerald green water reflects the surrounding lush mountain slopes and the rock formations. The scenery is so beautiful that you will not want to leave. Sheltered from the wind and sun-kissed, the terrace is a marvellous place to spend relaxing hours, unwind, calm down and let the mind wander.

You are also welcome there to sip a refreshment or to indulge yourself with an authentic Tyrolean treat. In winter, you can taste a glass of punch cosily wrapped in a warm fluffy blanket. Our suggestion: sit back on the terrace in the evening to sip a glass of “Alpine Whisky” whilst watching the sun go down over the mountain peaks.

The excellent “Kostenzer” distillery, located in the village of Maurach only a few steps away from our hotel, is really worth a visit. For many years, the distillery has producedexquisite brandies and spirits, including the “Alpine Whisky” and the “Achensee” gin. The distillery, run by Mr Franz Kostenzer, is award-winning.

SPA & WELLNESS
Casual, natural, bright – these are some major characteristics of our small but fine “Vitalwelt” spa area. The entirely glass-fronted relaxation room and indoor swimming pool are facing the garden. Here you can spend relaxing hours or chill out after a spa treatment.

The spa area of the St. Georg Hotel essentially focuses on the balance of body and mind as well as on activity and rest. Apart from the varied opportunities for recreation, which offers our spa area, you can enjoy physical activity in the beautiful Tyrolean mountains to your heart’s content. Simply try it and feel the benefits.

Let us pamper you with relaxing and soothing baths, cosmetic treatments and massages. Indulge yourself with a “Tyrolean Stone Oil” bath, a speciality of the local area. A handy spa bag with towels, fluffy bathrobes and slippers is available free of charge throughout the stay.

When you are back to the hotel after a marvellous workout or an eventful day out in the Tyrolean Sports & Recreation Park or if you are in the mood for relaxation and idleness, you will find everything for a restful time out or a perfect spa day in our “Vitalwelt” spa area.

The Tyrolean Stone Oil is a gift from the prehistoric period and therefore is sometimes referred to as the “Curative Legacy of the Ocean”. Millions of years ago, fossil remains of animals and plants were incorporated in the rocks.

Thanks to the unique chemical composition and its high concentration of organically bound sulphur, the oil has beneficial and nurturing effects on the human body. At the St. Georg Hotel, you can indulge yourself with a pleasant and revitalising “Stone Oil” bath or the original “Stone Oil Fossil” bath.

Sit back in one of our baths or let us pamper you with a massage to get rid of tension and the stress of everyday life. Dive into the refreshing water of our indoor swimming pool or enjoy a delightful cosmetic treatment. Indulge yourself in our “Vitalwelt” spa area to recover and replenish your energy.

ACTIVITIES & EXPERIENCES
The Achensee region is full of opportunities to experience varied vacation days. Every season has its very own experiences to offer: In summer, the Achensee promises lively cooling and variety of water sports.

Hiking trails and via ferratas want to be explored, likewise bike and running routes as well as golf courses. Winter time is piste time, but winter is not just about skis and boards. Also cross-country skiers, winter hikers and ski tourers find the best conditions around the Achensee.

When waking up in the morning, you can let the eyes wander over the marvellous scenery that surrounds Lake “Achensee” snuggling under the cosy and warm duvet.

Especially in autumn, when the awesome “Karwendel” and “Rofan” mountains transform into an amazing blaze of colour, you can spend a marvellously relaxing break, whether you prefer walks and hikes choosing from countless walking routes or playing golf on the golf course in Pertisau.

A stay in this enchanting season helps you clear your mind whilst taking in wide views and the unique natural scenery.

MOUNTAIN BIKING
The surroundings of our hotel are a paradise for all bikers, providing 250 kilometres of specially waymarked mountain bike and cycle trails. The local area is one of the most popular cycling destinations in Tyrol. Given the ideal topographic conditions, there are plenty of easier routes in the local area allowing cyclists to explore the countryside during a leisurely bicycle ride.

The more gentle cycle trails run along the lakeshore and take the cyclists in one of the romantic side valleys or to well-known Alpine pastures, which can be reached easily from the villages in the valley.

If you are in the mood for a spontaneous bicycle ride, but have not brought with you your bicycle, do not worry. Our partner, “Wörndle” Sports Shop provides a wide range of services, including the hire of mountain bikes, road bikes and electric bicycles.

Enjoy adrenaline rushes taking a mountain bike ride. Throughout the holiday region, you find more or less challenging mountain bike trails to suit all tastes. These officially designated routes follow mostly quiet forest trails and country lanes.

Lake “Achensee” is also the starting point of the famous “Karwendel” route, which runs across the homonymous mountain range. The trail with a length of 237 kilometres and a total ascent and descent of 5465 metres is regarded as the “King” of tours by mountain bikers.

The “Achensee” region prides itself to be partner of the “Via Bavarica” and “Bike Trail Tyrol” long distance cycle trails. The sections along Lake “Achensee” of both cycle trails are excellently waymarked.

HIKING
Lake “Achensee” is encircled by two mountain ranges, the “Rofangebirge” to the east with easier ascents and the “Karwendelgebirge” with rugged rock faces to the west: The “Alpenpark Karwendel”, the largest nature reserve in the northern part of the Alps, is home to the biggest golden eagle population in the Alps.

Both mountain ranges provide 500 kilometres of well waymarked and maintained trails for unforgettable walking holidays. The “Achensee” region stands for a high-quality walking infrastructure. Our region has been awarded the “Mountain Trail Quality Label” by the government of the federal State of Tyrol.

The range of routes includes easy trails on level ground, starting in the village of Pertisau and leading through the valleys of the “Karwendelgebirge” mountain range, leisurely walks to Alpine pastures and challenging climbs to the top of surrounding mountains.

For an effortless ascent, you can use the “Rofanseilbahn” cable car or the “Karwendel-Bergbahn” cable car – a less strenuous way to enjoy summit experiences.

CROSSING THE ALPS
A walk across the Alps to Italy is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Making your way from Germany, across Austria to South Tyrol, you will pass majestic peaks, peaceful valleys, rustic farms and medieval castles.

The trail across the Alps, divided into seven stages, leads the walker first from Lake “Tegernsee” in the Bavarian Alps to Lake “Achensee”, the largest water body in Tyrol, and continues via the “Zillertal” Valley to the resort of Sterzing, the northernmost town of Italy. The tour, which takes a week, provides delightful walking experiences.

You will discover the traditional Bavarian culture, the proverbial Tyrolean hospitality and the famous South-Tyrolean wine. Spectacular multifaceted sceneries, different cultures, culinary delights and cosy inns for a pleasant overnight stay are major features characterising the trail.

There are hotels, boarding houses and inns of various categories to ensure a good night’s sleep so that you will always be well set up to start for the next stage. At certain points, you can continue the journey by bus, train, boat or cable car.

ADLEWEG TRAIL
Take this walk “following in the footsteps of the eagle”. The “Adlerweg” trail is a major walking route across Tyrol, being distinctively signposted, well waymarked and comprehensively described. The trail takes you across an unspoilt nature. Solely the main route, which resembles the contours of a flying eagle, offers 24 stages with 20,000 metres of ascent and descent.

The route leads from St. Johann in lower Tyrol across the “Kitzbühel Alps”, “Wilder Kaiser” mountain and “Karwendel” mountain range to St. Anton at “Arlberg” mountain and farther to the very head of “Lechtal” Valley. Three of the most beautiful stages run close to Lake “Achensee”.

In the entire “Achensee” region, there are innumerable routes for pleasant walks to suit every taste, whether you prefer strenuous and challenging hikes or leisurely walks.

The network of well waymarked and maintained hiking trails extending to 500 kilometres provides endless opportunities to enjoy amazing walking experiences. The “Achensee” Tourist Board has created an interactive hiking map containing selected routes.

RUNNING & NORDIC WALKING
The lakeshore and the valleys and mountains of the “Karwendelgebirge” provide a varied terrain with an ideal topography for running experiences. Thanks to the perfect conditions and the excellent infrastructure, the “Achensee” region is home to outstanding international events and one of the most beautiful destinations for running holidays in the Alps.

CLIMBING
The “Rofan” and “Karwendel” mountain ranges have been popular destinations among climbers for a long time. The services, facilities and climbing sites are indeed fabulous. In the mountains overlooking Lake “Achensee”, you will find innumerable places to suit all climbers, including both classic climbing sites and newly arranged, contemporary via ferrata.

In the “Rofan” mountains, you can climb up rock faces with a height of up to 400 metres, for example, the north face of “Rosskopf” mountain and “Seekarlspitze”. The “Karwendel” mountain range offers various Alpine routes, such as the via ferrata across “Brudertunnel”.

WATER SPORTS
On the shores of Lake “Achensee”, encircled by a majestic mountain scenery, you will find everything you may yearn for, except salt water. Lake “Achensee”, stretching over nine kilometres in length, is the largest water body in Tyrol, and therefore is affectionately referred to as the “Tyrolean Ocean”.

Given the unique topographic and climatic conditions, the lake is ideal for all kinds of water sports. Seize the opportunity to try your hand at kitesurfing, windsurfing or sailing.

BATHING
Holiday guests find well-kept beaches in the villages of Achenkirch, Maurach and Pertisau. The shallow water on the southern lakeshore, notably at the “Buchau” beach, is ideal for families. Here the children can safely splash around in the shallow water, which has temperature of 22 °C in summer.

SAILING, WINDSURFING & KITESURFING
Lake “Achensee” boasts most of the time ideal wind conditions, which may become at times challenging. Generally, there is a gentle southerly breeze (1 to 2 on the Beaufort scale) in the morning and a stronger northerly wind (3 to 5 on the Beaufort scale) in the afternoon, which requires power, coordination skills and cleverness to steer the boat or board over the lake.

STAND UP PADDLE
This new sport does not require particular fitness or physical abilities. Standing with the legs apart on the oversized surfboard, you can glide over the lake and watch the white sandy bottom through the clear water. The southern tip of Lake “Achensee” with its warm and shallow turquoise-coloured waters near “Buchau” beach provides a Mediterranean feel.

Stand up paddle boarding is a suitable water sport for a full-body workout, involving the legs, back, trunk and arms. Depending on the speed and the distance, this sport also helps improve the physical shape.

DIVING
The lake with its wonderful turquoise-coloured water is suitable for water sports above and beneath the waterline. However, since Lake “Achensee” is a private water body, diving is only allowed in designated areas.

GOLF
In the local area, you will find two golf courses, located in the villages of Pertisau and Achenkirch. During your golf round, you can take in fascinating views of the Alpine mountains with lush prairies and majestic rugged peaks. The gorgeous scenery makes playing golf a truly enjoyable experience.

The 18-hole golf course in the village of Pertisau, overlooked by the “Karwendel” mountain range, is one the most beautiful golf courses in the Alpine region.

The “Golf- und Landclub Achensee”, which was founded in 1934, is the most ancient golf club in Tyrol. The pleasant terrain and the marvellous setting on the shore of the largest lake in Tyrol make the golf course a real gem.

The pleasant terrain and the marvellous setting on the shore of the largest lake in Tyrol make the golf course a real gem. The “Golf- und Landclub Achensee” is one of the “Leading Golf Clubs of Austria”. All members of this exclusive society must meet stringent requirements and undergo annual inspections.

The golf course of the “Golf- und Landclub Achensee” is a very special facility in every aspect. The golf round starts in the very heart of the village and the following fairways provide a real “Alpine golf feeling”.

The cosy clubhouse invites to chill out after an enjoyable golf round, featuring a modern yet homely architecture. The precious materials and the wooden furniture create a pleasant atmosphere.

The fact that the golf course of the “Golf- und Landclub Achensee” has been the venue of the European Senior Golf Championships for three times bears witness to the excellent quality of the golf facility.

PARAGLIDING
Lake “Achensee” is very popular with paragliders. The favourable thermic conditions make any paragliding flight an exciting experience, which everyone can enjoy thanks to the tandem flights.

In the mountains overlooking Lake “Achensee” there are several take-off points, for example, “Mauritzalm” near the top station of “Rofanseilbahn” cable car or “Zwölferkopf” peak overlooking the village of Pertisau.

You can put trust in the skilfulness of professional pilots for a marvellous tandem flight in good thermic conditions over Lake “Achensee” with breathtaking views over the “Rofan” and “Karwendel” mountains. The “Rofan” mountains are a demanding paragliding site as to the atmospheric conditions, providing, however, the opportunity for long distance flights.

Due to the proximity to the lake, the area is an excellent testing terrain for manufacturers of paragliding products and for safety training. Beware of the upslope winds in the landing area.

The “Karwendel” paragliding area in Pertisau on the shore of Lake “Achensee” is suitable for paragliding courses and soaring flights as well as for safety training. Beware of upslope winds in the landing area.

NOSTALGIC EXPERIENCES

Tourism at Lake “Achensee” developed a long time ago after the opening of the “Achensee” rack railway line and the start of the lake cruises.

Since 1889, hence for more than 125 years, the venerable steam locomotives have hauled passenger trains, puffing and huffing their way up the valley. The railway climbs 440 metres on a distance of almost seven kilometres from Jenbach in the “Inntal” Valley to Lake “Achensee”.

The “Achensee” steam rack railway is the most ancient railway of its kind and the old steam locomotives are still relentlessly busy. And when the locomotive finally stops puffing on the lakeshore, a steamer of “Achensee” Lake Cruises already waits to embark the passengers for an amazing boat trip with fascinating panoramic views. The timetables are well arranged to suit the visitors.
