FORTE DEI MARMI
Forte dei Marmi is one of the most sought-after and exclusive resorts in Italy. From the early twentieth-century, the town has been the retreat of choice for celebrities and footballers, society figures and intellectuals, artists, painters, poets, from Milan, Florence and abroad.

Well-known visitors to Forte dei Marmi have included the Agnelli and Moratti families, Gabriele D’Annunzio and Guglielmo Marconi, sculptor Henry Moore and film-maker Luchino Visconti.

Forte dei Marmi often sets the fashion, breaks it, remembers the glorious 60s and plays host to the Versiliana festival. Night spots like the Capannina di Franceschi have played host to many famous Italian singers while the boutique shopping is second to none.

From the Fortress you can head out over the water, along the graceful pier, feel the intense perfume of the sea, and look back to the spectacular peaks of the Apuan Alps.

Even today, after so much history, Forte dei Marmi remains a point of reference for those wanting a relaxing holiday while enjoying quality nightlife, kept busy throughout the year from top-class restaurants, nightclubs and fashionable cafes.

HISTORY, ART & FUN
Enjoying a holiday in the area of Versilia is not just about beaches and relaxation, it is also the chance to discover a land full of surprises, history and art. If you love trips and hikes, you can head inland and find medieval villages and churches as beautiful as any in Italy. Or treat yourself to a day among the boutiques and art galleries of the intriguing town of Pietrasanta.

APUAN ALPS
Standing tall behind Forte dei Marmi are the majestic Apuan Alps, famous for the white marble they have given up to some of the most famous artworks in the world, like the Pantheon of Rome and Michelangelo’s Pietà.

The great writer Fosco Maraini loved to depict them in this way: “An unusual show, which brought to my mind, I know not why, the creation of the world: a world still-plastic, shaping itself from a boundless vacuum, the colour of fire.”

The regional park of the Apuan Alps, which recently became part of the global network of UNESCO GeoParks, is noted for its variety of landscapes and unique environments, a treasure trove of natural beauty that begs constant admiration.

The stunning scenery was formed by its fossils and minerals, but most of all by its precious marble. Hiking, mountain climbing, horse riding, biking: whatever way you choose to explore the Apuan Alps, you won’t be disappointed.

VERSILIANA PARK
The park of Versilia takes its name from the villa of the same name which lies inside it and which was built at the end of the 19th century and famous for hosting the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio. The afternoons and soirees he enjoyed there are continued, to a fashion, today.

D’Annunzio and his literary friends would wander through the pine-shaded park planning on the creation of an open-air theatre to host his own works and the great works of literature.

The park covers almost a million square metres and is today owned by the city. In this vast pine forest, in remembrance of D’Annunzio, a cultural festival takes place every summer featuring ballet, literature, music, cinema and cabaret. But it is also beloved by walkers, families and those on horseback who all enjoy the shaded, historic atmosphere.

MARINA DI PIETRASANTA
The coastline of Pietrasanta extends for almost 5 km. A must-visit is the beautiful Versiliana Park where the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio lived, and where you can walk, ride a horse or a bike immersed in the pleasantly-shaded boulevards.

Each summer the Versiliana Festival offers afternoon sessions and events (book talks, cultural debates) and entertainment programmes for children, with free games and reading sessions. Marina di Pietrasanta includes over 100 private beach areas, which are ideal for families.

PIETRASANTA
It’s impossible to be bored in Pietrasanta, there’s always something to see or do: fairs, markets, events and shows, theatre, exhibitions and cultural events. The great Italian poet Giosuè Carducci, came from these parts and often praised the local people and their ways in his works.

Above Pietrasanta lies the Rocca di Sala, an ancient Ghibelline fortress dating back to the Lombards. In Pietrasanta itself you can visit the Rocchetta Arrighina, built by Castruccio Castacani in the 14th century for his son Arrigo.

Charming and original boutiques dot the centre of town offering clothes, accessories and interior design, next to beautiful contemporary art galleries representing the artistic vibrancy of the area.

VIAREGGIO
Elegant and refined, Viareggio alternates between a lively and colourful landscape in summer and a winter of superb sunsets and tranquillity. Its promenade, dotted with original art nouveau buildings, is lined with fashion boutiques, cafes, clubs, ice-cream shops and restaurants, to suit both a romantic night out or a family evening.

Don’t miss the world-famous yearly Carnival whose parade and festival rival Rio for their costumes, and topical floats offering an unforgettable experience for young and old.

GARFAGNANA
Just an hour’s drive from Forte dei Marmi is the Garfagnana region, an area known for its unspoilt nature and tiny villages just waiting to be discovered. Its history dominated first by the Malaspina and then the Este dynasties, you can trace the heritage of castles, fortresses and old churches.

The Garfagnana is a magical place, known as the “green island” of Tuscany thanks to its lush greenery. A proud and little-discovered area, it boasts some incredible geological features, like the Botri Ravine, the Canyon of Tuscany created by water flowing through this narrow gorge.

Or the Grotta del Vento which features stalactites and stalagmites, polychrome flows, crystal-brimmed lakes, underground streams and strange eroded forms.
