Villa Roma Imperiale Forte Dei Marmi

Forte dei Marmi has a special charm. That cultivated glamour that comes from over a century of dolce vita – literates and artists, actors and some of the most distinguished families in the country mingling on the beach and gathering for informal dinners by the pools of their villas.

Poetry was composed here, songs were written. Sandy beaches, colorful cabana huts, tree-lined streets hiding elegant estates, all embraced by marble mountains.

The scene is that of a dazzling italian town, where everyone is smiling, because the sun is always shining, the food is always mindblowing and you are riding your bike barefoot to a gala dinner. There is particular way of life that needs to be embraced on this part of the coast of Tuscany.

Villa Roma Imperiale is the love child of an italian family who has been vacationing in Forte dei Marmi for generations and whose goal was to create a sancturay of the vita fortemarmina (i.e. the forte dei marmi way of life): a Villa, a home to each guest, a place where to unwind, enjoy a plate of spaghetti under the shade of a centenary pinetree and spend evenings with a deck of cards, a glass of wine and the friends of a lifetime.

Villa Roma Imperiale is all of this; the intimate, comfortable luxury of a private home, your carefree shimmering italian escape. We are ready to welcome you from April to October.

YOUR BEACH HOUSE
Your home away from home, a villa nestled in the Roma Imperiale neighborhood, surrounded by pine trees and the most beautiful private homes in Forte dei Marmi. Villa Roma Imperiale is a 31-bedroom boutique hotel, created to be every one of our guest’s private beach house.

The design is curated meticulously, with hand-picked italian pieces, tailor-made furniture and site specific art installations by local artists from Pietrasanta. “It is the sort of place to linger over a second cappuccino in the breakfast room, to curl up with a book in one of the many lounges and reading rooms, or to sunbathe by the pool.” – Forbes

At Villa Roma Imperiale, like in every home, the kitchen is always opened. You can eat at any time. Simple, home made dishes prepared by locals with local products … Exactly how it would be if your italian grandmother were managing the kitchen of your Villa.

Through the living rooms and verandas, between boungaville and pine trees, by the pool, Villa Roma Imperiale is your gateaway to that authentic Forte dei Marmi experience that has made this little town by the sea legendary.

FORTE DEI MARMI
Certain places in the world have more than a story to them – they have a legend. The small coastal town of Forte dei Marmi is one of these unique places. Born in the 1400s as a marble hub for artists such as Michelangelo, the town developed into a tiny fisherman community, nestled between long sandy beaches and white marble mountains.

At the beginning of the 20th century, some of Italy’s most prominent families sensed the towns magical beauty. Together with artists and writers from all over Europe, they escaped their cities and mundane lives, and fled to this part of the Tuscan coast.

To imagine Forte between the 20’s and 40’s, is to imagine royalty and the world’s most important families lounging on the beach enjoying a plate of Spaghetti alle Arselle, drinking wine, entertaining family and friends.

Forte dei Marmi would soon steal the heart of Thomas Mann (often seen walking the pier at sunset); inspire Gabriele D’Annuzio and his masterpiece La Pioggia nel Pineto, and keep company to Count Negroni as he enjoyed his recently invented cocktail (the ‘Negroni’) at La Capannina.

The economic boom between the 60s and the 80s contributed to making Forte dei Marmi one of Italy’s most iconic and exclusive holiday destinations. Renowned personalities in art, politics, and literature started buying their holiday homes here, defining that dolce vita lifestyle that still characterizes Forte today.

To this very day, Forte dei Marmi, remains un-touched. Colourful vintage-looking beach huts & umbrellas epitomise the “forte life”, sitting sprawled across the wide sandy beach. Here you can mingle with resident socialites, whose families have been coming for generations, and enjoy a plate of spaghetti by the shore.

From Michelin-starred restaurants to local culinary gems; high-end luxury boutiques to open-air markets; evenings relaxing at your villa to party nights at La Capannina: Forte dei Marmi has no rules.

THE CINQUE TERRE
Cinque Terre is a stretch of Mediterranean coastline, with a natural park and a marine park, both declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Long beloved by Italians, it has become a famed tourist destination worldwide in recent years.

Forte dei Marmi makes a natural starting point for day trips to this slice of heaven. Riomaggiore is only 60 km away. Five miles of shoreline for five villages perched on stone spurs in minuscule inlets: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Connecting them all is the Blue Trail, which is divided into four sections: the first is known around the world as the Way of Love (and joins Riomaggiore to Manarola in an lovely 30-minute stroll on flat land).

The five towns are also connected by a convenient local train that can be used to get effortlessly from one to the next. Cinque Terre is heaven for naturalists, and those who love pristine nature, with its many mountain paths of different levels and option for sea diving and sailing trips.

If you want to spend the night, there are many lovely but basic accommodations in private homes and bed and breakfasts, though very few four-star hotels. There are no luxury hotels. This makes Forte dei Marmi an absolutely perfect base and great alternative to the famed Ligurian towns north of Cinque Terre.

Forte dei Marmi has the advantage over those towns, like Santa Margherita and Portofino, in its large sandy beaches (rather than mainly pebbles and rocks like in other sites), a nightlife for all tastes, five Michelin-starred restaurants in the area and an exclusive destination for the best shopping.

Though trains are the most popular way to get to Cinque Terre, we think a boat is the best way to see it, affording the finest vantage points. From a boat, you can admire the sea lapping the coast on which rocky cliffs face with its perched distinctive colorful houses and the vineyards and olive trees grown here on terraces.

During the harvest time, between mid September and early October, an interesting sight is grape bunches transported in small cable cars that connect the vineyards. Or you can walk in one of the small towns and find a shaded area where the grapes are left to dry to make the famous “sciacchetrà,” a special sweet dessert wine made only in this area.

In July and August, there is a daily boat leaving from Forte dei Marmi, but for a truly unforgettable experience, we suggest a private boat trip so you can tailor your itinerary to your needs and sea conditions.

Our staff will help you choose a boat and fill out the shopping list for the galley to give the captain so he can stock up on everything you want: oysters, champagne, lobster, cool white wine, and of course bread, crackers, cheese, fruit and water.

Get picked up on the hotel in the morning and brought to the beach where a yacht tender will take you to the boat. The first stop is usually a dip on the island of Palmaria in front of Portovenere.

Then continue to Vernazza to visit what we consider the most beautiful of the five towns, where you can lunch at the Belforte restaurant on a terrace perched above the sea. You’ll usually come back before dinner, with time to get ready for a magical night out in Forte.
