Lake Manyara National Park offers a true wilderness experience in diverse habitats, from its Rift Valley soda lake to dense woodlands and steep mountainsides.

Cradled in the boughs of an ancient mahogany forest, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge blends into the natural beauty of its breathtaking surroundings.

Most people think that the famous tree-climbing lions here have developed their climbing habit to get away from annoying insects. At &BEYOND, we have our own theory – they’re jealous of our magnificent treehouse suites.

Designed to exert minimal impact on the environment, the lodge offers an exclusive interpretive safari in a more remote area of the National Park. Gentle Tanzanian hospitality is exuded from the team, who have a passion for delighting guests, whether you are on honeymoon, or a family safari.

Nine stilted treehouse suites, crafted from local timber and makuti palm fronds, boast a sophisticated blend of intimacy and romance, offering privacy and exclusivity in the cool, leafy surroundings, which often has elephant visitors passing through.

Overlooking a forest boma, or outdoor dining area, lined with traditional dugout canoes, guest areas are characterised by soaring spaces that house local artworks and tactile fabrics.

An interactive kitchen allows guests to observe, or help with, the preparation of delicious dishes that are enjoyed in the theatrical boma or on the open dining decks. Treat yourself to a massage in the massage sala, surrounded by a lush forest or relax at the pool in the heat of the afternoon.

Together you will explore the diverse habitats of the park, stopping on the lakeshore to admire the different bird species and look for pink flamingo.

You will traverse a mosaic of acacia woodlands, grassy floodplains and tall forest in search of wildlife, including Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions, which may be spotted resting in favoured spots and large family herds of elephant.

200 furry individuals can make up an Olive baboon troop who are always up for a fun time, and dark male giraffes can be seen gazing nonchalantly over the rooftops of leafy trees.

A subspecies of the common wildebeest, frolic on the lakeshore and massive buffalo bulls with impressive horns revel in the oozing muddy shallows. The elusive leopard and Cape clawless otter are occasionally encountered.

Rich in game and one of Tanzania’s smaller wilderness enclaves, Lake Manyara National Park is a magnificent terrain. A fascinating environment to be at one with nature, and really appreciate and gasp at the extraordinary world of wildlife.

Covering two thirds of the park with liquid depths is the beautiful Lake Manyara, while the rest of the Manyara ecosystem consists of lofty mountainside, flourishing marshlands, dense woodlands, sweeping grassy areas and hot springs.

Bicycle ride through Mayoka village
Guests at &BEYOND Lake Manyara Tree Lodge can enjoy a scenic guided bike ride through the Mayoka community. Drive to Mayoka to collect your bicycle and begin.

Cycle through this bustling village and interact with the friendly people, including the nomadic Mang’ati tribe, adorned with traditional animal skin cloaks, skirts and colourful beads.

A picturesque bike ride brings you to the lakeshore, where you can admire bright pink flocks of flamingos. If the birds are close enough, put on some gumboots and walk out to observe and photograph them. All proceeds go directly to the Mayoka community.

Lake Manyara is mostly well-known for its huge flocks of flamingos and its tree-climbing lions, but there’s much more that makes it well worth a visit.

Not far from the Ngorongoro Crater on the shores of Lake Manyara, is a belt of precious wilderness reserve some 100 km long that provides sanctuary for an abundance of pink flamingos which feed in the shallows of the lake, as well as tree-climbing lions, giant elephants, gentle giraffes, proud buffalos and herds of graceful antelope.

The forest areas of Lake Manyara National Park are home to many species of exotic playful monkeys and colourful, rare birds.

Treetop canopy walk
Lose yourself among the treetops of Lake Manyara on a treetop canopy tour. Stroll through the ancient forests of this magnificent national park, starting on a short boardwalk that gradually rises from ground level to the forest canopy.

Glide over a series of suspension bridges, flanked with thick netting for safety, and stop to marvel at viewing decks that blend into the massive tree trunks.

Enjoy an intimate glimpse of life in the treetops, eye-to-eye with monkeys, birds and butterflies, and accompanied by your guide. Spend an hour suspended up to 18 metres (59 feet) above the forest floor.

Boasting a magnificent bird’s eye view of the forest hopefully you will be able to spot some gorgeous wildlife in the lush foliage. Massive grey elephants barrel their way through shrubs and trees and proud buffalo brush the forest floor.

You are never far from the infinite Blue Monkeys that play, cavort and relish the opportunity to play catch, tag, and jump maniacally on the suspension bridges and, if given the chance, will go tandem with you on your canopy glide.

Listen closely and you will hear a symphony of birds chattering and tweeting, especially the trumpeting Silvery-cheeked Hornbills that swoosh past.

Night game drive
Add another dimension to your daily game drives and enter the world of Africa’s nocturnal predators on a thrilling night drive. Night drives at Lake Manyara National Part are particularly spectacular, with the moon reflecting off the lake.

After an early dinner, leave the lodge at about 20h00 and explore the park for approximately three hours. Your expert guide will take you through the park’s diverse habitats in search of nocturnal animals and sounds, giving you a completely different perspective of the lake and the Rift Valley Escarpment.

The wild animals in this park are in top notch condition, due to the dependable water supply year round. There is an abundance of elusive animals that are rarely seen in the day, but that are incredibly active at night.

Keep your eyes open, and hopefully you will be lucky enough to spot shy genets, lithe civet cats and prickly porcupines. Possibly easier to see will be the massive hippos happily foraging under a leafy tree on the road side.

Fleeting leopards often wander around the park and, even though it is not a given that you will see one, there are regular sightings of them. The kings of the jungle, the golden lions, pride themselves on sleeping all day so fortunately, you are sure to seen them as they are most mobile at night.

Cultural tour of Mto Wa Mbu town
Bustling with a variety of cultures from around Tanzania, the little town of Mto Wa Mbu lies at the entrance to Lake Manyara National Park. A local agricultural hub, the town is famous for its crops of rice and the distinctive red bananas that Tanzania is known for.

A half-day tour of the town in the company of a local guide gives travellers the opportunity to interact with local farmers, as well as artisans, craftsmen and painters. A sampling of the local banana beer adds a unique taste of local flavour.

This cross-cultural melting pot is home to approximately 120 tribes. A bustling, thriving village, it is fascinating to hear the colourful blend of languages and witness first-hand the unique customs.

Cultural diversity is seen in the various entrepreneurial ways including a farmer from Kigoma producing palm oil from palm trees that he purchased from the shores of Lake Tanganyika, and the Rangi creating colourful, beautiful mats and baskets using papyrus from the lakes and rivers.
