Moditlo River Lodge sits at the heart of the Blue Canyon Conservancy, a stretch of protected land in close proximity to the world-renowned Greater Kruger National Park, and is home to an astonishing array of fauna and flora.

Named for the gentle beast of the bushveld, Moditlo means ‘place of the elephant’, and the quiet grace of this extraordinary creature echoes throughout the lodge and its surroundings. At Moditlo we maintain the wild surrounds in which we humbly inhabit.

Moditlo is a celebration of the abundance and variety of animal, bird and plant life that you’ll find in the diverse landscape of the Great Kruger National Park. Relish your stay in our classically chic accommodation and enjoy the beauty of our glorious slice of African heaven.

Designed to provide guests with an authentic, yet luxurious African safari experience, the Main Lodge is a spacious structure of warm, natural wood and thatch with ample verandas that wrap around our various dining and entertainment areas. Here you will find a crystal-clear swimming pool, restaurant, curio shop, communal lounges and bar.

Stroll from your room down the meandering wooden walkways to enjoy a relaxing drink beside the pool as the heat of the day settles on the bushveld soil and take a moment to drink in the stark beauty of the African continent.

Lunch is long, lazy and delicious with the added option of enjoying a special high tea in true Colonial tradition. For dinner, our restaurant – Medium Rare – prepares a feast that can be served in the thatched dining area or around the campfire in our open-air boma.

Settle in for the evening and watch as our inspired chefs prepare delicious South African dishes to tempt your taste buds then wind down the evening with a drink around the crackling fire.

Sport and news enthusiasts will be happy to know that although we steer clear of televisions and other distractions in our guest rooms, we do have a private lapa with satellite TV where big matches and other important events may be viewed.

Enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail, a glass of wine or a post-meal digestif in our stylish cocktail lapa. Here, guests can watch the sunset as they sip and savour their choice of beverage under the attentive service of our professional barmen.

After an intimate ceremony in the bushveld, guests can enjoy a plated three-course meal or buffet style dinner and dance their way into the night before heading off to bed.

THE RESERVE
Pronounced ‘mo-di-tlo’, we take our name from the herds of majestic elephants that roam the whopping 36,000 acres of African bushveld that make up the reserve.Set within the Blue Canyon Conservancy at the foot of the famous Drakensberg mountain range, Moditlo is near the Greater Kruger National Park.

The Blue Canyon Conservancy boasts bio-diversity that rivals that of many of South Africa’s premier wildlife destinations. The vegetation is made up of Northern Thornveld and Southern Bushwillow Woodlands, two distinct eco-zones that each supports an abundance of animal species.

Depending on the time of year, guests can encounter elephants, leopards, rhinos, cheetahs, hippos, as well as a pack of wild dogs (the second rarest African carnivore species, with only an estimated 2000 remaining specimens). Birdwatchers are treated to ample sightings of the several hundred species of bird typical to the lowveld.

Scattered throughout the reserve are numerous lakes, perennial streams and dams that support the growth of large trees and underbrush, providing the perfect habitat for the wide variety of wildlife species that call Moditlo home. We look forward to sharing our piece of paradise with you, introducing you to an unforgettable safari destination.

GAME DRIVES & SAFARI
Join us on a morning and evening safari and see nature at its finest. No safari is the same, each morning and evening brings with it new encounters and, depending on the weather, time of year, herd behaviour and various other factors, you could encounter lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, hippos, crocodiles and the increasingly illusive rhino.

Awake early to the dawn chorus of bird song and witness the bush come alive with the rising of the sun as you venture into the veld on a morning safari. Over a cup of tea of coffee, and a snack, our guides will answer all questions, whilst describing the terrain and the possible sightings that you might witness.

Once completed, guests are driven back to the lodge to enjoy a hearty breakfast that includes everything from fresh, seasonal fruit and creamy yogurt to full English or Continental fare.

Evening Safaris begin in the late afternoon and provide guests with the opportunity to watch day-roaming animals prepare to settle in for the night, whilst our nocturnal friends emerge to stalk the plains.

Guests will be driven into the veld as the sun begins to set turning the sky brilliant shades of rose, amberand gold, before ushering in a velvet sky brimming with twinkling diamond-shaped stars. Whilst enjoying the sunset, guests are offered delicious cocktails before setting out to find night-time predators stalking their prey.

After the excitement, guests are transported back to the lodge to freshen up for dinner which is served at the thatched dining area or beneath the stars at our open-air boma.

The best months of the year for safari excursions are April-May and September-October but the changing seasons and colours of the surrounding landscape make game drives an enjoyable event no matter the time of year.
