A game reserve born of friendship and love of nature

Back in 1998, two friends, Rob le Sueur and Gordon Howard, were trout fishing together and Rob shared his dream of creating a Big Five reserve that was close to Durban, with his friend. His only struggle was that he couldn’t find any land that was suitable for starting this dream.
A year later, Gordon heard of a group of cattle farms being put on sale just 23km East of Ladysmith. He got in touch with Rob and soon thereafter they set off on horseback to explore the area.
The immense beauty of the area immediately captured both their hearts and they decided to purchase the land. In 2000, Nambiti Private Game Reserve was born.
The next five years consisted of Rob working together with conservationists and wildlife experts to plan work on the land. Fences and alien vegetation was systematically cleared and a range of game was introduced to the reserve.
Nambiti Big 5 Game Reserve is home to elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino, as well as over 30 other animal species. It is also rich in birdlife and indigenous flora.
The area surrounding Nambiti Big 5 Game Reserve is steeped in military history, with many of the region’s most brutal conflicts playing out within a stone’s throw of the reserve.
The sites of the Battles of Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift, the Siege of Ladysmith and the Battle of Blood River are a close drive away, and sobering memorials from the area’s turbulent history dotted across the landscape.
Guests can then make their own arrangements or lodge management can assist as necessary and even provide registered local tour guides if guests so wish.
