The Piazza Bar & Lounge restaurant Laid Back by Chef Akira Back offers gracious candlelit dining with the gentle sounds of the ocean setting the scene for a romantic evening.

This is the ideal venue for a sophisticated date night, and showcases the “smooth” aspect of the Island. Situated where the ocean meets the Island, the food offering in the Piazza Bar & Lounge draws on the freshest ingredients from both land and sea to give you a sumptuous dining experience.

The chefs give free rein to their imaginations as they are inspired by the seasons and flavours of Seychelles and the world beyond. A favourite dish is squid ink linguini with lobster, freshly caught red snapper, langoustines and local octopus – perfect with a cold glass of fruity Chardonnay.

Scuba Diving around North Island
Housed in a historic coral building near the Piazza, North Island’s Dive Centre offers full PADI tuition and certification. Expert Seychellois divemasters with intimate knowledge of the local reefs and the very best dive spots, plus state of the art SCUBA equipment, make for a memorable dive experience.

The dive centre features indoor and outdoor changing areas and showers, displays about the natural history of the waters off the island, and a typically warm North Island welcome from dive master Daniel and his team.

Sea-kayaks and long-boards are also available for you to explore the calm waters around the Island.

Snorkeling the Reefs 
Snorkeling in the Indian Ocean just off North Island allows you to glide along the line where the sky meets the sea, giving you a dolphin’s eye view down through the warm-crystal clear waters to the inshore reefs below – a unique perspective on remarkable marine coral and fish biodiversity.

Sea Kayaking
The perfect way to explore the calm turquoise waters around North Island as a couple… Enjoy a gentle work-out paddling in the light swell – with phenomenal views down through the crystal-clear waters to the reefs below. Encounters with harmless rays and dolphins are a real possibility!

Kayaks are the ocean equivalent of a tandem bicycle, making them a perfect activity for two. The currents are mild enough that it is possible to paddle all the way round the Island, stopping off at secluded beaches and secret coves along the way and being the first people in who knows how long to leave your footprints on stretches of pristine white sand – the same beaches where turtles have nested for millennia, and continue to do so.

Stand Up Paddling
For a more challenging marine workout, check out a paddle board from the dive centre and adopt a more balanced approach to life, in the warm waters off East Beach.

There is nothing quite like the view of North Island when you are standing on the sea – and the sure knowledge that just a short paddle away is a refreshing fruit smoothie, crisp glass of white wine, or a restorative North Island club sandwich!

It can take a few attempts to master paddle boarding but if at first you don’t succeed, try again – or paddle back to the Piazza to recharge your batteries, and try and resist the siren call of the waves, luring you out again…

Our boat captains know these waters like the backs of their hands, and the best places to throw in a line depending on the time of day, wind direction and sea conditions. And if there’s a lull between bites, you can always enjoy the views of the Island, or spotting dolphins cavorting in front of the prow.

Sunset Cruises
Cruise around North Island to explore our private shores from the sea, and drop anchor as the sun begins to dip below the horizon. The best way for guests to enjoy the tranquil waters of the Indian Ocean is with a champagne flute in hand.

In the other, you will find mouth-watering canapés to whet your appetite for dinner upon your return. If luck is on your side, you might see dolphins dancing in the wake of the boat. Or witness a ‘flock’ of flying fish aflutter as you pass them by.

Cycling 
Each villa has two quality bikes, so you to explore the island at your own pace, in search of tortoises or a cocktail at West Beach Bar.

The Island’s gentle gradients and shady forest paths are ideally experienced by bicycle, giving you the chance to spot colourful birds as they go about their daily routines, unfazed by the sound of whirring wheels.

We’ll gladly prepare snacks and drinks for your wanderings, or meet you at a secluded sweep of sand with a picnic or drinks. Private Beaches
The sand on the idyllic North Island beaches feels soft and fluffy – almost like powdered sugar underfoot. The tides have been moving sand up and down the beaches on a cyclical basis for millennia, washing and refining it.

Having our beach sand replaced so often means that we are always walking on fresh, uncompacted sand – it’s not uncommon to literally be the first person to walk on a beach at North Island.

East Beach
Every villa has direct, discreet access to the Island’s main beach, a ribbon of gleaming sand which runs almost the entire length of the island from the Piazza Bar & Lounge to Villa North Island.

West Beach
Sunset Beach by Chef Akira Back gives the tradition of sundowners a whole new relevance and significance, as impressive Impressionist shades chase each other across the sky in the wake of the descending sun. Each day’s sunset sees the beach washed in pastel colours as you enjoy a relaxing evening cocktail or two…

Honeymoon Beach
One of the world’s most romantic beaches, thanks to its private location in a curve of the rocks. The ideal place for a long, lazy afternoon reconnecting and an idyllic hideaway for beach picnics.

Beach Movement
A natural phenomenon on North Island, the beaches migrate around the island in a ceaseless seasonal pattern dictated by the ocean currents. Depending on the stage of the cycle at the time of your visit, some beaches will be wider or narrower than others.

All however are always inviting, and their location around the island means that whichever way the maritime breezes are blowing, you will easily find a sheltered, shady spot of your own to enjoy.

Swimming Pool
A short walk from the Piazza along a shaded forest path reveals one of the island’s best-kept secrets. North Island’s 45-metre main swimming pool was created for many but is most often enjoyed only by two.

All 11 villas feature their own plunge pool, but it’s worth venturing out to experience the main pool’s architectural beauty. Designed to blend seamlessly with the environment, North Island’s infinity pool is carved into the granite slopes of Spa Hill, curving around giant boulders as it weaves its way along the contour, with azure water that vanishes into infinite ocean views.

The steep shady banks create the feeling of a hanging garden, with pockets of private decks and comfortable loungers that look back across a kilometre of beach all the way to Grand Paloss.

Conservation
North Island is a fertile paradise – the perfect setting for our Noah’s Ark conservation and island rehabilitation programme. The natural beauty of North Island will touch and inspire you at the deepest level.

Sustainability
North Island has been alternatively neglected and exploited throughout its history. Many alien species of plants and animals remained behind after the copra plantation on North Island became uneconomical in the 1970s.

These alien species thrived and greatly impacted the indigenous Seychellois flora and fauna. In tandem with creating a world-class eco-tourism destination, we have been working hard to restore North Island to its former glory.

The first phase of the rehabilitation was to successfully eradicate alien rodents and to this day North Island remains one of the largest islands in the Seychelles ever to have been entirely de-ratted.

Stringent control measures are in place to ensure they never return as they posed a major threat to ground-nesting birds. Feral animals such as goats, cats and cattle were also removed.

Invasive plant species are being progressively cleared, and replaced by thousands of indigenous plant and tree seedlings grown in our on-island nursery and then transplanted throughout the island.

In this way, the native habitat has been restored to the extent that North Island is once again a place where endemic Seychellois fauna and flora can flourish.

Evidence of the success of this programme has been the fact that bird species such as Seychelles Blue Pigeons and breeding populations of Wedge-tailed Shearwaters and White-tailed Tropicbirds have returned of their own accord. Hawksbill and Green Turtles nest on our beaches once more, in ever increasing numbers.

Turtles
North Island is a critically important nesting site for two species of sea turtle, the Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas). Both species have been legally protected in Seychelles waters since 1994.

Green Turtles are the most herbivorous of all turtles, while the Hawksbill in contrast uses its sharp beak to feed on sponges and other marine invertebrates. Green Turtles are the larger of the two species.

As with all sea turtles, females laboriously drag themselves up a favoured beach and dig a nest using their hind flippers. The eggs then take around two months to hatch. Hawksbills typically nest in the daytime whereas Green Turtles emerge from the sea at night.

Hawksbill nesting season is from September to March, while the Green Turtle nesting season runs from January to September. Monitoring and recording of sea turtle nesting activity has been in place since 1998, with systematic data collection since 2004.

The island has seen the number of Hawksbills utilising the island double, together with a remarkable 6-fold increase in the number of Green Turtles. North Island has the highest density of nesting Green Turtle of the inner island of the Seychelles.

Every morning, dedicated on-site conservationists together with eco-tourist volunteers patrol the four beaches for signs of turtles. Turtle nests are marked out and labelled with bamboo sticks and a coconut, stating the date laid and the species.

All the data recorded is captured in our turtle database. Turtles which already have identification tags are recorded and those without are given unique titanium tags.

Seychelles White Eye
While some bird species returned of their own accord once North Island again afforded them a suitable habitat, others needed a little more help. A

t the time one of the rarest birds in the world, a founder population of just 25 Seychelles White-Eyes was reintroduced to North Island in 2007, and their population on the island is now more than five times its original size.

These tiny, charismatic birds have set up territories across the island and the growth in their numbers shows that they are breeding successfully.

Continuing efforts to rehabilitate the vegetation on North Island as well as the dramatic reduction in the Common Myna population are undoubtedly contributing to the continued increase in the Seychelles White-eye population.

Thanks to this reintroduction programme, and similar efforts on other islands, the Seychelles White-Eye has been brought back from the brink of extinction. North Island is responsible for a significant proportion of the world population of the species: a responsibility we bear with genuine pride.

Aldabra Giant Tortoise
The Aldabra Giant Tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea), one of the largest tortoise species on Earth, is endemic to the Aldabra atoll, Seychelles. Formerly giant tortoises were found on many Indian Ocean islands but became extinct historically due to exploitation by sailors from passing ships.

Live tortoises would be taken on board ships to supplement meagre rations. In 1997, only a handful Giant Aldabra Tortoises were left on the island, including the well-known big males Brutus and Patrick.

Currently between 80 and 100 tortoises roam North Island free from harm, most of which were donations from other islands, with some as old as 150 years of age. Baby tortoises under the age of two can also be seen in our baby-tortoise pen, where they are protected until big enough to be seen on the roads.

Marine Conservation
North Island’s vision is a declared Ecological Marine Reserve, further protecting the area from fishing and potentially harmful marine activities.

The island’s Marine Protected Area proposal is supported by data collection by means of biannual scientific marine surveys conducted by trained marine biologists since 2011. The surveys quantify the diversity and abundance of the reef fish, hard and soft corals, marine invertebrates and predatory species.

This is supported by continuous reef monitoring carried out by our resident Environmentalists and ecotourism volunteers on a daily basis, as well as by the Dive Centre and guests who wish to get involved. North Island site-specific fish identification slates are used on dives and snorkels, enabling key species to be identified and additional data to be compiled and monitored.

North Island has also recently purchased our own BRUVs (baited remote underwater videos) which help in closely monitoring predatory species – which come in all shapes and sizes, from sharks to groupers and octopus. A healthy and diverse predatory guild is an indication of a healthy reef ecosystem.
