Our staff will give you a wake-up call at your discretion while hot coffee and tea is already brewing. You can return to the lodge for a breakfast after your morning safari, or you can continue exploring the Masai Mara National Reserve and the Siana Conservancy with a bush breakfast and picnic lunch to have a full day in the park.

Trained local guides

Our safari guides are well trained and certified by the Kenya Wildlife Service. They are passionate about their culture and wildlife and will happily share their vast knowledge with you.

In addition to our in-house guides, Spirit of the Masai Mara offers you the opportunity to upgrade your safari package by selecting from our list of exclusive freelance safari guides. These experienced individuals distinguish themselves through their long-standing experience and knowledge of the wildlife in the Masai Mara.

For the nocturnal safari guest – night game drives

As night falls, the stars light up brightly in the velvety blue darkness of the Masai Mara and a spectacular nocturnal theatre begins. It is the hour of the big cat predators who get ready to hunt but also of rare nocturnal animals such as aardvarks, honey badgers and genets. The experience of a night game drive is one that cannot be missed – the smells are stronger, the sounds are reduced to the occasional calls and roars of the predators and even the most frequently seen animals take on another appearance in the light of the moon and stars.

Your nocturnal adventure can be booked upon arrival at our reception.

Bird viewing

More than 570 bird species can be found in the Masai Mara, making it the perfect place for ornithologists to see a rare bateleur or saddle billed stork. For real twitchers we suggest you take advantage of the services of Ohad, one of our freelance guides, an expert with an in-depth knowledge and vast experience of the birds of East Africa. Special care has been taken with the vegetation surrounding the lodge to encourage a wide variety of bird species that can be viewed from your suites.

HOT AIR BALOONING
For the lightheaded traveller – hot air balloon safaris

Early morning is the ideal time to see wild animals on the plains. Experience the crisp fresh air of the Masai Mara Game Reserve, silently floating above in a hot air balloon. The balloon lifts off at dawn after coffee and a flight briefing. The one hour flight will give you a birds eye view of the best East Africa has to offer. After your champagne breakfast you will enjoy a game drive back to the lodge.

Balloon safaris include landing fees and a champagne breakfast upon landing. Prices range from 450 to 550 USD per person.

Due to high demands during the high season from June to September, please be advised to book your balloon safari prior to your arrival. During mid and low season, balloon safaris can be booked via our reception desk upon your arrival in the Masai Mara.

COMMUNITY VISITS
For the community experience – visit a Masai village

Spirit of the Masai Mara offers excursions to the nearby Masai village for a first-hand experience of the Masai culture and lifestyle. Enjoy the traditional Masai dances and jumping contests and learn from the Masai how to make fire and use a spear and bow and arrow. If you are lucky, you can experience the ceremonial rituals when young Masai transition from childhood to warrior to elder.

The visits to the Masai village are only arranged on special requests of our guests and at the convenience of our Masai hosts.

THE MASAI MARA GAME RESERVE
The Masai Mara is known as one of Africa’s greatest wildlife reserves, situated in southwest Kenya. It is named in honour of the Masai people (the ancestral inhabitants of the area) and their description of the area when looked at from afar: “Mara,” which is Maa (Masai language) for “spotted,” an apt description for the circles of trees, scrub, savanna, and cloud shadows that mark the area.

The Masai Mara National Reserve is famous for the abundance of big cats – lion, leopard and cheetah – the Great Wildebeest Migration and the Masai people. With an area of more than 1.500 km2, stretching over large open grasslands and acacia forests, the Masai Mara offers the opportunity to view some of the worlds most ancient and most threatened creatures. Over 95 species of mammals and 570 species of birds can be seen in this magnificent national reserve.

Geographically the Masai Mara Ecosystem is part of the great Lake Victoria It is bounded by the Serengeti Park to the south, the Siria escarpment to the west, and Masai pastoral ranches to the north, east and west. Rainfall in the ecosystem increases markedly along a southeast–northwest gradient, varies in space and time, and is markedly bimodal. The Sand, Talek River and Mara River are the major rivers draining the reserve. Shrubs and trees fringe most drainage lines and cover hillslopes and hilltops.

THE WILDEBEEST MIGRATION
An incredible spectacle is the Great Wildebeest Migration, also referred to as one of the “Seven New Wonders of the World”. From July to October, over two million zebras and wildebeest migrate from the Serengeti National Park to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara. The most spectacular event in the annual migration is the crossing of the Mara River.
Spirit of the Masai Mara offers you the opportunity to join us and witness this truly breathtaking event.
