SOSSUSVLEI EXCURSION
This half day adventure into the Namib Naukluft National Park that features the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Namib Sand Sea, takes you down an open valley between towering red dunes.

Take in and photograph the striking scenic beautify of the area as you drive in, best seen when the light is still throwing shadows off the ridges of the dunes. Your guide will chat about how the ecosystem and interesting Aeolian geological processes were formed as well as about life in this formidable environment.

There will be a chance to walk to Deadvlei, where some 70 camel thorn tree trunks, 900 years dead, remain standing on a bleached clay pan. Perhaps climb a sand dune, and for the fit and adventurous, conquer the towering ‘Big Daddy’.

HOT AIR BALLOON FLIGHT
Hot Air Balloon adventures in Sossusvlei promise a truly unique way to experience Namibia’s brilliant vista. This soul-satisfying journey offers excellent photographic opportunities and lifelong memories. Awaken before dawn and set out in the early morning moonlight to a designated launch site, where you can watch excitedly as the balloons are brought to life.

Giant, hot bursts of flame slowly inflate the brightly coloured nylon, strung to robust baskets that rest on their side. As the sun’s first rays peek over the scarlet sand dunes, the hot air balloon drifts slowly upward, revealing the undulating landscapes of Sossusvlei.

Watch as mighty herds of orxy shrink in size below you and spot the enigmatic fairy circles, which stand out as indented circular patches devoid of vegetation, an intriguing phenomenon of the Namib Desert.

The balloon soars at varying heights and gradually rotates with the morning breeze, constantly giving you a new perspective of the desert. Many animals gaze up at the neon ball in surprise and curiosity as it passes overhead.

The seasoned pilot will eventually select the perfect landing spot, just in time for a grand celebratory bubbly breakfast, where you can recap the morning’s bucket list moment as you savour a delicious morning meal.

HIKING
Explore the lodge surrounds on foot and walk in the footsteps of desert-adapted wildlife. Take the time to sit in the stillness under a unique quiver tree and be enchanted by the views from atop the mountains.

There are two defined hiking trails, a 2.2 km (1.4 mi) or a 3.4 km (2.1 mi) route waiting to be explored. Combine this with the e-bike self-exploration option on our ‘bike and hike’ adventure.

You can enjoy the 19 km (11.8 mi) route or you can shorten your ride on the 11 km (6.2 mi) route as our cycle path has been designed in a figure of 8 shape. Our team will assist you in setting yourself up on the bike and you will be provided with a pack including water, snacks and a radio.

You can also combine your cycle with a hike – we like to call it our ‘bike and hike’ adventure. A leisurely form of exercise, these Specialized e-bikes will provide hours of fun in a breathtaking environment; ideal as a fun family excursion. Choose to do this activity with a guide or you can also explore the surrounds at leisure.

SSCENIC HELICOPTER FLIGHTS
The ideal way to capture the beauty of the surrounds is with a scenic helicopter flight over the breathtaking vast expanse of the desert. From your birds-eye perspective, be captivated by rolling sand dunes, craggy mountain tops, solidified rock formations and enchanting fairy circles.

NAMIB DUNE PHOTOGRAPHIC FLIGHT
Avid photographers will enjoy this 90 min photographic flight showcasing the best of the Namib Desert. This flight extends to the ocean, where the red dune belt drops 152m (500ft) into the sea.

Observe a seal colony at Black Rock and fly with doors off allowing you to capture red dunes, resident desert-adapted wildlife, rocky mountains and sandy plains. This experience includes a stopover in the dunes to enjoy a glass of champagne.

Hear about how the oldest and second driest desert on earth came to be and observe the many small and some uniquely adapted creatures that have managed to make this harsh environment – literally called “the living desert” – their home.

Watch as your guide reads the signs in the sand and join him as he tracks diurnal lizards, endemic dune larks and even, if you are in luck, a Grant’s golden mole. The story of the desert’s ecology is literally written in the sand.

These creatures are not alone as they battle against the elements. The Namib Desert is host to a number of unique alien-looking desert-adapted plants. Huab Lodge, situated in Damaraland Namibia, began as an idea to generate funds to save Namibia’s desert–dwelling elephants from being harassed and shot. Since 1992 awareness has increased, as has tourism and the “value” of the elephant is changing.

The original farmland is a small, unique area called Monte Carlo which boasts stunning views bisected by the mostly dry Huab River. The former rest camp which accommodated tourists in the 1970s now houses the lodge’s staff.

At a special site just down river from the old rest camp, where the Germans built the so-called German Bath in the late 1800s, Huab Lodge was erected. Despite its size the unique main building blends well into its surroundings.

The irregular thatch roof mirrors a mountain on the opposite bank. The lodge’s stone and thatch bungalows spread along the elevated north bank of the river ensuring a private and magnificent view – even from the shower!

Huab Lodge with all it has to offer and being off the beaten track is not a place for a single night-stop. You should allow several days to enjoy and absorb the tranquillity and quiet, the welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, and the many activities at the lodge. There is an airstrip directly nearby the lodge.

THE HISTORY
Huab Lodge, built at a special site just down river from the old rest camp which accommodated tourists in the 1970s, and where the German occupiers built the so-called ‘German Bath’ in the late 1800s, is situated on a private nature reserve right on the edge of Namibia’s ‘Damaraland’, a ruggedly beautiful area in North West Namibia, famed for its populations of desert-adapted elephants and lions, as well as other iconic Namibian wildlife like black rhinos, zebra, gemsbok (oryx), and more.

It was in fact a desire to help generate funds for the conservation of these elephants that led to the founding of Huab Lodge, and that desire still forms part of both the philosophy and practice of the lodge.

When the founders of Huab Safari Ranches, a merging of commercial and communal land, first came across this part of the Huab Valley in 1992, and learned of the plight of the elephants, they founded the private nature reserve to act as a buffer between the elephants and other wild animals and neighbouring farmers, with whom conflict could have easily occurred.

The ephemeral Huab River, which runs through the 20-thousand-acre nature reserve, provides numerous natural water sources which attract wildlife and the once severely overgrazed farmland, having been completely given over to wildlife, is returning to its once pristine condition.

Indigenous flora can once again proliferate and provide food and refuge for the wildlife, birds, insects, and reptiles of the area. The last three decades of care, and a strict ‘hands-off’ and ‘no-shooting’ policy, have also brought about remarkable changes, with the number of kudu, oryx, mountain zebra, and springbok resident in the area rebounding.

ACCOMMODATION
Despite its size, the unique main building blends well into its surroundings, with the irregular thatch roof mirroring the mountain range on the southern banks of the river. Open on all sides, natural rock islands protrude into the main lapa area, and at the rear, the bar offers striking views of the swimming pool, and along the river valley.

A newly built reception area next to the main lapa offer guests the opportunity to book activities, discuss their itinerary, and find out anything else they wish to know. In keeping with the ambiance at Huab, meals are enjoyed at a family table.

Here it’s about making friends, exchanging opinions, kicking off your shoes, and making yourself at home. A variety of less wellknown South African wines are presented with dinner, for guests to appreciate and enjoy.

Huab Lodge is located at the end of a 35km off the beaten track cul de sac, making it the ideal place to stop over for two nights or more. In fact, giving yourself several days to enjoy and absorb the tranquillity and quiet, the welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, and the many activities at the lodge, is highly recommended.

For those who do not wish to drive themselves, there is an airstrip in close proximity to (1km) the lodge and guests who fly in are picked up and chauffeured to the lodge and back.

Huab Lodge’s eight spacious, extensively refurbished, stone and thatch bungalows – accommodating a maximum of 16 guests – are spread along the elevated north bank of the river ensuring a magnificent and private view of the Huab River Valley, even from the shower!

Each bungalow has a large private patio and is tastefully furnished with two extra-long double beds. Large windows and sliding doors allow in both light and a view across the Huab. There is in fact no need to even close the curtains – rather watch the stars and listen to the calls of owls and barking geckos as you drift off to sleep.

The Lodge provides 24-hour 220-volt power thanks to a silent solar energy plant concealed on the hill, and the chemically untreated water has a neutral pH value.

Each bungalow is equipped with mosquito nets and a ceiling fan, and while there are no coffee and tea facilities inside the rooms, an early morning beverage can easily be arranged should guests request such. Huab Lodge also has a bungalow with limited facilities for physically challenged guests.

THERMAL SPRING
At Huab Lodge you can take a plunge in our swimming pool and day-dream on the deck chairs and pool beds while watching the colourful birds at the birdbath, or enjoy the soothing benefits of the natural thermal spring which bubbles up out of the ground at about 60 degrees Celsius but is maintained in the ‘bath’ at between 37 and 40 degrees.

The thermal bath is located beneath a sweeping thatched roof below a granite kopje (hillock), typical of the area. The roof is cut away so the southern skies are visible when lounging at night, listening to the jackals, owls, and barking geckos while taking advantage of the soothing and restorative nature of the minerals in the water.

EPHEMERAL RIVER DRIVE
From the lodge, you depart in the direction of the ephemeral Huab River, passing Khorixas, towards the petrified forest where large tree trunks have, over millions of years, “turned to stone”. A packed breakfast is enjoyed en route under a huge sandstone mountain, from where the journey continues towards the Huab River.

After turning into the Huab we will stop for a mid-morning snack along one of its tributaries and discuss the plans for the day. With fences having, for the most part, been removed in the Damaraland area, the desert-adapted elephant are free to roam the entire area and the morning/mid day will be spent exploring both the Huab and Aba-Huab rivers, in search of these magnificent behemoths.

At lunchtime, we will find a shady spot to stop and have a bite, before starting the slow meander back to the lodge, stopping off at some unusual and unique sites along the way, aiming to return to the lodge before sunset

SCENIC & SUNDOWNER DRIVE
A drive is offered in a game viewer vehicle, departing the lodge after breakfast to explore the nature reserve and the beauty of the morning. Another drive is offered in the late afternoon, taking in the magnificent Namibian sunset, along, of course, with the obligatory sundowner

WALKING & HIKING IN NAMIBIA’S DAMARALAND
Early morning walk offered either before or after breakfast, the best time to do these walks is before the sun reaches its zenith as, even in winter, temperatures can rise to 30 degrees during the day and most animals prefer to find shelter during that time of the day. Longer walking routes for the fitter, or more adventurous guest, can be offered though.

UNIQUE ROCK ART 
At Huab Lodge there are several more activities to do. Nowhere else in Namibia will you find more rock paintings than in the Damaraland Region. Some shards and old tools can be found that were used by the San people hundreds of years ago.

STARGAZING IN NAMIBIA 
If you are interested in stargazing just before the sun comes up is often a good time. Because of the remote location of the lodge there is no light pollution at night which gives you the opportunity to have a better view of the stars than anywhere else in the world.

There is a telescope available so you can take a look at Saturn’s rings or Jupiter’s moons or wonder at the bright colours of the Jewel Box in the Southern Cross.

BIRDWATCHING IN NAMIBIA
Huab Lodge in Damaraland Namibia has become a Mecca for bird watchers and photographers. Late September the Olive bee-eater arrives to breed in Namibia and delight us with his call and brilliance, staying until mid April. The violet-backed starling, the rosy-faced love bird and the boisterous bare-cheeked babbler can be seen from camp. There is a hide just below the main house for bird watching and photography.

Accommodation at Onguma – The Fort consists of The Sultan Suite, which is located within the Main Tower Building. 11 Bush Suites and 1 honeymoon Suite, all situated adjacent to the Main Fort extending on both sides to the south and the north.

Every Bush Suite is completely private and about 50 meters apart from one another and is equipped with a bar fridge, and an air-conditioner for those warmer days.

The spacious bathroom has both an inside shower as well as an outside shower area. From every area of the room, wooden decks lead you towards the outside seating area and sun loungers for just relaxing and enjoying the extraordinary view.

In addition, the one and only Sultan Suite is situated inside the Main Tower of the main complex. It has a large beautifully designed bedroom that leads into a lounge area and out onto a small private viewing deck.

The lounge is equipped with a satellite television system, a bar fridge and telephone facilities. And for those warm evenings, you have an air-conditioner as well. The large bathroom has a wonderful open shower area, as well as a bath in which to relax and reflect upon your day’s experiences.

BUSH BREAKFAST
For that wild experience, why not enjoy breakfast in the bush away from the camp. Enjoy an al fresco breakfast in the middle of the bush surrounded by the wilderness overlooking the vast open plains with Fischers Pan in the distance.

On offer is an array of fresh seasonal fruits, cereals, yoghurt, pastries and an assortment of cheeses & cold meat cuts on display. This is accompanied by a hot egg dish cooked by your team of private chefs on an open fire with optional fried sides typically bacon & tomatoes not to forget the freshly baked bread baked taken straight from the coals.

BUSH DINING

Whether it’s an early morning breakfast at the start of a brand new African day or dinner under a blanket of a million stars with the distance cries of animals in the air and the smells of a fire cooked meal wafting over from the pop-up bush kitchen.

These are the genuine moments that make you feel truly connected to the wilderness. We offer two venues to host these experiences namely “The Boma” for larger parties or “The Kraal” for a more intimate dining experience.

The word Boma dates back to pre-colonial Africa and was used in many parts of the African Great Lakes region, including Central and Southern African. The word actually originates from Swahili and is traditionally known as an enclosure, a stockade or fort used to protect people’s livestock (usually sheep and cattle).

It was typically built out of branches knit together.
The Boma has long become a part of the African culture, where a fire is lit, delicious foods are prepared and friends and family gather around the fire to eat, drink and share in storytelling.

Noun – Kraal (also spelled craal or kraul) is an Afrikaans and Dutch word, also used in South African English, for an enclosure for cattle or other livestock, located within a Southern African settlement or village surrounded by a fence of thorn-bush branches, a palisade, mud wall, or other fencing, roughly circular in form. It is similar to a boma in eastern or central Africa.

This enclosure has wonderful views over the plains and Fischers Pan where animals roam freely and the best sunsets on Onguma can be found. An open fire and comfortable beanbags complete the picture for a memorable experience.

ETOSHA GAME DRIVES
Etosha is a 22 750km² wildlife sanctuary in Namibia – one of Africa’s most stable and accessible countries. Etosha, meaning ‘place of dry water’, and refers to a flat calcrete depression (or pan) of about 5 000km².

The ‘Pan’ (overlooked by the Onguma Reserve) provides a great, parched, silver-white backdrop of shimmering mirages to an area of semi-arid savannah grassland and thorn scrub.

The pan itself contains water only after very good rains and sometimes for only a few days each year, but is enough to stimulate the growth of a blue-green algae which lures thousands of flamingos. Our Etosha Game drives take guests into the Etosha National Park in the mornings and afternoons and are guided by our expert guides and in our open-sided vehicles.

There are close on 114 species of mammal in Etosha. They include the black-faced impala – there are no southern impala in the park – and the threatened black and white rhino. There are however no buffalo, hippo, crocodile or monkeys, but there is enough to keep you enthralled on a game drive.

ONGUMA SUNDOWNER DRIVES
Onguma Nature Reserve consists of 34 000 hectares of Namibian wilderness & is home to numerous plains game, more than 300 bird species and even 4 of the Big 5. Joining an Onguma Sundowner drives is the perfect way to end your day.

The Reserve incorporates ecological substrata such as savannah, bushveld, omuramba and dry pan. Age-old and well-worn migration routes, once used by elephant and buffalo wander through Onguma’s three dry riverbeds.

The Reserve boasts over thirty different animal species. Plains game roam freely on the Reserve and predators although not always easy to spot, are nevertheless common residents of the area. Lions and Cheetahs are frequently seen and often heard.

There is a healthy black rhino and leopard population and hyenas are also often seen and heard. All of which can be spotted during our Sundowner Drives. Join us on an afternoon sundowner nature drive on the Onguma Reserve where our expert guides will explain the many intricacies of the bush.

INTERPRETIVE BUSH WALKS
Africa takes on a new perspective when you experience it on foot as the first explorers did. A bush walk is a unique physical, mental and spiritual adventure through nature. Experience the sights, smells and sounds of the Namibian bush by conducting an early morning leisurely walk accompanied by one of our experienced armed rangers.

Our interpretive bush walks will bring you closer to nature by exposing you to the intimate detail of our surroundings. It is a chance to exist for a period of time in the original, primitive atmosphere of the wilderness; to watch from a respectful distance the intimate lives of wild animals of the African bushveld.

ONKOLO HIDE
Onguma’s fabulous new water-level hide affords guests a great opportunity to calmly sit and enjoy nature unobserved. Amateur and professional photographers alike love the angles and light from this equipped hide.

There is a small ablution facility nearby Onkolo Hide, benches from which to view the surroundings and lots of windows and vantage points for creative camera angles.

ROMANTICALLY ADVENTUROUS SLEEPOUT
The Dream Cruiser is Onguma’s newest and most exciting addition for adventurers, romantics and those who like being close to nature will love this new experience. Custom built onto a Land Cruiser, it offers guests the opportunity to spend a romantic and / or adventurous night in the wilderness of the reserve.

Built on two levels, the Dream Cruiser features a full bathroom downstairs complete with shower, flush toilet and basin whilst the upper deck features a bedroom with lounge area. A ranger is on call via a two-way radio so make the most of this time and relax in the safety and complete comfort of this unique space.

A night on the Dream Cruiser calls for al fresco dining as the sun sets over Onguma and the evening sounds start to come alive. Guests will find a picnic-style selection of food and pre-selected chilled drinks on offer. (If you are celebrating, ask about our special wine or champagne.)

SUPERIOR UNITS
The 44 individual Superior Units at Sossusvlei Lodge are uniquely designed to blend in perfectly with the natural surrounding environment. Each of the Superior Units boasts a patio to enjoy the magnificent views over the Desert landscapes and ridges of the Naukluft Mountains.

The spacious air-conditioned bedroom features twin beds, comfortable corner couch, luggage racks, shelves, hanging space and an in-room safe and a complimentary turn-down service. In addition there is a refreshment area with a fridge and tea / coffee making facilities.

Each of the stylish en-suite bathrooms is equipped with a comfortable corner bathtub, spacious shower, toilet, double vanity and signature amenities. Two of the Superior Rooms are designed to be handicapped and wheelchair friendly featuring no steps and are equipped with wider doors. STANDARD FAMILY UNITS
The Standard Family Units feature two rooms back to back connected by a lockable inter-leading door between the two private bathrooms. Each room still features a patio to enjoy views over the Desert landscapes.

Each private en-suite bathroom features a double vanity, toilet, spacious walk-in shower and signature amenities. Please note that these rooms are located furthest away from the main reception building, pool and restaurant (approx. 250 m) – not suitable for people with walking difficulties.

THE RESTAURANT
Sossusvlei Lodge is well known for sensational cuisine and many guests have praised our famous buffet dinner experience. The al fresco terrace offers magnificent views over Elim Dune and of the floodlit waterhole where you can watch the passing parade of oryx, springbok, jackal, ground squirrel and ostrich, whilst enjoying exquisite food and wine.

ACACIA BEER GARDEN

THE SWIMMING POOL
A refreshing dip in the sparkling swimming pool at Sossusvlei Lodge will go a long way after a hot day of sightseeing in the Sossusvlei area. This unique pool is inspired by the constellation of the Southern Cross and features underwater seating areas where one can enjoy the breath-taking views over the Desert landscapes.

Guests can laze on the sunbeds provided underneath cabanas dotted around the pool and relax with a good book or enjoy a few beverages from the bar. Pool towels are available at reception.

There are quite a few books available to read from the bookshelf in the lounge area. The pool is only available to paying guests and is used at one’s own risk. Children must be under the supervision of a responsible adult at all times.

SUNDOWNER & NATURE DRIVE
Depart from Sossusvlei Lodge in the late afternoon on a leisurely drive on the Lodge’s private reserve. Watch the shadows lengthen as your guide takes you out to a panoramic location where sundowner drinks will be served as you relax and watch the spectacular sunset. The inner tranquillity that a desert sunset imparts while you sit amongst nature is really something special.

SOSSUSVLEI & DEADVLEI EXCURSION
An early start from the Lodge to enter the Namib-Naukluft Park at sunrise, while the temperature is still mild and when the dune contrasts are at their best.

You will travel in one of our all-terrain URI Gameviewer vehicles, custom-built in Namibia for the Lodge, with your own specially trained guide who will share all his knowledge of the area, animals, plant life and much more with you.

Regular stops are made on the spectacular ±60 kilometre drive through the dune corridor down to the Vlei to gain information or take in the vistas. At Dune 45, we make a stop to view the the world’s most photographed dune. Further along, a gradual 2,6 kilometer round-trip guided walk up to Dead Vlei is a must for the healthy visitors.

The more energetic have the opportunity to climb to the upper ridge of Big Daddy Dune, one of the highest dunes in this area! We spend time exploring Sossusvlei before returning to the Lodge approximately 5½ hours later in time for lunch.

HELICOPTER FLIGHTS
Discover the majesty of the Namib Desert by Helicopter! Our Pilots are well experienced and will guide you through the scenery on an adventurous and informative flight.

We offer a range of scenic flights over the breath-taking grass plains to the towering dunes of Sossusvlei and the hidden mysteries of Deadvlei. Exciting flips over the Sesriem Canyon, Dune 45 and Elim Dune as well as custom built flights for photographers that wish to focus on specific areas of the Namib.

SCENIC FLIGHTS
Desert Air have a well-maintained 5-seater Cessna 210 light aircraft permanently based on the Sossusvlei Lodge property along with an experienced pilot who also doubles as a trained “aerial” desert guide.

HOT AIR BALLOONING
“Up, up and away” as you sail silently over the reddish dune sea of the Namib. Add an exhilarating dimension to your visit to the desert. The duration of the excursion is approximately 3½ hours. The Hot Air Balloon flight itself takes about one hour and ends with an exclusive Champagne Breakfast at the landing spot in scenic nature.

Due to the desert temperatures this activity is offered in the mornings only. Guests are required to depart from our Lodge to the Namib Sky ballooning base at least an ½ hour before sunrise with their own vehicles.

The balloon rises as the sun rises. The first light hour of the day is known to be the most spectacular, especially in the desert with the rich contrast of colour and shape on the towering sand dunes of the Sossusvlei Area, on the vast desert plains and surrounding mountain ranges.

ELIM DUNE NATURE WALK
The guided nature walk starts at sunrise, departing from the Lodge and takes place on and around the spectacular Elim Dune Belt. Our knowledgeable guides focus on the small things often overlooked – nocturnal animal tracks, plant species and smaller wildlife.

SESRIEM CANYON EXCURSION
Explore the remarkable depths of Sesriem Canyon. Our experienced guides will share the history behind this magnificent natural canyon carved by the Tsauchab River.

ARCHERY
Archery is a fun but challenging activity that can be mastered fairly quickly. Our instructors will be on hand to teach you the age old art of the bow and arrow. This is a more relaxed activity where archers can compete against each other or have a shoot out to see who the master archer is.

Le Mirage Resort & Spa is a unique establishments in the Sossusvlei area. It is situated 21 km from the Sesriem gate to Sossusvlei. This makes it one of the lodges closest to the Sossusvlei and the ideal place to stay when you want to visit the highest dunes in the world!

Le Mirage resort and spa offers very spacious rooms with large beds, a minibar and coffee and tea facilities. The thick rock walls of the building will keep your room nice and cold and protect you from the harsh desert outside.

Tower Rooms: Sleeping under the stars
At the Oasis building, there are two open-air rooms on top of the towers. With the dry and clean air above the Namib Desert, you will see an incredible amount of stars. Watch the Milky Way while falling asleep!

The rooms are an add-on and can not be booked separately. Although rain is very rare, you will always have your main room as a back-up. The rooms have an open-air toilet and shower. As an add-on, you can also use the facilities in your main room.

Oasis ‘Castle’
The Oasis Rooms are located at the large ‘castle’ building with the oasis inside. The pool and spa are also located at the Oasis building. The open bathrooms have a walk-in shower and double sink.

The thick rock walls will keep your rooms nice and cold and protect you from the harsh desert outside. The private balconies are great for watching the sun-downers or just a coffee break.

Camelthorn Building
The building is named after the Camelthorn tree next to the building. It is the center building, where also the reception is located. The open bathrooms have a walk-in shower and a double sink. The toilet is separated from the bathroom.

Restaurant
The elegant restaurant serves international cuisine and wines. On most evenings, a 5-course dinner is served.

Each dinner, there is a special selected menu, with two different options for the main course. If you are a vegetarian, please notify us in advance. We will then prepare a seperate menu for you. On occasions, the 5-course dinner is replaced by a rich buffet.

Sossusvlei / Sesriem
At only 21km from Le Mirage Desert Lodge and Spa, you will find one of the main attractions of Namibia: Sossusvlei!

The entrance to Sossusvlei is in Sesriem, from the gate a 60km tarred road takes you in the National Park, along the way you will see some of the worlds highest dunes, even some petrified dunes, and the Sesriem Canyon. Drive on your own, or join a guided drive from the Lodge.

Dune 45
Only a few kilometers before the end of the road you will find Dune 45, one of the more accessible dunes in Sossuvlei.You are free to climb this dune, it is not an easy task, but the view from the top will make it worth your while. Don’t forget to wear closed shoes and take enough water before to commence this journey!

4 x 4 Part
Once you’ve arrived at the end of the tarred road, you can only continue with a good 4×4 car or use one of the shuttles available! If you feel adventures enough the 5km 4×4 route is real fun to drive yourself. Follow the tracks of the other cars, and this will take you to the Dead Vlei Parking.

From there you must walk about 1,1km over the dunes to reach Dead Vlei, again, take enough water and try to do this early morning or late afternoon as temperatures can reach some very high peaks around midday.

Dead Vlei
The Dead Vlei is probably one of the most magical places in the world. This pan used the be a lake that dried out hundreds of years ago.

Sesriem Canyon
The Tsauchab river carves the canyon in the local sedimentary rock. It is about a kilometer (0.6 miles) long and up to 30 meters (100 feet) deep. The canyon is located close to the Sesriem gate. This makes it a nice extra to visit after coming back from the Sossus trip.

Hot air ballooning over the Namib or Sossus Desert
One of the most wonderful experiences in the world is drifting in a hot air balloon over the majestic dunes of the Namib desert.

This adventure begins early in the morning, before sunrise, you are collected from Le Mirage and driven to the take-off area. Once the balloon is airborne, you drift silently over the dunes for about an hour.

The views of the Namib Desert are exceptional. On landing (wherever the wind has taken you) there is a champagne breakfast. After the champagne breakfast, you will be brought back to the lodge.

ABOUT SOSSUSVLEI 
Sossusvlei is a perfect specimen of Nambia’s unspoilt desert beauty. It is a salt and clay pan situated in the largest conservation area in Africa, the Namib-Naukluft National Park. This photogenic area is famous for its large, red sand dunes, which are some of the tallest sand dunes in the world and is one of Namibia’s most visited attractions.

The word Sossusvlei originates from two languages, Nama and Afrikaans. It literally translates to “dead-end” (from the Nama word “Sossus”) “marsh” (from the Afrikaans word “Vlei”).

Strictly, Sossusvlei refers specifically to the salt and clay pan at the end of the Tsauchab River’s course; however, often the entire area including Dune 45, Deadvlei and Hiddenvlei is referred to as Sossusvlei.

At Sossusvlei, the dunes meet preventing the Tsauchab River to flow any further, hence its name meaning “dead-end marsh”. Namibia is very dry and the Tsauchab River seldom flows as far as the pan.

However, following an exceptional rainy season in the Naukluft Mountains the pan is filled and appears as a lake, drawing visitors from all over the world to witness this remarkable site.

The characteristic red dunes of the Namib Desert have developed over many millions of years. The red sand that forms the dunes was deposited into the Atlantic Ocean from the Orange River.

The Benguela current then carried this sand northwards, to be deposited back onto the land by the ocean’s surf. From here the wind carried the red sand inland to form the dunes over time.

The sand dunes in the Namib are dynamic and change shape with the wind. The dunes around the Sossusvlei area are known as “star dunes” due to the wind shaping them from all directions. Enquire now to visit one of Namibia’s most beautiful, natural wonders.

FAUNA & FLORA
It is astounding how the fauna and flora of the Namib Desert have adapted to survive in their extreme environment, with temperatures breaching 40 degrees celius during the day and then plumeting to below freezing at night. This coupled with very little surface water means that a lot happens underneath the sand.

Like the flora in the area, the fauna have evolved incredible characteristics in order to survive in the extreme Namib Desert. The desert is home to countless microorganisms. Beneath the sand live beetles, spiders and reptiles, such as geckos.

All you need to do it look closely at the sand to see countless little tracks from the various interesting animals that have made this Desert their home. Many of these desert-dwelling creatures drink droplets of the occasional fog or lick minute droplets of water trickling down rocks and plants in order to survive. Others extract the moisture from the sand as they burrow through it.

Some of the larger mammals you will see around Sossusvlei are the ostrich, springbok and gemsbok, each well adapted to live in their dry surroundings. Larger predators include spotted hyena and the brown hyena. As the days cool down, you will be able to spot some of the smaller mammals in the cool night air, such as bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal, porcupine, Cape fox and aardwolf.

Camel thorn trees are dotted around the desert, usually along underground water systems. These classically Southern African trees have an impressive tap root system that reaches as far as 60 meters below the sand to access water.

Not only are they able to tap into the underground water systems to allow them to survive the incredibly hot and dry days, they are also adapted to survive frost. It would seem from their name and their usual habitat that they are named for their “camel-like” characteristics.

However this is not the case. The camel thorn tree is actually named after the afrikaans word for giraffe (“kameelperd”) as the giraffe is particually fond of the came thorn’s leaves and the only animal tall enough to reach them.

Another plant you are likely to see close to Sossusvlei are Nara Melons. These round, yellow fruit are approximately 15 centimeters in diameter and are endemic to the region. They also have an impressive root system that reaches down 40 meters in order to access water.

Nara Melons are a tasty treat for the animals in the area, with whom they share a symbiotic relationship – the animals obtain vital fluids and nutrients from the fruit and in turn they spread the seeds in their droppings, ensuring the survival of the plants.

The fascinating Welwitschia plant is found only in the Namib Desert. These plants are sometimes referred to as “living fossils” as the plants that one can see above the ground are thousands of years old. These plants survive by extracting moisture from the air.

ATTRACTIONS IN SOSSUSVLEI 
There are a number of wonderful attractions to be enjoyed around Sossusvlei in the largest conservation area in Namibia, the Namib-Nakluft National Park, which covers almost 50,000 km2.

The top attraction of the park and the second most popular attraction in Namibia, Sossusvlei is renowned for its majestic, warm red, star-shaped dunes contrasting against the stark white floors of the pans.

Other attractions in close proximity to Sossusvlei include Sesriem Canyon, Dune 45, Hiddenvlei, Big Daddy and Deadvlei. All of these attractions can be accessed from the road that takes you to Sossusvlei, and are all well worth a visit.

In a number of areas surrounding Sossuvlei look out for the petrified dunes. These are ancient dunes that are approximately 1 billion years old and have solidified into rock.

SESRIEM CANYON
Sesriem Canyon is located approximately 4.5km from the entrance gate of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. The Tsauchab River has shaped the Canyon over millions of years and it is one of the few places in the area that holds water all year round.

The early Afrikaans explorers in the region named the canyon after the fact that they had to use six (“ses”) leather straps (“riem”) tied together to create a rope long enough to lower buckets into the canyon below, in order to fetch water.

There are parking facilities so that visitors can park their vehicles and take a walk through the canyon. The canyon is narrow at places, however it is worth exploring due to the stunning rock formations that will captivate your attention.

DUNE 45
Dune 45 is named for its proximity to Sesrium Gate. It is situated 45km from the gate, along a paved road and is easily reached using a 2×4 vehicle. Its fascinating shape and accessibility makes it the most photographed dune in the world.

The dunes of the Namib Desert were created by sand carried by the wind from the coast of Namibia. The sand here is 5 million years old and is red in colour due to its iron oxide conten. As the lighting changes with the time of day, so does the appearance of the dunes’ characteristic colour, allowing for interesting photographs at any time.

The wind in the Sossusvlei area blows from all directions, which means that the type of the dunes hare are known as “star dunes”. This is because the winds cause the sand to form a star shape with multiple arms. Visitors are allowed to climb Dune 45, so be sure to visit early in the morning to watch the sunrise over the vlei from the top of the Dune.

The Dune is 85 meters high and the climb is well worth the effort as from the top you will be spoilt with the incredible panoramic view of Dune Valley. In the morning and evening light the floor of the pan has been described as a “moonscape” and is truly a sight to behold.

SOLITAIRE
A tiny settlement at the intersection of the C14 and C19, Solitare started as just a single cottage in 1948. Christoffel van Coller and his wife Elsie built the cottage and aptly named it Solitaire due to its remote location.

Over the years a few more facilities were added and today you will find a filling station, a small shop, accommodation and Big Moose’s Bakery. Solitaire is only 83km north of Sesriem Gate and, if only for a taste of Big Moose’s Apple Strudel, is well worth a visit!

Take a seat outside of the bakery, in the shade of the trees and feast on this exquisite treat, while ground squirrels and weavers fight over the crumbs that escape your fork.

HIDDENVLEI
Hiddenvlei is a 2km walk from the end of the 2×4 track and the route is marked with wooden polls. This vlei is the least visited of all the vleis letting those who make the journey enjoy some solitude in the beautiful desert surroundings.

During your walk to Hiddenvlei, look closely at the sand to examine the various tracks of the animals that occupy the area. You should be able to distinguish the tracks of Gemsbok and Springbok quite easily. However, on closer inspection you will be able to see the tracks of the smaller animals that generally live underneath the sand, for example the little Namib Gecko.

BIG DADDY
Big Daddy is the tallest dune in the Sossusvlei area. This magnificent dune is situated between Sossusvlei and Deadvlei and at 325 meters it dwarfs the other dunes. Should you want the ultimate bragging rights, take a lot of water and trek to the top of Big Daddy where you can look down onto Deadvlei.

At 325 meters, Big Daddy may be the highest dune in the Sossusvlei area, however it is not the highest in the Namib Desert. This honour is given to Dune 7, which has been measured at 388m. Dune 7 earned its name by being the 7th dune along the Tsauchab River.

DEADVLEI
Close to Sossusvlei, Deadvlei is a clay pan characterized by dark, dead camel thorn trees contrasted against the white pan floor. The pan was formed when the Tsauchab River flooded and the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow.

However, the climate changed and the sand dunes encroached on the pan, blocking the river from reaching the area. The trees are estimated to be approximately 900 years old, however they have not decomposed due to the dry climate.

Deadvlei is a paradise for photographers as the contrast between the pitch-black trees and bleached-white pans, and the rusty-red dunes and deep blue sky make for incredible images. Deadvlei is at least 1km walk from the parking lot so be sure to take drinking water with you.

The Dunes Lodge is perched on top of a dune plateau, overlooking panoramic vistas in all directions and capturing the beauty of the desert in a most memorable way.

The building style is a combination of wooden structures and canvas blinds, opening up to the desert beyond. The lodge reflects the ambience of a tented camp, but provides the comfort and protection of a permanent building.

Each of the nine spacious chalets with en-suite bathrooms has a private verandah, which connects you to vast stretches of untouched sand. Sleeping with your canvas blinds open is just like sleeping under the stars.

The main complex consists of two lounges, a number of sundowner decks, a fireplace, a tea deck, a library, the wine cellar and two dining rooms.

The lodge also has a swimming pool, which is suspended above the sand. All communal areas of the lodge open out onto decks with superb views.

Scenic Drives
Wolwedans provides the perfect base from which to explore vast stretches of undisturbed nature. Our personal and informative scenic drives in open Land rovers reveal the wonders of the wilderness.

You will learn about small and large desert dwellers and their quest for survival in this harsh and unforgiving environment, and you’ll discover a diverse flora, ranging from resilient beauty to hardened survivor – not to mention NamibRand’s fascinating geology.

Sundowner drives are approximately 1-2 hours long, traveling about 10 km into the dunes, where cold drinks will be served while you enjoy the magnificent desert sunset. The return drive to the camp/lodge takes place in the dark, where our desert chefs have prepared a sumptuous four-course dinner for you. You should aim to experience one sunset in the dunes and one at the lodge/camp.

Morning or afternoon drives cover a distance of about 40-50 km and take 3-4 hours. Afternoon scenic drives are often combined with sundowners in the dunes.

A day drive is a truly memorable excursion. Covering a distance of about 120 km it offers the highest degree of diversity in landscape, as well as a better understanding of the dimensions of the NamibRand Nature Reserve. A delicious picnic lunch is served in the middle of nowhere! The day drive departs after breakfast and returns approximately one hour before sunset.

We aspire to make your stay at Wolwedans as personal and individual as possible. However there are certain constraints imposed by the NamibRand Nature Reserve, which has ecological conservancy regulations. Thus the number of vehicles on the reserve is restricted – which does not always allow us to offer exclusive drives. We will do our utmost to accommodate your wishes, but we kindly ask for your understanding if we are unable to.

WALKING SAFARIS

TokTokkie Trails is a separate concession on the reserve and offers guided desert walking trails in the southeast of the NamibRand Nature Reserve. The trail is two nights long and can easily be integrated into a visit to Wolwedans (subsequently becoming a four-night stay).

The pace of the trail is leisurely and designed for guests from 10 to 70 years of age. Daily distances do not exceed 10 kilometers to ensure close-up viewing of the desert’s intriguing flora and micro-fauna. Groups (which could also be exclusive) are limited to 8 persons to ensure personal attention.

Follow in the footsteps of the Bushmen (San), who have been traversing the expansive sand and gravel plains for centuries. This down to earth experience will reveal the desert’s true magnitude to you, a dramatic interplay of golden grass Savannah, red sand dunes and majestic mountain ranges.

Enjoy your picnic lunch in the shade of ancient camel-thorn trees that line the dry riverbeds. Two course dinners and drinks are served at camp after sunset. Hot bucket-showers and comfortable camp beds under the starry skies will provide comfortable relief after a day’s walk.

This close to nature experience requires a certain degree of physical fitness. The older generation, however, is not excluded – many a seasoned nature lover has thoroughly enjoyed the trail.

BUSHMAN WALKS

Khoisan men, from the south of Namibia lead the bushman walk through the dunes and plains surrounding the camps and lodges. Guests are led through areas surrounding the sites and focus primarily on micro-fauna and flora. Activities from the previous night, like tracks and trails are sought out and small desert creatures are located, identified and explained. The bushman walk is included in your stay at Wolwedans and takes place in the morning or the afternoon.

Hot Air Ballooning

A special attraction at NamibRand Nature Reserve is hot-air ballooning. This seasonal activity allows you to float over the dune belts and never-ending plains of the Namib Desert; providing unforgettable and breathtaking 360-degree vistas.

From the best viewpoint imaginable, you admire the stark beauty of the Namib for about an hour, before celebrating this once in a lifetime experience with a champagne breakfast at the landing spot.

Scenic Flights
