Located in one of the Peak District’s most picturesque villages, the blissfully luxurious Cavendish Hotel at Baslow is quite possibly the perfect countryside escape.  From fine dining in our three AA Rosette Gallery restaurant to relaxing in one of our 28 stylish, sumptuous bedrooms; the Cavendish has it all.

Of course, the magnificent surrounding countryside will demand your attention, too. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a family get-together, or a wedding venue that goes beyond your wildest dreams—you’ll find it here.

1700s – There has been an Inn here for so long that it is uncertain when it was built. Originally the famous Peacock Inn, it was the property of the Duke of Rutland and served the turnpike between industrial Chesterfield and the spa town of Buxton.

1830 – The Cavendish Hotel became the property of the Duke of Devonshire around 1830, and in the early 1970’s was rebuilt as the Cavendish by Chatsworth Estate. When the original character of the property was preserved, the Duchess of Devonshire selected the decor and furnishings, some of which came from Chatsworth House itself.

1975 – 2008 – The Cavendish operated between 1975 and 2008 under the proprietorship of Eric Marsh. This period represented a time of restoration and expansion, with the addition of the 10 room Mitford Wing in 1985. The Cavendish became renowned for its extensive collection of original artwork, antiques, charming furnishings and decor , with many pieces sourced from Chatsworth House.

2008 – In September of 2008, Eric’s lease for the tenancy of the Cavendish came to an end. However, Eric with three other colleagues including Managing Director Philip Joseph successfully negotiated a Management Contract (Peak Leisure Management Ltd) to operate the Cavendish on behalf of the owners, Chatsworth Settlement Trustees.

2018 – sees the conversion of the former Coach House providing an addition four guest bedrooms. The ten year managment contract comes to an end and The Cavendish Hotel joins the wider Devonshire Hotels Group alongside The Devonshire Arms at Beeley and Pilsley, The Devonshire Fell at Burnsall in North Yorkshire and The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa on the Bolton Abbey Estate. Philip Joseph remains as Manager, a position he has held since 2001.

THE DUKE & THE DUCHESS

The Duke and Duchess manage the Bolton Abbey and Chatsworth estates for the benefit of our guests and the people that live and work in and around the thousands of acres of land that surrounds our hotels, inns and Boltholes in the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District.

Both the Duke and Duchess have a hand in creating each and every one of our properties. CHATSWORTH HOUSE & GARDEN
The house is renowned for the quality of its art, landscape and hospitality, and it has evolved through the centuries to reflect the tastes, passions and interests of succeeding generations.

Today Chatsworth contains works of art that span 4000 years, from ancient Roman and Egyptian sculpture, and masterpieces by Rembrandt, Reynolds and Veronese, to work by outstanding modern artists, including Lucian Freud, Edmund de Waal and David Nash. There are over 30 rooms to explore, from the magnificent Painted Hall, regal State Rooms, restored Sketch Galleries and beautiful Sculpture Gallery.

Having evolved over more than 450 years, the 105 acre Chatsworth garden continues to change today. There is plenty to discover at every turn, including permanent sculptures to be found. The garden is famous for its rich history, historic and modern waterworks and sculptures, the Victorian rock garden and the maze.

The working farmyard and adventure playground provides a fun and educational day out for children of all ages – with animal handling, milking demonstrations and daily activities, plus a woodland adventure playground with slides, trampolines and more. So if your young farmers like to meet animals, make new friends, try new things, and learn and play all day, they’re going to love our farmyard.

The 1000 acre park on the banks of the river Derwent was chiefly designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown in the 1760s. Today the park contains historic and modern architecture and art including James Paine’s bridges and mill, Queen Mary’s Bower and horse jumps from the Chatsworth International Horse Trials. Stand Wood provides an impressive backdrop for the house, and contains an interesting diversity of trees and wildlife.

BOLSOVER CASTLE

BUXTON
Buxton lies just outside the National Park boundaries, but is the most important town for most of the western and central Peak. The town is situated in a natural bowl on the boundary between the gritstone and limestone areas and the River Wye has had to carve a gorge through the limestone to find an exit to the South East. At 300m above sea level the town is the highest town of its size in England.

The site has been occupied continuously since at least Roman times, when a fort and settlement called Aquae Arnemetiae was established here, probably on the high ground between the market place and the bluff which overlooks the river by the police station. As well as its strategic situation, the Romans were attracted to the site by the warm springs which emerge near the River Wye with a constant temperature of 28 degrees Celsius.

They built baths here and for the following centuries these springs have been a major source of importance and income for Buxton. The spring at St Ann’s well was probably a place of pilgrimage as early as the Middle Ages, but certainly by Tudor times it was fairly well established as a spa and in Elizabeth I’s time it was visited for this purpose by The Earl of Leicester, Lord Burghley and no less than Mary Queen of Scots, who was being held captive by the Earl of Shrewsbury and his wife Bess of Hardwick at nearby Chatsworth.

The town has a full range of shops, centred around a shopping arcade built over the culverted River Wye, just off Spring Gardens. There is a market every Tuesday and Saturday. The town’s tourist information centre is in the Pavilion Gardens building, behind the Opera House.

Other things to see in Buxton include the Museum and Poole’s Cavern and Grin Low Country Park. Buxton has a well-dressing and carnival which starts on the second Sunday in July. The annual Festival is in mid-late July. The Festival also sports and Edinburgh-like Fringe Festival and continues to grow in popularity.
