A Treasured Past
Travelers retreat to the Tides Inn to enjoy timeless traditions by sea and by land. American made and family built, the Tides Inn has been a staple in the Northern Neck area since 1947. It was a place of play. A place for families.

A place to come together and escape the hustle and bustle of the city living. Many guests have found a home away from home at the Tides Inn and return each year to relish in a simpler way of life. Whether you come to the Tides Inn to play or to pause, you will be welcomed like family.

The Story of Two Amateurs
The story of the Tides Inn is one of imagination, vision and luck. In 1945, E.A. Stephens and his wife Ann (fondly remembered as Big Steve and Miss Ann) purchased a 25-acre farm overlooking Carter’s Creek for $5,000.

They purchased the farm, then known as the Ashburn Farm, simply because they “thought it was an attractive piece of property.” The farm was overgrown with honeysuckle, briars and vines making it impossible for them to truly see what they bought.

All they knew was the land was high with great water views. As they began to clear the fields, their enthusiasm for the property increased. When someone first suggested they should build a hotel on the land, they laughed at the idea.

They were not experienced hoteliers after all. It was in the fall of 1946 when the Stephens made a major decision.

They would take a leap of faith and create an Inn to be “the finest thing that could be developed and still keep the rural atmosphere.” One year and three months later, the Tides Inn opened its doors on July 15, 1947.

Chesapeake Bay Marina
The Tides Inn Chesapeake Bay Marina provides the beauty and tranquility of a secluded harbor. Located on Carters Creek, 11 nautical miles from Windmill Point, the floating dock marina accommodates up to 24 vessels ranging from small weekend cruisers to 150-foot yachts.

Featuring electricity, water, cable TV and pump-out services, our exceptional amenities and activities are offered to all who chose to spend the night docked at the Tides Inn Marina.

Tides Inn Ecological Restoration
We invite you to join us in our mission to protect, support and sustainably harvest the organisms that call this region home.

Oyster Sanctuary
Oysters are especially critical to this region because of their extensive presence in dining and their powerful impact on water cleanliness. Turning Carter’s Creek into an oyster sanctuary is the best way we can protect and ensure the proliferation of oysters in this area.

These oysters will never be harvested and upon reaching maturity, they will have their spawn flushed from the creek to repopulate working reefs in the Rappahannock River.

Guest Experiences
Throughout the year, the Tides Inn will be hosting a variety of activities so guests can get involved with the preservation of the reefs. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about and assist with the recycling and distribution of shells to reefs.

We will also host Oyster Academy sessions where we can educate guests about the life of the oyster and their important role in creating a sustainably clean bay.

Ellery Kellum Rock
The Tides Inn is also thrilled to announce the opening of Ellery Kellum Rock – Carter’s Creek’s newest Oyster Sanctuary.

A dedication ceremony for the reef was held on June 15th, 2017; the reef was named in honor of Ellery Kellum, the founder of Kellum Seafood; which donated the reef lease to the Friends of Rappahannock.

Currently, there are about 1,500 bushels of shells on the reef and experts expect that number to continue to grow. The Ellery Kellum Rock oysters will not be harvested, since they are essential in the improvement of local water quality and nearby reef growth.
