LOCATION
Torel Avantgarde´s prime location in the center of Porto between Cristal Palace and Clerigos Tower means you are only a few steps away from the main attractions and the hustle and bustle of the city. Porto´s hip and trendy art district around Rua Miguel Bombarda with its many galleries is just around the corner.
Located on Rua da Restauraçao just beside the Casa do Vinho Verde, Torel Avantgarde offers stunning views over the River Douro from its pool and terraces. Some of the most important sights are in short walking distance: Livraria Lello is five minutes walk away, Cais da Ribeira 15 minutes, and the Casa da Musica 20 minutes.
HISTORY
Torel Avantgarde is the result of the story of three people – João, Barbara and Ingrid – who decided to change their lives and whose paths intersected in Lisbon.
JOÃO
In 2013, the Portuguese-born Joao Pedro Tavares, who had left a career of over 20 years in banking, decided to start a new project.
He rented a beautiful, but abandoned villa on top of the Sant´ana hill in the heart of Lisbon and transformed it into a bed and breakfast. On 23 December 2013, Torel Palace opened its doors, offering a delightful and welcoming place with eleven unique rooms.
BARBARA
In early 2014, Barbara Ott from Austria visited Torel Palace as a guest, and was smitten by the charming palace – and by Lisbon. After a few months of reflection, she decided to leave Austria, settle in Portugal – and become a partner in Torel Palace.
Together, Joao and Barbara renovated the second building next door, which in the spring of 2015 became part of Torel Palace, expanding the boutique hotel to 28 rooms.
INGRID
In the autumn of the same year another Austrian, Ingrid Koeck, who was looking to establish a Bed & Breakfast in Portugal, walked into the bar of Torel Palace, where she met Barbara.
It was only a matter of time before she became the third partner in what has become a slowly but steadily growing hospitality business marked by a passion for people, dedication to personal service, and a joy of living.
In 2016, the three partners decided to expand Torel Palace: with Torel Cliff Surf & Golf, a boutique Bed&Breakfast in Praia D´El Rey/Óbidos, and with Torel Avantgarde, the first small five-star boutique hotel in Porto.
All three establishments – the Torel Boutiques – encompass the spirit of offering comfortable and refined homes, providing outstanding service, and hosting our guests in a very personal way.
ROOMS
All of our rooms in Torel Avantgarde are named after a famous Avantgarde artist from the fields of art, design, literature, architecture, science etc: Ranging from Francis Bacon, Charles & Ray Eames, Amadeu Souza-Cardoso to Alberto Giacometti.
The design and decoration of each room reflects the personality and specific vision of the artist. We have 27 rooms, and 20 suites. Our rooms and suites in the ‘Superior’ categories feature a balcony. Rooms and suites in the ‘Deluxe’ categories as well as the Royal Suite feature a balcony and view to the river.
BAR AND RESTAURANT
Occupying a privileged location in the city of Porto, our Digby restaurant is located in the hotel Torel Avantgarde where you can find here will find a breathtaking view over the Douro River and the beautiful city of Vila Nova de Gaia.
Meat is the protagonist and lays the foundations for tasting a kitchen thought to detail. A concept of Portuguese soul, where Chef Hugo Portela invites you to enjoy the dishes without haste, at the right time.
Time is the key in Tenro by Digby – for both: Time to prepare, and time to enjoy. And at Digby, we give you time so you can enjoy the best meat in Portugal.
Until it reaches the table, the meat go through a preparation process for up to 7 days in brine, with a salt concentration of 3% to 7%, a marinade that uses different products and, in the end, the cooking that takes between 6 and 10 hours.
In a perfect triad between protein, garnish and sauce, our menu is based on traditional Portuguese cuisine that values the quality and transparency of the flavors on the palate that travel to their origins.

CHEF HUGO PORTELA
Fascinated by a project with enormous potential, in the process of transformation and growth, he embraces this new challenge as Chef de Cuisine with a view to growth sustained by experience, with solidity and greater visibility and creative freedom.
A young and dynamic work environment with wide horizons, inserted in one of the best hotels in the city of Porto, Digby Restaurant and Bar in Torel Avantgarde is a mixture of traditional and avantgarde, never forgetting the city and the country that welcomes and guides our senses.
SIR DIGBY
Digby is named after Sir Kenelm Digby (July 11, 1603 – June 11, 1665), an English courtier and diplomat, who is credited as the inventor of the modern wine bottle. Sir Digby manufactured wine bottles which were globular in shape with a high, tapered neck, a collar, and a punt.
The wine bottles produced through his technique were stronger and more stable than others. In 1662, the British Parliament recognised his claim to the invention of the wine bottle. Sir Digby was known for his eccentric and versatile character, as a politician, a philosopher, an intellectual, and a traveller.

PHYTOMER
In Calla Wellness & Spa, we use the brand Phytomer for all our facial beauty treatments as well as a number of body treatments. For nearly 50 years Phytomer has been transforming the sea into skin care to effectively reveal women and men`s beauty – a natural authentic, vibrant beauty.
Founded in St. Malo, Bretagne in 1972 by Jean Gedouin, today already the third generation of the family is involved to promote ecofriendly cosmetics that use locally sourced ingredients.
Their unique laboratory is entirely dedicated to marine bio-technologies such as alges, plankton, sea water. Phytomer is free of parabenes, alcohol and silicones to provide you the most natural and healthy skin care experience.

MEETINGS AND EVENTS
Torel Avantgarde is the ideal venue for the celebration of intimate events up to 40 people and special celebrations such as birthday dinners. If you wish to hold a company meeting, our “Sala Jorge Vale” has the perfect atmosphere for small events up to 30 people with total comfort, technical conditions and natural light.
We also have a terrace with panoramic views of the Douro – perfect for an afternoon cocktail.
