THE HISTORY
Home to many rockers and rollers who recorded seminal records just around the corner, The Portobello Hotel has played host to many famous faces over the years. From the rockstars of the swinging 60s to Brit Pop legends Blur in the 90s, the bright and vibrant atmosphere of our hotel drew many influential musicians to this corner of West London.

Legend has it that Johnny Depp and Kate Moss once bathed in Champagne in the decadent Room 16. Other musicians and celebrities to walk through the doors include Alice Cooper and Robbie Williams (who tried to buy our famed circular bed from Room 16). Although our books aren’t filled with VIPs as often as they once were, we still have celebrity guests come to stay.

We pride ourselves in our laid-back approach to luxury, so we ask that any guests who happen to see a famous face relaxing in the Sitting Room with a breakfast or a drink to please allow them to simply enjoy their stay.

THE DESIGN
The Portobello Hotel embodies the Bohemian spirit of the Portobello Road Market and the eclectic soul of Notting Hill and London of the swinging 60s. We are one of the most famous hotels in the capital – partly because we were the first boutique hotel in London, but also because our hotel has been home to rockers and rollers who recorded some of the most iconic albums in music history in the recording studios around the corner. Below our owners, Peter & Jessica Frankopan, share their thoughts on the design of the Portobello Hotel.

MUSIC, FASHION & MOVIE
We knew the owners for years before we took it on. We’d told them for ages how Portobello was not just our favourite hotel in London, but the perfect sibling to our other hotels. The Portobello Hotel oozes with music, fashion, and film history.

We love that guests who stayed decades ago are still coming – and that those who come for the first time now make it their home away from home. And we love that you can see two A list stars sitting on nearby tables at breakfast and no one bats an eyelid. We love creating an atmosphere where everyone can relax.

BLENDING THE PAST WITH THE PRESENT
We have 21 rooms in the heart of Notting Hill, five minutes from Portobello Market, and a stone’s throw from Paul Smith, Agent Provocateur, and the boutiques of Westbourne Grove. We are firm believers in respecting the past and blending it with the present day.

So over the last five years, we’ve been slowly working our way through the hotel, upgrading the rooms and making the bathrooms bigger and better. But not for one minute did we want to make ‘our mark’ on the Portobello: our role is to tweak and make better without anyone noticing. That’s the secret of doing things the right way.

ONE OF A KIND PIECES
It has been such fun continuing this legacy of such a famous place. We have scoured local markets and antique shops for one-of-a-kind pieces and little nic nacs and details that bring the hotel’s identity to life, while being faithful to its past.

We know it’s important to our guests to be able to stroll out the front door and walk to places that they are going to like. We are in a perfect location for that – 30 minutes from the City, 20 mins from the shops in Knightsbridge and 5 mins from Portobello market.

Each of our 21 bedrooms is individually designed and reflects the eclectic spirit, eccentric charm, and luxury of Notting Hill. Here at Portobello we believe in the power of switching off and have removed many of the tv’s from our bedrooms, allowing you some true downtime. OUTSTANDING ROOMS
Our most spectacular spaces – each Outstanding room tells its own story, embodying the Bohemian spirit of the Portobello Road Market. Located on the lower, ground and first floors, offering a beautiful view of the garden or street and come with separate showers and gorgeous bathtubs.

They all benefit from a generous living area and signature beds. One of them features a canopy bed, the second a royal four poster bed, the third complete with a unique circular bed, and the fourth has a beautiful private patio with a hidden seating area – all with plenty of space to unwind and relax in complete luxury.

GREAT ROOMS
Full of charm and boho design, with plenty of character and space to enjoy – these stunning bedrooms have fabulous views of the streets and gardens of Notting Hill.

Two of these rooms are located on the first floor with high ceilings and gorgeous French doors framing your bedroom, and the third stunning room is on the third floor with a bathtub and overhead shower. Their signature style features furnishings and fabrics sourced from the Portobello Road market, beautifully blending the past and the present.

BETTER ROOMS
The perfect rooftop-gazing nest, with most located on the top floor in the eaves of Portobello – combining eclectic style with a touch of intimacy, creating a vibrant and luxurious stay.

Our better rooms all have fantastic views, overlooking the gardens or streets of Notting Hill. All nestled under a pitched roof with showers, and two hosting Victorian bathtubs – perfect for unwinding after a day exploring the city.

THE BREAKFAST
Breakfast is served in our Sitting Room and includes a selection of fresh fruit juice, tea, coffee, cereal, pastries, yoghurt, meats, cheeses, toast, fresh fruit or a cooked breakfast. This can be enjoyed downstairs or in the privacy of your own room.

HONESTY BAR
The Sitting Room becomes a place to relax with a drink and enjoy the views of the private gardens. With a selection of spirits and liquors from local brewers available in our Honesty Bar, crystal cut glasses, and antique market finds, it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind.

Our menus reflect the best produce and culinary talent Cornwall has to offer. We serve our dinner menu in both the restaurant & the conservatory, but we can also offer an Al a Carte menu at lunch & dinner.

AFTERNOON TEA
An afternoon tea is a slow affair, that cultivates quality time with those you care about. It’s a rejuvenating interlude during hot summers and a cosy moment in the chill mid-winter. It’s time well spent. Afternoon teas have evolved since 1840 when Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, decided that afternoons were shamefully foodless.

At Talland Bay tuck into a moreish selection of fresh homemade cakes, sandwiches, and scones—accompanied by tea, coffee, or perhaps a crisp glass of bubbly or a G&T. There’s nothing wrong with making merry in the afternoon. You’re on holiday after all.

TALLAND BAY GIN
Bittersweet and totally refreshing. Nothing beats a G&T on warm, golden evenings. Particularly if you can sip it whilst gazing out to sea.

We’re so enamoured with gin we’ve created our own, in partnership with the Colwith Farm Distillery. The first ‘plough to bottle’ distillery in Cornwall. Our idea was to distil a pure spirit, true to its roots, yet firmly of the Cornish farmlands and coast.

Our gin is fragrant with a warm finish. Think coriander, cinnamon, and angelica. In the soft hue of a gently approaching twilight, with the salt breeze in your hair and the open coast, it is a fitting accompaniment.

WEDDINGS IN CORNWALL
Our hotel is an elegant space to host your wedding. We have a dining area with antique wood panelling leading out to a patio, and a flourishing garden—presenting the best sea view in the West Country.

To top this off our double AA Rosette wedding food is utterly delicious, and we stock a range of gins, whiskies, wines, ciders, and craft beers. An atmospheric wedding of plenty.

It’s your special day and understandably you might not want to share it (except with your guests of course). You can book out the entirety of our hotel from 12pm on your wedding day to 11am the following morning.

Receive the undivided attention of our team and a private party above the waves like no other. You’ll also have a complimentary honeymoon suite for the night and our rooms will be offered at a special reduced rate.

LOST GARDENS OF HELIGAN 
A true lost world brought back to life by visionary horticulturalists. The Gardens of the Heligan Estate were once just briars and creepers. What lay beneath was unknown and abandoned.

In 1990 they were discovered once more, and after the biggest garden renovation project in Europe, some mysterious and magical gardens were resurrected. A wonderful place to lose yourself for a few hours.

EDEN PROJECT 
The Eden Project is a five-time winner of the British Travel Awards, Best Leisure Attraction accolade. It’s easy to see why. There’s nothing else like it; huge biomes that simulate the climates of our planet, with more than 1000 different plant species between them. The botanical skill involved is mind-blowing and their dedication to environmental issues and education is second to none.

MINACK THEATRE
Alongside the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, The Minack is the most iconic theatre in our country. A magnificent amphitheatre, hewn from the rock high above Porthcurno beach. On a summer’s evening, with the vast Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop, it’s a singular experience watching a production here.

POLPERRO
On the other side of our headland is one of the most quintessential fishing villages in the county. It’s the village you imagine when you imagine Cornwall, with fishing boats in the harbour and ancient cottages climbing up the hillside. Polperro is a beautiful place, worth taking some time over.

The moment you step inside The Priory, we want you to relax, unwind and enjoy yourself. Situated in the market town of Wareham, this is a country hotel with its own special charm.

Set in exquisite, well cared for gardens that are worth a day out in their own right, The Priory retains its heritage as a grand private house and once monastery with unique, one off antiques and luxury interiors, making it one of most special boutique hotels in Dorset.

Sought after by those wishing to enjoy the comforts and ambience of a quintessential Grade II listed English country house, each of the hotel’s 17 guest rooms are individually furnished to a high standard, offering their own unique character and charm. Some with views and glimpses of the River Frome and Purbeck Hills, others overlook the lovely gardens or small yet sweet inner courtyard.

Accommodation is available both in the Main House and Boat House, which is located directly on the riverbank. Due to the age, listing, nature, and layout of the property, please kindly note that we do not have any family rooms or interconnecting rooms.

Therefore, children over the age of 14 (unless by special arrangement) are very welcome at The Priory. Unfortunately, we do not accept dogs (only guide dogs by special arrangement).

THE MAIN HOUSE
In the main house guest rooms fall into five categories; Small Courtyard Double, Classic Double, Deluxe Double, Superior Double/Twin, and Mini Suite. As the hotel does not have a lift, access to all guest rooms is via the stairs; rooms overlooking the pretty inner courtyard can also be accessed externally on a level walk from the gravel drive.

THE PURBECK SUITE
A spacious, elegant dual aspect mini suite with sumptuous super-­king bed or linked twin mattress on the 1st floor with garden and river views. Large bathroom with feature roll top copper bath and separate walk­-in shower.

KIMMERIDGE COURTYARD DOUBLE
They say the best things often come in small packages and this is certainly the case for this cosy courtyard double bedroom with double bed on the ground floor which looks out onto our sweet courtyard entrance filled with flowers and shrubs. Walk in shower with combined drencher and riser.

THE BOAT HOUSE
Accommodation is available both in the Main House and Boat House, which is located directly on the riverbank. Due to the age and nature of the property, please kindly note that we do not have any family rooms, interconnecting rooms, or rooms suitable for the disabled. We welcome children over the age of 14 years old (unless by special arrangement).

SWAN BOAT HOUSE SUITE
Situated on the ground floor this is a two-room suite; one room being a separate lounge with French doors opening onto to a riverside veranda and the other being a bedroom with sumptuous super-king bed (or twin divans) and en-suite bathroom.

MALLARD SUITE
A feature room with high vaulted beamed ceiling and striking contemporary open framed 4-poster bed. Overlooking the pretty Boathouse gardens with private balcony and luxury bathroom with whirlpool bath and separate walk-in shower cubicle.

DINING
Head Chef Stephan Guinebault’s own personal ethos lies at the heart of all that he does. When Stephan joined The Priory in 2006, he brought with him a wealth of knowledge and experience, which all stemmed from growing up on his grandmother’s (grand-maman) farm in the Loire Valley, and her cooking! Motivated by his love of (her) food, he first started work as an apprentice chef whilst simultaneously attending catering college.

He progressed through both ‘Michelin’ and ‘Relais & Chateaux’ establishments in France, gaining invaluable ‘classical’ training and an understanding of regional dishes and techniques. Today, Stephan’s passion for food is as evident as ever.

He thrives on obtaining quality produce, with a guaranteed provenance, using fine, locally sourced, ‘seasonal’ produce, whenever possible. He is inspired by both European and International cuisine, along with traditional French and English dishes, which all translate perfectly to the plates of our discerning customers.

Our new restaurant brings the outside in, come rain or shine you will dine with views over our lawn and down to the river. With ceiling-height windows that open fully, green oak beams, and luxury Mulberry Home interiors, we hope to bring you one of the best dining experiences in the whole of Dorset.

MORNING COFFEE
Enjoy a most welcome mid-morning coffee break in the comfort of The Drawing Room; or The River Terrace on fine days. We offer a blend of freshly brewed classic coffee and the Italian favourites Cappuccino, Latte and Espresso, all are served with a delicious choice of Danish pastries, shortbread biscuits or cake.

AFTERNOON TEA
Enjoy the tradition of Afternoon Tea at The Priory, served in the relaxed comfort of either The John Turner Restaurant or on The River Terrace in the summertime.

Our Afternoon Tea Menu is simply too tempting to resist from a pot of tea for two with homemade shortbread biscuits to a ‘Priory Ritzy Tea’ which can be taken with a glass of English Sparkling Wine if desired. Children aged 8 years and over are very welcome (exceptions are for private dining bookings in the John Turner Restaurant).

DINNER
Enjoy an aperitif in The Drawing Room, The Cloisters Bar or, on warm summer evenings, The River Terrace, whilst you look over the menu and wine list. DURDLE DOOR
Situated on the dramatic World Heritage Jurassic Coast, with direct access to the South West Coast Path, Durdle Door is a natural limestone arch which sits alongside another geological masterpiece, Lulworth Cove. Due to the contrasting hardnesses of the rocks, together with the local patterns of faults and folds, the arch has formed where bands of rock run parallel to the shoreline.

OLD HARRY
The Old Harry Rocks are three chalk formations, including a stack and a stump, located at Handfast Point. They mark the (easterly) start of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The chalk of Old Harry Rocks used to be part of a long stretch of chalk between Purbeck and the Isle of Wight, but remained as a headland after large parts of this seam were eroded away.

CORFE CASTLE
The village of Corfe Castle, standing at the gateway to the Isle of Purbeck, is dominated by the dramatic ruined castle, a visitor’s delight at any time of year. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates back to the 11th century and stands on a natural hill guarding the principal route through the Purbeck Hills.

ARNE PATH
Arne is the RSPB’s flagship heathland. There is a lot to see at any time of year, with beautiful views across Poole Harbour and the Purbeck Hills. A bridleway through the site takes you past the RSPB’s Arne farm, through oak woodland, heathland and down onto the small beach at the edge of Poole Harbour.

KIMMERIDGE BAY 
Kimmeridge Bay lies within the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve and boasts the best rock pooling and safest snorkelling site in Dorset. The rocks at Kimmeridge Bay were once the floor of a deep, tropical sea rich in pre-historic life. They formed in the Jurassic period, 155 million years ago. Walk up to Clavell Tower for spectacular views over the bay..

BROWNSEA ISLAND
Brownsea Island, the birthplace of Guiding and Scouting, is the largest of the islands in Poole Harbour. The first records of inhabitants occurred in the 9th century, when a small chapel and hermitage were built by monks.Today, areas of woodland and heath, with a wide variety of wildlife, are open to the public.

SWANAGE BEACH
The beautiful curve of Swange Bay is home to Swanage beach, a gently sloping golden sand beach which is sheltered and generally calm.

The southern half of this beach frontage includes Swanage Pier, and the small town of Swanage; a popular recreational area for beach users, diving, fishing and sailing. Moving north beyond the groynes the coast is undeveloped and undefended, characterised by actively eroding vegetated chalk sea cliffs.

WAREHAM
The small town of Wareham lies on the River Frome with a history dating back nearly 2000 years. It flourished in Saxon times as a strategic stronghold for King Alfred the Great. Today, its localise quayside, facing towpath, and open countryside, together with the surrounding Saxon wall mounds, it still offers visitors a feel of the past.

STAIRHOLE
Stair Hole lies just to the west of Lulworth Cove and is one of the best places to really understand how erosion is shaping the coast. Just behind the eroding Portland Stone, Stair Hole is considered an embryonic cove, and will reveal how Lulworth Cove probably looked 10,000 years ago; eventually, it will join up with Lulworth Cove. By standing on the viewpoint, classic stages of erosion can easily be seen including; caves, blow-holes, arches, stacks and stumps.

THE HISTORY
The second oldest property in the Alexander Hotel Collection, Langshott Manor’s history dates back to 1580. Our Moat Mews is home to bedrooms and suites named after Henry VIII and his wives are an homage to the incredible history of this country manor house.

Home to many great families over the last 500 years, Langshott Manor played host to Richard Evelyn (who is the brother of the famous diarist, John Evelyn) and his wife during the reign of King Charles II. Our Grade II listed hotel still holds many of its original features including exposed beams, working fireplaces and grand windows.

Fast forward to the 20th century when Langshott Manor was the home of Lord Montague of Brandon. Following Montague, Major Jennings moved in and provided shelter for many evacuees during World War II.

After the war, right up until the 1980s, the manor house laid empty until 1986 when the Noble family joined the Langshott story. Swept away by the charm, history and character that Langshott Manor is known for today, they set about restoring some of the older features of the house and tending to the gardens.

We join this story in October 1997. Langshott became the second property in the AHC family. We have spent the last 20 years lovingly restoring it to its former glory. We’ve built a new restaurant as well as a new wing of bedrooms to create the captivating, historic property you see today.

THE HENRY VIII SUITE
The Henry VIII Suite, named of course after the most infamous Henry in history, is located in the Moat Mews. Boasting an ornate four-poster bed, decorative fireplace and a private over-water deck along with a gorgeous free standing tub, it really does have a very special character indeed. Decorated in rich plum and wine tones with lots of velvet and walnut throughout, it has a classic charm alongside modern luxuries.

THE LEEDS SUITE
Named after Leeds Castle, The Leeds Suite is situated on the first floor of the Main House and enjoys views across the gardens. The Leeds Suite is known for not one, but two four posters – both a four-poster bed & a unique four-poster bath.

It is decorated in a luxurious style, with heavy velvet drapes (on both the bed & bath!), richly coloured floral wallpaper and highly polished walnut furniture. Both the main bedroom & bathroom are reached via the reception area of the Suite, which lends a sense of space and grandeur to the room.

The wild botanic sister garden to Kew Garden located on the High Weald of West Sussex has over 500 acres of beautiful ornamental gardens, woodlands and a nature reserve. Wakehurst is also home to the Millennium Seed Bank, the largest wild seed conservation project in the world. Entry is free for National Trust and Kew Garden members.

TULLEY’S FARM
Located just up the road from Alexander House and a 15 minute drive from Langshott Manor, the famous Tulley’s Farm offers an experience you’ll never forget. With seasonal activities from escape rooms, Shocktober Fest, their tea room and their Maize Maze to enjoy.

BRITISH WILDLIFE CENTRE
Boasting the finest collection of native wildlife, including over 40 different species, The British Wildlife Centre is the perfect escape for guests looking to get back to nature. All the animals live in settings that reflect their natural environment.

Much of the area is outdoors, although there are undercover areas such as the Barn, the Hedgerow, the Nocturnal House and our observation Badger Sett. There is much to see at any time of the year and most animals will be out and about whatever the weather.

NYMANS
An intimate garden set around a romantic house & ruins. Home to a variety of flora , the pools, open meadows & clearings create a delightfully tranquil setting. The comfortable, yet elegant, house reflects the stories of the talented Messel family.

In Spring see blossom, bulbs and a stunning magnolia collection whilst in Summer the Rose Garden is scented with the fragrance of old-fashioned roses. Dramatic shows of vibrant native tree colour in Autumn precede Winter’s pockets of perfumed daphne.

TILGATE PARK 
For our visiting pet pooches Tilgate Park is a must visit. This outdoor expanse of lakes, lawns and gardens is also home to miles of woodland and bridleways, which are ideal for exploring on two feet or four with a tail.

STANDEN HOUSE & GARDEN
A beautiful arts & crafts family home with Morris & Co. interiors, set in a beautiful hillside garden. The house is dressed for a weekend stay in 1925, so you can imagine you are a guest of the family.

A major restoration of the 12 acre hillside garden showcases year-round seasonal highlights and an award-winning plant collection. On the wider estate, footpaths lead out into the woodlands, Ashdown Forest and the wider High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

SHEFFIELD PARK & GARDEN
The Grade I listed garden is a horticultural work of art created through centuries of landscape design, with influences of ‘Capability’ Brown and Humphry Repton. Four lakes are at the heart of the garden, with paths circulating through the glades & woodland surrounding them.

Each owner has left their mark, which can still be seen today in the layout of the lakes, the construction of Pulham Falls, the planting of Palm Walk and the many different tree and shrub species from around the world.

CHARTWELL HOUSE
Winston & Clementine Churchill bought Chartwell in 1922 & it was their home for over 40 years. The rooms in the house remain much as they were when the Churchills lived there withpersonal mementoes and a special exhibition giving insight into their lives.

Chartwell’s gardens reflect Winston Churchill’s love of landscape & nature. They include lakes, a kitchen garden and the Marycot, a playhouse designed for his youngest daughter Mary. Beyond the gardens there are woodlands with looped trails and natural play areas.

GLYNDEBOURNE
Glyndebourne is one of the most celebrated opera houses in the world, delivering performances to over 150,000 people across a Summer Festival and Autumn Season.

KINGSCOTE ESTATE

BLUEBELL RAILWAY 
Bluebell Railway is a preserved heritage railway line, housing a superb collection of vintage steam locomotives & carriages. The trains run on 11 mile route between Sheffield Park & East Grinstead, stopping at Horsted Keynes and Kingscote.

During your visit, learn about the industrial age, experience the thrill of getting up close to steam locomotives and luxuriate in the comfort of a bygone era. The stations are preserved in different periods of history including Victorian, 1930s and 1950s for an authentic experience.

A very warm welcome to Gravetye Manor, a delightful historic hotel set in more than 1,000 acres of tranquil English countryside yet just 30 miles from central London. With a magnificent Michelin Star restaurant and acres of mature gardens to explore, our 17-bedroom Manor House offers a truly enchanting stay.

Gravetye’s most notable owner, William Robinson one of the greatest gardeners of all time, bought the Manor and the one thousand acres in which it stands in 1885, and it was his home until he died well into his nineties in 1935.

It was at Gravetye that he realised many of his ideas for the creation of the English natural garden, the style of which is now admired and copied all over the world, but of which Robinson in the nineteenth century was a pioneer.

He had worked in many formal gardens in England and France but in his planning, planting and landscaping he sought always to enhance the natural beauty of the gardens and woods.

Peter Herbert arrived at Gravetye in 1958. Captivated by Robinson’s house and its setting he had the revolutionary idea of injecting his own exceptional hotel keeping and restaurant standards into this rural spot.

For nearly 50 years (until his retirement in 2004) Peter Herbert established Gravetye Manor as one of the leading establishments in its class, recognised throughout the world for offering the best kind of Country House Hotel Hospitality.

The hotel came under the ownership of fund manager Jeremy Hosking in February 2010. A long standing patron of the hotel, he has set about reversing the gradual decline the property had suffered over the last few years.

Major structural and infrastructure works have ensured the house will remain standing for generations to come. The hotels facilities internally have also been updated. His intention has always been to remain faithful to William Robinson’s own vision of Gravetye so changes were very sympathetically done.

The gardens are also receiving some much needed attention. Projects such as the restoration of the kitchen garden are already underway. The focus will be not only on conserving and re-creating Robinson’s work but also on progressing the garden in homage to his experimental style of gardening.

Ultimately it is Jeremy’s wish to continue the philosophy of great country house hospitality and to maintain and nurture this historically important garden. In 2018 we celebrated 60 years of Gravetye being open as a hotel.

To commemorate this landmark anniversary we built a new restaurant with views of the garden, which we completed in May 2018, almost 60 years to the day that Gravetye first opened its doors in 1958.

DINING AT GRAVETYE
We pride ourselves on serving up exceptional food in our Michelin Star restaurant and take gastronomic dining to a whole new level. Our award winning newly designed restaurant launched in May 2018, and provides uninterrupted views of our glorious gardens with floor to ceiling glass walls.

The passion of our Executive Chef, George Blogg, is evident in every single dish he creates. Eating with us really is a taste sensation. We take our lead from the ever-changing seasons and every single ingredient we use has either been grown in our Kitchen Garden, or sourced from a trusted, local supplier.

THE DINING ROOM
Throughout the year the produce from our walled kitchen garden, created by William Robinson at the turn of the last century, is the driving force behind the inspiration and seasonality of our menus.

The excellent relationships we have built with our local suppliers and the joint passion for their commitment to animal welfare and top quality produce are crucial to the high standards that we strive for. Our reputation as a first-class restaurant means that booking in advance is vital.

The Dining Room at Gravetye is smart casual. Smart jeans are acceptable, however in the evening, men do tend to wear a jacket. During the summer months, at lunch only, it would be acceptable for men to wear tailored shorts with a shirt.

We politely request no trainers or flip-flops please. Many people choose Gravetye to celebrate special occasions, the dress code is in place to ensure the atmosphere of our dining room reflects that.

Children over the age of seven are most welcome in our dining room, however, younger children can only be accepted when part of a private party using one of our private dining rooms. This includes ‘babes in arms.’

PRIVATE DINING
Experience the unforgettable thrill of private dining at Gravetye in one of our impressive wood panelled rooms. We have two private dining rooms; one with seating for 7 to 11 guests, the other a slightly larger room which can cater for up to 20 people.

Our Panelled room is available for between 9-20 guests, boardroom style with screen and projector until 5.00pm. Delegates can enjoy a working buffet lunch in The Panelled Room.

Suitable for between 6-8 delegates, our Private Dining Room can cater for more intimate, informal meetings until 5.00pm, without the use of a screen and projector. Delegates can enjoy a 2 course lunch in The Dining Room.

THE GARDENS
An oasis of calm set over 35 acres of beautiful grounds – welcome to our Gardens. Originally created by visionary gardener William Robinson in 1885, they are now considered one of the most important historic gardens in England.

Every tree, shrub and flower is lovingly cared for by our head gardener Tom Coward, and his dedicated team. The garden at Gravetye is an especially unique feature of the manor and a piece of heritage of which we are very proud.

They were originally created by William Robinson in 1885 and are now considered one of the most important historic gardens in England. Robinson started life in Ireland in the poverty of the potato famine, where at an early age he trained as a garden boy.

By the 1860s he had moved to London to work on the new botanic gardens in Regents Park, where he started his career as a garden writer. He produced huge amounts of work and set about re-shaping the way we think about gardens.

Some of his most influential books include The Wild Garden and The English Flower Garden, which remains the bestselling gardening book ever printed. He also ran several gardening journals such as The Garden and Garden Illustrated.

Today Robinson is best known for his concept of the wild garden, creating a landscape that celebrates nature rather than controls it. He also introduced the idea of the modern mixed border and popularised common place items such as secateurs and hose pipes.

In many ways Robinson created modern gardening as we know it and is affectionately remembered as the Irishman who taught the English how to garden. After a humble start in life, Robinson became very wealthy from his writing and in 1884 he bought Gravetye Manor.

Over time he ended up owning over 1000 acres of the surrounding landscape and used his estate to put his ideas into practice. Much of the land was used for experimental forestry, and the results of his work continue to be managed today by the William Robinson Trust.

But in the heart of the estate, on 35 acres surrounding the manor, he created his masterpiece garden of which we are now custodians. This garden takes a lot of work, and despite everyone’s best efforts it had fallen into a state of decline when Mr and Mrs Hosking bought the manor in 2010.

This resulted in a major renovation project, which continues today. With a team of eight full time gardeners we try and manage this historic garden progressively, in a way we hope that Robinson might be pleased. We regularly do Garden Tours, of which dates can be checked below.

FLOWER GARDEN
The flower garden terrace is situated at the back of the manor and is the first feature to greet you when entering the garden. During Robinson’s life the flower garden was constantly changing as he played with his ideas of the mixed border.

Today we try and manage this space in a similarly dynamic and experimental manner. In the spring the tulip display is very important. Then we use successional plantings of annuals and tender perennials, mixed with herbaceous perennials and shrubs to give a display of flower right up to the frosts.

KITCHEN GARDEN
Situated at the top of the hill, the kitchen garden is one of our standout features. Everything we grow here is used by our chef. That’s why our dishes are packed with deliciously fresh flavours.

Our cropping schedule and variety selection has been developed over the past six years to provide unique flavours, which can only come from a garden. Construction started on the walls in 1898, which took three years to build from local Sussex sand stone.

These walled gardens were once the centre of every estate in the country, producing food for the whole community but today most have fallen into disrepair.

This makes it very special that we can use the garden as it was originally. Many of our methods are exactly as they were 100 years ago, and preserving this heritage is an important part of what we do.

MEADOWS
Meadows are one of the most important elements of the wild garden at Gravetye. Robinson wrote a chapter in The Wild Garden book, which detailed his plans for his meadows and it has been fascinating and rewarding to continue developing his results.

The displays start in February with snow drops and crocuses. This is followed in March with drifts of daffodils, which flower through carpets of sky blue Scilla.

In April the display moves to wild tulips, Cammassia and countless other bulbs and by May the meadow is in full bloom with our native wild flowers. Our meadows are so rich with wild flowers that the tapestry of blooms continues into September, when it is mowed for hay.

ORCHARDS
Our orchards are set in two acres of land and are made up of three generations of planting. The oldest trees date back to Robinson’s day but most were lost in the 1987 storm. In the late 80’s Mr Herbert planted many trees and in 2011, to preserve the life of the orchard for future generations, we planted 50 others.

These trees are on vigorous rootstocks and are trained as traditional open centre bushes. All the fruit we grow is either used by our Head Chef in the restaurant or made into juice, which is served for breakfast. Delicious.

CROQUET LAWN
This fine lawn is an important feature in the garden. It can be used for games such as badminton, croquet and short tennis but is also the perfect peaceful sun trap to relax and enjoy a book.

In design terms it is very important as a break in the rhythm of the garden, offering a calm and empty space, contrasting with the wild garden on either side. Enjoy a game when you book your stay at Gravetye Manor.

GARDEN TOURS
The garden at Gravetye is an especially unique feature of the manor and a piece of heritage of which we are very proud.

They will guide you through our English countryside showcasing our beautiful flower garden and kitchen garden; where our homegrown produce starts its remarkable journey.

2022: Garden Tours will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from April until October, starting at 11.00 am – Join a member of our gardening team for a one hour tour of the historic garden at Gravetye.

This tour is available to anyone with a lunch reservation in the dining room or staying at the hotel. The cost is £25 per person. Please note that spaces are limited (20 people max.) on these tours so we recommend you register your interest as soon as possible.

Group Garden Tours and Private Dining – Limited Availability – A garden tour can be booked alongside a lunch, afternoon tea or dinner in one of our private rooms. Garden tours can start with groups as small as 9 to as large as 20.

Please note that the maximum we can accommodate for afternoon tea would be 12 from May to September. Any Groups larger than this would need to have lunch or dinner at the manor.

Whether it’s reading a good book in front of the fire, a gentle stroll in the garden or something a little more vigorous, there is still plenty to do and see in and around the Manor and beyond.

BEAUTY TREATMENTS
Gravetye Manor has joined with the highly qualified and experienced team at Ruuby Black Label to provide in room beauty treatments, including manicure/pedicure, facial, massage, reflexology and skin care detoxes.

Bespoke programmes will be created with each client using the highest quality product ranges and state of the art equipment. We have designed a range of bespoke oils and fragrances inspired by the seasons at Gravetye Manor.

Choose your favourite essences to compliment the season, from lime and mint to roasted apple and cinnamon to pine needles and bergamot. Immerse yourself in the scents of Gravetye while you relax in the comfort of your own room and awaken your senses.

All treatments begin with a 10 minute consultation with your therapist where you can discuss everything you want out of the session. All treatments last for 1 hour.

CROQUET
William Robinson’s playground, where local children used to dance on his birthday and still do to commemorate his special day, is a great spot for fun croquet. The location and view make it a wonderful place to enjoy a game with family and friends.

WALKING
We have planned some wonderful walks in the local area, ranging from 30 minutes to over 4 hours. Wellies are available for all!

BLUEBELL RAILWAY
Bluebell Railway – A Heritage Steam Railway running through the glorious Sussex countryside with a station on Gravetye’s doorstep. As the name suggests, at the right time of year swathes of bluebells line the tracks. William Robinson himself would throw bulbs from the moving train to encourage the flowers.

GLYNDEBOURNE OPERA FESTIVAL
The Glyndebourne Festival (May-August) celebrates world-class music and theatre at its best. In the world of opera, Glyndebourne is unique. Set in the Sussex countryside, it is nevertheless recognised globally as one of the great opera houses.

ASHDOWN FOREST
6500 acres of High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a great place for walking and enjoying spectacular views over the Sussex countryside. Also known the world over as the ‘home’ of Winnie-the-Pooh. Visit the famous Pooh Bridge near the village of Hartfield, only 15 minutes by car from Gravetye Manor.

Whether it be the Goodwood Revival, Glorious Goodwood or the Festival of Speed, Gravetye is the ideal base for all that Goodwood has to offer. Journey time to is approximately 75 minutes.

POLO
Sussex Polo – A professional and welcoming club. Ideal for players wanting high standards of low goal polo or to learn to play in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere all year round. Only a 10 minute drive from Gravetye Manor.

HICKSTEAD
Hickstead is synonymous with showjumping. As host to the British Grand Prix and the only Nations Cup competition in the British Isles, it is the home of British showjumping. Located only 35 minutes by car from Gravetye.

THE PRIEST HOUSE
The only one of its kind open to the public, this beautiful 15th century Wealden hall house stands in a traditional cottage garden in the picturesque nearby village of West Hoathly. The house was owned in turn by Henry VIII, Thomas Cromwell, Anne of Cleves, Mary I and Elizabeth I. Distance from Gravetye – 3 Miles

STANDEN
Dating from the 1890s and containing original Morris & Co furnishings and decorations, Standen survives today as a remarkable testimony to the ideas of the Arts and Crafts movement. Distance from Gravetye – 5 Miles

HEVER CASTLE
This was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s second wife. In 1903, the estate was bought by the American millionaire, William Waldorf Astor who spent an immense amount of money and imagination restoring the castle.

One of the most magnificent areas of the gardens is the Italian Garden, which was designed to display Astor’s collection of Italian sculpture. Other attractions include the maze, water maze and 38 acre lake. Distance from Gravetye – 18 Miles

PENSHURST PLACE
One of England’s greatest family owned stately homes with a history going back six and a half centuries. A marvellous mix of paintings, tapestries and furniture from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries can be seen throughout the house.

The gardens were first laid out in the 14th century and have been developed over successive years by the Sidney family who first came to Penshurst in 1552. Distance from Gravetye – 18 Miles

CHARTWELL
The family home of Sir Winston Churchill from 1924 until the end of his life. Musuem and Exhibition rooms contain displays, sound recordings and superb collections of memorabilia from Sir Winston’s political career. Distance from Gravetye – 24 Miles

The Pavilion is the former seaside residence of King George VI. Originally a simple farmhouse, in 1787 architect Henry Holland created a neo-classical villa on the site. ARUNDEL CASTLE

We work closely with local charities to reuse amenities such as, soaps, which are recycled into paints for children at the Bootmakers Workshop, and we are continuing to remove single-use plastics and reduce food waste with Winnow Solutions.

Our Master Bedroom, designed by Thomas Hardy, is exquisite. This is how you imagine royalty must have lived – with a grand king-size four-poster bed, antique furniture, a warming fire in the grate and a room big enough to take the most exquisite fabrics and furnishings.

Large windows overlook the gardens and hills beyond, while the room showcases two exceptional bathrooms, one with a walk-in shower and one with a freestanding bathtub and dressing table.

Principal King

Ivy Cottage
Set in a charming stone-built Dorset chalet, Ivy cottage is 400 years old and encapsulates the finest in intimate English countryside design, from the boutique 200 thread count bedspreads of the master bedroom to the dainty outdoor furniture of the private, sheltered garden.

Inside, an open log fire contributes to the cottage’s abundant Austen-esque romance, while outside, the bijoux garden makes for a bucolic perch in which to enjoy a morning coffee or a refreshing aperitif. There’s also two master bathrooms, one with a standalone central tub, the other with a spacious walk-in shower.

Ivy Cottage’s most decadent detail is its open-air hot tub, located in the private garden. While pretty throughout the day, it is enchanting at night, surrounded by the garden’s fairy candles and set under the dramatic Dorset stars.

In both the fine-dining setting of the Restaurant and the light and airy Conservatory, breakfast is an elegant affair. Executive Chef Steven Titman’s team uses seasonal, local ingredients, complemented by produce from our own kitchen gardens to craft delicious breakfast dishes.

Local flavours are the language of breakfast, from the farmhouse Somerset apple juice to the Dorset Muesli. Sublime West Country produce makes our buffet a locavore’s delight, while our cooked options showcase local eggs, Denhay bacon, honey from our own bee hives and bread from the Evershot Bakery. Hold your ceremony in our local church, in the hotel’s elegant Drawing Room, the intimate Dorchester Suite or weather permitting, outside in the hotel gardens with the idyllic Dorset countryside as your backdrop.

Saint Osmund’s Church is located in the village, just 100 yards from the hotel, with the Drawing Room and Dorchester Suite in the hotel main building.

Drawing Room
The elegant Drawing Room is located next to the Bar and is beautifully decorated in a traditional style. Perfect for civil ceremonies of up to 40 guests, including the registrar, it’s an ideal venue for the wedding ceremony, before enjoying drinks in the Bar or on the terrace.

The Restaurant
Choose from exclusive-use hire for the evenings, or non-exclusive use for intimate lunchtime celebrations. The restaurant and the adjoining conservatory seat a maximum of 76 guests, or perhaps choose the adjoining Conservatory on its own for up to 20 people.

The Dorchester Suite
The splendid Dorchester Suite offers style and sophistication in peaceful surroundings. Ideal for more intimate weddings, The Dorchester Suite can accommodate up to 22 guests (including registrar) for ceremonies and receptions or a private wedding breakfast for up to 12 people.

Meetings & Events
Make business a pleasure in our beautiful Dorchester Suite, located in the Courtyard House of Summer Lodge Hotel, Dorset.

Suitable for private meetings, receptions, lunches and dinners, it can seat 14 people in a boardroom style as well as 24 in a theatre style, providing an intimate environment in which to focus your attention. We are also delighted to offer Summer Lodge for exclusive use.

Adventure is at our heart
In the fresh country air of Summer Lodge, your mind inevitably turns to outdoor pursuits and inner peace. Here in the Dorset countryside, you can find almost any sporting activity or healing therapy. Nearby, you’ll find opportunities for walking, cycling, horse riding, fishing and golf.

You don’t have to leave our grounds to indulge in a bout of gentle – or not so gentle – exercise. We have our own heated indoor pool, a fully equipped gymnasium, bicycles, and in our stunning gardens you will find a croquet lawn, and an all-weather tennis court.

Equestrian
A selection of different riding experiences are available to the public in these two different schools. From experienced riders wanting to enjoy a hack in the countryside or on the beach, to novices looking for their first lessons all abilities can be catered for.

The two schools offer a variety of terrain as one is farmland and the other is a seaside school allowing guests to experience the best of both.

Falconry
Discover the ancient form of falconry right here at Summer Lodge. Paul, together with his Harris hawks Bertie, Titch and Bumble, will treat guests to a unique experience.

After a short introduction to the hawks, you’ll take a 60 – 90 minute stroll around the grounds, with a chance to learn all about these majestic birds of prey. Watch as the hawks leave and return to Paul’s glove on command, swooping and soaring overhead with impressive speed and agility.

To ensure your safety during this time, you can choose whether to have a hands-on encounter with the birds or a no hands-on encounter (with gloves). The walk around the grounds will be conducted with 2-metre physical distancing measures.

Shooting
There are few country pursuits as grand or that offer such a frill as shooting. Whether you’re a newcomer starting off with some clay shooting, or a seasoned game shooting pro, there’s something for everybody to enjoy.

Fishing
We are fortunate at Summer Lodge to have both fantastic fly fishing and terrific trout fishing on our doorstep, set amongst the beautiful countryside of Dorset. Suitable for beginners and competent fishermen alike, we can tailor your half day or full day experience to suit your ability.

Fly fishing
Wrackleford offers some four miles of Dry Fly Fishing on the River Frome, divided into individual fishing beats, most with their own small fishing hut.

Each fishing boat is rented by the day and we can now provide complete fishing equipment, from rods and waders to flies and leader, and given a little notice we can offer a fully guided day with instruction.

The possibility exists for individual fishing on the river, or for organised groups of up to 12 who specifically come for fishing.

Trout fishing
Trout fishing only five miles away: the lakes at Flowers Farm are situated in an attractive natural environment with views overlooking the Blackmore Vale. The fishery comprises five lakes, stocked with high-quality Brown and Rainbow trout. Tuition can be arranged and tackle can be hired.

Sailing
It’s difficult to beat the feeling of freedom that comes from being on the open ocean. Quality Time Training is based on the Isle of Portland, in Portland Marina, perfectly located to enjoy some of the most sheltered waters on the south coast and the stunning and picturesque South West coastline.

Golf
Practise your swing at a selection of four golf courses close to Summer Lodge. We would be delighted to arrange chauffeured transfers to the course and to make any bookings on your behalf.

Ballooning
A balloon flight is a form of flying like no other. You can see in 360 degrees for miles on end, and your flight feels absolutely uninhibited and free. As the landscape shrinks into miniature, a model world appears below and familiar landmarks take on new perspectives.

Whether you are close to the ground viewing the fascinating wildlife, up amongst the clouds marvelling at their powdery appearance, or peering down at dramatic cliffs, rolling hills and toybox towns, you will be intrigued by this aerial mystery tour.

We have partnered with Flyaway Ballooning who have numerous locations in the South West, including right here in Dorset at Summer Lodge. Fly Away Ballooning was founded by a third-generation balloon pilot Hugo Hall.

Hugo’s grandmother Lady Gwen Bellew was a ballooning pioneer and an important figure in introducing Hot Air Ballooning to the United Kingdom.

Hugo has followed in his family’s footsteps and has flown all over the world in far-flung locations such as the mountains of North East India, The Outback and over the rice fields of Chiang Mai.

Country pursuits
Guests at Summer Lodge have access to the adjacent 600 acre Melbury Estate and Deer Park, and we will be delighted to provide Wellington boots in all sizes as well as maps of the best walks and jogging routes.

If you’d like, we’ll provide a picnic for you to enjoy among the scenic landscapes, while for the artist in you, we’ll provide complimentary paints, brushes and easels with which to capture the moment as your special personal keepsake of your time with us.

A little further afield is the World Heritage Coastline which includes some of England’s best beaches, snug coves and sheltered bays, among them the world-renowned Chesil Beach. Around 45 minutes away by car, we’ll be delighted to make all the arrangements for a day trip, including transportation and refreshments.

Within the Dorset countryside there are many outdoor activities to enjoy such as cycling, horse-riding, country walks, fishing, while for those interested in arts and crafts, needlecraft and antiques, this is an area that abounds in specialist shops and suppliers.

Surrounded by beautiful countryside
Our beautiful hotel is located within Hardy’s enchanting village of Evershot, in West Dorset. We are also a 25 minutes’ drive from the Jurassic coast. Evershot is 1 mile west of the A37, about halfway between Dorchester and Yeovil. The hotel entrance is in Summer Lane.

Local towns
We are very lucky at Summer Lodge to have such a fantastic and vast selection of historic towns and villages on our doorstep. The best way to know a place is to get out and experience it first hand… The estimated times for the journeys below are based on driving.

Sherborne
Sherborne is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful towns in England. With its abundance of medieval buildings, Sherborne has much to offer visitors, including a superb 1300-year-old Abbey – an important early example of perpendicular architecture and burial place of two Saxon kings.

Sherborne Abbey is one of only 18 churches awarded five stars in Simon Jenkins’ England’s Thousand Best Churches.

The area also features a picturesque Almshouse, two castles and Cheap Street, lined with boutique shops, art galleries, delicatessens and coffee shops. Enjoy lunch at The Pear Tree, a lovely delicatessen and café. Distance: 11.8 miles – Journey time: 27 minutes

Charmouth
The entire village of Charmouth is a World Heritage Site, and probably the best place to find the fossils constantly being exposed by the mudslides from the cliffs. Hammers are available for hire (alongside the buckets and spades) from the smart heritage centre.

Return to Bridport where you could lunch at The Bull Hotel. En route, visit the Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast. The view from here is, of course, spectacular. Charmouth is also where some scenes from the TV drama ‘Broadchurch’ were filmed. Distance: 19.5 miles – Journey time: 40 minutes

Abbotsbury
When Henry VIII dissolved the larger monasteries of England, he sold the lands forfeited from the Benedictine monks at Abbotsbury to the predecessors of the Ilchester family for whom Summer Lodge was built as a dower house.

Abbotsbury, still owned nearly half a millennium later by the Ilchesters, is well worth a visit. Famous for its swannery, Abbey ruins, St Catherine’s hilltop chapel, tithe barn (now home to a children’s farm) and beautiful town crammed with pubs, coffee shops, antique stores and galleries, one should also visit the sub-tropical gardens and the 18-mile pebble barrier known as Chesil beach. Distance: 16.1 miles – Journey time: 32 minutes

Beaminster, Forde Abbey & Lyme Regis
Travelling west from the hotel, head towards Beaminster, a town with a square of over 200 listed buildings. Continue to Forde Abbey, formerly a Cistercian monastery founded in 1141, renowned for its award-winning gardens and still privately owned.

From there, travel to the quaint seaside town of Lyme Regis, former home of Jane Austen and the town where ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ was filmed. There you can visit the Harbour Inn, Town Mill (cheesemonger, micro-brewery, art galleries, pottery, knitwear studio and ancient working flour mill) and Dinosaurland.

Lunch at the Mill Tea and Dining Room, or Lyme’s Fish Bar for the best fish and chips. Afternoon Tea at the Alexandra Hotel offers spectacular views over Lyme Bay. Distance: 22.4 miles – Journey time: 46 minutes

Lawrence of Arabia, Lulworth Cove & Tyneham
T. E. Lawrence’s Cottage, Clouds Hill, was chosen by him because of its proximity to Bovington Camp where he was stationed. Bovington remains an army camp today and is home to the world’s largest Tank Museum.

Lulworth is a short drive away, famous for its mock Jacobean Castle (where Emma Thompson’s ‘Nanny McPhee’ was filmed), horseshoe-shaped harbour created about 10 000 years ago and of course, Durdle Door.

A motorboat service will take you to Durdle Door by sea from where you can best enjoy this beautiful coastline. Tyneham is also nearby – a deserted and perfectly preserved village in a hidden valley. Distance: 23 miles – Journey time: 37 minutes

Poole
A coastal town in Dorset, Poole’s attractions are its award-winning sandy beaches and having the second-largest natural harbour in the world after Sydney, Australia.

There is plenty to do and see in Poole, and the harbour’s shallow waters make it perfect for water-based activities, including sailing, or fishing. On land, you can visit Brownsea Island, a wildlife sanctuary home to the red squirrel and a large variety of birds.

The town centre is also a walkable distance away, perfect for shopping at independent stores and grabbing a bite to eat. Distance: 36.4 miles – Journey time: 50 minutes

Bath
The largest city in Somerset, Bath is most famous for its Roman-built baths, making it the perfect location for leisurely pursuits and wellness. For this reason alone, it is one of the most popular cities visited by tourists every year.

Bath also has other popular attractions including the Royal Victoria Park which hosts seasonal events and open-air concerts, as well as many museums and galleries to explore.

The Royal Crescent, one of Bath’s most iconic landmarks, is 500-foot-long and is an impressive example of Georgian architecture. Distance: 49.5 miles – Journey time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Salisbury
Located in Wiltshire, Salisbury is a city most famous for its Cathedral Church of Blessed Virgin Mary. The church has the tallest spire as well as the world’s oldest working clock! It also has the original copies of the Magna Carta.

Salisbury is home to an International Arts Festival which attracts some of the biggest names in literature. As well as independent shops and restaurants, the city has over 80 pubs despite its small size, boasting its own local brewery called the Hop Back.

Stonehenge, one of the best-known prehistoric monuments in Europe is located just 9 miles from Salisbury and is easily accessible by car or public transport. Distance: 54 miles – Journey time: 1 hour 20 minutes

Bournemouth
The largest coastal town in Dorset, Bournemouth is a popular holiday destination, and it has been voted one of the best coastal resorts in England. A family-friendly destination, its seven miles of golden beaches are perfect for activities or simply just relaxation.

A major tourist spot, Bournemouth is home to the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, just a couple of minutes from the beach. It’s a popular foodie destination too – enjoy award-winning fish and chips from Harry Ramsden as you watch the many surfers riding the waves. Distance: 41.1 miles – Journey time: 1 hour

Exeter
Known as Devon’s cathedral city, Exeter has over 2,000 years of history. Exeter Cathedral, which lies at the heart of the city, is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in England. A compact size, Exeter is a great shopping destination with both high street and independent stores to browse.

Underneath the city’s streets lies exciting underground passages, which you can explore on a tour – these passages date back to medieval times. Distance: 57.1  miles – Journey time: 1 hour 20 minutes

Whether you are interested in the architecture and the history, the flower and fauna, or simply just enjoy taking a stroll in a beautiful setting, we have a selection of our best for you to view.

Abbotsbury Gardens
Established in 1765 by the first Countess of Ilchester as a kitchen garden for her nearby castle. Developed since then into a magnificent landscape with 20 acres of rare and exotic plants from all over the world.

Many of these plants were first introductions, brought to this country by the planting descendants of the Countess. Distance: 18 miles – Journey time: 35 minutes

Barrington Court

Lulworth Castle

Keyneston Mill

Lytes Cary Manor
An intimate medieval manor house with a beautiful Arts and Crafts garden where you can imagine living. Originally the family home of Henry Lyte, where he translated the unique Nieuwe Herball book on herbal remedies, lovingly restored in the 20th century by Sir Walter Jenner.

The garden rooms contain a magical collection of topiary and herbaceous borders, while tranquil walks on the estate take you along the River Cary. Distance: 18 miles – Journey time: 30 minutes

Mapperton
The house dates from the 16th century but was enlarged early to the mid-17th century and partly remodelled in the mid-18th. Formal gardens were created in a valley to the east of the house by Mrs Labouchere in 1927 and modified since 1955.

Three terraces with 1960s orangery, topiary yews, pergola and lily pond lead to a less formal area. Distance: 6 miles – Journey time: 23 minutes

Minterne
Built on the site of an earlier house, with an 18th-century landscape created by Admiral Robert Digby in the manner of Capability Brown who was working at nearby Sherborne Castle at the time.

The gardens are laid out in a horseshoe overlooking a valley with lakes and a cascade. Early 20th century trees and shrubs were introduced from Wilson, Forrest, Rock, Farrer and Kingdom Ward expeditions to the Himalayas. Distance: 7 miles – Journey time: 24 minutes

Lulworth Cove
A near-perfect semi-circular beach, carved out of the cliffs by the power of the sea, offers safe bathing in the sheltered bay, rock pools at low tide and endless diversions for the geologically inclined.

From Lulworth Cove there is a popular 2km walk along the cliffs to the equally impressive Durdle Door, a natural arch of limestone rock that overlooks the cove. Distance: 28 miles – Journey time: 45 minutes

Chesil Beach
Chesil Beach is an 18-mile shingle spit reaching from Portland Bill to Abbotsbury, wonderful for walking and bird watching, and a popular centre for windsurfing.

Whilst in the area, visit the Hive Beach Café at nearby Burton Bradstock or the River Cafe in West Bay where much of the crime series Broadchurch was filmed. Distance: 21 miles – Journey time: 43 minutes

Portland Harbour
This is the place for water sports: scuba diving, kite surfing, kayaking, windsurfing and sailing. It was also home to the London 2012 Olympic sailing events, hosted by the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, which also offers sailing lessons.

Studland Bay
Studland Bay offers 3 miles of beautiful sandy beaches in the unspoilt surroundings of Studland Nature Reserve, a 3200-hectare area of heathland which is a haven for rare birds. The bay’s four main beaches include a National Trust visitor centre and a water sports equipment hire shop, both on Knoll Beach.

Whilst in the area, pop into the Square and Compass Pub in nearby Worth Matravers. You might also like to try some horse-riding at Studland Stables, for rides on the beach, in the forest, on the heath and along the coastal ridge – spectacular views! Distance: 42 miles – Journey time: 1 hour, 10 minutes

Burton Bradstock
Ideal for families and perfect for swimmers, Burton Bradstock has ample parking and is easily accessible from neighbouring Bridport. Wonderful cliff top walks can be taken from both ends of the beach.

Whilst in this area, you might like to visit Whitchurch Canonicorum, where you will find the only saint’s relics in England in a parish church.

Also buried here is Sir George Somers (the real-life shipwreck who inspired Shakespeare to write the ‘Tempest’), colonizer of the American state of Virginia and the Caribbean island of Bermuda. Distance: 16 miles – Journey time: 30 minutes

Weymouth
Weymouth’s status as a seaside resort was established over 200 years ago when King George III visited to ‘take the waters’. However, a fact that is likely to be of more interest to the children is that Weymouth’s sand is renowned for being particularly suited to sand sculpture and, more importantly, sandcastle building.

Second Wind, a water sports company, offers Jurassic kayak tours, coasteering (jumping/swimming/climbing and rock-hopping on a variety of natural routes), windsurfing tuition, Jurassic paddle-boarding, Weymouth sailing and kite-surfing. Distance: 22 miles – Journey time: 35 minutes

Thomas Hardy
He was born at Higher Bockhampton, Dorset, on June 2 1840, where his father worked as a master mason and builder. From his father, he gained an appreciation of music and from his mother, an appetite for learning and the delights of the countryside about his rural home.

The Architect
At the age of 16, Hardy helped his father with the architectural drawings for a restoration of Woodsford Castle. The owner, architect James Hicks, was impressed by the younger Hardy’s work, and took him on as an apprentice.

In 1862, aged 22, Hardy moved to London to study and enrolled as a student at King’s College. He worked for prominent architect Arthur Blomfield and won prizes from both the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Architectural Association.

The poet
During this time he began writing, but his poems were rejected by a number of publishers. Poor health forced him to return to Dorset in 1867 and he began to write full time. After the 5th Earl’s marriage in 1872 he embarked on a major expansion of Melbury, including the addition of the Grand Library.

Following its completion he set about an expansion of Summer Lodge which had been built as the Dower House for Melbury, by the 2nd Earl, in 1798.

This addition of the Drawing Room and Master Suite was done in 1893 and it’s generally believed that following their earlier meetings, The 5th Earl, then resident of Summer Lodge, asked Hardy to design the extension.

This new addition is architecturally rather different from the original part of the house and is notable for its high ceilings and particularly for the tall sash windows which allow its rooms to be flooded with natural light.

The Poet & Novelist
Hardy published his first novel, Desperate Remedies, in 1871 to universal disinterest. But the following year Under the Greenwood Tree brought Hardy popular acclaim for the first time.

As with most of his fictional works, Greenwood Tree incorporated real places around Dorset into the plot, including the village school of Higher Bockhampton that Hardy had first attended as a child.

The success of Greenwood Tree brought Hardy a commission to write a serialized novel, A Pair of Blue Eyes, for Tinsley’s Magazine. Once more, Hardy drew upon real life and the novel mirrors his own courtship of Emma.

Hardy followed this with Far From the Madding Crowd, set in Puddletown (renamed Weatherby), near his birthplace. This novel finally netted Hardy the success that enabled him to give up his architectural practice and concentrate solely on writing.

THE HISTORY
The land where Amberley Castle stands was gifted to Bishop Wilfrid in 683 AD by Caedwalla, King of Wessex and the castle’s current buildings owe their origins to a timber-framed hunting lodge built in 1103 by Bishop Luffa.

The following 400 years saw this lodge transformed into a fortified manor house complete with crenelations, battlements and a portcullis under the supervision of a number of resident bishops.

In the wake of the English reformation, the castle was leased to a series of tenants and during the Civil War it became a royalist strong hold. Oliver Cromwell sent General Waller to destroy the defences in 1643 and 20 to 30 feet was lost from the Curtain Walls and the Great Hall was destroyed, creating a ruin.

After the Civil War, Amberley Castle was seized from the Church by Parliament and sold by the Office of Sequestration of Estates to Mr John Butler, a cloth merchant from London who built the Manor House out of the ruins which had been the Great Hall.

RESTORATION
With the restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, King Charles II visited Amberley twice and in 1660 gave the castle back to the Bishopric.

No mention of reimbursement to Mr Butler was made, however they eventually did negotiate a long lease and the Butler family continued to live at the castle for a further two generations.

In 1872, the castle was sold by the church commissioners to Lord Zouche, owner of Parham House. It was used as a hunting lodge and continued in this employment when it was sold on to the 15th Duke of Norfolk in 1893 who subsequently initiated the repair of the stone work over the portcullis.

THE EMMET FAMILY
In 1926, Amberley Castle was bought by the Emmet family. In 1982, the castle was sold by the family and with this sale, the Castle Farm and the castle grounds were divided.

Hollis Baker then owned the castle from 1982 -1987 and reinstated the 2.5 ton ancient portcullis. In 1989 the castle was converted into a hotel which has enjoyed an international reputation for luxury ever since.

THE HEAD CHEF PAUL PETERS
An Australian, Paul grew up in Sydney where he embarked on a four year apprenticeship, before taking his first job at Bogart Restaurant as Chef de Partie, later experiencing roles in various kitchens before being appointed to his first head chef role at Victoria Hotel in the Hunter Valley.

Moving to the UK in January 2000, Paul’s first UK role was as a Junior Sous Chef at the Lygon Arms Hotel, then undertaking stages at restaurants including with heroes Nico Ladenis at Chez Nico and John Burton Race, before taking roles working with Marco Pierre White and at Raffles ‘Browns Hotel’, Green Park.

Leading the kitchens at Amberley, Paul describes his style as classically trained, with modern and Asian twists.

His dedicated approach to his menus, serving the freshest of ingredients, cooked in innovative and exciting ways, draws praise from guests, and has seen the kitchen awarded 3AA rosettes since 2018, placing it in the top 10% of all AA rated hotels across the UK to hold such an accolade.

Parham House – Originally belonging to the Abbey of Westminster, King Henry VIII granted the manor of Parham to a London mercer called Robert Palmer. The foundations were then laid in 1577 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

The Parham Estate today spans across 875 acres and has different parts to it. There is a historic deer park which encompasses rare and protected pieces of nature including trees, animals and insects and has limited access to visitors.

The Royal Pavilion – The spectacular seaside palace of the Prince Regent, who later became King George IV, is inspiring for its exotic and oriental style both internally and externally.

MUSEUMS

With a rich history, West Sussex has many museums and sites of historical interest to enjoy.

Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre – Just a few moments from the Castle, is the Amberley Working Museum. With a large 36 acre site, there is a lot to explore, from railways and bus services (both of which freely carry you around the site) to printing workshops and much more.

The museum is dedicated to the industrial heritage of the South East but is also home to traditional crafts people such as the stained glass makers, black smiths and potters. There is also a great restaurant and many picnic sites from which the beautiful surroundings can be savoured.

Bignor Roman Villa – Bignor Roman Villa, situated just minutes away from Amberley Castle, lies in the centre of the South Downs National Park. Explore the Villa on your own, or maybe take the tour as staff are always available.

Enjoy the tea rooms with lovely homemade cakes or take a look around the shop. The site’s beautiful mosaics are not the only thing that may capture the eye due to the unrivalled views and access to walks along the South Downs.

A short distance from the Villa lays the quaint village of Bignor, with houses, gardens and a 13th Century Church to explore.

Fishbourne Roman Palace & Gardens – If you wish to venture further than Bignor, then you can take your mind back and imagine what would have been the luxury of this extravagant Roman residence at the largest Roman villa in the country.

Stroll around the recreated Roman gardens – the earliest gardens found anywhere in the country – and enjoy the largest collection of mosaics in situ in the UK.

Goodwood House – At the heart of the beautiful Sussex countryside lies the opulent English country house that has been home to the Dukes of Richmond for centuries. Goodwood House has picturesque views of the surrounding scenery, as well as charming woodlands to explore.

They serve a sumptuous cream tea in the Ballroom on Open Days for visitors taking a tour of the House.

Weald & Downland Museum – Discover rescued traditional rural buildings set in a beautiful landscape, which tell the stories of the men, women and children who lived and worked in them over a 950-year period.

Enjoy the Museum’s 40-acre site and visit the collection of historic buildings – with 50 to explore and many of the exhibit houses furnished to recreate historic domestic interiors.

There is a regular programme of domestic and craft demonstrations, including cooking in a Tudor kitchen; blacksmithing in a Victorian smithy; plus seasonal demonstrations. Take a walk in the woods, visit the café kiosk or enjoy your own picnic.

LOCAL TOWNS & VILLAGES
The beautiful market towns and cities of West Sussex, set in the heart of the south downs national park leave so much to explore. We have chosen a short selection of our favourite places to see before you leave, near to the castle and a little further afield!

Arundel – Charming, stylish and full of history, the picturesque market town of Arundel in West Sussex is probably most famous for two stunning landmarks – Arundel Castle and Arundel Cathedral.

Enjoy a great range of things to do for families, couples and groups including fishing, boating, wildlife watching, outdoor swimming and walks on the nearby South Downs.

Shop at independent boutiques, antique markets and art galleries or eat out overlooking the River Arun in one of Arundel’s pretty waterside pubs, cafés and restaurants.

Petworth – The beautiful market town of Petworth, a centre for arts and culture, is set in the heart of the south downs national park and surrounded by the walls of Petworth house and park.

Chichester – The City of Chichester, shaped by its unique heritage, is made for exploring. Blending old and new, Chichester offers an enticing mix of designer label boutiques, high street shopping, renowned art galleries and stylish restaurants and contemporary cafés.

Home to the beautiful Bosham Harbour, only a ten minute walk from the city centre.

Brighton – Discover attractions such as the Brighton Pier, the Royal Pavilion and the brand new British Airways i360. The city is also home to a cornucopia of cultural delights as well as big name shops and hundreds of independent boutiques.

There are many award-winning restaurants in Brighton & Hove catering for all tastes from classic fish ‘n’ chips to creative vegetarian restaurants and even a zero waste restaurant.

Bognor & Littlehampton – Traditional seaside towns with many rides and amusements for the children. Be sure to enjoy the towns many parks and gardens, or just relax at one of the town’s café’s or public houses.

Take in a show at the Alexandra Theatre, or enjoy some live music at one of the towns many music pubs. The town is proud of its clean beaches and relaxed welcoming atmosphere.

WALKING
There are short rambles, beach side walks and longer trail walks with stunning views for you to enjoy in West Sussex, here are a small selection of what we recommend to get you started. Amberley – Amberley is a chocolate box village with many old buildings, thatched cottages, a castle, a church, two pubs and a shop. There is also a working pottery. Amberley Wild Brooks is a large area of flood meadows, one of the richest wetlands remaining in the UK.

Amberley to Arundel – This linear West Sussex walk explores the River Arun from Arundel upstream to Amberley. The start is Arundel railway station (grid ref. TQ024064) where regular trains connect with the end of the walk at Amberley.

South Downs Way – Experience some of our finest countryside between Winchester, the first capital of England, and the white chalk cliffs at Eastbourne. If you’re looking for attractive wildlife, visible prehistory, fine pubs and pretty villages, or if you just fancy a challenge, the 100 miles of the South Downs Way awaits you.

Centurion’s Way – The Centurion Way was once the Chichester to Midhurst Railway line. The section between Lavant and Chichester was used for the transportation of sugar beet and was closed completely in 1957.

The tracks were removed in 1993. The name Centurion Way was suggested by a local schoolboy and is based on the fact that the path crosses the course of a Roman road.

The easy access trail (1.5km) runs from Chichester to West Dean Estate and is available for cyclists and walkers to use. The easy access trail runs on a section of the Way, close to West Dean.

Halnaker Windmill – Visit this Grade 2 listed building, World War 2 Observation Post and Neolithic Earthworks in Halnaker village near Chichester. This iconic Sussex landmark, perched on Halnaker Hill and visible from a wide surrounding area, is well worth the climb to admire close up.

The wildflower-rich chalk grassland at the hilltop is a great spot to get away from it all and enjoy fine views of the coast across a patchwork of woods and farmland. Access is only possible by foot, it is possible to park 2 miles away in a lay-by and make the picturesque walk to the windmill.

DAYS OUT
There are so many interesting days out, places to visit and leading tourist attractions in West Sussex. Here’s our selection of some of the best places to go for a good day out…

Wey & Arun Canal – The Wey & Arun Canal runs through Surrey and West Sussex in Southern England. This rural waterway is recognised as a national heritage asset, as well as providing a haven for wildlife.

The Trust has several ongoing restoration projects, and lengths of the canal are now in water. Trip boats with up to 50 seats run cruises on the idyllic Loxwood section of the canal.

West Dean Gardens – Nestled at the foot of the South Downs, West Dean Gardens is one of the greatest restored gardens open to the public today. Visitors can explore a wide range of features on a gentle walk around the grounds.

From surreal trees to the restored walled garden, West Dean Gardens proudly presents its rich creative and social heritage. Complete with its own Visit England endorsed restaurant, it is the perfect way to end a day out with a well-deserved afternoon tea!

WWT Arundel Wetlands Centre – See the wild side of Arundel! WWT Wetlands Centre is a beautiful reserve nestled in the South Downs National Park. Take a free guided boat safari to glimpse a rare water vole or see vividly coloured kingfishers.

Hand feed our collection of birds, including the nene, one of the world’s rarest water birds.

South Downs Heritage Centre – A unique attraction in a stunning oak-framed barn. Independent artists showcase their work, local award winning food producers are in the food hall.

Pairock is our ground floor accessible room. In calm cream, with elegant touches of sage, it’s a cosy and bright space with an en suite wet room complete with decorative tiled floor and a huge drench shower.

There’s a king-size Hypnos bed to snuggle up in and a comfy seating area, with some lovely touches – a collection of vintage frames showcases beachcombing finds and local landmarks. Pairock’s oak floors make it a brilliant dog-friendly room too.

INBYESIDE ROOM
There’s a fresh feel to Inbyeside with its wallpaper full of summer flowers; you’ll also find a combination of wood panelling in soft colours with exposed stonework and natural materials combining to give a harmonious and comfortable feel. Vintage-inspired frames showcase small collections of beach finds and touches of earth tones make the space warm and welcoming.

There’s a large impressive en suite room with double sinks, a substantial walk-in drench shower and lovely exposed stonework showing off the original structure of this historic building. On the first floor, Inbyeside also has it’s own secluded outdoor terrace where you can enjoy an aperitif under the stars or catch the last rays of the sun after a lazy day on the beach.

DOOSE ROOM
On the first floor, dramatic Doose has sumptuous fabric wallpaper in deep navy blue with accents of bright red. Full length curtains in stripes of red and dark sand with soft carpet underfoot create a wonderfully cosy feel; with a walk-in drench shower in the ensuite bathroom, and lovely vintage-inspired glass light fittings, Doose combines a contemporary edge with comfort.

We’ve used natural materials for the bespoke wooden desk and bedside tables, which look gorgeous in the glow of the gentle lighting, all together creating a supremely comfortable ambience. Curl up in Doose’s luxurious King size bed and relax with a movie on the wall-mounted screen. It’s the cosiest place to unwind.

CANTY ROOM
On the first floor, Canty is a stunning light filled space, with its high vaulted ceiling, original wooden beams and exposed stonework. There’s a gorgeous sofa which converts to a double bed, so it’s an ideal room for family stays. Its big windows have padded seats and plenty of cushions so you can curl up with a book or just watch the world go by.

Decorated in cool creams with deep claret colour accents and natural fabrics, the stripped back wooden floor and contemporary design sets off the original features beautifully. Snuggle up in Canty’s King size bed with a seafaring-inspired glass lantern overhead and you’ll drift off for the perfect night’s sleep.

SHIEL ROOM
One of our really sumptuous Heritage Rooms, there’s lots to discover in Shiel. We’ve made the most of our historic building, so there’s high ceiling spaces open to the roof as well as a dramatic exposed stone wall. When you walk in you’ll see that first floor Shiel is full of lovely natural light with soft green and sage accents complementing the original features.

Collections of vintage postcards and beachcombing finds hang on the walls and a stunning bespoke pendant light is suspended over the Super King size bed, with soft carpet underfoot. But that’s not all – a doorway leads through into a cosy lounge area where you’ll find more beautiful stonework, an oak floor and an original fireplace featuring a stone lintel and hearth.

It couldn’t be a more perfect haven for curling up on the sofa and watching a movie. Another door then leads onto the en suite bathroom with a walk-in drench shower and more gorgeous original stonework.

Sheil also has its own outdoor terrace where you can relax after a day on the beach. Sheil is not only convertible to a twin room but the sofa is also a double bed, making it a very flexible space for families to enjoy.

CRAA’S NEST ROOM
Perched on the top floor of the hotel, the Craa’s Nest is a superb light and airy Heritage Room. With big windows on three sides and a view of the seas on one side and the Cheviot Hills on the other, it’s the perfect lookout spot. There are high vaulted ceilings with wooden beams, and you’ll love its warm tones and mocha colours.

Gorgeous wooden pendant lights hang in the huge roof space casting a soft glow and illuminating the free-standing copper bath, stunningly situated as a focal point of the room – you can even watch a movie from the bath. There’s a nod to the seaside with its colours of stone and dark sand, not to mention a telescope – to scan the horizon for ships!

There’s more to discover as Craa’s Nest has a luxurious super king size bed, a comfy seating area and also a dark cream wood-panelled en suite room with a walk-in drench shower. Truly the perfect secluded spot for a luxurious getaway.

ALNWICK CASTLE 
Often referred to as the ‘Windsor of the North,’ Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in the country and has been home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family, the Percys, for over 700 years.

Combining magnificent medieval architecture with Italianate state rooms, Alnwick Castle is one of the UK’s most significant heritage destinations and one of the most impressive visitor attractions in Northumberland.

The Castle has a rich and varied history is full of drama and intrigue, from a gunpowder plotter and visionary collectors, to decadent hosts and medieval England’s most famous knight: Harry Hotspur.

In more recent times, the castle has also featured in a number of film and TV productions, notably as Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey and previously appearing as parts of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter films.

BAMBURGH CASTLE
Once the royal seat of the Kings of Northumbria, Bamburgh Castle has stood guard over this beautiful coastline for over 1,400 years. Spanning nine acres of land on its rocky plateau, Bamburgh Castle is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country.

The Bamburgh castle seen today is a relatively recent structure, built by famed industrialist the first Lord Armstrong at vast cost in late Victorian times. Lord Armstrong was also responsible for building Cragside House, Gardens & Estates.

But the castle site has a much longer history. There have been settlements there since prehistoric times and the regular archaeological digs that take place on the site have unearthed some spectacular finds.

The castle sits above the beach at Bamburgh which is one of the UK’s most beautiful and most photographed beaches. It’s the perfect place to go for a windswept walk at any time of the year and in summer the golden sands and picturesque sand dunes make the perfect backdrop for a longer stay or a lunchtime picnic.

LINDISFARNE – HOLY ISLAND 
Just a few miles north of Beadnell village is Lindisfarne – or Holy Island as it is also known locally, one of the most special locations in the whole of the UK. The island is cut off from the mainland twice daily and can only be reached at certain times of the day via a causeway.

The island has a small, pretty village and two historic properties, Lindisfarne Priory and Lindisfarne Castle. With beautiful walks, amazing wildlife and a handful of shops, pubs and cafes, Holy Island offers an unusual and enchanting day trip.

FARNE ISLANDS
The Farne Islands are one of the most exciting seabird colonies in England, with unrivalled views of 23 species of birds, including around 37,000 pairs of puffins.

It’s also home to a one of the top grey seal pupping sites in England, with more than 2,000 pups born every autumn. The islands lie two to three miles off the coast, midway between Seahouses and Bamburgh, both of which are close to Beadnell village.

CRAGSIDE
This amazing visitor attraction was the home of Lord Armstrong, Victorian inventor and industrialist. This stunning house, set in extensive gardens and woodland, was the first in the country to be lit by hydroelectricity and boasts an astonishing array of state of the art Victorian gadgetry such as telephones, a lift and a Turkish bath suite.

The vast estate has more than 30 miles of footpaths and lakeside walks along its five lakes. The estate was planted by Armstrong with over 7 million trees and the gardens also boast one of Europe’s largest rock gardens.

NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
For those seeking the cultural and retail pleasures of a city, Newcastle upon Tyne is just an hour’s drive away. Newcastle is often placed in the country’s top five cities to visit and with its busy shopping area, galleries and museums and its impressive quayside area with bars, restaurants and cultural venues, it’s not hard to see why.

MORPETH 
For a more sedate shopping experience, the market town of Morpeth is a 45-minute drive away. Combining beauty and history, the town offers a relaxing day trip to browse around a wide range of shops, from high street regulars, niche brands and unique independent retailers. The 13th century chantry houses both a museum and an arts and crafts centre and there are beautiful walks to be had in Carlisle Park.

Master Room
The two Master rooms, Middlehurst and Fern, are the two largest rooms in the house. Both feature king-size beds that can be made into twins. Middlehurst can be let in conjuction with Blue making it perfect for families.

Acorn Superior Room
There are three rooms at this level, that all have king-size beds which can be made up as twins. Lake is the quietest room in the house, Acorn is a very light room with a view of Rutland Water and Lotus enjoys the same view.

When Hambleton Hall was first imagined, Rutland was unheard of as destination for a luxury hotel break, despite its attractive market towns, sandstone houses, hunting and shooting pursuits. AN EDIBLE GARDEN
Aaron’s passion for using exciting ingredients, cooked simply with striking presentation has led him to grow as much of his own produce as possible on site for the ultimate in freshness, taste and quality.

The 1-acre kitchen garden at Hambleton Hall is bordered on the south side by a 2-metre high sandstone wall where the peaches, figs and apples thrive. This provides shelter from the wind, protection from pests and it radiates retained heat during the long summer days.

Given the English climate, Aaron and his team of gardeners concentrate their efforts on delicate products which taste infinitely better when consumed immediately.

These include courgettes, tomatoes, beans, peaches, strawberries, currants, gooseberries, leeks, cauliflowers, radish, beetroots, carrots, sweetcorn, cucumbers, lettuce and a wide variety of herbs. Asparagus, kale, wild garlic, watercress, rhubarb, elderflower and peas grow too.

In 2019 Aaron redesigned the 1-acre garden to incorporate a new greenhouse, raised beds, fruit trees and a compost. During the redesign process and as part of his every day coaching and training of his brigade, Aaron teaches the younger chefs how to get the most out of the garden.

LOCAL PRODUCERS
Creativity is in perpetual motion in the Hambleton kitchen. Aaron, Charlie and James write the daily menus between 7am and midday depending on the unique combination of the freshest ingredients that arrive that morning.

The chefs’ foragers and farmers appear at the kitchen door in person offering incredible local ingredients from blewits and puffballs to salsify, apples or Jerusalem artichokes, quince or crab apples, sea vegetables or zander, woodcock or teal.

The chefs will unite these new finds with existing combinations to create recipe evolutions each day. Dishes such as breast of Merrifield duck with watermelon, feta and endive, grouse with blackberry sauce and traditional accompaniments, roast mallard with corn and a pie of its own leg meat, roast pheasant with Jerusalem artichoke and truffle, hare wellington with root vegetables and a prune and Armagnac sauce.

Hambleton’s long standing suppliers save their best for us as we have facilitated their business, helped them to expand and with whom they have grown together over the decades. Some grow some ingredients only for Hambleton, such is the loyalty and friendship they have nurtured over the years.

WINE
Hambleton’s sommelier Dominique Baduel comes from the south-west corner of France, where his father dealt in the local cheeses. Together with Tim Hart, he selects the wines that take up the 400 bin list. Truly passionate about his craft, Dom needs little encouragement to take guests on a tour of his cellar, where you can see a few thousand bottles waiting for your summons.

Tim and Dominique’s aim for Hambleton’s wine experience is to find interesting choices from a wide range of growing areas. They are prejudiced in favour of small producers and against big brands and believe that their greatest successes with clients often involves introducing wine lovers to something new.

The Old World sections such as Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Rhône red wines can be relied upon to include quite a few mature bottles that have been cellared at Hambleton for many years.

Most new wines on the list are favourites that we have been tasting lately. They are often wines which will be listed on our first page “wines of the moment” and they may reflect a variety of grapes and represent good value.

Wines which are removed from the list are wines which we cannot buy anymore because of vintage changes or because the no longer are to our liking. In the case of very fine wines, specific vintages may be very difficult to buy and may incur a considerable increase in price, therefore we might look for this wine in a different, and often younger version.

THE DINING ROOM
At Hambleton Hall, we offer exceptional wining and dining in our award-winning restaurant. Michelin Star chef, Aaron Patterson and his highly skilled team work with fabulous ingredients, where possible local in origin, to produce dishes with a strong seasonal bias.

This season delivers rich and diverse ingredients which convey colour and flavour to each plate. The new dish of Poached tail of langoustine with fennel and Exmoor caviar this season resembles a work of art on the table. To whet your appetite see our recent sample menus.

SIGNATURE DISHES
Signature dishes are the most enduring, the most popular and the most recommended dishes. While the chefs change the menus twice a day to use the best produce and keep pace with culinary trends, signature dishes have the power to remain or return each season for loyal diners. Signature dishes create tremendous loyalty and guests like to share these on Instagram, which adds further to their popularity.

Hambleton Hall is renowned for serving the best quality game dishes throughout the year. Some of the most requested dishes are Loin of rabbit wrapped in Parma ham with pea and mint risotto and Pheasant pithivier with root vegetables.

Vegetarian and vegan diners are well catered for. Some of the most popular choices are the Terrine of carrot with star anise ice cream and the Garden courgette flower filled with mousse, chanterelle mushrooms and grappa jus.

No Michelin star restaurant is complete without exemplary fish dishes and the signatures here include Fillet of wild turbot with sea vegetables and Cornish crab, radish, ginger and yuzu.

With an entire pastry kitchen creating all the sweet and savoury items from scratch daily including the delicious canapes served with an aperitif and the petit fours with coffee, it is no wonder that desserts are incredibly important.

The Hambleton tiramisu has been on the menu for over a decade thanks to its popularity, although loyalists for the newer White peach cheesecake are equally enthusiastic.

THE HALL
Hambleton Hall is one of Britain’s finest country house hotels, and enjoys membership of both the Relais & Châteaux and Pride of Britain collection of luxury hotels.

GROUNDS & GARDENS
The gardens and grounds cover some 17 acres and include a warm south-facing terrace where the “Sitooterie” provides shelter for a contemplative cigar smoker or reader. The Parterre, designed by Neil Hewertson in 1995, provides year-round pleasure with architectural plants and shrubs.

Owner Tim Hart is a keen gardener and is especially proud of Cork oaks, pines and a wealth of other trees and shrubs planted on his watch. Tulips are a great favourite and other spring bulbs can be enjoyed from late March.

A walled kitchen garden is cultivated intensively for herbs, salad vegetables and soft fruit. In summer, courgette flowers are sent daily to the kitchen to form part of one of Aaron Patterson’s favourite dishes. The garden offers a number of secluded corners where one can sit and enjoy spectacular views and opens on to the south-facing Park and Rutland Water.
