Fowey Hall, now an impressive luxury family hotel, was originally built as a beautiful Victorian mansion by local resident Charles Hanson. Today, the building retains the unique character of a coastal manor with the relaxed atmosphere of a country house.

Today, Fowey Hall Hotel represents the best of contemporary, child friendly luxury. To us, this means carefree fun and relaxation in a beautiful setting. In fact, we’ll think of everything so that you can simply enjoy your time together.

We provide beach and pool equipment, fresh morning and evening milk, and complimentary fruit for children to snack on. For each day of your stay, enjoy one and a half hours of free childcare in our Ofsted-registered Den.

When it comes to days out in Cornwall, we’ve got suggestions aplenty. An information station at reception offers tips and guides to exploring Fowey, including running routes and tide times.

In typical country house style, the hall has strong links to the local area. Our Head Chef works closely with Cornish producers to use quality ingredients, from freshly caught seafood to award-winning ice cream.

So whenever you want to eat, whether as a family or a romantic twosome, sit back and take your time. It’s precious, after all, and here you’ve got plenty.

A Victorian show piece
Charles Augustin Hanson was born in Polruan, across the estuary from Fowey, in 1846. After leaving Fowey School in 1862, he emigrated to Canada to seek his fortune in the lumber trade.

Hanson commissioned the mansion, now a listed building, on his triumphant return as a wealthy man in 1889. A plot of land was purchased from the nearby Rashleigh family (owners of Daphne du Maurier’s Menabilly), and a decade later Fowey Hall was complete.

As the 20th century progressed, Charles Hanson dedicated himself to politics, becoming MP for Bodmin in 1916 and Lord Mayor of London – and a baronet – in 1917.

Fowey Hall welcomed guests from all over the world as Sir Charles cultivated leaders in society and commerce. Some visitors, however, were neither welcome nor friendly: in the early 1900s, Sir Charles’ Rolls Royce was set alight by suffragettes while in the Coach House.

After his death in 1922, Fowey Hall passed through the family until being sold in the late 1950s. In 1968, the house became a hotel for walkers and bird lovers under the Countrywide Holiday Association.

Luxury Family Hotels took over Fowey Hall at the beginning of 1998. The first eight months of the year were spent undertaking extensive refurbishments and restoration.

The ground floor remains largely in its original layout, with the library, morning, drawing and billiard rooms and the dining area returned to their original uses.

Family Rooms
Our rooms are cool, contemporary and luxurious, yet perfectly decked out to accommodate children, grown-ups and dogs.

Soak in the bathtub, sink into sofas, gaze upon sea views and sprawl out in spacious suites. Enjoy contemporary style and true comfort, discovering quirky designer touches like handmade turned oak beds, bespoke wallpaper and restored antique furniture.

Opt for bunk beds, Z-beds, cots or sofa beds – our 36 rooms include 12 family rooms and plenty of interconnecting bedrooms, so you can choose the perfect accommodation to suit your family’s needs.

Large Family Suites
Ideal for larger families who’d like a little space, these suites sleep two adults and three children, with rooms overlooking the garden and out towards the estuary.

Located within the impressive main house and garden wing, they offer a quirky mix of classic and contemporary, with sink-down-deep beds and lots of natural light. Large family suites can be set up with a full baby kit and all the equipment you need for a luxurious stay; just let us know how we can help.

Family Double Room
Located in the impressive main house, these rooms have a style that matches contemporary comfort with period elegance.

Perfect for baby-friendly holidays and toddler-friendly holidays, these family rooms have extra space for either a child’s bed or a cot. If you’ll be travelling with little ones, just let us know – we can provide baby equipment and everything you need for a stress-free stay.

Standard Double Room
Located in the mansion house, our standard double rooms are contemporary in style and perfect for relaxed romantic breaks in Cornwall. These rooms feature bespoke handmade oak headboards, vintage furniture and a flat-screen smart TV.

Fowey Hall Restaurant
Excellent Cornish cuisine is at the heart of our hospitality. Fresh seafood is landed by local fishermen; aged rib-eye steaks are sourced from farms on our doorstep.

Our chefs create seasonal menus using the best local ingredients, complemented by Cornish-inspired flavours such as samphire from the beaches and herbs foraged from our kitchen garden.

From lazy breakfasts and light lunches to family feasts and beach-ready picnics, we’re all about flexibility. Our restaurants and menus are just as appealing to children as they are to adults, whether little ones favour boiled eggs and burgers, or wholesome, organic baby food.

Our chef and suppliers
Our Head Chef Wesley Pratt has over 20 years’ experience working in the kitchens of luxury hotels and local restaurants – but as a parent, he also knows how to cater for the foodie demands of the whole family.

Wes and his team have got to know our local suppliers, meaning that only the freshest and most flavoursome ingredients feature on our menus. Seafood is sourced from a small family business, Fish For Thought, while our eggs are laid by free-range hens at Colin Carter’s Eggs, near Truro.

Award-winning artisan ice cream comes from Treleavens, churned at Tretoil Farm in the north Cornish countryside. We also serve the finest Cornish tipples: Camel Valley wines, Fowey Brewery ales and Tarquin’s gin, distilled in the southwest.

Flexible dining
We like to make mealtimes easy and convenient for families. There’s an all-day dining menu to choose from at your leisure, and our chef can provide fresh, pureed baby food from 7am-9pm. You’re also welcome to have meals delivered to your room, with room service available from 7.30am to 9.15pm.

During the day
Breakfast is very much a family affair. Even the youngest guests can help themselves to the buffet and pile their plates with cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, pastries and muffins. In addition to the continental buffet, our plated options are designed to fortify all ages for an active, fun-packed day ahead.

After breakfast, the Morning Room Bar is the perfect place for a quiet coffee with a newspaper – or take your drinks al fresco and watch the children playing in the gardens from our outdoor terrace.

Lunch is informal, with a full children’s menu and a lighter menu for parents. At Sunday lunchtime, we pull out the stops for a traditional three-course roast, which is also very popular with locals. If you’d rather be out exploring during the daytime, we can pack a picnic for the beach or suggest the best local places to eat.

At Fowey Hall, afternoon tea is seriously special, with handmade sandwiches and scones, sweet treats and loose-leaf teas.

In the evening
Because we know young diners often like to eat early, a children’s High Tea is served from 5pm-6pm daily. Or, if you prefer to sit down for dinner together, we offer a flexible all-day menu, which means you can grab a bite whenever it suits you.

Once the children are tucked up in bed, catch up on time as a couple. Tuck into Cornish cuisine, admire the view, and chat at the bar. If you’d rather eat informally, we offer light bites to enjoy on the outdoor terrace – the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the River Fowey.

Already settled in front of the lounge fire? Our focus on casual dining means you can enjoy dinner wherever and however you like. As the evening goes on, get comfy with a drink or head over to the bar.

If you like to keep it simple, we offer excellent local beers and artisan spirits, or you might prefer to try something new, choosing from a menu of creative cocktails and mocktails.

Wind in the Willows inspired Afternoon Teas
Join us for Wind in the Willows-inspired Afternoon Tea at Fowey Hall. This special tea will be served throughout the spring and summer until the end of October. Available to book now to enjoy in our hotel or on the terrace in the late Summer sunshine.

Fowey Hall’s Afternoon Tea theme for this summer has been inspired by Kenneth Grahame’s children’s classic, Wind in the Willows, and features some of the favourite food of the famous characters including Mr Toad, Badger, Ratty and Mole.

Afternoon Tea for Adults
The Wind in the Willows adult menu includes a selection of finger sandwiches as well as delights including a truffled cheddar and ham scotch egg with pickles, freshly made savoury and sweet scones, and a number of desserts including Ratty’s lemonade posset and Badger’s chocolate and berry swiss roll.

Upgrade the Adult’s afternoon tea to include a glass of award-winning Hambledon English sparking wine.

Afternoon Tea for Children
The children’s tea includes a selection of sandwiches and crudités, ‘Toad in the Hall’ Sausage Tartlet, and a special creation to delight little guests: Mole’s boiled egg and soldiers…..with a twist.

Served in an egg shell, the ‘boiled egg’ has been reimagined. Instead of egg white, children will be served a mascarpone whipped mousse with the egg’s yolk being replaced by a mouth-watering mango gel!

No boiled eggs would be served without soldiers and for an indulgent twist, children will be able to enjoy a chocolate pastry finger which can be dipped in for a total sensory and taste sensation! Squeals of delight and laughter are expected all round!

Sunday Lunch
Join us for a seasonal, locally sourced Sunday lunch: the highlight of any weekend. Served every Sunday from 12pm to 3pm, our lunch menu features the best fresh, local and in-season produce, updated weekly.

On the menu
Our focus on local foods means that Fowey Hall’s chefs work with nearby suppliers and producers, many of whom are embracing new farming techniques to remain as sustainable as possible.

Highlights include Lesquite Farm beef, Good Earth Growers veg, Cornish cheeses, and Treleavens ice cream. We’re also pairing Sapling Vodka and The Pickle House tomato juice to create the ultimate Bloody Mary.

For every bottle of vodka that we buy, Sapling plants a tree; making this a climate-positive vodka that truly gives back to the environment. Into the mix also goes award-winning spiced tomato juice from The Pickle House: a feisty and fresh juice with a pickle twist, hand-produced and bottled on a farm in Suffolk.

Free childcare
To help guarantee some good-quality grown-up time with your meal, we’re also offering an hour of complimentary childcare. Just give us a call when booking your lunch to arrange this, as childcare is pre-bookable and subject to availability.

For older children, there’ll be a film screening (unsupervised), meaning they can bag some quiet time away without the little ones.

Family Friendly Spa
Bucking the trend of adult-only hotel spas, Fowey Hall is home to a unique, family-friendly spa. Here you can enjoy a family swim and chill out with the kids on the terrace. Or book the little ones into our crèche and indulge in some me-time, with a spa treatment and a dip in the sea-view hot tub.

The swimming pool and hot tub are open daily from 8am to 8pm. Spa treatments are available Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm, and Sundays from 10am to 5pm. The pool is available to the whole family, while our treatment areas offer a tranquil environment where adults can relax and be pampered.

Sea-view yoga
Gift yourself some luxurious time-out to practice the ancient art of yoga, here in the tranquil settings of the hotel. Yoga can be a total wellbeing workout, bringing balance and calm to the physical, mental and emotional levels of our being.

Bonnie, our in-house yoga teacher, has been qualified since 2007 and now has over 1,500 hours with the British Wheel of Yoga and Yoga Alliance.

She is trained to mindfully teach: Hatha (dynamic or gentle movement), Yin (static poses), Yoga Nidra (relaxation), Pranayama (breathwork), and Meditations to all ranges and abilities, including complete beginners and those with injuries.

Bonnie loves to teach from the classic yoga traditions, combining an awareness of body, breath and energy levels to develop the practice of mindfulness and help an individual find their own strength and spaciousness.

A private yoga session with an experienced teacher can be an instrumental move if either taking your first step or looking to deepen your own practice. It can provide a therapeutic, sustainable strategy for working with specific ailments or for developing a daily personal practice.
