Guana remains the most unspoiled jewel of the British Virgin Islands. Our 850 acres, seven beaches, mountains, gardens, organic orchard, dozens of hiking trails, and even our flock of flamingos are the exclusive domain of a handful of guests for the duration of their stay.

In this setting, where the sparkling Caribbean meets the vast Atlantic, you’ll find first-class dining, accommodations, and service in a tradition of low-key luxury perfected through nearly a century of family stewardship.

Our intimate hotel is built of native stone and coral, on the foundations of an 18th century Quaker estate. Sprinkled along a scenic ridge and cooled by gentle tradewinds, each of our 18 unique rooms and villas offers a commanding views of the Caribbean and the Atlantic.

Guana’s understated elegance and absolute privacy (only registered guests are permitted) have long made it a hideaway retreat for luminaries from the worlds of art, literature, politics, and industry.

Guana’s Rich History
Accepting our first guests nearly a century ago, Guana has been a welcoming retreat for families and couples, writers, actors and musicians, and global leaders in business and politics.

Over the decades, it has provided the locations for notable productions from the 1958 classic film Virgin Island starring Sidney Poitier and John Cassavetes, to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. The “Queen’s Terrace,” named in honor of the Queen Mother for her visit to Guana in March 19, 1964, is where guests still gather to wait for the elusive “green flash.”

Anegada Villa
Located on the scenic ridge, Anegada is a three bedroom Villa that has stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Enjoy the expansive views from the 3 terraces or relax in the private pool overlooking White Bay and Guana’s Sugarloaf Mountain.

North Beach Villa
The only accommodation on secluded North Beach, this one or two bedroom Villa is a world unto itself. With its own private pool and sundeck nestled into the dune above Guana’s dramatic North Bay, this Villa is the most private setting on the Island.

Jost Villa
Nestled into the mountainside, Jost is Guana’s largest and most luxurious villa. Choose to enjoy idyllic views from the living room with vaulted ceiling, dining room, or the expansive terraces with an infinity pool that overlooks both the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Jost is available as a one, two, or three bedroom villa with additional kids bedroom on request.

Sea View Cottages
Enjoy the comfort of cottages that are elegantly decorated in traditional Caribbean textiles, finished with handcrafted furnishings and original artwork that includes watercolors painted on Island in the 1930s by Louis Bigelow.

Our hilltop rooms are naturally cooled by a gentle breeze through the wooden louvres, and air conditioning if needed. Each cottage has its own private terrace with stunning views of the Caribbean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, or both.

Dining on the Island
Guana’s internationally trained chefs create exquisite, farm-to-table cuisine, bolstered by produce from our own organic orchard, and breads and muffins from our ovens. All meals and wines, as well as snacks like tropical fruit and fresh-baked cookies, are included.

The Orchard
Our organic Orchard provides wholesome produce for guests at every meal, and reduces reliance on imported food. Here you’ll find papaya, passion fruit, banana, coconut, pineapple, mango, wax apple, plantain, pomegranate, lime, grapefruit, orange, carambola, breadfruit and sugar cane along with micro greens and other leafy vegetables. Our staff will gladly arrange a visit to the Orchard at any time during your stay.

With over 40 different varieties of fruit, vegetables, and flowers, the Orchard provides a large portion of the fresh ingredients used by our chefs each day. Staples like papaya, banana, and passion fruit grace the breakfast table, along with fresh eggs from our free range chickens.

Lunch salads include fresh tomatoes, lettuces, seasonal peppers, and cucumbers. And dinners feature Orchard-grown herbs and spices and our own microgreens. More exotic items like Indonesian Spinach, Calalou, and Wax Apple inspire unique, Guana-created recipes.

The Clubhouse
You’ll be greeted on the hilltop with a tropical drink, a cool towel to refresh you from your journey, and a chance to familiarize yourself with the Island and its many pleasures. 18th century Quakers called it The Great House. Today, it’s The Clubhouse where you’ll gather for cocktails and dine on romantic candlelit terraces.

If you like, you may choose to socialize with other guests in our comfortable Living Room, or just relax on a jasmine scented terrace and count the falling stars. Browse the Library to find a good book. Or write one yourself. Our guests have been known to do both.

Hibiscus Spa

With a full selection of luxurious and holistic treatments, from the classic manicure or facial to hot stone massage and aromatherapy, the Spa sits just steps from White Bay Beach where nothing will distract you but the sounds of the sea and the gentle breezes.

We also offer unique treatments featuring specialized ingredients form our organic Orchard, such as a body scrub using freshly picked passion fruit and lemon basil.

Weddings in British Virgin Islands
Start with a ceremony in the morning sun on magnificent White Bay Beach, a perfect sunset on the Queen’s Terrace overlooking the Sea, or a moonlit night in the fragrant Garden of Eden. For the wedding feast, a beach banquet that begins at dusk, continues with dancing on the sand to live music, and ends with a nighttime swim under a shimmering canopy of stars.

Our staff will take care of everything, working with you to plan your wedding to the smallest detail. Come as a couple, a small group, or bring friends and family and take over the Island for an unforgettable experience.

For celebrations like weddings, family reunions or special birthdays — or just for fun — you and up to 35 of your luckiest friends or family can have the Island to yourselves. Our staff will work with you in advance to arrange every detail of your “private island takeover.” With no marina or other public facilities, all 850 acres will be yours for as long as you like.

White Bay Beach
Guana’s largest beach is a half-mile stretch of glistening powder-white sand — the beach you see in daydreams of the Caribbean. Swim or snorkel in the clear blue water.

Take out a small sailboat, kayak, windsurfer, or paddle-board. Grab a rod and fish for Tarpon and Bonefish from the dock. Or just relax on a lounge or hammock with a frozen Guana Bushwacker in hand and watch the pelicans dive.

Bigelow Beach
Our boatmen will whisk you off to this lovely beach — named for the Bigelow Family who founded the hotel in 1934 — for a castaway picnic and afternoon of private sunbathing. While there you will want to snorkel the crystal waters and view ancient rock formations around Monkey Point.

Harris Beach
A short walk over the rock outcroppings at the end of White Bay Beach will take you to this “vest pocket” white sand beach you’ll likely share with no one one, as you search for treasure said to have been buried by pirates in the 1800s.

Muskmelon Beach & Crab Cove
Midway stops on the hike to Chicken Rock, these two secluded beaches, nestled in Guana’s north-western bay, are unique spots for snorkeling and shelling.

North Beach
The surf at this impressive beach on the Island’s Atlantic side is as ideal for beach-combing as it is for kite-boarding.

The Nature Sanctuary
Our perennial focus on nature and conservation is evident the moment you approach the Island from the sea, since 99% of our 850 acres remain undeveloped and undisturbed. From the time the Island’s boutique hotel was established in 1934, building has been kept to a small envelope on the ridge overlooking the Caribbean and the Atlantic.

As part of the Guana Science Program, the Island has hosted hundreds of academic and scientific non-profit researchers, drawn to its unparalleled diversity and history.

The Program has successfully reintroduced once-common native species such as the Stout Rock Iguana (from eight adult iguanas introduced in 1983 to over 300 today), Caribbean Roseate Flamingo, Red-legged Tortoise, Bridled Quail Dove, and White-Crowned Pigeon.

Plants like the Virgin Islands Euphorb and Hohenberg’s Ground Bromeliad have also been nurtured and studied. Dozen of previously undiscovered species of insects, plants, and sea life — including shrimp and mollusks, such as the “Guana Land Snail,” have been found here.

To study the unique characteristics of Guana’s marine life, The Marine Science Program was launched in 1992 and is now one of the Caribbean’s most comprehensive programs for monitoring coral reef conditions, replanting hundreds of fragments of Elkhorn coral, ensuring that Guana’s three distinct reef areas will remain home to over 125 species of fish and other marine life.

To support the BVI community, the Island has dedicated a substantial portion of its revenue over the years to local organizations including the Youth Empowerment Project, the first and largest facility in the BVI devoted to teaching and providing opportunity for young BVIslanders. Guests are invited to visit the YEP facility in Tortola and see their support in action.

Activities On Land
We offer tennis, volleyball, badminton, croquet, ping-pong and even bocce, lawn bowling and horseshoes at the beach. Of course, if you’d rather not expend that much energy, there are lounges, hammocks and our private beach bar to entertain you.

Activities On The Sea
A fleet of beach toys like stand-up paddle boards, paddle boats, kayaks, sunfish and hobie-cat, and snorkeling gear stand at the ready. Further adventures include scuba, water-skiing, kite surfing, local and deep-sea fishing and wakeboarding.

Hiking
Explore the ruins of the sugar plantation and stone foundations of the Lake House, home to one of Guana’s early Quaker families. Reach the 806-foot summit of Sugarloaf Mountain for commanding views of the surrounding islands. Or visit Long Man’s Point, descend the stone staircase cut into the cliff and swim in the pools below.

Excursions

If you would like to explore the world beyond Guana, we can plan a day or half-day boat trip to our sister island, Norman Island (Robert Louis Stevenson’s original Treasure Island) for lunch, or any other BVI destination including the legendary Baths at Virgin Gorda.

Snorkeling & Scuba

Snorkeling opportunities abound, especially at Guana’s northern tip, which is a Protected Fisheries Area. High-quality snorkel gear is available to you at all times. For Scuba, our dive boat partner will pick you up on our dock, for fascinating excursions like diving the wreck of the Rhone.
