Here, in one of the most impressive sceneries between the Zillertal Alps and the Dolomites, it is particularly important to us as a responsible family business to make sure all of our activities and the way we operate takes sustainability into consideration.

In our 4-star hotel in South Tyrol we preserve what is regional and support local businesses. All the furniture in our rooms & suites have been made by South Tyrolean carpenters. Our cuisine too is based around sustainable produce from local farms, alpine pastures and Alpine dairies.

Our aromatic cheese and dairy produce comes from the alpine dairy in Brunico, fresh fish is from Forellenhof, lamb from Hollechnerhof and local game from the woodlands in the region – all this is enhanced with herbs from our own herb garden and from the neighbouring Getzlechenhof.

In the hotel we use a computer-controlled, individual room regulator system. Using local biomass from the district heating supply spares greenhouse gases and CO2.

LED and energy-saving lights and individual refrigeration for our mini-bars also contributes to the concept of sustainability. Meticulous waste recycling and efficient resource planning underlines the holistic manner in which we run our business.

In the heart of South Tyrol, between the Zillertal Alps and the world-renowned Dolomites, in the Ahrntal Valley – a valley of wonders, special features and stories. Discover them – in the museums, exhibitions and during events which celebrate our traditions.

Indeed the natural surroundings themselves provide the most beautiful setting for cultural enjoyment. Discover the Museum of minerals or the Messner Mountain Museum, which is wholly dedicated to the inspiration provided by the mountains.

In the Crib museum South Tyrolean handcrafts are presented in an atmospheric manner, while in the Museum of popular art in Teodone, culture and tradition are tangible. The highlight of your journey into the past will doubtless be to see the legendary man from the ice, who you can gaze at in astonishment in Bolzano in the Ötzi Museum.

You always get to discover something new and you can allow yourself to be captivated by Alpine history, which can barely be experienced in a more authentic way, or be more connected to the natural surroundings anywhere else.

TURES CASTLE
Even today people in the Ahrntal Valley talk about the secrets and legends of one of the most impressive castles in South Tyrol – Tures castle.

Walls metres high, built by hand – stone by stone -, the tower which in times past served as a defence and the giant drawbridge are what set this impressive monument high above Tures apart. By way of contrast a well-tended garden graces this stone fortification – charming and romantic at the same time.

Did an intrepid knight from the lower nobility court a damsel here once upon a time? The gentlemen of Tures were known as the free aristocrats and they achieved a great deal in the state of Tyrol, but the castle feel into different hands in 1340.

The end was so mysterious and it is so lovely to enjoy a guided tour of Tures Castle which has excellently preserved working rooms, a blacksmith’s workshop in the courtyard, a cold store, defensive corridors, former great hall and a bunker to protect the castle inhabitants. Follow in the footsteps of history.

In the castle, as well as there being rooms where you can stroll around freely in, you can also go on a guided tour of the courtroom, the infirmary, a sublime knights’ hall, armoury chamber, a castle chapel, spiritual rooms, library, a late Gothic administrative office and the torture chamber.

Visitors find the torture chamber and the knights’ hall in particular inspiring. Choose from an individual sightseeing tour, or an informative guided tour through the chambers of this wonderful castle.

Tures Castle also tempts you to enjoy cultural events and interesting exhibits, while throughout the year delicious foods and regional specialities are served in the castle inn. Enter into the magic of Tures Castle.

PREDOI MINES
We have always been fascinated by the undiscovered, the hidden and the seemingly unattainable. In Predoi Mines you get right up close to this alluring force. Venture into the inner depths of the mountains in the Ahrntal Valley – where an impressive underground adventure awaits.

Since 1400 the Rötbach Waterfall bestowed upon the region an economic boom thanks to the mining of copper ore, which was smelted and processed by the dynamic South Tyrolean people. The distinctive malleability of the copper meant it could be processed into wire which was required throughout the country and beyond.

But in 1893 mining operations were increasingly reduced since the copper stocks were coming to an end. Nonetheless mining never lost its magic over the centuries.

In 1957 a few visionaries decided to re-open the caves and to build up business again with fine metals – unfortunately this euphoria lasted only a few years. Since the 1990s the St. Ignaz Erbstollen have been show caves and invite you to come and explore this impressive realm.

Step in and be amazed! Take a seat in one of the two wagons which take you from Grubenbahnhof right inside the mountains. Via an old rope winch you proceed through the 250 metre circuit through the caves, where you get to see and sense what life in the mines was like at that time.

Guided by experts you get to experience what it was like in the cave – and you get see how much water and the ton-weight of cargo the miners brought to the surface. Since it is cool in the mountain we recommend that all visitors bring warm clothing. Safety jackets and helmets are of course provided free of charge in Predoi Mines.

CADIPIETRA GRANARY
Experience history up close – in the Cadipietra granary in the Ahrntal Valley. In the former Predoi copper mine the Cadipietra granary welcomes visitors with a very special atmosphere. Used decades ago as a food warehouse, today it is a mining museum, recounting what life was like working under ground in times past.

The collection exhibited is, for the most part, from Count Enzenberg, who helped the Kornkasten granary out with a loan. In the middle of the 15th century the Cadipietra granary was a store for all the requisite goods used for mining operations.

These were raw materials such as grain, lighting for the caves and of course tools for the miners who proceeded into the mountain with gumption and courage to mine the sought-after copper ore. In the museum itself numerous exhibits recount the history of mining in Predoi and enable you to become immersed in a long forgotten past.

The virtual ‘wonder chamber’ in the mining museum displays the complete Enzenberg collection. Glean useful information about individual exhibits and about the history of mining in Predoi.

The philosophy of life which the miners shared at that time is unexpected and surprising – there was a special mysteriousness which went with life underground and the mountain workers were frequently a bit superstitious due to the continual danger to their lives.

A refurbished painting in the Cadipietra granary reveals all the mining structures, which are shown artistically and in full detail.

Films and audio material also provide information about the difficult everyday life of the miners and their challenging tasks on the mountain. The high risk copper trading industry in the Ahrntal Valley, which claimed hundreds of lives, is authentically revealed.

The exhibition combines art, handcrafts and music and therefore provides an action-packed experience for all the family. Take yourself on a voyage through time – in the Cadipietra granary.

DIAMONDS OF THE ALPS
It was a passion for what is rare that inspired collectors here to open the biggest mineral exhibit in the Eastern Alps here in St. Johann in the Ahrntal Valley. Artur Kirchler, passionate mountaineer and explorer had a great dream – and he did indeed put this into action.

Over 1000 individual exhibits, in part over 30 million years old, are on show in the Museum of minerals in the Ahrntal Valley. The unique location of the Ahrntal Valley between the Hohe Tauern, the Zillertal Alps and the Dolomites is like a treasure trove of unusual finds, which are exhibited here with an attention to detail and informatively.

Huge smoky quartz in South Tyrol are shimmering and beautiful; these very impressive items in this exquisite collection are a real highlight in the Museum of minerals. Excellent recreations of alpine clefts from the mines in Predoi await you here too.

In the multimedia room everything revolves around how minerals are formed, their occurrences and variety in the mountains. Discover this somewhat different museum with all the family.

Small, yet perfectly formed, elegant and planned with attention paid to the very last detail, it is a gem in the Ahrntal Valley, home to our hotels in South Tyrol. The Museum of minerals in the Ahrntal Valley is open throughout the year.

CRIB MUSEUM LUTAGO
In a place which appreciates handcrafted items and which can look back upon a long Christian tradition, is where you’ll find the Crib museum Lutago. An artistic eye, skilful hands and the ability to be able to implement even the smallest detail carefully, demonstrates a high degree of wood craft.

The crib museum is an exhibition room, an artists’ studio and artisan workshop at the same time. Here you get to watch how the loveliest cribs, sculptures and rooms are created, and you can become a part of this tradition.

With the crib museum, the vision of the Gartner family was to create a place of faith and of spirituality at the same time – and an inspiring atmosphere was the result. Even the reception room impresses with its realistic replica of a Tyrolean barn, which has been made from old wood from the dilapidated Holzlechnhof.

Behind this, there is a variety of different cribs in North Tyrolean and also South Tyrolean style – which are of course elaborately set up, painted and lit up. Artists from South Tyrol and Austria have enhanced the pieces, which are there waiting to be discovered by you.

Crib and set designers from across the region have set up an exhibit which stuns, impresses and is known far beyond its borders. Particularly eye-catching is the large Oriental crib, which is accentuated by atmospheric music and plays of light.

New in the Crib museum is the so-called ‘Gloriole’ – a room which has an ornate ceiling, designed to be like a gloriole. Lots of new works have been positioned here and they are sure to amaze you.

The 70 m² walk-in crib in the basement of the museum is a highlight too. Life-size figures and an enchanting starry sky make for a wonderful ambience – immerse yourself in the scenery of this piece.

The Room of Silence in the museum is the replica of a Gothic snug – experience the year 1560 – the barrel vault is impressive and well worth seeing. Your sightseeing tour of the museums is led by the visionary Paul Gartner.

He recounts information, interesting facts and astonishing things about the individual pieces. A film at the start of the tour provides you with an introduction to the realm of crib art. In short, a visit to the Crib museum Lutago, close to our hotels in South Tyrol is worthwhile at any time.

THE MESSNER MOUNTAIN MUSEUM
Reinhold Messner – mountaineering legend, author and adventurer – announced the South Tyrol mountains to the entire world. With his Messner Mountain Museum he succeeded in presenting a new concept, which brings together five energy-filled places and showcases them in all their special ways.

Five museums, the Ripa in Brunico Castle, Firmian at Sigmundskron Castle near Bolzano, Ortles in Solda sull’Ortles, Dolomites between Pieve di Cadore and Cortina d’Ampezzo and Juval at Juval Castle in the Vinschgau, are among these exceptional encounters.

Ripa in Brunico, just a few minutes’ drive from our hotels in South Tyrol, is an exhibition about the mountain peoples of Asia, Africa, South America and Europe. There is particular emphasis upon the culture of the people, religions and tourism in these different latitudes.

Films, authentic dwellings as well as a variety of exhibits, demonstrating the heritage on the mountain, distinguish the multi-media set-up. The core of the Messner Mountain Museum is situated in Bolzano at Sigmundskron Castle.

The conflict between people and mountain is in the focus here in the skilful art installations and artefacts. In contrast, in Ortles in Solda sull’Ortles the element ice is to the fore in the exhibit, in the Dolomites in Cortina it is the rocks, while Juval recounts the mysterious mountain.

All five museums are located in the midst of a breath-taking natural setting and are connected to the hiking trails, which connect all five meeting places to one another. Head out on a voyage of discovery which may prove to be a profound experience. In the footsteps of the spiritual Reinhold Messner you get to see a previously unknown side to the mountains.

With its vision of bringing the mountains and people closer together, it also successfully incorporates questions regarding environmental protection and South Tyrolean politics. Experience these five unique meeting places for yourself in the Messner Mountain Museum.

THE ÖTZI MUSEUM
Ötzi, the man from the ice, is one of the most significant and best known mummies in the world. Discovered here in the glaciers in the region, this contemporary witness still holds many puzzles today. Countless stories and suppositions are intertwined regarding Ötzi, who – protected by the eternal ice for millennia – was able to be salvaged practically intact.

This ground-breaking find can be seen in the Ötzi Museum in Bolzano. His clothing and equipment are also excellently preserved and provide an insight into life between 3350 and 3100 B.C. It is believed that Ötzi died from an injury sustained from an arrow head in his left shoulder – nonetheless, there are still a great deal of stories about the death of this man.

Researchers from across the globe have attempted to analyse all the available facts and reconstruct a plausible cause, for the mummy from Similaun captures the imagination of experts and visitors today as much as it did back then.

The Ötzi Museum is perfectly suited to day trips around our hotels in South Tyrol. Here it is not just the life of the glacier mummy itself which is shown in multimedia format, information is provided about the conservation techniques used and archaeological significance.

Head on a journey back through time when people still hunted with spears and the mountains and the natural surroundings were still completely unspoilt. Throughout the year as well as the permanent exhibition over three stages, numerous events and special exhibits take place.

Families get to enjoy special family guided tours. We are happy to provide you with information about your visit and about the best events and will organise your guided tour of the Ötzi Museum in South Tyrol.

Start your sightseeing tour in the closest big city, Brunico – renowned for its Old Town area, for its lovely little boutiques and inviting bars. Just a few minutes in the car takes you to Bressanone, a town which has two guises and is a historic stronghold in the north of the state.

In our capital Bolzano it is difficult to experience everything in one day – which is why we recommend the best spots for your excursion. Not far from Bolzano is Merano, an Alpine-Mediterranean town set in the midst of vineyards and with wonderfully designed gardens.

If you are eager to find out about how North Tyrolean people live and the cultural highlights this Alpine region has in store, then explore the capital of Tyrol, Innsbruck. Whatever town you choose, you will see, sense and taste a great deal – so, let’s make a beeline for the excursion destinations in South Tyrol!

BRUNICO
This lively town, characterised by its historic core and surrounded by the picturesque natural landscape of South Tyrol’s north, brings together the Pustertal, Ahrntal and Gadertal valleys. The coming together of urban cultural history with the traditions of the people who live there is what characterises the special atmosphere of this town.

Brunico is situated between the Zillertal Alps and the world-renowned Dolomites. A gem of Val Pusteria – as the town is seen by the people of South Tyrol – it offers plenty of variety, energised by numerous events and enjoys a wealth of attractive sights.

The town’s excellent restaurants are popular with all guests, as are the bars, pubs and discos, some of which are hip and take influence from Italian ‘Dolce Vita’.

Brunico is the cultural and also the economic hub of the northern part of South Tyrol – small, yet perfectly formed, boutiques and shops are densely packed in together, providing shopping fun and also tempting you to enjoy a leisurely stroll through the streets and alleys of the town.

With some 15,000 inhabitants Brunico is nonetheless one of the most significant towns in the state. The unique character of this destination has however been formed over the centuries. Arts and crafts in particular have a particular significance here and have, for a long time, enabled the town’s individual reputation to precede it.

Explore Brunico during a relaxing excursion – our hotels in South Tyrol are just a few minutes’ drive from this town in the Alps.

Start out on your excursion in the heart of Brunico and stroll along the alleys in the town. Discover the medieval style and the Marian columns, erected in the 17th century. The Old Town itself has numerous opportunities for enjoying yourself and for shopping.

Inspiring eye-catchers are the Baroque Santo Spirito Church, the gothic Ursuline Church and the Rain Church. The impressive Brunico Castle is certainly a decisive foundation block in the structure of the town.

Designed by Bressanone’s Bishop Count Bruno von Wullenstätten, who named the town, today it is a prominent monument which has a giant drawbridge, turrets and state rooms. The lovely castle also provides an impressive backdrop for the Messner Mountain Museum, an exhibition about the mountain peoples of the world.

For those of you who have an interest in culture we recommend a trip to the Town Museum. Where at one time the post horses stayed, today contemporary modern art adorns the sacred walls. Also pay a visit to the military cemetery in Brunico.

Some 800 valiant soldiers, who fell in the First World War have found an idyllic resting place here on the forested southern hillsides of the town. Stories about life in the mountains are also recounted in the Museum of Popular Art in Teodone with an interesting exhibition which highlights different social ranks, past and current.

With a great deal of culture, shopping fun, a leisurely stop-off and exciting events – that’s your holiday in Brunico.

BRESSANONE
Our guests talk about twin inspirations when they recount their holiday in Bressanone. The town and the mountains really are rich in variety. The oldest town in Tyrol is Baroque in style, yet at the same time it moves with the pulse of the times. Here Old Tyrolean traditions meet the culture of Italian pleasure, 300 days of sunshine a year in an Alpine climate.

Hundreds of years ago it was still a destination to which the emperor travelled and a magnificent diocesan town, now Bressanone has become a town which has a modern infrastructure, in which historic buildings and genuine South Tyrolean customs find common ground.

The only cathedral square in the Alps, a proportionately large Old Town with medieval character, exciting museums and lots of smaller and bigger sights shape the townscape. Experience Bressanone off your own bat or on an informative tour of the town – we are happy to organise a tour through Bressanone which is just an hour’s drive from our hotels in South Tyrol.

Bressanone – fantastic shopping too. If you want to feel a bit of Alpine lifestyle and a soupcon of Italian, the range of contemporary shops and distinctive handcrafts shop will fill you with inspiration. THE LEGEND OF THE CROSS
Church are located at the end of the beautiful Ahrntal Valley, a place of pilgrimage and a source of inspiration for all those who have an interest of culture and nature enthusiasts. The Santo Spirito Church is the focal point of the town which in times of yore provided a sanctuary for travellers and a spiritual hub for the miners in Predoi’s copper mines.

A special legend about the cross in the church fittingly describes the spirit of this excursion destination – the crucifix was initially in Prastmann Hof, when a rifleman came along and wanted to test his marksmanship before a competition. Sacrilegiously, he shot at the cross and afterwards, he won the competition.

His prize was a bull, which he took home with him. When the two passed the crucifix, the bull killed the rifleman – so he immediately paid for his actions. The aforementioned cross is now located in the Santo Spirito church and is said to have a special effect upon visitors.

A landslide created these dome-like shapes which characterise the massif. When the setting sun immerses the Pyramids in a yellowy red light, awakening mysterious shadows, that’s when you get to experience one of the most impressive scenes in nature.

There are very well signposted hiking routes around the Earth pyramids, which also tempt you to head out on more extended tours.
