The Restaurant La Brezza with its Michelin star and 17 GaultMillau Points offers sophisticated gourmet cuisine. GaultMillau crowned our 30-year-old chef Marco Campanella Discovery of the Year 2019 in Ticino, and the Michelin Guide rewarded his work with his first star.

La Casetta
A paradise located at the lake. The small and idyllic lake house on the lakeshores of Lake Maggiore enchants with its southern charm. At the restaurant La Casetta awaits you in addition to homemade pasta dishes a wide range of grill specialities.

Especially to be emphasised is the fish vitrine with diverse freshly caught fishes. Another highlight is the Mediterranean Antipasti buffet – the perfect place to embrace the Dolce Vita.

Most preferred and most exclusive holiday destination
The sparkling Lake Maggiore at your feet, the beautiful Ticino mountains at eye level – the fischermen village Ascona offers its visitors a fascinating backdrop. Numerous leisure activities await you throughout the region and nearby Piemonte.

Excursion to Giumaglio Waterfall
I most enjoy spending time in the great outdoors with my wife and our son. We have discovered a particularly beautiful spot near Giumaglio Waterfall. I have never seen such clear water! Giumaglio can be reached in 20 minutes by car from Ascona or – for those who prefer a more authentic approach – on one of our hotel’s own Vespas.

Those who want to get some exercise have the option of cycling there on either a conventional bicycle or an e-bike before cooling off with a refreshing swim in the basin of the waterfall.

My Grotti
Without doubt, any stay in Ticino has to include visits to a couple of grottos. Cheese and meat specialities from the local region, freshly made polenta, savoury risotto, tender braised brasato, home-made cakes and many other delicacies are served in earthy surroundings.

Grottos tend to be found in idyllic locations, use mainly regional produce and cook in a simple way. I will gladly share some of my favourite places with you, and look forward to hearing what you think of them. Come to think of it, I would prefer to accompany you there myself…

Exploring the Maggia valley
I love riding my bicycle on the cycle route from Locarno railway station along the lakeside promenade to the Parco della Pace where the path branches off and leads past the Falconeria (make sure to pay it a visit!) towards Losone.

On the other side of Losone, the Melezza flows into the Maggia and you soon reach Tegna and Ponte Brolla. This is where the Maggia, Ticino’s most powerful river, shows off its might: it has eaten into the light-grey gneiss, splitting, hollowing out, and polishing the rock.

After Ponte Brolla, the bicycle path follows the main road for a short while and then, before Avegno, branches off onto the old road that winds through beautiful small villages that are typical of the area. A stop in Maggia is highly recommended.

Once I get to Ponte Brolla, I go cliff diving from a height of up to 20 metres. Make sure you don’t miss the annual European Cliff Diving Championship! Close to the diving site, visitors can enjoy a dammed-up pool for swimming and beaches for sunbathing.

In Ponte Brolla, you can jump into the water from various heights, as there are rock overhangs at 3, 6, 9, 15, and 20 metres in this natural adventure swimming pool.

On 4 August 2015, extreme athlete Lazaro Schaller broke the world record for cliff diving by leaping from a height of 58.8 metres by the Cascada del Salto waterfall to the north of the village of Maggia. That’s a bit too high for me! Please start slowly, as this sport is not without risks.

Hiking course: Corcapolo – Rasa – Pozzuolo – Ronco sopra Ascona
Hiking is one of my great passions: I devote any free time to exercise, nature, fresh air and exciting encounters with animals and other people. One of my favourite hiking trails leads from the Centovalli valleys and across the Centovalli mountains before heading back to Lake Maggiore.

Take the train as far as Corcapolo, where a tranquil path climbs steadily to Rasa. Alternatively, it is possible to take a cable car from Verdasio to Rasa.

The last car-free village in Ticino is a good place to stop for something to eat before tackling the slight incline through neighbouring Weiler Monti to the deserted Alpstafel Termine.

Here you bear left, following the path up through extensive chestnut forests to Pozzuolo. Shortly before Pozzuolo you reach the mountain ridge; as the woods thin out, there are breathtaking views of Lake Maggiore.

This is the perfect spot for that well-earned picnic. A panoramic ridgeway tracks the mountain crest in a pleasant descent to Corona dei Pinci, from where you snake down through Cassina, Purèra and Non towards Ronco. From Ronco there are plenty of buses back to Ascona.

Climbing at the Capanna Pairolo
As an enthusiastic climber, I regularly scale any walls I can find in my neighbourhood after work. If I have more time, I drive to the Capanna Pairolo lodge northeast of Lugano.

The beautifully situated lodge has its own climbing wall with 111 handholds and grips and two main anchorages as well as rings for adjustments (on direct ascents) and possible sideways movements.

On clear and sunny days, you can see as far as the Monte Rosa massif and the peaks of the Valais Alps – including the Matterhorn – from the terrace of the lodge. I also enjoy the 30-minute walk to the ‘Denti della Vecchia’, dolomite formations that offer climbers 123 different routes of varying degrees of difficulty.

Visit to LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura
For a taste of international metropolitan flair, I regularly leave tranquil Ascona behind to spend time in Lugano, the largest town in Ticino.

In addition to strolling round the streets of the town and enjoying aperitifs on the shores of Lake Lugano, I always visit the LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura. Even if it is just to see the striking architectural structure, you should pay a visit to this newly created centre for art and culture.

The extensive programme comprises temporary exhibitions, events, musical events, theatre and dance performances, along with a variety of cultural initiatives.

LAC is also home to the Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana (Art Museum of Italian Switzerland), Lugano, formed by the amalgamation of the Cantonal Art Museum and the Art Museum of the City of Lugano.

Located on three levels, the gallery houses a permanent exhibition containing the collections of the City of Lugano and of Canton Ticino, temporary exhibitions, and site-specific installations.

Eden Roc Beach & Water fun
The Eden Roc Beach, located next to the pergola, is compact and classy. It is not only ideal for relaxing and enjoying delicious barbecues, but also a perfect starting point for sailing courses with the Laser Bug sailing dinghies. You can discover a wide range of water sport activities for the whole family in association with Asconautica.

Excursions to the valleys of Ticino
Valle Maggia
Enjoy relaxing hours in the forests and valleys, setting your own pace and schedule. Visit the gorge of Ponte Brolla, the mountain church in Mogno or even the museum in Cevio. The many Grottos serving local specialties are an ideal way to round off your excursion.

Valle Verzasca
This steep-sided valley, some 25 km long, begins in Gordola. The Roman influence becomes apparent as soon as you pass the reservoir of Vogorno and cross the oldest Roman bridge in Lavertezzo. Visit Sonogno, home to the handicrafts of Ticino, and finish this excursion with a visit to a grotto as well.

Centovalli
In Verdasio a small cable car leads up to Rasa. Up here, time seems to have stood still, and the inhabited typical Ticino village invites you to linger. Otherwise, Verdasio is the starting point for wonderful hiking trails to Intragna or Pizzo Leone, which offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the lake.
