HISTORY & TRADITION
Our great-grandfather Josef Rifesser has built the Villa San Giuseppe with three apartments in the year 1933. The grandson Wilfried with his wife Monika took over the villa in 1973 and converted it into a bed & breakfast. In 1989, the house has been extended and adapted to the needs of the guests.

In the year 2008, the bed & breakfast was replaced with the new 4 star Hotel Grones. The hotel is run with enthusiasm and commitment by daughter Nadia and her husband Roman (passionate chef) together with the parents Wilfried and Monika.

We are glad to welcome you to our hotel, which has always been characterized by a personal and hearty atmosphere.

Let us spoil you! Tradition and a welcoming atmosphere are very important in our hotel in Ortisei Val Gardena. We are pleased to take care of your concerns and strive to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Every day you spend in Val Gardena turns into an exciting experience if you like walking amongst alpine cabins, mountain streams and larches.

The Gardena Valley offers plenty of hiking opportunities of varying levels of difficulty to accommodate all individuals: you can take the gondola lift up to the flat alpine pastures on Alpe di Siusi plateau, ascend either to Rasciesa-alp on board of a modern funicular, or to Seceda-alp.

From here you can proceed farther till you reach the Puez-Odle mountain group with its countless hiking trails.

If the range of opportunities offered by the Gardena Valley is still not enough for you, you can access the Sella Pass, the Pordoi Pass or the Gardena Pass and go hiking on the tracks of enchanting mountains such as Fanes, Marmolada and Catinaccio. It won’t be easy to make a choice but any excursion will be ravishing and worthwhile!

MOUNTAIN BIKE
The whole Val Gardena is a true eldorado for mountain bikers who have a vast array of tracks to keep fit on with a lot of fun! An endless range of easy and difficult routes will take you through the magic mountain world of the Dolomites.

With the help of a mountain bike guide and profiting from the local mountain railways you can ride your mountain bike around the Sella massif in one day (Sellaronda MTB Track Tour).

The passes of the Dolomites have always represented the hardest challenge for all bikers. That’s why they represent the main highlights of the area. On Sellaronda Bike Day for instance all Dolomitic passes around the Sella massif are closed and accessible only by bikers.

CLIMBING AND MOUNTAINEERING
The Dolomites are known worldwide as one of the most beautiful areas for climbers and mountaineers. The peaks are exceptionally fascinating for lovers of this sport!

For all climbers and mountaineers walking on ridges and climbing steep walls are unforgettable experiences. The Alpine school Catores and its experienced guides will be glad to recommend a long list of routes throughout the valley.

The via ferrata Meisules, via ferrata Oskar-Schuster and via ferrata Pisciadù are maybe the most famous of the several climbing tracks Val Gardena is rich in.

All villages in the Gardena Valley – Ortisei, Selva and S. Cristina – are equipped with outdoor and indoor climbing walls where you can practice on rainy days. Another exciting trail experience for the whole family is the new Adventure path „Emozion Col de Flam” near Seceda station.

Not to mention the so-called „Gardenissima“, the longest giant slalom competition that takes place on the Seceda-alp to celebrate the finish of the winter season. With its 6 km of slope, it is one of the most spectacular and challenging alpine races ever.

If you want to show what you can do come and participate regardless whether you are a racer or a recreational athlete. THE DOLOMITES
The Dolomites began their life in a prehistoric tropical sea. Following the ice age there was a remarkable metamorphosis of these illustrious structures due to the thawing ice and water.

The famous red glow these mountains emit at sunset is one of the peculiarities the Dolomites owe to their unique mineralogical composition. The colour of the rocky cliffs increases in intensity until they emanate a glowing red, transitioning to a persistent orange until they reach increasingly darker shades of violet.

Such an emblematic phenomenon of the Dolomites, it is one of the most extraordinary of natural sights. The first mineralogical analysis of the Dolomites was completed by the French scientist Déodat de Dolomieu in 1791. This pale and extraordinary rock was named „Dolomit“ after the geologist.

Within the very heart of these natural guardians and under their protection we find the village of Ortisei, located at an altitude of 1236 meters above sea level. It is the ideal starting point for long hikes, climbing trips and many other sporting activities both in the summer and the winter.

The mountains surrounding Ortisei create a magical backdrop: mount Rasciesa stands out on the northern side and is served by a modern funicular railway, mount Seceda, whose peak can be reached by a traditional cable car towers to the east while the mountains of Alpe di Siusi stand tall at the south side of the village.

A cable railway gives access to this wonderful high alpine plateau. The mountains along both sides of the valley are protected and belong to the natural parks of Puez-Odle and Scilliar-Catinaccio.
