We can rightly claim that our Romantik Hotel Oberwirt is not just one of the many hotels in South Tyrol: with such a long history to look back on, it is a hotel filled with tradition and values.

The first historical references to “Jakob Wirt” and the “zur oberen Wirt” date back to 1496. Around 1600, a number of documents refer to the building as the “Oberwürth”.

The hotel changed hands a number of times in the years to follow. In 1749 the name “Waldner” appeared for the first time, founding the tradition of our family which continues to this day.

When the Oberwirt was taken over by the Waldner family, it set out on a path which continues to this day. Over the course of a number of generations, the village guest house has ripened into a realm of leisure, pleasure and joy.

Courage, a spirit of innovation and foresight are the characteristics which the whole family shares; great-grandparents Martha and Franz Waldner had an abundance of this pioneering spirit back in the 1950 and 1960s when they renovated the Oberwirt.

When their son Josef took over his parents‘ hotel in 1973, he laid the path for future generations and brought a touch of modern, contemporary luxury to the Oberwirt, always in harmony with the traditions of old.

Nowadays, daughter Barbara is at the helm of the new generation. Together, she and Sepp, the head of the house, are leading the Oberwirt into the future.

THE WALDNER FAMILY
Here at the Romantik Hotel Oberwirt, we cultivate a very special relationship with our guests. With our genuine South Tyrolean style, we know how to make our guests feel at home.

This art of hospitality has been passed down through the Waldner family from generation to generation. As our guest at the Oberwirt you are part of our family. When you’re on holiday here, you will feel truly at home.

HOTELIERS BY PASSION
Full-blooded hoteliers and family-people all rolled into one – this description matches every member of our family. Together with daughter Barbara, Josef holds the reins at the hotel, and they are always ready to lend an ear to their guests here at the Oberwirt.

The next generation is waiting in the wings – Barbara and her husband Dr. Steffen Riess‘ children, Annalena, Emily and Johann are proud to call the Oberwirt their second home.

Senior head of the house “Sepp” devotes his life to a number of passions here: Breeding Haflingers, cultivating roses and producing wine. All in the service of the Oberwirt – and you can see the evidence of his success all around the hotel.

Very close to the Oberwirt – namely, in the exclusive dirndl and leisurewear shop Hallali (Link zu Hallali – you will find daughter Anna, who runs the shop together with her mother Renate. Together, we want to provide you with an all-round experience – so that you can write your very own piece of Oberwirt history.

Maybe you didn’t know, but the Oberwirt is known amongst wine connoisseurs as an outstanding wine hotel, and is a professional member of Vinum hotels. When it comes to fine wines, we have the same philosophy as we do with everything else in the hotel: We make sure that the quality is outstanding.

Only the best of wines with a full-bodied bouquet and intense aromas make it onto our wine list which, incidentally, was the recipient of the 2012 South Tyrol award for the Best Wine List in South Tyrol.

Around 500 top-class international wines – including, of course, the award-winning wine from our own vineyard – welcome you to savour, to sample and to enjoy.

If there’s too much to choose from, our sommeliers Heinrich Prinoth, Hermine Pircher and Heinz Schrott will be happy to help you decide, or to find your own favourite wine during our weekly tasting sessions.

It ripens slowly but surely on the long slopes beneath the Meran sun, in the nearby Freiberg, Meran: the Oberwirt wine.

Like so much else, viticulture at the Waldner house looks back on a long tradition that spans more than 11 generations. Landlord Josef Waldner is passionate about getting the very best out of the land, to serve guests and wine lovers the best of South Tyrolean wines.

The grapes ripening on the Eichenstein estate, to meet with you later in the Oberwirt as velvety reds and sparkling, fruity whites. Take a journey through the world of wines on a guided tour and tasting session in the Eichenstein winery.

WITH THE POWER OF THE SOUTH TYROLEAN LANDS
Here at the Romantik Hotel Oberwirt, we place all of our trust in the treasures of nature. That’s why our AMADEA Spa rests on five central pillars: the first four are sensual wild rose, soothing lavender, revitalising mountain herb hay and rejuvenating grape, all of which can be found in our range of beauty and body treatments – and you’ll feel just how good they are on your own skin.

Alongside the four pillars, the fifth pillar is the most important of all: It’s the people, who are the reason for every single thing we do. So place your trust in our spa experts – as our AMADEA philosophy goes, we do our all to give you renewed energy and radiance.

BODY & SOUL
Our body is our most important asset. That’s why we should nurture and care for it, and give it a treat once in a while. What better way to do it than with fabulously relaxing massages and treatments, refreshing scrubs and nourishing packs?

Our spa experts have put together a number of sublime packages for you that incorporate the best of everything. The haki® methods by Harald Kitz are based on a holistic perception of the individual in a tailor-made concept for the harassed people of the modern-day world.

Let our haki therapists guide you through the unique treatment as they free the shoulder, neck and head from superfluous pressure. You will feel all your strength coming back to you.

FRESH MOUNTAIN AIR & UNTOUCHED NATURE
One of our weekly highlights takes place up on high at 1,150 metres above sea level, on an idyllic pasture on the Marlinger Berg Mountain. We’re talking of our very own Alpine pasture hut – the Waldner Alm, which you can visit up close on a relaxed hike with Marianne every Wednesday.

At one time a “refuge” for our grandfather Franz Waldner III and friends and acquaintances of the family, this beautiful alpine hut is today a small natural paradise, much loved by visitors of all ages.

For over a century, the erstwhile simple wooden house, owned by the Waldner family since 1906, has been extended and carefully renovated into the charming alpine hut of today. A small chapel in honour of St. Hubert, patron saint of hunting and hunters, was built in the 1980s.

ALPINE HUT EXPERIENCE
Come and join us on our very special alpine experience when we hike up to our Waldner Alm. The first stretch of the journey is on the Vigiljoch train, which takes us high up the mountain. Then we head out on a relaxing hike, suitable for both young and old, to our old mountain hut.

Breathtaking panoramas, spectacular views over the Etsch Valley and a traditional South Tyrolean “Marende” of speck, cheese and Vinschger Paarl bread are just what you need to reward you for your efforts!

You’re in very good company on a visit to our pasture: Well-known personalities, including Diego Maradona, have stayed at our Waldner Alm.

THE WALDNER’S VINEYARD
As a wine hotel, the wine experience is paramount here at the Oberwirt. Wine connoisseurs – or even just anyone who wants to learn a bit more about wines – are in good hands at our Eichenstein vineyard.

With its incomparable view over the vineyards and its own chalet, our estate in Freiberg near Meran is nothing short of a mini-paradise. Since 2004, landlord Josef Waldner began growing and bottling his own wine, continuing a tradition that has spanned generations of the Waldner family.

The range of wines is packed with variety: In addition to the varietal wines of Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Riesling, the distinctive bouquets of the “Gloria Dei” and “Baccara” cuvees never fail to captivate the drinker.

Clear lines, stone and wood: Practically an architectural masterpiece, seamlessly echoing the idyll of the vineyards – the Eichenstein vineyard is well worth a trip, and is the pride of the Waldner family.

WINERY EXPERIENCE
The Eichenstein estate covers an area of around 1.5 hectares of winery and vineyards, as well as three additional vineyards, a Vinarium, which was completed in 2014, and its own guest chalet in the midst of the vineyards.

Just half an hour away from the hotel on a sunny slope at 550 metres above sea level: This is the perfect place to let your eyes roam over the vines and to savour fine wines from the Waldner wine estate. Come and enjoy this special experience and explore the Eichenstein Estate on a guided tour with tasting session.

OBERWIRT ROSE SANCTUARY
Wherever your eye happens to fall you’ll see endless roses during your stay with us here at the Romantik Hotel Oberwirt. At reception, a bouquet of bright flowers welcomes you, in the rooms the vibrant flowers add a stunning splash of colour and, to decorate the table, they are the stuff of true romance.

The queen of flowers has a very special meaning for us. You will also find the most beautiful of all flowers in our AMADEA Spa, where its special properties unfurl during beauty and relaxation treatments. All the roses in and around our hotel come from our own rose garden, close to the hotel.

The mesmerising allure of the Queen of Flowers inspired landlord Sepp Waldner to grow around 2,000 rose bushes of 50 different varieties. And one is particularly special: the Oberwirt Rose, which stands out from the rest in its stunning colours and stately grandeur.

HAFLINGER STUD FARM
The Haflingers of distinctive blond mane have an inextricable bond with South Tyrol, where their story began – and also with the landlord at the Oberwirt Sepp Waldner, whose life has gone hand-in-hock with these majestic animals since his childhood, and who has fulfilled his childhood dream of having his own stud farm.

His love of Haflingers never left him and, in 1990, he purchased a farm high above Lake Reschen and turned it into a “model farm,” now famed far beyond the borders of South Tyrol for his internationally acclaimed Haflingers.

Antinor the Haflinger stallion won the 5th place at the Haflinger World Exhibition 1995 at the age of three, and at over 20 years old, is a legend today. More recently (2012), Haflinger stallion “Noend” was awarded Reserve Champion (2nd place) at the international Stallion Championships in Merano.

Today, a large herd of mares and foals live on the stud farm in Reschen, on over 10 hectares of mountain land at 1,550 meters above sea level, surrounded by velvety meadows and a breathtaking mountain panorama.

The stallions are housed at our stallion station at Castle Baslan in Tscherms near Meran. Experienced professionals train the Haflingers in a variety of sports and leisure activities, including sleigh and sulky riding, in dressage and in western riding.

Once a week, as part of our weekly programme, Sepp Waldner will take you and introduce you to his magnificent horses in the stallion station in Tscherms. Experience the fascinating allure of the Haflinger up close.

HIKING HOT-SPOTS OBERWIRT
With our gourmet cuisine, the AMADEA Spa and so much else on offer in and around our Romantik Hotel, you could easily spend a whole day in the hotel and revel in the joy of idleness.

But countless experiences await you right in front of the hotel door too; If you would like to spend an active day and see as much as possible of Marlengo and South Tyrol, there’s no lack of choice: Whether it’s a leisurely walk, a relaxed hike or a challenging day of Nordic walking, you can explore the natural countryside in the most authentic of ways.

Roaring waters, lush green pastures and jagged mountain peaks: South Tyrol is all this and more. We will be delighted to help and advise you on the best tours.

Once a week you can join us on a hike to our own alpine pasture – and there are numerous other hiking destinations in the immediate vicinity of the Oberwirt calling you to explore.

GOLFING HOLIDAY
South Tyrol boasts seven golf courses and is the perfect place for a fabulous golfing holiday. Play a round amidst blossoming apple trees or tee off from snow-capped peaks. Golfing in such breathtaking scenery is a truly unique experience.

HORSE PARADISE
South Tyrol has a strong bond with its horses, and the Haflinger has its origins here. One of the highlights at our Romantik Hotel Oberwirt is our own Haflinger stud farm.

Take a trip with host Sepp Waldner on a guided tour of his stallion station at Castle Baslan and learn a wealth of fascinating facts about one of his great passions.

You can also take a trip to the Meran Racecourse where a number of professional races are often held at weekends, one of which is the second largest steeplechase in Europe: “The Grand Prix of Meran”.

Do you fancy getting on the saddle yourself? There are a number of places in South Tyrol where you can do just that. Here are some horse-riding tips within easy reach of the Oberwirt.

Hafling Village
Around half an hour away from the hotel you will find the small village of Hafling, where the magnificent Haflingers originated. Marvel at these majestic creatures as they graze in the alpine meadows or head out on a ride on the blonde-maned beauties – many stables offer horse rides.

Meran Riding Club
Replete with riding school, riding arena and tournament arena, the Meran riding club is located directly at the racetrack and offers everything a rider’s heart desires. You can also take dressage or horse-jumping lessons and hone your riding skills here.

IF YOU LIKE CASTLES, YOU’LL LOVE SOUTH TYROL
There are around 800 castles and palaces to visit in South Tyrol – not without good reason is South Tyrol famed for having more castles than anywhere else in Europe.

Not surprisingly, the Meran area also boasts a great deal of castles and stately homes; it was formerly the seat of the Tyrolean sovereigns and, as capital of the Tyrol, an important centre of power. Take a tour of the castles and discover the cultural history of South Tyrol from the Middle Ages to the late Baroque period.

Our little village of Marling is home to a proud castle of its own. And if you head further afield on a visit our neighbouring towns of Lana, Schenna, Tisens or Prissian, you will come across an immense array of castles. Here are a few of our favourite ones near the Oberwirt.

Lebenberg Castle
Built in 1240 in Marling, Lebenberg Castle, with its Rococo details and Venetian mirrors, it is considered to be the grandest castle complex of the Burggrafenamt.

Trauttmansdorff Castle
Without a doubt the most famous castle in Meran – on the one hand because it was once a favoured holiday destination of Empress “Sissi”, and on the other because of its stunning botanical gardens.

Prince’s Castle Meran
Today a museum, the Prince’s Castle in the centre of Meran was formerly the city seat of the Tyrolean sovereigns and was built in 1470 by Archduke Sigmund.

THE WINE VILLAGE OF MARLING
Although, at around 2,500 inhabitants, our little village of Marling may not be one of the largest villages in South Tyrol, it is certainly one of the most charming.

Visitors and residents are all in agreement that it offers the best of everything: With its proximity to Meran, city life is within easy reach while its location high above Meran, surrounded by apple orchards, grape vines and stunning mountain panorama as far as the eye can see, offers the calm peace of the countryside.

The Waldner family also have their own orchards and winery. Please ask us – we will be delighted to help you with tips around Marling. Embark on a voyage of discovery in Marling and breathe in the unique Alpine-Mediterranean lifestyle.

Parish Church of the Holy Assumption
The 74 metre high Romanesque tower of the parish church soars up to the sky; the side chapel of the neo-Gothic church dates back to the 13th century and houses valuable frescoes dating to around 1400. Incidentally, a poem about the “Bells of Marling” was set to music by none other than Franz Liszt himself.

Shopping at the Oberwirt
Exclusive delicacies from South Tyrol and Italy are available for purchase in our shop, where we whet your appetite for that something special: all of our products are authentic tastes sourced from family businesses and small companies that combine traditional customs with craftsmanship.

Hallali
Visit Andrea and Renate Waldner in their exclusive specialist shop for high-quality traditional fashion, country house fashion and casual stylish clothing for men and women. Browse through the hand-picked fashion selection and find with the help of the best advice your very own favorite piece.

THE HISTORIC SPA TOWN ON THE PASSER RIVER
The best thing is that it’s so close: The spa town of Meran, second largest city in South Tyrol, is just a short walk from our Romantik Hotel Oberwirt. Even back in the 19th century, Meran was famed as a “climatic winter resort” due to its mild, soothing climate.

The city gained further prominence when Empress Sissi came here: As a result, the sleepy little town went on to become a luxury resort, and its lush parks and lush gardens attracted endless attention.

Back in the present day, Meran has by no means fallen asleep again; the traditional alleys are complemented by a fresh atmosphere where you will find both ancient buildings and trendy stores to shop and while away the time.

Alongside sightseeing and taking in the culture, the narrow alleys of the inner town of Meran are a wonderful place for a stroll. Here are a few of our recommendations for you.

Shopping
The arcades, hallmark of Meran, date back to the 13th century and are not only beautiful to behold but are also a fabulous area for shopping lovers. In the shops under the arcades, you will find everything you could wish for, from delicatessens to high fashion.

Culture & Architecture
Countless magnificent Art Nouveau buildings with shapely oriels and turrets adorn the cityscape of Meran, including the dome-crowned spa, the city theatre and the Art Nouveau “Wandelhalle “ arcade of the winter promenade on the right bank of the Passer.

Museums
In addition to activities and culture, Meran and the surrounding area also boast a number of museums, including, to name a few, the National Museum of Tourism in Trauttmansdorff Castle, the Provincial Castle and the Wine Museum in Rametz Castle. And a whole lot more.
