Hotel Villa Kastelruth in the heart of Castelrotto (Alpe di Siusi) offers modern comfort in a historic Villa ambience. Hotel Villa Kastelruth, built over in 1903 as an alpine nursing home and recently renovated, welcomes you with only 28 rooms in the centre of the famous village of Castelrotto in the Italian Alps.

With its sunny garden, the year-round heated outdoor pool and the two spectacular panoramic saunas, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Dolomites, UNESCO World Heritage Site. Come and discover the legendary Dolomites in summer with our guided hikes and in winter with our guided skiing and exciting snowshoe hikes in the snow.

Not two rooms in our historical Hotel Villa Kastelruth are alike, because no two guests are alike. Our guests can choose between comfortable Standard rooms, slightly larger Comfort rooms, generous Superior rooms with cozy seating corner, spacious Deluxe rooms with large balcony and Junior Suites with a separate living area. Most of the rooms have balconies and wonderful views of the surrounding mountains.

Rest and relax in the panoramic Finnish sauna and the heated outdoor pool overlooking the Schlern and the Dolomites. A generous 15-meter outdoor pool overlooking the mountains of the Dolomites invites our guests to swim, cool off and relax.

At the Villa Kastelruth you will find an extensive breakfast buffet (until 10:30 am), a courtesy afternoon snack at the bar and a 4-course à la carte dinner including local Alpine and other Italian dishes.

When composing our menus, we prefer seasonal, local products, which are processed to seductive creations every day with a lot of refinement. The selection also includes vegetarian specialities, fine fish dishes and special gluten-free dishes for coeliacs.

Hotel Villa Kastelruth is located centrally in Castelrotto, the largest town in the Seiser Alm region. It is an ideal starting point for walks in the Dolomites, hikes on the Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi, to Tires, Val Gardena and the Schlern mountain.

The public shuttle to the cable car to the Alpe di Siusi stops directly in front of the hotel. In addition, the Villa Kastelruth is an ideal starting point for motorcycle tours over the Sciliar plateau and the different high mountain passes in the Dolomites.

THE HISTORY

Until the end of the 19th century there was no road leading to Castelrotto and cities like Bolzano could only be reached from here by a laborious day’s walk. Only in 1887 the first road was completed and more and more visitors were attracted to the plateau.

The enterprising town doctor Dr. Luis Mayr immediately realized the potential of the new guests and in 1903 started to build the thermal guesthouse “Kastelruth” (today Hotel Villa Kastelruth).

In addition to hydrotherapy, electrotherapy and medicinal baths, an advertising brochure from 1906 also advertises tobogganing (via the road to Ponte Gardena) and skiing (on the still completely undeveloped Alpe di Siusi).

Tourism boomed at the beginning of the 20th century and the transformation into a renown vacation destination seemed unstoppable. The only one who was less enthusiastic was the parish priest, who, in view of the many “strangers” brought by the new road, wondered “whether the road is also profitable in terms of the salvation of souls”…

Two world wars and the intermediate period of crisis interrupt the vigorous development of tourism in Castelrotto and the villa changes hands in 1924 and 1941. In 1962 family Plattner acquires the “Kastelruth” guesthouse.

In 2013 Mr. Anselmi from Bolzano becames the new owner. He renovates and expands the villa with great care into a 4 star hotel and in 2015 gives it to the Demetz family who is managing it since.

Before taking his leave, the summer of Castelrotto dresses up in his most beautiful dress, offering the eye of his visitor a beautiful spectacle of autumn colors. Looking down towards the Valle d’ Isarco, one can spot the leaves of the trees and vineyards coloured red and yellow.

When looking up, the larches start to turn yellow and lose their needles and on the top the peaks of the Sciliar and the Dolomites start to be covered in white by the first snow. And all this while in the kitchens of the farmhouses the families start preparing the autumn specialties for the traditional “Törggelen”…

TÖRGGELEN: EATING TODAY, AS THEN
“Törggelen” is an ancient autumnal South Tyrolean custom in which, between September and November, the farmers begin to make their own wine and invite neighbours and friends to come and taste it. Groups of friends thus go from farm to farm, sit down together in the farmhouses cosy parlour and taste hearty dishes along with the delicious wine.

The farmer will provide his locally grown and produced dishes (like cheese, sausage, bacon, sauerkraut, barley soup, etc.) and the young wine. Every autumn this popular tradition attracts many visitors, aiming to spend wonderful Törggelen evenings in homey taverns and rustic inns.

BURNING DOLOMITES
In autumn the low sunsets create a spectacular red light, which gives the pale Dolomite rocks the impression as if they were burning.

From the Alpe di Siusi, this phenomenon can be seen particularly well given the great views on the Sassolungo and Sella mountains. In late September and October our hiking guide organizes special sunset hikes to witness this natural spectacle called “Burning Dolomites”.
