The Forest Sauna
A wonderful sauna area in the forest, which is dedicated to your total relaxation and offers a large adventure sauna (90°C with daily infusions), a Kneipp pool in direct contact with nature, experience showers, a generous light-flooded relaxation room, a heated whirlpool with 11 seats and a wonderful view at the forest.

On the top floor our beautiful Sky Terrace is awaiting you with a 360° panorama on the surrounding peaks of the Texel and Ortler groups.

Finnish Sauna
This sauna is effective with alternating hot and cold and a pleasantly dry atmosphere at a temperature of about 90°C-100°C. The dry heat promotes inner cleansing and offers full and perfect relaxation.

Bio Vitarium
Relax, heat up, at the same time, reaping benefits for health. You can do this in our 60°C organic sauna. Primarily for those who do not like the extreme heat of a classic sauna but do not want to miss out on sauna benefits, then we would recommend a visit to our Bio Vitarium.

Although temperatures are significantly lower than the Finnish sauna, nevertheless sweating is achieved. Also humidity is higher in this sauna. In combination with pleasant heat, this sauna has especially positive effects on general wellbeing.

Steam Bath
Especially your skin and respiratory system will thank you, for making more than one visit to our steam bath. Temperatures are around 50°C and humidity ranges between 80 and 100 percent.

Steam bathing cleanses and fortifies body defence mechanisms and facilitates breathing. Circulation and metabolism is gently stimulated. After a mud, sea salt, raw sugar or honey vapour bath, your skin will feel pleasantly soft and you will experience a sensation of general wellbeing.

On “Merano’s sunny terrace” as the plateau around Josef Mountain Resort is also known, in summer, there is practically nothing more beautiful than admiring the wonders of nature while walking or hiking.

Here, the desire for exercise is spontaneous. And mind and spirit are also on the move, uplifted by pleasure of experiencing this trouble-free life. The many walking trails, starting right in front of the hotel, will lead you through woodlands and forests, across alpine meadows and up high mountains.

Following the clearly signposted trails, you can go on pleasant walks and round-trips for visiting monuments and attractions or undertake panoramic hikes and challenging mountain tours.

Once your hike has reached its destination, you will be rewarded with panoramas which could not be more captivating. When visibility is good, you can see as far as the Tessa Mountain Group and the Dolomites and even as far as the Ortles area and the Brenta Group range in Trentino.

Cycling Tours

Three signposted mountain- and E-Bike bike trails, starting directly in front of the hotel, will take you across the sunny plateau, revealing stunning views. Trails feature alternating easy and more demanding stretches, guaranteeing an unforgettable biking experience.

Here, summiteers, recreational bikers and bike enthusiast families all equally get their monies’ worth, living pure cycling pleasure.

Vacation on the move
Summertime in Avelengo offers a multitude of things to do. Obviously you can enjoy your vacation hiking or mountain biking but also take some time to discover the alpine countryside around you in a different way. There are so many exciting options.

Horse Riding
Horses are to Avelengo as mountains are to South Tyrol. It is no coincidence that the famous Avelengo horses take their name from the small village on the Monzoccolo mountain.

Whoever spends their holiday here must absolutely visit and marvel at the area – just once – on horseback. A number of riding stables are close by, such as the Reiterhof Sulfner stables, which offer riding lessons, excursions and carriage rides.

Playing Golf
Golf enthusiasts looking for a sporting challenge, will not be disappointed at the Passeier golf club. The 18-hole green is about 40 minutes away from Josef Mountain Resort and is just made for improving your golf driving skills.

The complex with its fairways and greens is open for play from March to November and will turn your round of golf into an unforgettable nature experience, surrounded by magnificent mountain peaks.

The 9-hole golfing green in the town of Lana is also not far away and nestles in a landscape of orchards and vineyards terraces, just below the “Brandis” castle ruins. And for topping off your golfing enjoyment, there is a driving range with 12 tee-off stations, a pitching green with bunker, as well as a putting green.

Running
Sport in a stunning surroundings is twice as fun. The area around the Josef Mountain Resort is therefore just perfect for running.

The running routes will take you by some of the most enchanting spots, like the St. Kathrein Kirchlein church in Avelengo and the beautiful Merano 2000 trekking area. Uphill, downhill and straight ahead for the perfect trail running experience.

Skiers choosing Merano 2000, primarily include recreational skiers and families but, also ambitious professional skiers will have their work cut out; in fact, the ski area has something for everyone with its 40 kilometres of slopes ranging from easy to intermediate.

Snowboarders, freeriders und carvers, on the wide slopes will get more than their monies’ worth on the demanding stretches and at the new snow park. Children’s eyes will light up at Luckis Kinderland play park, the amazing kids play area near the alpine station of the Merano 2000 cable railway.

Here, kids will find magic carpets, flat and wide slopes, a small toboggan track and lots of space for playing and romping round.

Whoever arrives without their own ski gear, can easily hire full equipment at the nearby ski hire shop. Whoever would like to learn to ski or improve their skiing style will be satisfied by the offerings at the ski school in Falzeben.

Snowshoe walking
In winter, step out of the front door of the Josef Mountain Resort, fix your snowshoes to your hiking boots and go trudging through the snow. Off on an adventure discovering the fantastic, snow-covered winter wonderland with white mountain peaks, snow-covered mountain meadows and forests.

At a leisurely pace, move forward. Step after step, along well signposted trails, hearing only the sound of snow crunching under your feet, your breathing and the sounds of nature.

At some point, you’ll be looking to take a break. Then, we would recommend you stopover at one of the rustic alpine chalet huts dotted around the area, where you will be spoilt by classic alpine fare and warm beverages which will warm up your cold limbs.

In good weather, the panoramic view stretches from the plateau, the peaks of the Tessa Mountain Group to the legendary Dolomites and Ortles area and even the Brenta Group range in Trentino. A unique experience which will long be part of your memories.

A 3-km (1.86 mile) loop-trail, starting directly in Falzeben, just a short distance away from the Josef Mountain Resort, meanders through the snow-covered, winter forests of the Avelengo plateau.

Equipment for your cross-country skiing adventure can be hired at the ski hire store on site. Then there is nothing else that stands between you and your winter endurance sport adventure.

Nordic Walking & Winter Hiking
Winter in the mountains around and about the Josef Mountain Resort, off the ski slopes, can also be breath-takingly peaceful. This is a wonderful occasion for going on a winter nordic walking and hiking adventure, on a trail that starts right in front of the Hotel door.

Well prepared hiking and walking trails will take you through an unspoilt, snow-covered landscape to quaint mountain lodges and chalet huts, which invite you to make a stopover and enjoy the panoramic views and will delight you with their appetising South Tyrolean products.

Go Ski Touring
Early in the morning, ski tour enthusiasts are already underway. Equipped with skis, skins, ski poles, helmet, avalanche transceiver, avalanche shovel and probe, skiers take off. With rhythmical movements they zig-zag up the white mountain sides.

The Knottnkino
Have you ever been to a cinema where you can admire natural landscape? Well, certainly, not like this and not like at the Knottnkino cinema in Verano.

Located on the Rotsteinkogel mountain, it can be reached from the Avelengo carpark in town by taking a signposted walking route; it has 30 wood and steel cinema-style seats designed and arranged by artist Franz Messner.

From here, visitors have a stunning, cinemascope-screen view over the entire South Tyrolean Val d’Adige valley, as far as the Dolomite peaks, the Ötztal Alps and the Tessa Mountain Group nature park. You’ll find that a trip to the “cinema” has never been crowned by so many unique panoramic views!

St. Kathrein Chapel
There is hardly another place quite so romantic in the nearby area of Josef Mountain Resort as the small St. Kathrein chapel. It is, so to speak, the landmark of the town of Avelengo and is still open for visits.

The small church dates back to the 13th Century and the inside hosts well conserved frescos. We would highly recommend taking a walk on sunny day from the town of Avelengo along a small path through the woods which leads to St. Kathrein Chapel.

The Gardens Of Trauttmansdorf Castle
The botanical gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle undisputedly belong to probably the most beautiful estate gardens in Europe.

Extending over more than 12-hectars (29.65 acres), the gardens feature over 80 different garden landscapes, including woodland gardens, summer country gardens, water and terrace gardens and gardens which host and reflect the typical flora varieties of South Tyrol.

The stunning restored castle houses the Touriseum museum with its permanent exhibition of Tyrolean and South Tyrolean history of tourism. Aided by a multimedia presentation, the history and development of tourism in this alpine region is vividly described.

The Merano Thermal Spa
A journey to a real oasis of wellbeing is offered by the Merano Thermal Spa. Here, R&R is guaranteed all-year round in a 50,000 m² of park lands.
