In the original building of the Klosterhof is where you will find Dr Andreas Färber’s Artemacur Health Centre, which hotel guests are welcome to visit.

Services range from diagnostics and therapy to nutritional advice and guidance on how to integrate healthy practices into your everyday life. But what kind of tips can you expect from the doctor?

We do not directly treat a diagnosis, but rather offer support from a different, often unconventional perspective. I advise you not to think in terms of deficits, but to appreciate yourself and your own story. This makes it easier to focus on the positives in life.

Frequent health lectures at the Klosterhof round out our holistic approach. Lectures address topics such as fasting, mindfulness and enjoyment. And what’s so special about that? Being mindful often leads to true enjoyment in life!

The Klosterhof’s unique spirit is sustainable
It is with great sensitivity and joy that we excite our guests! As interior designer of the hotel, Andreas focused on wood that builds a visible connection between the Klosterhof and nature.

Construction was of course carried out with sustainability in mind. Our Alpine Hideaway features apple wood on the inside, while larch wood shingles are a nod to nature on the outside.

Art and culture are ever-present. When the moon is full, the Klosterhof resonates with the sound of special melodies from hand-picked musicians and bands; works of art on the walls inspire with new ideas; and each room features a sculpture in the form of a very special artistic style.

Just outside our bright glass walls and windows, Mother Nature’s masterpiece fills the Klosterhof with tranquillity and grace. The Klosterhof takes its name from its original purpose as a monastery (“kloster” means monastery in German) where the monks created a sublime paradise.

The monks appreciated and cherished their secrets for a healthy life. The monks loved nature and took health very seriously. We wish to continue this work with our Artemacur Spa & Health Centre!

How the Klosterhof became a place of power
Our connection to this unique place began in 2010. We were on the search for a hotel project where we could live out our life-long dream. Together, we created this place where people can relax and recharge, be inspired and do the best for their health and themselves.

We always approach work with positivity and a hands-on mentality. Together, we have created a coherent, harmonious place – for you as guests, for our staff and for ourselves. That is what makes the Klosterhof so powerful. And what will move us into the future!

A Hotel with History and Passion
Stay, enjoy, and walk the path of history
The Klosterhof Alpine Hideaway & Spa has history – one that is still alive today. The old part of this four-star superior hotel in Bad Reichenhall was once the St Zeno self-sufficient monastery. Augustinian monks guarded ancient knowledge and practised the traditions of their order.

Their beautiful garden served as a place of retreat: herbs, vegetables and old remedies flourished magnificently. Your host Dr Andreas Färber is particularly proud of the hotel’s history and the monks’ knowledge – as a doctor, he too wants to contribute to a healthy life for his guests.

Passion and excitement in Berchtesgadener Land
There is so much to see, discover and tell at the Klosterhof. Trails steeped in history wind their way past the hotel. Your hosts Dr Andreas and Henrike Färber happily take the time to tell you about the history of the region, treasures of the hotel and the variety of life that calls this area home.

Our passion for life is even reflected in the hotel’s logo. What does the Klosterhof symbol stand for? Dr Andreas Färber will be happy to tell you more about the meaning behind the triskelion – the Celtic sun symbol – in person.

The symbol of unity, progress and growth can also be found in the three pillars that make the passion for living at the Klosterhof so vibrant: “Find inspiration, live healthy and feel individuality – that is our motto,” say the Färbers, who have built everything in keeping with these principles.

How did the Klosterhof get its name?
“Klosterhof” is a combination of the German words “Kloster” – monastery – and “Hof” – farm. From 1500 to 1800, the Augustinian Monks of the St Zeno monastery lived and worked here. Later, they sold the monastery to a family of farmers and soon after people were flocking to this place.

An old funicular railway took people from the city of Bad Reichenhall to the Klosterhof, which at the time featured a dance floor. The fun and happiness came to a halt with the outbreak of World War II.

The Klosterhof transformed into refugee accommodation and later into a boarding school. Actress Romy Schneider often came to visit her brother, who spent his childhood here. Years passed and the Lederer family bought the Klosterhof and breathed new life into it by turning it into a small and lovingly run hotel.

The Färber family and the Klosterhof
The Färber family purchased the property at the end of 2011. Today, their lifelong dream has become reality. After an extensive expansion, the Klosterhof awoke from hibernation in July 2016 in its new architectural splendour – and it hasn’t looked back since.

The former self-sufficient St Zeno Augustinian monastery today offers guests the space they need to recharge both body and mind. Excitement and passion provide constant inspiration.

“We know every stone in this house and have created something beautiful – even if at times in a somewhat unconventional way,” says Henrike Färber happily.

During the expansion, Andreas Färber placed great importance on sustainability, modern architecture and widespread use of wood. The outer walls are clad with larch-wood shingles and charmingly blend into the alpine landscape.

Together with the Philipp Haas und Söhne traditional master workshop in Bad Reichenhall, Dr Andreas Färber worked tirelessly on the interior design.

The Hotel Klosterhof is made of 90% apple wood; a unique feature that solidifies our connection with nature – and a true rarity! Our rooms create a sense of well-being and make you want to explore your own connection to nature.

Did you know … ?
Sustainability is an important issue at the Klosterhof. Even despite our high energy expenditure in the spa, our efforts were boosted by a loan for energy-efficient construction from the KfW.

Adjustments were made to meet the requirements of the community and the salt water protection area, energy consumption was optimised and gas is used.

Special alpine brine from Bad Reichenhall
This is a truly special treasure in our area: the alpine brine mineral spring around the Bad Reichenhall Bavarian State Baths. For more than 250 million years, the salt of the prehistoric ocean was hidden in the depths of the mountains.

Dissolved by spring water, it has collected in the cavity of the Bad Reichenhall basin as a unique alpine brine – with wonderful benefits for people. With a salt content of 12%, it has a beneficial and cleansing effect.

Studies show the positive effects of this salty brine on the respiratory tract, body, mind and soul. At the Klosterhof hotel and spa, this “white gold” can be found in our healing saltwater floating pool.

Pain therapy: Liebscher & Bracht techniques
Tension and pain is released using osteopressure techniques developed by Liebscher & Bracht. Our well-trained pain management therapist Gerlinde uses her hands to treat visitors naturally and targets the cause, not just the symptoms, of their pain.

The alarm pain receptors discovered by Liebscher & Bracht are used to influence pain points, which act as biological information switches to the brain.

Your host Dr Andreas Färber studied international health and worked in advisory bodies of the WHO and The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. In addition, he was active in development assistance, which taught him how to treat people with respect – and to appreciate what we have in life.

Dr Färber is a doctor by calling and has set up a small health centre in the historic building of the Klosterhof which guests are free to visit. He regularly holds health lectures at the Klosterhof. “We discuss fasting, mindfulness and enjoyment. That’s quite special because we often only truly enjoy life when we are mindful!” he says.

The Alps – a true masterpiece – are right outside the hotel
When you stay at the Klosterhof Alpine Hideaway & Spa, you’ll find yourself itching to lace up your hiking boots and hit the trail. The lovely Klosterhof oak-lined alley is your path to pure nature. Knotty old trees line the trails.

What a joy it is to hike and then hit the spa in Berchtesgaden afterwards. The Klosterhof has the perfect programme no matter the weather – and if you would like to book a guided hike, just ask!

Nature’s masterpieces are so close in all four seasons thanks to our excellent location. Surrounded by luscious green fields, enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the “sleeping witch” and Untersberg mountain.

Look in the other direction and soak up the views of the Hochstaufen or the Lofer mountains whose picturesque peaks are covered in snow, even outside of winter.

Tips for tours in and around Berchtesgaden
Are you a passionate mountain climber or looking for energy and places of power? Have you heard of forest bathing? There is so much to discover around the Klosterhof – with plenty of mindfulness and opportunities for living in the moment.

The “sleeping witch” and traversing the Lattengebirge

Four peaks from the Hallthurm to the Predigtstuhl: from the Hallthurm car park (5-minute drive from the Klosterhof), hike a short distance on the panorama trail.

After about 15 minutes, turn right and head up the Rotofensattel. Follow signs towards Hochschlegel – Predigtstuhl – Dreisesselberg – Karkopf to the Steinerne Agnes (“Stone Agnes”).

There, take the trail to the ramshackle Steinbergalm alp. Keep right here and go up the path to the hollow between Dreisesselberg and Karkopf. After about 15 minutes, keep right to reach the peak of the Dreisesselberg mountain. Then head back down to the hollow where the trail meets the ascent (uphill) trail.

Here continue straight ahead on an easy path to the Karkopf. Go back again and keep left to the summit of the Hochschlegel. Descend over the summit hollow to the Schlegelmulde-Alm, and on to the summit of the Predigtstuhl (AV Trail no. 469/404A).

From there, hike to the mountain station of the Predigtstuhlbahn cable car which will take you easily back down into the valley. From the valley station, it is a 5-minute walk to the bus stop for buses back to Hallthurm.

Duration: approx. 6 hours, 9.75 km – Elevation gain: 1,150 m ascent, 300 m descent

The Hochstaufen: Bad Reichenhall’s highest mountain
This hike starts at the Padinger Alm car park (10-minute drive from the Klosterhof). Follow the path that runs past the car park uphill until it ends and transitions into a smaller trail. After a longer section of the trail in the forest, you will reach a tree-free, rocky passage.

Just after a long curve to the left, you will reach a bench at a scenic lookout that provides a great spot to take a break and enjoy the panoramic views to the left. The trail then heads above the treeline and through rocky sections with hardly any plants.

The trail becomes a bit greener at Bartlmahd, then climbs towards the west ridge of the Hochstaufen. The path over the ridge is technically not difficult to walk, but it does have some quite exposed passages.

This hike requires surefootedness and a head for heights, but the beautiful views are reward for the difficult ascent. The path then becomes less exposed and leads to Reichenhaller Haus, the highest mountain hut in the Chiemgau Alps. From here, it’s just a few metres to the summit.

Duration: 5-6 hours, 10 km – Elevation gain: 1,330 m

From Großgmain up to the Untersberg
This hike starts at the Bruchhäusl, an old quarry in Großgmain (a 5-minute drive from the Klosterhof), directly in the foothills of the Untersberg. Hike uphill for about 2 hours until you reach the ramshackle Vierkaser Alm alp.

The path is rarely used by hikers, and you won’t meet many people along the way – perfect if you want to enjoy the peace and quiet of the great outdoors.

From there, hike over the Ochsenkopf to Mitterberg and continue on until you reach the Stöhrhaus hut on the Untersberg. Here you will be treated to incredible views of Salzburger Land. If you want, you can take the Untersberg cable car back down.

Duration: approx. 5-7 hours, 8 km – Elevation gain: 1,500 m ascent, 314 m descent

It’s easy to explore Berchtesgadener Land on e-bikes starting right at the hotel. The Klosterhof is one of the Movelo hire stations in Bad Reichenhall and Bayerisch Gmain.

Bike tours around the Klosterhof
The Untersberg round: a border-crossing tour
Starting at the Klosterhof, ride uphill to Hallthurn. As soon as you reach the plateau, continue on the state road towards Berchtesgaden via Winkel and Bischofswiesen. You will already be able to see the Watzmann and Hagen mountains that surround Lake Königssee.

Follow the German High Alpine Road to Berchtesgaden. From there the path runs steadily slightly downhill along the beautiful Königsseer Ache river, through Marktschellenberg to St Leonhard.

Here you will find yourself in Austria! Continue through Glanegg towards Fürstenbrunn. Then the steepest section of the route begins at the end of Fürstenbrunn village as you ride over the so-called “Wachterl” with its incline of up to 14%.

After several ascents and some descents you will reach Großgmain. Continue through Bayerisch Gmain until you reach the Klosterhof.

Distance: 46 km – Elevation gain: 660 m

Mountain bike to the Steiner Alm alp
Cycle from Bayerisch Gmain towards Bad Reichenhall and from there on to the climatic resort town of Piding. The “Rund um den Högl” (“Around the Högl”) trail runs steadily uphill to the Steiner Alm alp.

The path along the Frillensee lake leads to the Adlgaß restaurant. Here you can fill up on tasty food for the ascent to the Inzeller Höhe and the Fürmannalm alp. From here, you continue down to Anger and through Piding and Bad Reichenhall back to the Klosterhof.

Distance: 37 km – Ascent: 910 m

Berchtesgaden healing salt caverns
Unique in Western Europe, this is an oasis of salt that should not only be seen from the outside: the special salty environment of the healing caverns can alleviate conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, hay fever and sinus infections, as well as psychosomatic ailments such as sleep disorders and tinnitus.

It can even help improve your mood. In addition, it is a treat for your ears: the healing caverns are an interesting venue for concerts. Lake Königssee in Schönau
Surrounded by steep mountains and at the foot of the towering “King Watzmann”, Lake Königssee is one of the most beautiful lakes in Berchtesgadener Land. No trip to Lake Königssee is complete without a boat trip to the St Bartholomä peninsula.

Bayerische Seenschifffahrt takes you across the lake by electric boat – the echos of the trumpet being played on board are truly magical. Or what about a visit to the Röthbach?

We also recommend hiking around the lake – Königssee is Germany’s number one excursion destination and for years has been a much-loved hot-spot for photographers. Please note: it is forbidden to fly drones in the Berchtesgaden National Park.

Eisriesenwelt Ice Cave in Werfen
Experience the fascinating Eisriesenwelt with its massive 45-km-long labyrinth of caves. The ice cave was discovered in 1879 by Salzburg naturalist Anton von Posselt-Czorisch.

In 1920 the researcher’s lodge and the first climbing systems up and into the cave were built to make the experience more convenient for the public.

The first cable car was built in 1955 and an incredible 60 years later it went into well-deserved retirement. The Eisriesenwelt in Werfen in Salzburger Land is open daily from 1 May to 26 October.

Each Saturday, the Klosterhof ski shuttle conveniently takes you to ski resorts within 30 km of the hotel (upon request). A true Bavarian, Klosterhof owner Andreas Färber is a passionate skier and will be happy to share his tips for a great day on the slopes of Bavaria’s and Austria’s best ski resorts.

Explore the snow-covered mountains with tobogganing and sledging – this is truly a fun activity for the whole family! There are two toboggan runs near the Klosterhof: Hirscheckblitz in the village of Ramsau – 22 minutes from the hotel; Obersalzberg toboggan run – 30 minutes from the hotel

Pause for a moment to take it all in: snowshoe hikes are so exciting and yet so calming at the same time. Far from crowds of tourists, the Predigtstuhl mountain (situated practically across the street from the Klosterhof) is home to an incredible alpine winter environment.

Ride up the mountain on the cable car – the views alone will make you smile from ear to ear. A winter wonderland high above Bad Reichenhall awaits you at the top. You can even take the Klosterhof shuttle to the Predigtstuhl cable car station. Our tip: ask our sauna master Schorsch for the best trails. He is a real mountain fan and is happy to fill you in on some secrets!

In the “LiterArt” library, enthusiasm thrives in the form of literature, stories, verbal and non-verbal communication. It is the perfect place for literary and musical inspiration as well as a place of well-being. Dr Andreas Färber holds entertaining lectures on Wednesday evenings, including on health topics.

Readings and introductions to musical works take place here, such as on the occasion of the Salzburg Festival at the in-house festival salon. The library is the centre of the house, a salon for encounters, exchanges and tranquillity. Books of all genres make you want to read and also reflect the thirst for knowledge of the host.

Through its presentation and perspectives, man-made art is at one with Mother Nature’s masterpiece: the mountains never look the same way twice, they change with the seasons, with the time of day.
