Burg Schlitz Afternoon Tea Package

There may be probably as many stories about the origin of an English afternoon-tea as there are tea-blends, however, the following one is definitely the most quoted. Early in the 19th century people in the U.K. used to have only two meals per day: breakfast and dinner.

As legend has it, the 7th Duchess of Bedford assigned her servantry to serve her every day at 5 P.M. a cup of hot tea and some little savouries, as she needed something to appease her growing appetite at that time of the day.

The experience of this little snack was most agreeable to her and quickly developed into a daily routine. Furthermore the Duchess even began to invite her friends to this little tea-ceremony, as to make them acquainted with her newest amusement.

One thing led to another and within a few years the consumption of an afternoon-tea became a social event of the upper-class. Eventually this trend became so popular that tea-houses and coffee-shops began to offer this enjoyment to their guests. Today it is regarded as an essential component of the sophisticated British way of life.

An excursion with a historical Landau-carriage drawn by black-shining noble Frisian horses offers diversion, too. Furthermore, training-courses are offered for ladies to get experienced in riding gracefully with a side-saddle, and also for learning how to play polo.

Dismount and rest
For our guests’ horses we have restored our royal stud in 2008 with loving care and are pleased to offer you horse-boxes including bedding, water, oat and hay for a small extra charge.

The royal stud was built in 1848 by Heinrich von Bassewitz. A wing which functioned as a cinema was added in the 1930ies by Emil von Stauss. Many UfA movies received here their premier. In German Democratic Republic time it was used as storehouse. In 2007 it regained its historical function as royal stud.

It is here that Mecklenburg-Vorpommern opens its heart for you!
Feel embraced by wideness and distance which characterize the 450 acres of our Landscape Park by which Burg Schlitz is surrounded like a lush, green carpet. Its completion took 50 years and followed the model of an English landscape park.

When you walk through this beautiful park you wonder what it was like 200 years ago and who walked the pathes before you. Many people enjoyed the wide-stretched terrain with broad alleys, awe-inspiring old trees, secluded lakes, 50 monuments in the form of obelisks, grottos, columns and countless little places which invite to linger. Even Achim von Arnim, the counts nephew, found inspiration for new works here.

ABSOLUTELY WORTH SEEING
… is the world-renowned “Fountain of the Nymphs”. Designed in 1903 by Walter Schott in the Art Nouveau style, it had originally been created for the fountain courtyard of the Wertheim Department Store in Berlin and acquired by Emil von Stauss who brought it to Burg Schlitz in the 1930ies.

It shows three more or less life-size nymphs of bronze, dancing on the edge of a sandstone-trough around a fountain. It is also called “Fountain of the Dancing Girls” and is unquestionably a jewel of our park. Another original of this fountain can be found in the Central Park of New York.

Right next to the “Fountain of the Nymphs” the “Karolinen Chapel” is located, which has recently been elaborately restored, and which Hans Count von Schlitz had dedicated to his mother-in-law Karoline Imperial Countess von Goertz-Schlitz. For church weddings 70 persons can be accommodated here.

There are altogether 50 monuments which Count von Schlitz had erected in memory of his family, poets or other people particularly dear to him: obelisks, columns, grottos and even lakes. And do not miss the dream-like view of Lake Malchin from our imposing Roetelberg.

Sculpture-Way Burg Schlitz – Goertzhausen
Art in Mecklenburg countryside
Some 200 years after Count von Schlitz changed the face of Mecklenburg Switzerland by his extensive Landscape Park according to his own ideas and personal visions with lasting effect, for instance with special monuments, obelisks and stone-settings, giving it herewith his personal, characteristic and, not least, cultural hallmark, a Sculpture-Way was created which, starting from Burg Schlitz, is stretching wide into the countryside.

With a similar passion for three-dimensional design and with a similar love of the Mecklenburg countryside, the two artists Wilfried Duwentester and Bernd Uiberall have been active in the direct neighbourhood of Burg Schlitz for the last 8 years.

The project “Sculpture-Way Burg Schlitz-Goertzhausen” takes up the Count’s vision and adapts it for an encounter with temporary sculptures. The sculptures “live” in the wide space of the landscape and interact with the nature and the already existing cultural area.

The sculptures are positioned at prominent places along the way between Burg Schlitz and Goertzhausen and appear to be a part of the landscape.

Cooking Classes with Sabine Teubler
Thanks to wide-stretched hunting grounds surrounding this stately mansion in the heart of Mecklenburg Switzerland, Burg Schlitz can look back on a long tradition of venison dishes. It is not uncommon that hunting guests return with rich prey which is to be expertly carved and prepared.

No problem for kitchen-chef Sabine Teubler. She is having quite a knack for game, whipping up again and again new venison-dishes onto the plates of our hotel guests. Step by step she has acquired her profound and stunning knowledge of everything what may show up in front of a sporting gun.

Day by day new challenges are to be mastered by this trained cook. Pheasants and ducks, royal stags, tender little roe deer and an abundance of wild boar have already been bestowed on her.

Gratefully she has accepted everything and mastered her job with flying colours. Her results are convincing, speak for themselves and leave no margin of doubt. A flavour that makes you wish for more.

Her tips & tricks and her acquired knowledge of everything connected with venison dishes Sabine Teubler gladly passes on, for example in her venison cooking-classes. As individual as you will find everything on Burg Schlitz, just as individual are her cooking-classes.

However, there is no need to enter your name on a long list months in advance, and there are no fixed subjects, either. Whoever feels like getting a taste of Sabine Teubler’s game-kitchen simply calls and arranges a cooking appointment with our castle-cook.

As her time permits, even a single guest is welcome to join her in her kitchen. The maximum number of participants is 20 people. We charge per day per person from EUR 199.00 onwards, according to the number of participants, including – apart from all necessary preparatory work – a final menu for which you can also invite friends for an extra charge.

WELCOME OBELISK
It was erected in 1816 at the foot of the access road to Burg Schlitz, opposite the tavern “Zum Goldenen Frieden” and bears the following inscription (translation from Latin into English): “Dear guest, it is my wish that you, while walking up, may hand over your sorrows to this vessel.

Hans Count Schlitz 1816 ” The original of this vessel is lost since 1945. Everybody walking up to Burg Schliz was to hand over his sorrow to this vessel by touching its base with his hand.

In the upper part of the obelisk the Count’s family-motto and life-philosophy is inscribed with the following initials: wwwv which stands for “wuensche wenig, wirke viel” and means: “wish small, act big”

OBELISK OF THE THREE WISHES
The first wish refers to the circumstance that at that time Mecklenburg was still occupied by Napoleon. The second wish is based on the fact that Count von Schlitz was founder of the Mecklenburg Agricultural Association. The third wish refers to the situation that at that time Germany was split up into app. 300 small principalities.

It was erected in 1812. The three wishes are as follows:

  • Peace for the Fatherland
  • Blessing for Farming
  • Fraternity for the Germans

BURIAL GROUND
In 1825 the gate for the future burial ground was erected, but regrettably not finished. The inscription reads as follows: Youth’s abundant energy, Joy’s jubilant sound, Honour’s radiant brilliancy – For the ennoblement of this earthy clod I sacrificed them.

What I have created may guarantee for you, my successors, an abundance of enjoyment! And for me your gratitude! On the stone’s backside the Count’s date of birth is inscribed, as well as the initials of his motto

The following date (14.08.1822) cannot be interpreted so far. Presumably it is the date of the Count’s joining the Freemason Lodge, as several Masonic symbols can be found all over the park and the building.

TEACHER STONE
It was erected in 1813. For the faithful creators of my youth this stone was placed in gratitude by H. Count Schlitz 1813

The names of these faithful creators are inscribed on the front side, which are: Otto Meier, headmaster of the Joachimsthal Grammar School, and professor Eberhard, teacher of philosophy at the University of Halle.

AMALIEN STONE
It was Amalien’s enchantment alone that was capable of giving higher charm to the dreariness of Suelz. We do not go into detail, whether this stone was set in memory of a charming spa romance at the moor bath of Suelz.

LOUISEN STONE
Along the way to the Luisen Lake the Louisen Stone can be found which Hans Count von Schlitz had dedicated to his wife.

“Named after the mistress of this castle, after the fair life companion who faithfully shared my sorrows and my joy. The best, what has been erected here, was due to her. 1828”

The inscription reads as follows: To Luise, the fair life companion, this lay out is dedicated and named Louisen Lake

REGENSBURG MONUMENT
It was erected in 1808 and is equipped with the following two inscriptions:

Providence protected those dear to me but iron not the fighters H Graf Schlitz 1814

In the tempest of Regensburg, where those lived who were dearest to me, two combatants fighting against each other left behind this armour while falling in battle on April 22nd 1809.

The armour had been kept in an alcove on top of the monument and is completely corroded in the meantime. The opposite side shows the family crest of Hans Count von Schlitz.

BLUECHER MONUMENT
Erected in 1817, consisting of two parts, whereas the major part depicts Napoleon’s exile on St. Helena. The inscription reads as follows:

The Demon which held Teutonia’s fetters until recently, is chained on a distant, rocky island. The power of delusion is broken and justice and truth triumphed on June 18th and November 20th 1815

Until 1954 a marble bust of Napoleon had been kept behind an iron grid which was destroyed. The second part of the monument contained a bust of Bluecher which was lost in 1945 and recently found in a former latrine. The bust is now kept inside the building.

Art & Culture – Interiors
According to designs by architect Helmut Riemann, the “Deutsche Werkstaetten Hellerau” have manufactured furniture and interiors of highest craftsmanship which are not only custom-made for the varying sizes of our hotel-rooms, but are also in perfect harmony with the German Biedermeier-style, which was the fashionable style of the time of Hans Count von Schlitz.

The workmanship is of highest quality, for which only fine woods like walnut, ash, ice-birch or cherry were selected. In particular the beech-wood veneers are of outstanding quality.

Though adapted to an antique style, these interiors meet all modern requirements: From make-up mirrors, towel racks or wooden Kleenex-boxes, over little bathroom stools, beadheads or sideboards, to writing desks with a leather-inlay writing area, bar cabinets and in-built wardrobes, they all match perfectly into the noble ambience of this place.

Information concerning the “Fountain Of The Nymphs”, also called “Fountain of the three dancing Girls”
Walter Schott (1861 – 1938), Professor and Sculptor at the Berlin Academy, was one of the main representatives of the Neo-Baroque School of Sculpture at the time of Kaiser Wilhelm II. He created various monuments and sculptures for the Berlin Cathedral, as well as sculptural elements for the New Palais in Potsdam.

His most important work, however, is the world-renowned “Fountain of the Nymphs”, created in 1903 in the Art-Nouveau style. It is also called “Fountain of the three Dancing Girls” and cast in bronze.

More originals can be found in the Central Park of New York, in San Francisco, Antwerp and a diplomatic villa in Berlin. We are particularly proud of being able to host an original of this fountain in our park.

Dr. Emil Georg von Stauss, head of the board of the Deutsche Bank and chairman of the UfA film company in Berlin, was proprietor of Burg Schlitz from 1932 – 1945 and acquired this fountain in 1934 for his summer residence.

In summer the “Fountain of the Nymphs” is appreciated by rare species of birds as their bird-bath, and occasionally a frog does not mind a refreshment, either. It offers a special sight for the visitors of our English Landscape Park at any season.

The delicately spraying jet of water sprinkles the life-size figures of the dancing girls, giving them an enchanting dynamic by which they seem to float as light as feathers and appear to be clothed with almost translucent robes.
