Parkhotel Holzner, built in 1908, is located 1,200 meters above sea level on Ritten mountain, and offers a stunning view of pastures and forests, lovely hills, and rugged mountain peaks. It is an alpine refuge surrounded by fresh mountain air and ancient giant trees, and is only a 15-minutes cable-car ride from the city center of Bolzano.

With deliberate changes in style and unexpected delights for all generations, the historical house proves that a book shouldn’t be judged by its cover. It offers an incomparable holiday experience, boasting Alpine Art Nouveau and contemporary architecture, wild nature and urban flair, children’s laughter and timeless recreation.

For almost 120 years, the Holzner has been a place of modern zeitgeist, a haven of joy for all generations. Leisure is celebrated as a virtue, so that, depending on age, desire, and mood, guests can play, feast, hike, relax, or simply marvel. A holiday at the Holzner is a delightful experience for all senses, for adults and children alike.

Over four generations the Holzner family has created a place that is characterized by finding joy in hospitality and diversity. It is a place of contrasting ideas that consistently complement each other and create convincing synergies: Cosmopolitan and deep-rooted, timeless and cutting-edge, playful and dignified, body and soul, big and small.

The view reaches far at the Holzner. Situated on a natural terrace on the southern slope of the Renon plateau, the view falls unhindered on the magnificent South Tyrolean mountains: the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site of the Dolomites in the southeast, the soft hills and vineyards in the southern lowlands, the majestic peaks of the distant Ortles group in the west.

There is nothing to stop the eye from roaming into the distance. Nothing that limits the view. And so you might just find yourself lying in the 10,000 m² park in the shade of hundred-year-old giant trees, sit on a park bench in a sea of flowers and let your gaze wander and your soul unwind.

THE HOLZNER FAMILY
In 1908, the Holzner was opened under the management of the young hotel director Hans Holzner from Merano. At that time, no one could have guessed that almost 120 years later it would still be a house of hospitality, offering young and old a place of recreation and well-being.

And not even Hans Holzner himself would have dared to dream seeing his family governing the hotel for four generations to come. The Holzner has been family-owned for 4 generations now, for almost 120 years.

Our present and our future are defined by the turbulent past of our region, South Tyrol. We are aware of our corporate and human responsibility and want to help shape the social life of our town and community through sustainable, open-minded action, always with future generations in mind.

THE HISTORY
The only constant is change, they say. And the Holzner makes no exception: since its opening in 1908, the hotel has been subject to constant, often drastic changes. The fact that there is no condominium, chain hotel or – who knows what could have happened – nothing at all here today is thanks to the people who have come and gone, and to no small portion of luck.

Thanks to diligence, commitment and many a stroke of luck, the Holzner has retained its original charm over the years and over time has become a holiday retreat for all generations.

Hans Holzner, an experienced hotel manager, and his wife Maria, née Krawany from Mödling near Vienna, became directors of the Oberbozen Hotel, which had been built by the Rittnerbahn AG. He was able to buy the hotel from the company as early as 1911.

After his early death in 1939, his eldest son Herbert took over the management of the hotel together with his mother. The war and post-war period were marked by privation and constantly recurring rumours about the sale of the hotel.

It was only after Herbert’s death in 1968, when his nephew Hans took over the hotel together with his parents Wilhelm and Herta, that the house could be renovated and restored piece by piece.

When Hans and his wife Marianne had already brought six children into the world in the 90s, the Holzner was increasingly transformed into a hotel for families. In 2008, their third son Wolfgang and his wife Monika, née Waldner from Schenna, took over the family business in what is now the fourth generation.

In 1906, the construction of the cog railway from Bolzano to Renon and the associated hotel on a natural terrace on the southern slope of Oberbozen began on behalf of the Renon Railway Inc.

The builders Musch and Lun from Merano entrusted engineer Joseph Riehl with the planning, implementation and construction management of the mammoth project. A first draft of the hotel was rejected because it envisioned a project that was too urban in appearance.

The second design was in the so-called Swiss Alpine style, an Art Nouveau style adapted to the Alpine region. Plans by the architect brothers Ludwig for an extension of the hotel were already available in 1912, but they were discarded with the outbreak of the First World War.

It was not until the late 1960s and early 1970s that significant changes and renovations were made to the hotel again: the utility rooms were completely renovated, the former summer house was given central heating, all rooms were equipped with their own bathrooms, the open breakfast veranda on the south side of the house was converted into an enclosed dining room, and the large staircase leading to the park was replaced by a terrace. In 2008, the indoor and outdoor pool was built below the house after a design by architect Ulrich Weger.

In 2013, Wolfgang and Monika Holzner launched a competition for architects, each of whom put down on paper their vision for the Holzner in the decades to come.

In 2014, the first construction lot of the competition winners BaumeisterWolf from Brixen was implemented: Once again, the Holzner’s utility rooms were adapted to modern requirements, the 1908 restaurant found its place on the north side of the building, an elevator and a new staircase were built within the framework of the fire protection ordinance, and a new version of the tower that had already graced the Holzner in its founding days was erected.

In 2018, the sustainable project was completed with the Bergmeister Wing with underground parking and Eden Suites, as well as the Liberty Spa.

ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECE
In the Holzner, Alpine Art Nouveau meets the clear lines of contemporary architecture. As it is the tradition at the Holzner, the extensions implemented from 2013 to 2018 are a thoughtful continuation of the existing building. „The historical building is at the centre of the interventions, with the new structure taking a back seat in favour of the existing house.

Old and new merge into a symbiosis and thus grow into a unity,“ the BergmeisterWolf architectural duo explains the underlying approach. Selected materials and clear design draw a continuous line through all the interiors and combine old and new to form a harmonious union.

The new elements quietly integrate into the existing ensemble, extend the Art Nouveau building and open a dialogue with the surrounding, carefully tamed landscape.

The extension of the top floor and the rebuilding of the historic tower were an important part of the reconstruction, the main premise of which was the search for a timeless architecture, for a link between past and present.

Today, the Holzner is a house of contrasts, which harmoniously join forces in every area and create convincing synergies: Body and soul. Art Nouveau and exposed concrete. Wild nature and urban flair. Alpine glow and Orient. Big and small. Timeless and in tune with the times.

THE CHARM OF ART NOUVEAU
Parkhotel Holzner is a place of timeless beauty, where Alpine Art Nouveau meets modern architecture. Handpicked interior materials stand for enduring quality and sustainability.
For 110 years, the Holzner has been a haven of peace and pleasure for young and old.

Art Nouveau ornaments from the year of foundation 1908 flow seamlessly into the clean lines of modern architecture. A fine tradition has developed and established itself from the house’s long history, and today, The Holzner still embraces its historically grounded practice of providing for your body and soul.

RICH IN CONTRAST
In collaboration with the architect studio BergmeisterWolf, over the past five years, the Holzner has been expanded into a hotel resort, which meets the needs of every member of a family while preserving its original charm.

In order to combine the two contrasting architectural styles harmoniously, the design process was based on creating a unified whole, whose value will last for generations to come. Choice materials, which have already been used 110 years ago, and consistent quality awareness ascertain that the Holzner remains a house of lasting beauty.

PROJECT 2014: BACK TO THE FUTURE
“The Holzner’s aesthetics as a building of Alpine Art Nouveau are now timeless.” this was the quote to which the architect duo Bergmeisterwolf from Brixen referred when they took part in the architectural competition announced by Wolfgang and Monika Holzner in 2012.

Their bold project, which was intended to foreshadow a possible, architectural development of the house for the next decades, was convincing all along the line. The first step of the joint project was already realized the following year.

SUSTAINABLE THINKING
We love our beautiful hotel and the magnificent South Tyrolean cultural and natural landscape into which it is nestled. For over a century, four generations of the Holzner family have had the opportunity to grow and develop here.

Today, we feel “at home” in the world and that it is our duty now more than ever to ensure that also future generations – be it our children or those of our guests or staff – continue to have room to grow, for personal development and happiness.

EDEN FAMILY
The Eden Family combination consists of two junior suites with a connecting door and is our biggest room category. It is therefore particularly suitable for large families.

Facing South with its own private garden and terrace, you will be enjoying the breathtaking view of the Dolomites, UNESCO World Heritage Site. These suites offer a lot of space to relax for all family members.

EDEN SUITE
The Eden Suites boast spaciosness, views of the surrounding mountains and a pleasant intimacy surrounded by nature. Modern and cozy, decorated with refined fabrics and wood, these suites meet the highest comfort requirements.

With two separate rooms, separate bathroom and toilet, large walk-in wardrobe and private terrace with garden, these suites offer a lot of space for families.

LATEMAR
Our family suites Latemar are located on the ground floor of the main house. They have been completely renovated in 2022. The modern ambience is cozy and stylish, with selected fabrics and lots of wood.

All family members will be delighted by the contemporary yet cozy ambience in two bedrooms and the living area in the winter garden with private park access and views of the magnificent South Tyrolean mountains.

ROSENGARTEN
The historical Rosengarten suites in our main building consist of two separate rooms, and are therefore ideal for connoisseur families. They are located on the south side of the house on the third floor and thus have a particularly breathtaking view from the balcony of the South Tyrolean mountains and the natural World Heritage Site of the Dolomites. Most of the furniture in the rooms is of historical art-nouveau origin.

JUGENDSTIL
The double rooms Jugendstil in the main building, which were fully renovated in 2023, now boast plank floors made of local ash, stylish bathrooms and the soothing colour scheme of Art Nouveau. The careful restoration of the rooms complements the original Art Nouveau furnishings for a unique feel-good ambience.

All Jugendstil rooms are located on the south side of the house and have a balcony with a breathtaking view of the South Tyrolean mountains and the natural World Heritage Site of the Dolomites. Guests who appreciate authentic art nouveau and the soothing views of the mountains will feel particularly at home in these rooms.

DINING
The excellent cuisine of head chef Stephan Zippl and his team finds its appropriate setting in the relaxed atmosphere of the historic house and the courteous, warm service. Within the context of our New Tradition Cuisine, the best products sourced from small producers in the region are set to take centre stage in the gourmet half board.

The shorter delivery routes, increase in the share of organic products, conservation of resources and promotion of biodiversity and animal welfare enable us to achieve our climate goal of reducing the carbon footprint of our culinary offerings from 360 to 180 tonnes of CO2. Look forward to first-class, seasonal products from organic production that taste better and are better.

Dining at the Holzner is an extraordinary experience: In wide halls with gleaming chandeliers, sitting on original Thonet chairs and using silver cutlery from 1908.

Whether you sit at a large family table in the historic dining room or – more intimately – at a small table in the Art Nouveau restaurant, a feeling of beauty and lightness will inspire your culinary experience, while emperors and ancestors smile benevolently down from their pictures.

At the Holzner, our guests can look forward to culinary delights from our award-winning kitchen from early morning until late at night. First of all, there is the fabulous and rich breakfast buffet with fresh bread, South Tyrolean bacon and cheese, delicious jams, honey and farmer’s butter, fresh fruit, free-range eggs from the farmer in the village, freshly prepared to order by our breakfast chef and much more.

In the evening, we serve multi-course gourmet menus from our excellent kitchen, accompanied by a colourful selection of seasonal salads with homemade dressings, high-quality oils and vinegars and a selection of regional, fine cheeses and fresh bread.

Even little gourmets can feast to their heart’s content at the Holzner. After a delicious breakfast that leaves nothing to be desired, they can refresh themselves all day long at the juice bar in the play area, and in the evening a very special children’s menu awaits them, served either at the children’s table or at the table with their parents.

Based on the gourmet menu for adults, our kitchen team prepares fresh, yet child-friendly delicacies and comfort dishes from the best ingredients of the region. For our youngest guests, we are happy to prepare fresh baby food from natural and healthy ingredients.

In the warm months, on request, our guests will dine both in the morning and in the evening on the wonderful panoramic terrace with a view of the greenery and the South Tyrolean mountains. In the afternoons, tea and homemade cake are served here, while cheerfully leafing through newspapers and reading quietly. A place of well-being for body and soul.

A coffee in the morning, a small snack at lunch time, a tea in the afternoon or an aperitif and a glass of champagne in the evening: The charming wood paneling, the majestic Art-Nouveau luminaires and the comfortable armchairs create the enchanting atmosphere that makes our bar the heart of the Holzner.

GOURMET RESTAURANT 1908
In addition to the hotel’s award-winning cuisine, the Holzner’s Michelin star restaurant 1908 is open for you in the evenings.

The artists and pioneers of Jugendstil were visionaries and advocates of a new way of life when the Holzner was founded in 1908. Like them, we believe in the good and fight for the best. Thus, the 1908 bears its name for a good eason: it is new in the old; a place of freedom, curiosity and joie de vivre.

And you can feel this in the contemporary architecture of BergmeisterWolf, which calmly pays tribute to the historic walls. You can taste it in every dish from Stephan Zippl’s kitchen, where he creates surprising compositions from the best regional ingredients as part of his “Re:vier” cuisine.

Stephan Zippl draws inspiration from the best regional products, which serve as a starting point for his delicious creations. Thus, the cuisine at Restaurant 1908 was named Re:vier. In German, Revier means territory – representing our land from which we collect the best regional produce; whereas vier means four – standing for the four elements forming the fundament of the 1908’s cuisine.

Within the framework of the Re:vier cuisine, sustainability is more than just seasonally bound regionalism: We care about supporting small, local cycles, a good and fair cooperation with our suppliers and the prudent use of our resources.

Where possible, we try to source our products from producers in the immediate vicinity. For those few products that are not available to us in South Tyrol, we pay even more attention to quality, sustainability and fair production.

THE WINE EXPERIENCE
At Holzner you can enjoy South Tyrol’s finest wines in an incomparable ambience – which is confirmed by a jury of experts who awarded Holzner the Wine Culture Prize of the Province of South Tyrol.

For years, our efforts have been dedicated to the constant improvement of our wine list, excellent advice and unique wine experience through regular tastings in our wine cellar. In our wine list, the focus is clearly on South Tyrolean wines. South Tyrol is not only an autonomous region in political terms, but also as a wine-growing region.

With its varied soil conditions and the climatic differences up and down the country, this results in an extraordinary range of wines, including the three autochthonous varieties Vernatsch, Lagrein and Gewürztraminer.

THE GOURMET SHOP
You will experience competent, professional service and passion for what we do in our well-stocked wine shop. Well over 250 different South Tyrolean and Italian wines along with oil, balsamic and jam specialties leave you spoiled for choice.

Take a piece of South Tyrol home with you; our pick-up market is open for you daily from 8.00 to 19.00, on Tuesday and Friday afternoons our qualified service staff is available in the store with advice and assistance.

THE LIBERTY SPA
The artists and pioneers of Art Nouveau were revolutionaries; advocates of a new way of life that focused on individuality and inspiring beauty in all areas. The Liberty Spa lives up to its name: it is the new in the established; a place with the freedom to explore one’s inner and outer beauty.

“Back to natural forms and processes,” claimed the Art Nouveau artists and so do we, with the goal of finding ourselves without forgetting the world around us. The balance between inner serenity and outer freedom can be found in special places like the Liberty Spa: A place of timeless regeneration in the heart of the Holzner.

LIBERTY STYLE
“I was determined not to follow existing fashion but to create new ones,” said Sir Arthur Lasenby Liberty. With these words, the merchant from London summed up what the art movement at the turn of the 19th century was all about, and Art Nouveau in England and Italy was named after him: Liberty Style.

A style that defined itself as a life revolution; a response to the soullessness of industrialization, to the pessimism and nervousness of the fin de siècle. Liberty Style was aiming to create an individual that was self-determined and free, and found expression in the search for a new language of shapes and the connection of art and life.

THE HAMAM
Let yourself be carried away to the magical world of the Hamam. Deeply sensual processes will free your mind, and your body will become light. Experience the illumination and deep pleasure of a centuries-old ritual brought to life today at the Liberty Spa.

You are invited to complete an independent Hamam circuit with Rhassoul. We will provide you with Pestemal, Kese and soap, so you can exfoliate and wash yourself, before the concluding Rhassoul with nourishing mineral muds at the end of the Hamam circuit. Or let our Tellaks, the bath masters and mistresses, pamper with a professional Hamam ceremony.

THE SAUNAS
Our sauna area is composed of panoramic sauna and Finnish sauna in the cabin. The panoramic sauna is open daily from 2 pm until 8 pm. Every day at 6 pm, the traditional sauna steam treatment takes place in the panoramic sauna. The finnish sauna in the log cabin will be heated on request only.

TREATMENTS
The treatments at the Liberty Spa have been individually designed for the four Liberty experience spheres: Thus, there are treatments that are committed to vitality, intended to give strength and openness just like the dynamic flowing lines of the Liberty Style.

Other treatments are focused on beauty, a basic need of the healthy mind, and want to bring true beauty to all areas of life. Rituals of purification are dedicated to liberation, to free from restrictions, to make the body light and the thoughts clear. And last but not least, there are treatments that celebrate sensuality as a facilitator of the joy of being, love and happiness.

THE SONG FROM AFAR
Like a song from afar, the most comprehensive Hamam ceremony embraces and stimulates the senses, luring you into unimaginable regions and gently pervading the mind and body.

Indulge in this sensual, all-embracing experience that combines peeling massage, lather massage, head wash and head massage, and full body oiling into a ceremony of sensual devotion and deep relaxation. Let yourself be carried away to unknown shores by the song from afar, and step back into the world freed and pure, relaxed and vibrant.

THE SWIMMING POOL
The extraordinarily beautiful outdoor pool of the spa area at the Holzner seems to flow directly into the surrounding mountains. It looks like a clear mountain lake amidst the majestic backdrop of the Dolomites.

The clear, modern architecture of the wellness area creates an exciting contrast to the historic art nouveau structure of the Parkhotel. Experience timeless beauty, soothing peace and the rippling sound of the water.

Our pool area is located on the south side of the house and opens the view on fields and gentle hills, in the distance the breathtaking peaks of the Dolomites shimmer.

The indoor pool with a pool length of 12 meters and the outdoor infinity pool with a pool length of 16 meters are heated all year round – thanks to our bio-heating plant, which makes this comfort possible also in terms of sustainability. A bath basket with bath towels and bathrobes is ready for you in your room.

Blessed with the natural beauty of our surroundings, the splendid view at the Holzner has evolved into a thoughtful vision. From 2022, your vacation at the Holzner is climate neutral. We received the Condé Nast Johansens Award for Excellence in the category “Best for green practices” for our sustainability concept.

The interconnected pools are open daily from 7 am to 9 pm. From the outdoor pool you will enjoy the breathtaking view of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site. Toddlers splash around in the two small baby pools, one of which is indoors and one by the outdoor pool.

There are comfortable sun loungers by the outdoor and indoor pools, further oases of peace can be found on the sunbathing lawn, in the family relaxation room with a view of the greenery and the South Tyrolean mountains with direct access to the sunbathing lawn and in the garden relaxation room with a view of the magnificent flower and herb garden.
