There’s nothing like The Ivy Hotel. Gorgeous, romantic and welcoming, The Ivy is a bastion of world-class hospitality in a historic Mount Vernon mansion. Seventeen beautiful guest rooms and suites, charming public spaces, a small luxury spa, and our acclaimed culinary concept, Magdalena, A Maryland Bistro.

The property is yours. Take your coffee in the garden, choose a book from the library, try your hand at the piano or the billiards table. Just beyond our doors, the city unfurls: the charming streets of Mount Vernon, the vibrant waterfront, boutiques, galleries, theaters and coffee shops.

THE HISTORY
In 1889, John Gilman, prosperous banker and industrialist, commissioned a mansion in Mount Vernon, Baltimore’s most prestigious neighborhood. He chose architect Charles Carson for the job, a master of design who had recently completed Baltimore’s Grand Masonic Venue and the opulent Methodist Church on Mt. Vernon Square.

Gilman asked Carson to build him a house to speak of wealth, power and taste, from its inlaid floors to its turreted slate roof. But Gilman also wanted a home. Its rooms should be intimate, its fireplaces welcoming, and its tall windows should frame the charming streetscape.

The mansion was raised on the leafy corner of Biddle and North Calvert Streets, neighbored on all sides by handsome brick and stone residences. But as fate would have it, Gilman did not live to enjoy his new home, dying suddenly just before the house was complete.

Mrs. Gilman lived at the the Biddle Street mansion for several years, then sold it to a man named William Painter, and his amiable wife Harriet. William was a wildly successful inventor, the holder of more than 100 patents, and the president of the Crown Cork and Seal Co., manufacturer of bottle caps, corks and closures of all kinds.

The Painters were very sociable and philanthropic, hosting debutant balls and society events, dedicating parks and statues. The Painters and their three children divided their time between the house on Biddle Street and an opulent summer home in Guilford. Father and son were great fans of the work of fellow Baltimorean Edgar Allan Poe, and made sure to send birthday flowers to his grave every year.

When William passed on, Harriet built a children’s hospital in his name in the city. Soon afterwards, she sold the mansion to Dr. Thomas Futcher, a Canadian physician and noted diagnostician recruited to join Johns Hopkins, and he set up office and family in the Biddle Street house.

The Futchers lived and worked there quietly for years. The Great Depression rolled in, the neighborhood changed, and the mansion was gifted to the Baltimore Parks and Recreation Department by Robert Garrett, its longtime chairman (and one of America’s first Olympic gold medalists). Finally, in the early 1980s, Mayor William Schaefer decided to use the now-empty – but still beautiful – house for hosting visiting dignitaries.

Today, after an extraordinary update and total rehabilitation, the house is as grand and glorious as ever: garlanded in ivy, high windows shining, turrets rising above the trees and gardens blossoming below.

The attention lavished upon it more than a century ago by architect Charles Carson is today evident at every turn, from its leaded glass windows to its carved wood wainscoting, 23 individual fireplaces, green marble mined from local quarries, and a magnificent central staircase that climbs three stories past stained glass toward the radiance of the original skylights at the top, like an ascent to heaven.

ROOMS & SUITES
The Ivy Hotel has eight airy, light-filled suites and nine beautiful bedrooms. Each bed is fitted with dreamy 400-thread count Frette sheets, a gas fireplace and a lavish bathroom with heated limestone floor.

Some accommodations offer a corner turret with a view of Mount Vernon, some a balcony over the leafy courtyard, some a grand octagonal living room. Each has a character and charm all its own. At any time, a call downstairs summons a pot of tea, a glass of wine, a midnight snack – whatever strikes your fancy.

SUITE ONE
Luxury Suite One centers on a grand, octagonal sitting room with a decorative fireplace and a large private terrace overlooking the courtyard. The separate bedroom has a canopied four-poster king bed; while the wonderful bathroom has a soaking tub, walk-in shower and a luxurious heated French limestone floor.

SUITE TWO
Suite Two is large and airy, with a decorative fireplace and a gracious dining area set before the tall living room windows. A second decorative fireplace waits in the bedroom, across from the four-poster king bed. Steps away, the bathroom offers a walk-in shower and a deep soaking tub.

SUITE EIGHTEEN
Luxury Suite Eighteen is a magnificent two-story suite that spans the second and third floors of The Ivy, with a living area, fireplace and powder room on the lower level and the bedroom and bathroom on the upper level. Adjoining the Ivy Spa, Suite Eighteen is the only guest facility in the tower — a very private and most wonderful retreat.

ROOM SIX
Mansion Room Six, the original premier bedroom of the house, is a large, light-filled room with a fireplace and its original, plaster filigree ceiling. The room can connect through a private hallway with Suite Seven to create a large two-bedroom suite.

ROOM ELEVEN
Guest Room Eleven is a cozy but very romantic room with a king size bed, fireplace and sitting /dining area. This room can connect to Room Ten via a private hallway, if you wish. There is a single vanity in the lovely limestone bathroom with a deep soaking tub and separate shower.

DINING
Magdalena, A Maryland Bistro, features refined, “from-scratch” bistro fare driven by the bounty of the Chesapeake Bay region. The seasonally-evolving menu celebrates the finest local ingredients, sustainable values and culinary craftsmanship resulting in dishes brimming with character.

Head Chef Scott Bacon’s ethos is rooted in “nose-to-tail” cooking, thoughtfully sourcing as close to home as possible with farmers and fishers as friends. Drawing inspiration from organic growing and foraging methods alongside his own Black experience and British background, Chef Bacon’s care and craft is present on every plate.

Located on the ground floor of Mount Vernon’s Ivy Hotel, Magdalena’s newly imagined interior balances neighborhood charm and modern elegance.

Each of the five handsomely adorned dining spaces exhibit an organic yet refined approach to design, with classic bistro touches throughout. The courtyard garden welcomes guests for outdoor dining in a sanctuary like oasis that feels like the best kept secret in Baltimore city.

Other dining rooms include The Garden Room, which looks out onto The Ivy’s walled Courtyard; the intimate, romantic Treasury – where sterling and crystal were once kept under lock and key; the vaulted, brick-floored Robert Parker Wine Cellar; the cozy and private Tasting Room; and the welcoming, convivial Bar.

DRINKING
Magdalena’s cocktail program offers culinary-forward libations with a focus on rare spirits, small batch concoctions and hyper-seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices. Every drink is carefully composed and tells a passionate and often historic story, sending the sipper on an enthralling expedition to another time and place.

An award-winning whiskey collection and Wine Spectator recognized wine list await the curious to the seasoned collector. Our team delights in education and sharing knowledge with those who seek it. We are dedicated to creating lasting memories through exceptional hospitality to locals and travelers from near and far.

AFTERNOON TEA
Afternoon Tea is a beloved tradition at The Ivy. Choose a seat anywhere in the living room, library or conservatory and tiers of sweet and savory treats – and a pot of piping hot brewed tea – will soon appear beside you. Life is very good indeed.

THE SPA
The Spa at The Ivy is a small and perfect sanctuary on the The Ivy Hotel’s second floor, a jewel box of comfort, warmth and well-being. Natural health and vitality are the guiding principles at the Spa. Our treatments and massage expertise will indulge you in an experience that is restful, euphoric, and unrivaled among spas in Baltimore.

At The Spa at The Ivy, we recognize that every guest is unique. And although we have a treatment menu from which to choose, a simple conversation with your massage therapist, pinpointing your needs and preferences, allows your massage therapist to tailor your treatment for the most beneficial and relaxing experience.

You may also bring the spa to your private quarters with an in-room massage. Whether an herbal rub-down after a day of meetings or a beauty blitz before a big event, the therapists’ focus is wholly you.
