The location known from the ancient times as Kastion/Castrum/Castiloni is situated in Mužolini Donji, between Buje and Krasica. This fort and its surroundings were always a secret safe place for the locals. Fertile valleys and fresh water, olives and wine, all prerequisites for a good life.

A small Romanesque chapel was named after St Cantianus. The fortress is long gone, for centuries now, and the only thing remaining are the chapel foundations. But nature has stayed the same. It is still a secret place and a starting point for all travelers who come to explore and enjoy Istria.

Istria, the ancient land of rich history, picturesque towns and a long coastline, a green patch of land surrounded by clear blue sea, is the largest Croatian peninsula and the closest Mediterranean destination for most of the European countries.

San Canzian Residence Grožnjan
If it were only possible, our hotel would be located in Grožnjan, in our opinion the most beautiful village in Istria, only a few kilometres away as the crow flies. However, since we cannot move the hotel there, we have turned one of the most beautiful houses in Grožnjan into a small residence with full hotel service.

Our idea is that you, like its residents, are in the centre of this small, picturesque town while enjoying the luxury of our hotel and having the opportunity of benefiting from all our services. To make your experience complete, there is a parking space in Grožnjan and a free all-day shuttle service to our hotel.

Luciano Restaurant was named after one of our most important suppliers of authentic Istrian products.

Along with premium local, preferably eco, ingredients the most important factor for the success of our restaurant is the team. Our team is distinguished by its precise, but not pretentious cooking, where the main stars are the supreme local ingredients.

Exquisite breakfast is created from local and predominately organic ingredients made in house, followed by a la carte lunch offering modern presentation of traditional Istrian dishes like Istrian stew “maneštra”, homemade traditional pasta “pljukanci” and seasonal truffles in a warm and relaxing environment of our restaurant.

THE HISTORY
After the Napoleon’s wars, when the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy first quietly and then quickly and strongly took over Istria, a smart man called Meneghetti decided to buy many acres of land and start producing food for one simple reason – there were 6 thousand soldiers within 500 m from his estate and he was able to sell them everything that he produced.

He started building houses, barns, planting vineyards and olive groves, raising goats and sheep, and hosting Austro-Hungarian officers during their leisure time. It was already then that Stancija Meneghetti began to have a reputation of one of the most beautiful estates on the Adriatic coast, and a few decades later that reputation grew even more.

Abandoned by all the former armies, owners, and accidental passers-by, overgrown in Mediterranean underbrush and weeds, it was re-discovered in the early 2000s by Miroslav Plišo and his wife, Romana Kajfež, who were in search of a perfect estate for their enjoyment. There was only one condition – the place had to be located in Istria.

THE MENEGHETTI WINES
‘The Red Land’ (terra rossa) around the Meneghetti Wine Hotel is a hard and poor soil, richer in stone than soil, intense, mineral, and rich in iron, favorable for the cultivating red wine grapes.

It is protected by a small hill from the south that prevents excessive humidity, and it gives the vine a long and healthy lifespan with strong aromas. “The Red Land” of the Meneghetti vineyards is cultivated in an ecologically sustainable manner with deep respect towards nature.

The vine is pruned by hand according to the Simonit & Sirch method which is soft with the purpose of nurturing the plant in order to achieve older age. Along with the autochthonous sorts, we are cultivating international varieties that get special characteristics, affected by the local terroir, the unique soil, and the environment full of Mediterranean vegetation.

WINE ROADS
It seems that grape wine was brought to Istria as early as in ancient times by the Phoenicians and the Greeks. The native settlers, Histri, successfully mastered the skills of growing this noble plant, as well as producing wine.

In support of this there is s legend according to which the Argonauts, famous Greek seafarers, while searching for the Golden Fleece exclaimed kalavojna, which loosely translated means good wine in Greek. Where exactly did this happen? Along the eastern coast of Istria, in a place near Raša Bay, which bears this name even today.

To what does Istria owe its becoming synonymous with good wine? Human effort, of course, but above all the natural features that guarantee high quality grapes. These are the location, soil, climate and terrain, each contributing to the charms of good wine in their own right.

There are two dominant types of soil suitable for growing vines on the Istrian peninsula: red soil (terra rossa) and marl or flysch, known as white soil. Experts say that red soil is ideal for growing high-quality red grape varieties (which give stronger structured, serious wines), while flysch soils are suitable for white varieties, where wines retain their freshness along with fine fragrances, aromas and softness.

The hilly terrain with gentle slopes, abundant in Istria, are very favourable for growing grapes, especially the areas with more sun. In addition, high oscillations in day and night temperature further accentuate the scent of the wine.

Among the polychromous wine varieties found in this area, the most important one is white Istrian Malvasia. It is grown all over Istria and is an integral part of the region’s identity. The wine has a straw yellow colour, pleasant aroma of a locust flower, it’s harmonious, moderately fresh and has sufficient structure.

Another wine typical of Istria is Teran. Its colour is purple to ruby-red, with lively fruit aromas, it is very fresh and fragile and less structured. These two varieties are followed by Borgonja Crna (red burgundy), Hrvatica Crna and several less known varieties.

A number of world famous high quality varieties are grown here, such as Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Merlot, Refosco and Cabernet Sauvignon. Two varieties of a peculiar aroma attract the attention of wine lovers: Momjan Muscat and Muscat Rose of Poreč.

OLIVE OIL ROADS
Since ancient times Istria has always been defined by olives. The first written accounts related to our peninsula have to do precisely with olives, i.e. olive oil, and date back to ancient Greeks and Romans. Nothing can match its fluidity, it is an absolutely unparalleled symbol of the Mediterranean, health, gastronomic delight and peaceful old age.

Its flavour is unusually bitter, its aroma is exceptional and it blends excellently with the best of dishes. It is also the most valuable fat in human diet, a body care product, a cure for various ailments. On top of all, it is regarded by many as the elixir of life, a divine fruit, liquid gold.

TRUFFLES
An unseemly tuber of an unattractive form and an intense aroma – the truffle! This rare and expensive fungus that grows in the fertile Istrian soil is a real culinary treat.
