WINTER IN ZURICH
During the winter months from the terrace at ALEX we’re looking at the snow capped mountains. Just 45 minutes away the slopes bekon and promise a fun-packed day. Downhill or Cross Country, snowboarding or snow shoe walking, hiking or sledding.

A day on the snow and apre-ski by the lake, the ALEX Guest Services team will make the best recommendations and help organise everything before you arrive. The winter season runs from November until March, sometimes stretching until the end of April. Contact us in advance for the latest forecast.

Downhill Skiing
The skiing areas Hoch-Ybrig (50km slopes) and Flumserberg (65 km slopes) are only a 45 minutes’ drive away and we know where to park. You can even ask ALEX to prepare a lunch-box for you.

Cross Country Skiing
We have the local knowledge on some fantastic trails nearby (30-60 min drive), for example Zugerberg (18km trails), Einsiedeln (25km trails), Rothenturm (20km trails) or Flumserberg (18km trails).

Tobbogan
For toboggan fun, try out the local Uetliberg (3.1 km run). In case there is no snow, ALEX will check the weather forecast for you and help you choose the place with the best snow conditions, for example Hoch-Ybrig (2.5 km run), Zugerberg (2.5 km run) or Flumserberg (3km run). ALEX can give you directions and find out where to rent your sleigh.

YOU ARE NOT A SKIER AT ALL?
ALEX knows the best winter hiking routes and can organise a moonlight snowshoe hike for you if you like. There are plenty of other winter activities around Zurich also. The last time Lake Zurich froze over and someone skated on it was in 1963.

For guaranteed skating try the ice-rink in Thalwil, just a few minutes from ALEX. Its the perfect place to practice your Axel and Toeloop. Otherwise, our boat can take you across the lake to the Christmas Market and the Bellevue Square Ice-rink.

If it’s spectator winter sports that you prefer, its the perfect time to catch an ice hockey match at the local arena, home of the ZSC Lions. We can assist with advance tickets.

Zurich is the city of water, that`s why swimming is a must. Summer and “Badi” what the citizens call their public area with lake access just belong together. All our rooms have oak parquet or hard floors and no carpeting. Due to the history of the 15th Century building, one of the first inns in Zurich, some floors are slightly slanted and the ceilings in three rooms on the 4th floor are somewhat lower.

Being a building under protection, the supervisory of monuments and arts wouldn’t allow for the floors to be leveled out. The premium Schramm mattresses ensure a restful night’s sleep. Many of our bathrooms are equipped with a rain shower or bathtub.

9 HOUSES – 1 HOTEL – 700 YEARS OF HISTORY
Just imagine who might have lived in your room hundreds of years ago… Over the years, these nine medieval townhouses have been home to gentry, merchants, artisans and heads of the local guilds, all of whom left their mark by building, living in, decorating and modifying their residences.

But to preserve these nine disparate historic houses while transforming them into a luxury modern hotel was a challenge – to which the well-known Swiss architect Tilla Theus had the answer.

She has threaded the houses through with interconnecting passageways, creating gradual transitions where one house merges into the next. Chrome, steel and glass have been introduced to complement the old stone walls and wooden beams.

Theus also selected a particular type of wood and a specific kind of stone for use in each house. This ambitious conversion took a decade and was completed in 1995. More than 1,000 conservation builders and designers were involved in helping to fuse these nine entities into a single hotel.

Restoration in order to preserve; innovation where construction required. This proved the only way to maintain the physical substance and core layout of the buildings, and so to conserve their 700 year-old spirit.

And what does the name ‘Widder’, or ‘ram’, have to do with all this? Quite simply, the name of the hotel refers to the ‘Zum Widder’ guild of butchers, based in nearby Widdergasse since 1401. Stay unique.

In LA it’s known as canyoning, here in Zurich we call it “Üetli-Hike”. ZOO ZÜRICH
Animal lovers take note: the Zurich Zoo is both a fun park and an institution. Tourists love it, locals love it and you can’t visit it often enough. Polar bears, penguins, giraffes and much more converge here with the Masoala Hall, where giant butterflies can be discovered among tropical plants.

LINDT
The museum of the Lindt chocolate factory, which opened in 2020, is idyllically located in Rüschlikon on the lake.

JOGGING OR WALKING

A classic in Zurich: the boat trip on the lake. The departure point is always on Bürkliplatz, the city’s lake shore. The tours are variable in their duration – from 90 minutes to 4 hours, everything is possible.

You can choose where to get off the boat: if you particularly like a certain place, you can leave the ship at any time and set off on an expedition.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS

HIKING
In LA it’s known as canyoning, here in Zurich we call it “Üetli-Hike”. At the summit itself, the Uto Kulm is there for your refreshment and offers Swiss specialities for your rumbling belly.

ZOO ZÜRICH
Animal lovers take note: the Zurich Zoo is both a fun park and an institution. Tourists love it, locals love it and you can’t visit it often enough. Polar bears, penguins, giraffes and much more converge here with the Masoala Hall, where giant butterflies can be discovered among tropical plants.

LINDT
The museum of the Lindt chocolate factory, which opened in 2020, is idyllically located in Rüschlikon on the lake.

As soon as you arrive, you can smell the chocolate from the street and that promises only good things: the centre of the museum is probably the highest and largest chocolate fountain in the world…a feast for the eyes of young and old. Our concierge will be happy to organise tickets and transfers.

JOGGING OR WALKING

SLEDGING
While the Üetliberg is there for wonderful hikes in spring, summer and autumn, it offers a somewhat different adventure in winter: sledding. Take the train up to the summit and then whizz down the slope on your sledge. The “après-ski” drink is then served in your hotel.

ICE SKATING
Hockey fans and figure skaters wanted! A workout that promises mulled wine and conviviality in equal measure. There are various ice rinks in Zurich where you can let off steam. Suitable for newlyweds, families or fun among friends. The ice rinks are a happening in the city every year.

BOAT TRIP ON THE LAKE
A classic in Zurich: the boat trip on the lake. The departure point is always on Bürkliplatz, the city’s lake shore. The tours are variable in their duration – from 90 minutes to 4 hours, everything is possible.

You can choose where to get off the boat: if you particularly like a certain place, you can leave the ship at any time and set off on an expedition.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS

The hotel offers 40 rooms and suites in eight categories, ranging from 27 sqm to 79 sqm. Located on the upper floors and overlooking the lake, the rooms were designed by Philippe Starck like onshore sailors’ cabins.

Dream of the lake and regattas, adventures, light breezes and soft light from the terraces or private balconies. Various poetic surprises are sprinkled around, designed to pique guests’ curiosity and imagination as they continue their voyage and delicious daydreaming.

These include nautical charts of the lake for experienced sailors and postcards of yachts for pleasure boaters on vacations. Like the hotel, its rooms and suites reflect a quest for a structurally elegant and modern bare minimum.

Natural, soft, clear colors for simplicity and comfort, solid brick and delicate rattan walls for warmth and privacy. Interior doors in the corridors enable a wing of the hotel to be completely privatized and thus to combine various suites and rooms of different categories.

The sports studio, reserved for the hotel’s residents, is a precious, intimate, yet sophisticated setting, featuring red wood, mirrors and blown glass. State-of-the-art facilities await sporty guests looking to enjoy a moment of relaxation and well-being.

On the third floor, the two Eden Suites occupy the south-east and south-west wings. With five openings to the outside, including four charming ironwork balconies, they are bathed in light at all hours of the day.

Eden Kitchen & Bar
A menu inspired by culinary traditions from all over the world
On the ground floor, with its large bay windows opening onto the outside, Eden Kitchen & Bar promises to be an essential meeting point in Zurich. Light plays on the natural leather sofas and tables, gently tinted by the multicolored stained-glass window created by the artist Ara Starck.

Light-colored floors, red wood and boat oars and hulls are just some of the design cues that create a warm and relaxed atmosphere and serve as reminders of the hotel’s attachment to the lake.

The large open kitchen stages a non-stop show, in which everyone can admire the expert touch and creativity of the teams headed by Italian chef Marco Ortolani, veteran of prestigious restaurants in Italy and London, not to mention experience gained in Argentina and Hong Kong.

This wealth of cosmopolitan influences is apparent in the menu, with dishes inspired by culinary traditions from all over the world: Burrata, forgotten vegetables, basil; quinoa, pomegranate, avocado, chimichurri; macaroni, truffle, ham, Gruyère cheese; salmon with a yuzu teriyaki marinade; and exceptional grilled Swiss meat.

Nor are the establishment’s local roots forgotten, Zurich-style sauté veal and potato rösti is a tribute to the city. Elegant and varied, the wine list reflects vineyards from all over the world, including great appellations from Switzerland and France, with a special place for the Michel Reybier estates.

La Muña
A chill-out atmosphere prevails beneath the huge parasols
Perched on the sixth floor and accessible directly via the glass elevator in the lobby, La Muña overlooks the city from its tree-lined roof terrace.

La Réserve Eden au Lac Zurich’s second restaurant is a treasure chest, mingling imaginary memories of moments spent on the lake with extraordinary objects found in the city and around the world. La Muña offers a unique 360° view of the historic center, with the lake and the Alps in the distance.

The restaurant is organized into two areas. Inside, it has taken over the former attic beneath the hotel’s spectacular dome. Continuing the spirit of a minimalist and respectful renovation, Philippe Starck has sought to enhance the existing structural elements.

The monumental framework is magnificently highlighted, with the original brick walls and wooden floors once again on show.

The furniture also looks as if it has always been here, in this imaginary “harbor-master’s office”: with comfortable light-colored leather or slightly old-fashioned floral fabric upholstery, and rugs picked up during trips to Persia and Asia.

Wherever the eye may roam, fertile surprises and mysteries intrigue and extend a permanent invitation to travel. In the dovecote, stained-glass windows created by Ara Starck accompany and guide the light through the dome.

Like a multifaceted tale, these stained-glass windows tell a different story throughout the day, for a magical and always unique experience. Two outdoor terraces are accessible, one of which can be entirely privatized.

Whether on a sofa or at a table, under the huge parasols, guests can enjoy a relaxed and festive atmosphere while sharing the Japanese Peruvian specialties of chef Domenico Zizzi, whose inventive and delicate cuisine has already delighted connoisseurs worldwide.

Ultra-fresh and bursting with flavor, La Muña’s cuisine combines different textures, raw and marinated elements, acidity and sweetness – based on carefully sourced ingredients, including some rarely found in Europe – expressed through sophisticated, freshly prepared delicacies designed for sharing in a convivial atmosphere.

Each table can select Crudo or Caliente dishes, in which ceviches flavored with spices and fresh herbs rub shoulders with beef steak teriyaki with truffle sauce, or sashimi served alongside wakame seriole with ponzu sauce for an amazing delicious gourmet journey.

A magical Peruvian plant, muña has always been used to relieve altitude-related ailments. The name of the restaurant is a tribute to the chef’s culinary inspirations as well as a nod to the unique view from the terraces, across the open kitchen in the foreground, the lake and the city of Zurich in the background.

Zurich is Switzerland’s largest city and it looks back on more than 2000 years of history. Correspondingly, the historical sights in Zurich are spread throughout Zurich in a varied and abundant way.

We would like to present the most important attractions and sightseeing location – squares, monuments, examples of architecture, museums and cultural meeting points in the city on the River Limmat to you:

The Schipfe in the Old Town
The “Schipfe” is one of the city’s oldest quarters and one of the most well-known sights in Zurich. The name “Schipfe” comes from the ships and means: “Shunting” the boats onto the shore and back into the water.

The Schipfe was the reloading site for important goods in the Middle Ages, from the 16th Century onwards for the silk industry, the bathhouses and shipbuilding. The Schipfe has remained a craftsmen’s alley to this day.

The Schipfe in Zurich’s old town is an ideal location to wander around, go shopping and eat. It can be reached in less than 10 minutes by foot from the hotel entrance.

Fraumünster – one of Zurich’s landmarks
The Fraumünster is a church with a convent and was donated in 853 by King Ludwig “the German” and occupied by women from Europe’s upper nobility.

The convent enjoyed the favours of kings and the abbess held the right to issue and mint coins in Zurich until the 13th Century. After the Reformation, the church and convent were owned by the town. Prominent parts of this important Zurich sight are the Roman choir and the high-domed transept.

The nave was last renovated in 1911, after the North Tower was raised and the South Tower was removed in the 18th Century. Aside from the largest organ in the Zurich Canton, which has 5793 pipes, the most prominent embellishments are its stained glass windows: the northern windows in the transept (1945) were completed by Augusto Giacometti, Alberto Giacometti’s uncle.

The five-part window cycle in the choir (1970) and the rosette in the southern transept (1978) are works by Marc Chagall. There is a fresco cycle by Paul Bodmer in the cloister depicting the founding of the convent.

Grossmünster with its famous double towers
According to the legend, Charlemagne discovered the graves of the city’s patron saints, Felix and Regula, and had an initial church erected as an Augustinian monastery in Zurich’s old town. The current building was started in 1100.

In the first half of the 16th Century, Grossmünster became the starting point for the Swiss German-speaking reformation under Huldrych Zwingli and Heinrich Bullinger.

The theological school, which was then attached to the monastery, became the nucleus of Zurich University. Do not pass on climbing Grossmünster’s Karlsturm, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view. A Zurich sight which you can’t miss.

Niederdorf – shopping and night-life in Zurich
During the day, the pedestrian zone and numerous shops hidden in small alleyways invite you to go shopping. In the evenings, Niederdorf changes into an amusement quarter for a diverse crowd with its bars, gastro-pubs and street artists. Opera House – a musical sight in Zurich
The Zurich Opera House opened its doors in 1834, then under the name “Action-Theater”, with the premiere of Mozart’s Zauberflöte. The theatre, which holds around 1,100 spectators, was completely renovated from 1982-1984 and received an Uto-Quai extension.

In 1985, the opera orchestra separated from the Tonhalle-Orchestra and, therefore, brought the Zurich Opera Orchestra to life. In 2012, at the start of Andreas Homoki’s directorship and the new general musical director, Fabio Luisi, taking office, the Zurich Opera Orchestra became the Zurich Philharmonic.

The orchestra can be heard in around 250 opera and ballet performances per season at the Zurich Opera House. Additional philharmonic concerts are put on as a podium for the concert repertoire. Soirées and chamber music matinees complete the orchestra’s artistic spectrum.

Zurich Tonhalle – pure musical enjoyment
In terms of acoustics, Zurich Tonhalle is one of the best concert halls in the world. The famous Tonhalle hall was built in 1895 and inaugurated in the presence of Johannes Brahms. It offers space for 1455 concert-goers.

The Zurich Tonhalle-Orchestra has become not only possibly the best in Switzerland, but one of the leading musical bodies in Europe in the past few years.

A good hundred highly motivated musicians as well as one enthusiastic famous conductor (Lionel Bringuier) present the public with around one hundred concerts per season with around fifty different programmes.

National Museum Zurich – just behind the train station
The National Museum Zurich is the most-visited historic museum in Switzerland, and it also carries the largest art and historical collection in the country. Changing exhibitions make a visit to the museum particularly delightful and the central location just behind the main train station is a big plus.

Zoo Zurich & Masoala Rainforest
Elephants, rhinoceroses, penguins and 20 different types of monkey are just some of the animals which can carry you off into an exotic world with all of your senses at Zurich Zoo.

You can also enjoy looking at the snow leopards in their rocky Himalayan landscape, watch the spectacled bears climbing and searching for food in their cloud forest installation and admire the swimming giant tortoises in the Masoala Rainforest.

It is warm and humid all year round there, a tropical-smelling, green oasis, a live piece of Madagascar over 11,000m². Explore the rainforest on a winding path and get an insight into the typical, palm tree interspersed forest where lemurs and tortoises live. Events can be hosted in the attached restaurant with its garden atmosphere and impressive view into the rainforest.

Lake Zurich – dream excursions outside the city
It is not only worth exploring the sights in Zurich itself on outings, outside the town walls there is a particularly beautiful destination for dream excursions. Lake Zurich invites a range of exciting activities. Water sports, boat rides, enjoyment with a view and much more – discover Zurich from its natural side.

Uetliberg – Zurich from above
Above the rooftops of Zurich towers the Uetliberg (871m above see level). From its summit you have a splendid panoramic view of the city and the lake, right up to the Alps. This destination is particularly popular in November as the Uetliberg’s summit is often above the covering of high fog above Zurich.

In winter the pathways to the summit are turned into sledging routes. In summer, Uetliberg is the departure point for signposted hikes, a mountain bike route and for the “Planet Path”. This 1.5-2 hour walk leads to the Felsenegg cable car in Adliswil and provides a fascinating insight into the solar system.

The Panorama Trail: From Üetliberg to Felsenegg
Comfortably, and running according to a scheduled timetable, the Üetlibergbahn railway takes summiteers to Zurich’s 871 metre high local mountain.

The alpine hike that follows is equally suited for families. And on Felsenegg the gondola lift waits to take you down to Adliswil, where the S-Bahn runs back to Zurich. But, hold on: Don’t miss the home-made apple strudel at restaurant Felsenegg!

A boat trip on Lake Zurich
With a shoreline of 87.6 km a boat trip across Lake Zurich is a wonderful alternative to the classic way of sightseeing. You will receive a thorough impression of Zurich’s cityscape and catch a glimpse of the stately homes situated right on the lakeside.

There are many ways to navigate across the lake: The city of Zurich offers short and long boat trips and also themed trips with culinary offerings.

If you prefer it a little more intimate, you may also rent your own boat. Nothing is more romantic than floating on Lake Zurich at sunset with your beloved ones while enjoying a glass of sparkling wine.

Lucerne
Lucerne offers a diverse range of attractions for everyone: an Old Town with historical houses decorated with frescoes, the Chapel Bridge with its Water Tower, the Lion Monument & Glacier Garden, a lakefront promenade on Lake Lucerne, Europe’s largest transportation museum, an IMAX film theater, the Culture and Convention Center Lucerne (KKL) and numerous museums.

Pilatus: Lucerne’s very own mountain, Pilatus, is one of the most legendary places in Central Switzerland – and one of the most beautiful. On a clear day, the mountain offers a panoramic view of 73 Alpine peaks.

The mountain can be reached from Lucerne by gondola lift and aerial cable car and from Alpnachstad with the world’s steepest rack railway.

Thus a special roundtrip tour is possible, involving journeys by paddle steamer, rack railway, aerial cable car and bus. The trip can be combined with various types of sports, hiking tours, or a visit to the summer toboggan run.

Rhine Falls
At 500 feet wide and 75 feet high, with an average of 21,000 cubic feet of water per second, the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen are Europe’s biggest. We recommend a boat tour in the falls basin over to Center Rock and further downriver.

Rapperswil
In addition to being a car-free medieval town, Rapperswil, the city of roses, has a great deal to offer – namely, a lovely bathing resort, a castle with a Polish museum, Knies children’s zoo, a wooden bridge to Hurden and much more. A visit to this picturesque town is definitely worth your while.

St. Gallen
St. Gallen, the local capital of northeastern Switzerland, is the heart of the region, providing every opportunity for cultural pursuits and leisurely shopping expeditions.

The historic abbot’s territory with the magnificent baroque cathedral and the rococo library are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Buildings by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava lend the historic townscape a highly modern look.

The narrow, winding streets of the old part of town, adorned with bay windows, are ideal for leisurely shopping and eating out in comfort.

Wood-panelled, old St. Gallen ‘Erststockbeizen’ (cosy restaurants on the first floor of houses in the old town), provide a diverse range of culinary delicacies, from haute cuisine to hearty regional specialties.

Rigi
Visit Mt. Rigi, one of Switzerland’s most popular excursion destinations. The different transportation methods you will use make this excursion a true adventure.

You will travel over the Albis Pass to Weggis, and then take a cable car to Rigi Kaltbad and reach Rigi-Kulm (5,900ft a.s.l.) with Europe’s first cogwheel train. Enjoy a lovely view of the Swiss Midlands and a stunning Alpine panorama.

Bahnhofstrasse
The world-famous shopping precinct was created following the construction of Zurich Main Station on the very site where 150 years ago the city’s fortified moat was located. 1.4 kilometers in length, it connects Zurich Main Station to Lake Zurich.

Department stores, boutiques and jewellery shops are strung together like pearls on a chain. The further along Bahnhofstrasse you go in the direction of Lake Zurich, the more exclusive the shops become.

Here, people even stroll on Sundays when the shops are closed, to indulge in some window shopping. Bahnhofstrasse, Rennweg and Augustinergasse lead to the picturesque old town.

Old town
In Zurich’s old town you will find tradesmen, antique dealers, bookshops and florists alongside trendy shops, jewellery shops, Zurich labels and hairdressers.

This combination of many different specialist shops, which can only be found here, makes the old town a unique shopping district. Traditions are maintained to this day in many of the businesses.

In sharp contrast are the numerous trendy shops contributing to the diversity and unique character of the shopping precinct in Zurich’s old town.

The Time-Tunnel is a good example of this: here the fashion-conscious can find second-hand designer objects, or have their hair cut at the hairdressers. Situated on the opposite bank of the River Limmat is one of the city’s oldest districts.

The Schipfe is still dominated by tradesmen today, and you can often obtain expert advice from the specialist or artist in person, whether a goldsmith or expert wood carver. And along Strehlgasse and Storchengasse, in Gassen and Wühre, you will find boutiques with exclusive fashions.

Zürich West
Zurich labels are often to be found where you would least expect them. In Zurich, creative ideas are routinely put into practice and welcomed with open arms.

The creative sector in Zurich is booming. This is particularly evident in the trendy districts of Zurich-West and Aussersihl, where creative people have taken up residence – among other places, in former factories.

New galleries, restaurants, bars and clubs are opening all the time. Textile and furniture designers, jewellery makers and fashion designers, architects and graphic designers all have their studios or shops here.

The closer you get to Langstrasse, the more colourful it becomes: the multicultural street is home to people from more than 110 different countries.

Viadukt Arches
Life has returned to the arches of the viaduct built in 1894 in Zurich West. A 550-yard urban meeting place invites you to stroll, shop, eat and drink.

A shopping paradise has been created under the 36 arches. The colourful mix of delicatessens, studio galleries, sport and fashion boutiques is open to everyone. At the heart of it all is the Market Hall where 20 farmers and food vendors from the area offer their wares.
