SAINT-TROPEZ

Near our hotel, discover Saint-Tropez’s Vieux Port (old port) where all the fancy yachts are docked, the small beaches of La Bouillabaisse, La Ponche and La Fontanette, the colourful streets and the numerous monuments and museums in town. Also take some time to discover the numerous art galleries, wander the shopping streets lined with luxury boutiques and young designers’ studios.
The history of Saint Tropez goes back to Antiquity, the legend being that it got its name from the Roman officer Torpes, serving in the court of Nero. Torpes, who had converted to Christianity, was assassinated by order of Nero. After his corpse had been dumped in a row-boat, it is said that he floated to the shoreline where the town now stands.
Discovered by painters and writers at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th, the town owed its initial fame due to the likes of painters Signac and Matisse and writers like Maupassant and Colette.
Yet it was in the 1950s when the resort really hit the world stage thanks to being the location of the film “And God Created Woman” starring who would go on to become the most famous ambassador for Saint Tropez – Brigitte Bardot.
An internationally renowned holiday spot for the Jet Set, Saint-Tropez is also famed for its numerous tourist sites. Less than 10 minutes on foot from the hotel, the famous Vieux Port (old port) is a reminder of the town’s origins as a harbour whose sailors sailed the seven seas.
Today, with its pleasure port, you’ll encounter luxury yachts each more beautiful than the other. After walking along the quayside where you’ll find the fish market, the statue of 18th century admiral Pierre André de Suffren and the Annonciade museum, wander along the smaller streets that lead off from the Vieux Port and discover this seaside town’s other gems.
Take the small roads such as Rue du Cepoun Sanmartin and Rue de la Miséricorde and Rue des Remparts, wander through the squares such as the Place aux Herbes, Place de l’Ormeau and the Place de la Mairie, home to the Mairie (town hall) that houses the former hydrography school, and be enchanted by the pretty houses with colourful façades.
Marvel at the age-old fortifications, the oldest of which date back to the start of the 16th century, including the Tour Vieille, the Porte du Revelen, the Tour Jarlier and the citadel.
Then visit the numerous museums of Saint-Tropez, including the Annonciade, the Maritime History Museum, the Police Museum and the Cinema Museum, plus the Maison des Papillons (Butterfly House), which houses a collection of more than 35,000 specimens.
WATER ACTIVITIES
With beaches, enchanting creaks and long stretches of white sand at the heart of nature, you’ll be spoilt for choice in finding your little patch of heaven. Right by our hotel located by the sea, discover the beach of La Bouillabaisse, stretching from Saint-Tropez to Gassin.
For a wilder and more intimate setting, head to the Granier creaks or La Moutte beach, and fall in love with the serene setting. There are many other great beaches though. Try Les Canoubiers beach, sheltered by its vast bay, the Salins, bordered by shady pine trees, and of course, Pampelonne beach in Ramatuelle, undoubtedly the most famous on the Saint-Tropez peninsula.
After some time relaxing on the beach, try out some of the aquatic activities on offer in the area. Get ready for an adrenaline rush with parasailing, kitesurfing and flyboarding, or for a more relaxing ride along the coast, try paddleboarding or kayaking.
You can also try jet-skiing around the beautiful Saint-Tropez gulf. If you’d rather go further out to sea, you can rent a boat, take sailing lessons, head for a day of big-game fishing or take a boat ride towards the other coastal towns of the Côte d’Azur.
WATER SPORTS
Our hotel with its sea views is your ticket to heading out onto the open sea to discover all the beauty of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Many companies offer boat rental with or without skipper.
For some more serenity, head aboard a cruise boat to appreciate the charm of the town and peninsula of Saint-Tropez or the Baie des Canoubiers, or to get to Sainte-Maxime, Port-Grimaud, Issambres, Cannes or Nice. If you enjoy big-game fishing, you’ll be able to treat yourself to a day out on the blue sea to catch tuna, swordfish and mahi-mahi.
On the different beaches across Saint-Tropez, you can enjoy numerous other activities. If you’re passionate about surfing or wind-surfing, you’ll love the surfing conditions, but you can also try new experiences such as parasailing, water skiing, flyboarding, wakeboarding, kitesurfing, or even towed tubing or riding on a flyfish.
Saint-Tropez is equally a top place for jet-skiing. You’ll find numerous rental agencies who provide different models for a great experience with family or friends. You can even participate in excursions at sea that will lead you towards Cavalaire, the Cap Nègre or Fréjus. For a calmer experience, you can explore the sea aboard a paddleboard or kayak.
BEACHES OF SAINT TROPEZ
In the heart of the Côte d’Azur at the entrance of a gulf, Saint-Tropez is the perfect place to enjoy the warm waters of the Mediterranean. Its many beaches are ideal for swimming or long moments of relaxation on the warm sand. Two minutes from the hotel, just beyond the Pointe de la Pinède, you’ll find La Bouillabaisse beach, stretching out over 500 m.
Privately owned in parts, this beach has an accessible area offering wonderful views over the port of Saint-Tropez and Sainte-Maxime at the other side of the gulf. In the centre, you’ll also find several smaller beaches. La Ponche is the smallest of these at just over 50 m in length. A little bit longer, the neighbouring La Fontanette sits at the feet of the citadel.
You can also discover the wild environment of Granier beach and its abutting smaller creaks, or Les Canoubiers with its wonderful shady pine trees that act like natural parasols. Beyond the Pointe de la Rabiou in the eastern part of Saint-Tropez, other heavenly places await you.
La Moutte beach is renowned for being the resort’s wildest beach, but it can be hard to access. A bit further south, Les Salins beach is the longest in the town centre but also one of the loveliest with its large stretch of over 500 m of white sand.
Meanwhile, Pampelonne, perhaps the most famous of Saint-Tropez’s beaches, is actually in Ramatuelle (10 minutes by car from the hotel). Along its five kilometres, you can enjoy its different atmospheres with the Nikki Beach, Tahiti, Club 55, Bagatelle, etc.
GASTRONOMY
During your stay at our charming hotel, don’t miss one of the events most loved by Saint-Tropez’s residents – the Marché des Lices. At this market held on Tuesdays and Saturday mornings, traders set up their stalls under the shady plane trees.
Amid the wondrous colour, discover the wondrous local produce of Provence, including fruit, vegetables, fish, sea food, olive, goat’s cheese, honey and wine, as well as flowers, artisan products, Provençal fabric and the odd antique and bric-a-brac.
The happiness doesn’t stop at the market. Take a seat at the terrace of one of the cafés or near the fountain, or visit the fish market, open every day, where you can buy such delicacies as sea bream, mullet, octopus or spider crab.
To discover all the flavour of Mediterranean cuisine, you should also visit one of the many restaurants in town. Whether at the Vieux Port or along the small streets, on the terrace or in the plush dining room, at top-rated restaurants or small bistros, you’re sure to find the right place for you.
Try some of the local delicacies for main course, including tapenade, aïoli, pistou soup, bouillabaisse, mussels à la provençale, ratatouille, pissaladière and Provençal stew.
Then, for dessert, don’t hesitate to order the famous “tarte tropézienne”, Saint-Tropez’s famous pudding mixing decadent brioche, smooth cream and crunchy sugar crystals. Invented in the 1950s, this famous tart shot to fame thanks to another star of Saint-Tropez star, Brigitte Bardot, who adored this sweet treat.
SHOPPING IN SAINT TROPEZ
In this radiant town with sea views, you’ll be under the spell of Saint-Tropez’s shop windows. As you wander its many streets, you’ll be able to discover the new collections from some of the world’s top labels (such as Dior, Vuitton and Longchamp), but also lines by local designers who helped to create the Saint-Tropez style.
Discover, for example, the famous label Vachon at their new shop behind the Place des Lices, then head to the Rondini studio, where for more than 90 years, the famous Saint-Tropez sandals have been made by hand. ART & CULTURE IN SAINT TROPEZ
Located close to the centre of Saint-Tropez, you can reach the unmissable sites of the town by foot from our hotel. Way up top, discover the beautiful 17th century citadel. With a fortified enclosure, a system of moats and a counterscarp, these ramparts offer an exceptional view over the Bay of Saint-Tropez.
Its dungeon, a listed historic monument, houses the superb Maritime History Museum with a wonderful collection of objects related to fishing, naval construction and hydrography, and which traces the lives of three famous 18th and 19th century maritime figures from the town – Pierre-André de Suffren, Hippolyte Bouchard and General Jean-François Allard.
Afterwards, head back down towards the centre to admire the Tour Jarlier, a tower which makes up part of the town’s fortifications. Continuing your visit, you’ll find the town’s church whose ochre and sienna clock tower stands as one of the most famous icons of Saint-Tropez. Its astonishing façade features a statue of Saint Torpes as a Roman centurion.
Nearby, the Château Suffren, also called the Tour Guillaume, is the oldest building in town, built from 980 onwards. Then discover the Annonciade, former chapel of the White Penitent order, which today houses a museum devoted to post-Impressionist painting, the Maison des Papillons (butterfly sanctuary) and the Chapelle Sainte-Anne, constructed in the 17th century after the city was spared from a nearby plague.
Finally, head to the Place des Lices, the other heart of the city after the Vieux Port. Shaded by beautiful plane trees, you’ll find a market held on Tuesdays and Saturday mornings, yet it is always lively throughout the week thanks to the games of petanque bowls that take place here.
