VILLA SAN MICHELE
Villa San Michele was born from the dream of a Swedish doctor and writer, searching for his corner in the world. A place where his home “was opened to the sun, the wind and the voices of the sea – like a Greek temple – and light, light, light everywhere!”.

He was looking for a place with an identity, that would cure his soul, because “soul needs more space than the body“. We will discover together the history of this fantastic place, of this wonderful work and the uniqueness of its architecture.

He was only 19 years old when Alex Munthe, Swedish doctor and writer, arrived for the first time in Capri. A journey that would completely change, transform and improve his life.

In the best seller “The Story of San Michele”, he tells how, climbing the 777 steps of the Scala Fenice, arriving in Capodimonte, he immediately made his decision: to build his own house there. He found the light he desired, the space for his soul, the place for his identity.

At the time, the land was owned by the well-known carpenter Maestro Vincenzo, who used the place as a home for his humble workshop, surrounded by spaces for vines and fruit trees. Last but not least, the historic medieval chapel, now in ruins.

Axel Munthe lived on Capri for more than 56 years: from the day he visited it for the first time, he was never able to leave the island: that’s how deep the bond between him and the island was.

Munthe was not an architect but, nevertheless, he gave life to one of the most famous villas in Europe: let’s discover its architecture together.

As we have already mentioned, Munth was not an architect by profession but, at the same time, he managed to create one of the most famous tourist attractions on the international scene. It was 1985 when he bought the land to build his dream house.

Many supported him with his designs, among them: the well-known painter Aristide Sartorio and many local manufacturers and builders.

How not to notice the typical features of Capri architecture that blend with the perfection of the domus of the Roman era: a combination of art, history and culture for a unique architecture!

“Inside the house reigns the contrast between black and white. In the loggia, the colors of the garden take over, along with the changing shades of the blue Mediterranean.”

It’s defined as the genesis of a masterpiece: from the original chapel in ruins (dedicated to St. Michael, hence the name of the villa), to a building hanging between the sea and the sky. The element that dominates the scene? The colonnade, with the sphinx looking towards the endless sea.

Purity, nature and elegance: three characteristics that make the garden of Villa San Michele the most beautiful in Italy. A path, a journey, an experience that begins with the wisteria of the pergola and continues towards the boulevard of cypresses. Each season has its own perfumes, its colors and its essences.

The garden was born as a space open to the wind, the light and the sea. Nature lovers will find in the garden of Villa San Michele many types of trees and plants: to discover them all, an updated and detailed list is available on the official website of the structure.

When you visit the garden you’ll feel in a heavenly universe, hung between the sea and the earth, between the sky and the infinite, between essence and nature, in its purest form.

But who takes care of such a wonder? Who dedicates body and soul to this magical place? Raffaele Scarpato, the gardener of Villa San Michele. Since 1988 Raffaele dedicates his art, his passion and his competence to the most famous garden in Italy.

And it’s thanks to his contribution, and that of his assistants, that Villa San Michele obtained, in 2014, the prestigious “Most Beautiful Private Park in Italy” award.

Axel Munthe shared his passion, his love, his interest for music, for nature and for animals with Queen Victoria of Sweden, who spent long periods in Capri.

In order to protect Capri’s migratory birds, which risked being exterminated by wild hunting, the well-known Swedish doctor and writer decided to buy the land formed by the Monte Barbarossa (Mount Barbarossa) in order to offer, donate and reserve a protected area for them.

Besides this area, Axel Munthe also decided to buy the mountain which shadows Villa San Michele. On top of the mountain, there is the much loved and millenary Castello Barbarossa (Barbarossa Castle), used during spring as an ornithological station, managed by the Ornithological Center of Bologna.

Art is dominant inside this precious villa: from Roman to Etruscan works, arriving to Egyptian ones, Villa San Michele has been hosting an important art collection for years!

Munthe chose these forms of art for their beauty, symbolic meaning and uniqueness: how not to mention the fabulous sphinx over 3200 years old. What can we find in this collection? Sculptures, bas-relief engravings, sarcophagi, architectural fragments and inscriptions, most from Rome and Naples.

What catches the eye, strikes the soul and conquers the mind is the perfect harmony that each work of art establishes with the architecture of the villa and the precious garden.

If you are a lover of art, nature and architecture, you absolutely must visit Villa San Michele. Here is all the main information about opening hours, tickets and details to contact the Villa.

THE PATH OF PIZZOLUNGO
During the walks to discover the most beautiful corners of the island of Capri, we have to stop our attention on Pizzolungo: a path a few kilometers long, from which you can admire the beauty, the wonders, the uniqueness of the island, in the name of the history and the tradition of Capri.

The first place to visit is the Arco Naturale, a wonder that dates back to the Paleolithic age. Continuing towards the stairs we will arrive at the second wonder: the cave of Matermania. A nymphaeum from the Roman era, whose origins have intrigued many historical scholars.

The third place of this wonderful journey is Villa Lysis, home of Count Fersen. Going down towards the sea, a breathtaking view from which it’s possible to admire the beauty of the three Faraglioni (stacks).

To get to the Pizzolungo Path, starting from the Piazzetta, you have to go on via Le Botteghe, via Croce and Matermania, arriving at the Arco Naturale. Three reasons why you should walk through the path of Pizzolungo

If you want to live an experience in the name of nature and the beauty it offers to us, if you want to immerse yourself in the rich and spectacular flora of the Mediterranean, if you want to enjoy the silence of an eternal and magical place, you must make this journey: arm yourself with comfortable shoes, water bottles and immerse yourself in this natural wonder.

BELVEDERE DI TRAGARA
For all the romantic souls out there, for all the people who love to be moved in front of the beauty of nature, for all those who are looking for a magical and timeless place, here is the Belvedere di Tragara. A breathtaking view, which captures the eye and conquers every sense of your body. The best time to visit it? On full moon nights or at sunset, to admire the beauty of Marina Piccola and the Faraglioni of Capri.

How do you get to the Belvedere di Tragara? You can go there by walking along Via Pizzolungo until you reach the wonderful panorama: during your walk you can also admire the beauty of many historic villas and appreciate the uniqueness of their architecture!

PUNTA CARENA LIGHTHOUSE
Punta Carena is the border between the sea and the sky, between the infinity and nature, between infinity and earth. In ancient times it was called Punta di Limmo, from the Latin word “limen”, which means border.

To build the wall behind the lighthouse were the British at the beginning of the 19th century, to protect, defend and shelter the island from possible attacks.

The lantern of the lighthouse, instead, was built in 1866, and is among the most beautiful and important of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Enough to say that it’s the second largest lighthouse in Italy, after the one in Genoa, for power and illumination.

To highlight and understand its uniqueness, it’s essential to retrace the history of its construction, which began in 1862. It was the period of the Bourbon kingdom of the two Sicilie when it was built and switched on for the first time 14 years later, precisely in 1876.

At the foot of the lighthouse, we find the beachfront. If we ask the inhabitants, lovers and visitors of Capri which is the most beautiful beach of the island, they answer “Faro di Punta Carena” (Punta Carena lighthouse).

Actually, this is not a real beach but a rocky bay, with crystal clear water, ideal for those who want to get away from the crowds that invade Marina Grande and enjoy moments of pure relaxation.

The best time to visit it? The sunset, when the sun’s rays reflect on the water of the sea creating a nuance of shades that hypnotize the eyes and involve every sense of the body.

If you want to have a romantic moment, if you want to enjoy moments of tranquility, if you want to be moved by a unique view, you must absolutely visit the lighthouse of Punta Carena.

THE BLUE GROTTO
One of the most beautiful wonders offered by nature, one of the most exciting and engaging passages, one of the most popular destinations for all tourists: the Grotta Azzurra captures both your eyes and your mind, while winning your soul over.

How can you not be enchanted by the rays of the sun that enlighten, guide and lead you through an extreme sensory experience, a journey to discover one of the most extraordinary beauties.

Grotta Azzurra has something magical, unique and highly engaging about it. Only those who have visited it at least once in their lives know what we are talking about. An experience that involves every sense of your body, that captures every part of you, transporting you into a completely natural universe.

To your eyes, heart and soul will arrive the purity of its blue color, enlightened by the rays of the sun that get through thanks to the underwater window in the entrance, shining on the crystal clear water.

Also, some small, nice and interesting silver-colored reflections, linked to the little air bubbles created on the external surface, embellish the scene, making it unique. The particular coloration is the result of an important phenomenon of light refraction, which elevates it to a natural wonder.

The cave has a width of 25 meters and a length of 60mt, with an entrance that’s less than a meter high: yes, that’s right, to enter you have to lie on the bottom of a very small boat, which slides inside the cave thanks to its small opening.

Once inside, you float immersed in a pleasant contrast between darkness and the light of the sun’s rays, between dark tones and reflections that make this water unique, so crystal clear to seem transparent.

Only a few attentive people manage to notice the elevated cavity which can be accessed through a small landing point, covered and protected by a Roman cement work. Many theories have been created about this cavity and we will examine them in depth in the next part, related to the history of the Grotta Azzurra.

A rocky cavity, at the bottom of a crystalline sea, pierced by the rays of the sun: how can we remain indifferent in front of that? It was 1826 when the writer Augusto Kopisch and the painter Ernesto Fries, during a vacation in Capri, revealed to the whole world the natural beauty of this place.

They then decided to call it the Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto, just for the characteristic coloring): since then, this wonder has never left them. It became the protagonist of their works, their drawings and their thoughts!

This place was known, loved and appreciated at the time of the Romans, who left, on its inside, a cement platform used as an internal landing, as well as archaeological remains of remarkable importance.

A statue of Poseidon and one portraying a triton, currently kept at the Museum of the Certosa di San Giacomo. Grotta Azzurra became the personal marine nymphaeum of the Emperor Tiberius.

MARINA PICCOLA
One of Capri’s most beautiful bays: Marina Piccola. Crystal clear sea, clean water and breathtaking views: what more could you ask for? Marina Piccola is in the southern part of the island, defended and protected by a steep rock wall.

For this reason, the water is always warm and the area is not very windy, the ideal environment for many visitors who, even in winter and autumn, lie down in search of sunlight and a quick dip to regenerate.

Marina Piccola was born as a small village of fishermen who spent most of their time there. A place reserved for a few up to 1880, when it was discovered by the famous German painter August Weber.

August’s story is very particular: for years he lived inside a cave because he didn’t have the economic possibility to buy a real house. He was a guest of Ciro Spadaro, whose son, Francesco, appears in many of his paintings, as he represented the archetype of the fisherman of Capri.

He married a local woman, began to work as a translator and created his own house in front of the beach of Marina Piccola, which became for him a great, enormous, fantastic source of inspiration.

Marina Piccola is located south of the island. To get there, follow these directions: from the Piazzetta, take the bus that leaves at the terminal, or walk down Via Roma, to the place called Due Golfi, and take the steps of Via Mulo. You’ll be there in a quarter of an hour!

If you plan to visit it, we suggest you to arrive in the morning, because the sun leaves very early (around 5 pm).

MARINA GRANDE
One of the most beautiful wonders that nature offers us, a unique and highly engaging landscape, a place suspended between sea and sky, with the frame of Capri.

Marina Grande is one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, the first contact that everyone, arriving on the island, has of Capri. In fact we find, right here, the only port of the island, where hydrofoils and ferries land.

Despite its proximity to the port, the water is pure, crystal clear and extremely clean: characterized by a long line of pebbles, it’s the perfect place for those of you who want to enjoy moments of pure fun. How can you not love the clear sand, the magnificent coastline and the high promontories with green woods?

THE FARAGLIONI OF CAPRI
When we pronounce, hear, listen to the word Capri, we cannot but associate it with the magnificent image of the stacks (Faraglioni), the symbol of the whole island. Three rocky peaks that have characterized the history of Capri.

Let’s take a look at legend that has terrific ancient origins, finding its origin in the Odyssey written by Omero. The Greek poet identifies the stacks as the rocks thrown by Polyphemus against Ulysses.

Virgil, on the other hand, gives them a different identity: the stacks are the abode, the habitat, the home of mermaids: angelic with a diabolical soul. Through their song, they circled the sailors and then killed them.

Another legend, instead, consider the stacks as lighthouses of the island, real guardians who protected it from external attacks. The name Faraglioni derives, in fact, from the Greek word “pharos”, that indicates the lighthouse.

On their peak were turned on huge fires, especially during the night, in order to indicate the correct route to the helmsmen and to evidence eventual obstacles/dangers. At last, the Faraglioni are seen a symbol of fertility for all women: they illuminate their path and facilitate the fertile period.

Analyzing, instead, this natural wonder from a geological point of view, the stacks are “born” because of the karstic waters, which have formed these atypical rocks. Therefore, their shape is linked on both marine abrasion and atmospheric agents.

Do you know the names of the three stacks of Capri? Let’s discover them together: The one connected to the land is called Saetta. Pieces of an ancient Roman villa have been found on it. It’s the highest stacks of them all, with a height of 109 meters.

Stella is the most loved one by visitors, thanks to its natural gallery of 60 meters. Tourists usually stop in front of it to take selfies and immortalize unique moments of a spectacular journey.

Stella is the perfect setting for magical wedding proposals. Why Stella? In honor of the Madonna della Libera, known as Stella del Mare (Star of the Sea), for which the chapel on Mount Castiglione was built in 300.

The third stack is Scopolo, the outermost one, with a height of 104 meters. This stack is well known because it’s the ideal habitat of a rare specimen of lizard, the Podarcis sicula coerulea, characterized by a spectacular blue.

The color derives from the fact that this lizard is camouflaged with the sky and the sea, becoming of the same color. How was it discovered? Thanks to the intervention of some historical sailors, the only ones who were able to climb the stacks with their bare hands.

We also have a fourth stack, the “Monacone”. It takes its name from the monk seal, present in the waters of Capri until the early twentieth century. Due to its small size, it’s defined as a rock but it’s right to point out that it is a real stack.

Several historical studies identify the stack as the rest of the tomb of Masgaba: for those who do not know this, it’s the emperor Augustus’ architect.

You can visit the Faraglioni thanks to the many tours that are organized by tour companies. Going through the natural gallery of Stella, admiring the beauty of Saetta, discovering the details of Scopolo: a unique experience we suggest you do at least once in your life.
