There is a place at the southernmost tip of Europe – dreamlike, magical and secret – cradled by idyllic vineyards, olive and fruit orchards and only a few minutes from the bright blue Aegean Sea.

The Kinsterna, an impressive mansion and sprawling estate dating to the Byzantine, Ottoman and Venetian eras, has been meticulously restored and returned to its former glory with an air of discreet luxury.

With a view of the medieval fortress town of Monemvasia, which is listed among the ten most popular monuments in Greece, the Byzantine-era Kinsterna mansion has been restored with the utmost respect for its long history and now is an entire settlement unto itself, with a central manor house, adjacent out-buildings and nearby dwellings.

At the same time, the owners have also set out to restore the estate’s rich natural environment, emphasizing various traditional agricultural activities such as: harvesting grapes, producing olive oil, distilling tsipouro and making soap –with the aim of making the estate as autonomous and self-sustaining as possible.

Today, the Kinsterna produces its own wine, extra-virgin olive oil and table olives, tsipouro (traditional Greek spirits), bread, marmalade and other fruit preserves, soap and much more.

The fruit-bearing trees and fertile vegetable gardens, the beds of aromatic herbs and flowers and the springs with their fresh, flowing waters all contribute to this ethos and model of sustainability. In addition to its exciting history as a centuries-old fortified manor, today the Kinsterna is a year-round pole of attraction as a comprehensive vacation experience.

Explore the mansion; stroll the pathways among the gardens, and enjoy the vivid colors and fragrant smells of the decorative and aromatic plants, herbs and flowers (over 250 kinds); taste the fruit and other products from our vegetable gardens and orchards; visit our wine cellar; relax in the spa with locally inspired treatments, and try local specialties of Greek cuisine in a unique natural setting. A visit to Kinsterna will undoubtedly remain etched in your memory for years to come. And you will certainly return.

THE HISTORY
The region’s history dates back hundreds of years, if not thousands. At a distance of 10.6 kilometres north of Monemvasia, on the hill named “Kastraki” (“Little Castle”), there was an important Mycenean centre.

In the 6th Century B.C., Dorian Argives built the city of Epidaurus Limira on this hill, which developed into an important administrative and residential centre in classical times. Above the estate, on the hill “Kastraki”, one can see remains of a Hellenistic fortress (250 B.C.), which served as the fortified border outpost of Epidaurus Limira.

In the Limnes area (about 1 km from the estate) you can see in the courtyard of the Church of Agia Thekla various architectural elements that may have come from the ancient sanctuary of Artemis Limnatis, which was described by Pausanias (170 A.D.) in his travels.

In classical times, tufa limestone quarries used to operate in the areas of Nomia and Agios Fokas (relevant studies in the estate library). The great earthquakes of 365 and 375 A.D. destroyed and submerged the coastal settlements of the region.

In 583 A.D., after the local Laconians laid the foundations for the fortress to protect themselves from raids by both Slavs and Saracens, the security of the outlying villages in the region became irrevocably tied to the fate of the castle-fortress.

After the fall of Byzantium, Monemvasia came under Venetian rule (1461-1540), then passed to Ottoman control (1540-1690) before reverting once again to the Venetians, who landed in the “Ambelakia” (“little vines”) region (1689), where Kinsterna’s vineyards are located today. After a year, they succeeded in taking the fortress, which they held until 1715, when the Ottoman’s recaptured and held it until 1821.

The early history of the mansion is lost in the mists of time, and, unfortunately, no records have been found regarding the original structure and the time of its construction. The age of the lintels in the Reception area and in Room 37, according to a study carried out by Democritus Institute, places their likely dates of construction at 1667-1783 and 1720-1784 respectively.

The manor house is situated in an ideal position for monitoring the area and forms a classic “Π” shape common to medieval defensive structures. The interior courtyard is dominated by a great cistern encircled by 20 imbedded columns.

The mansion actually owes its name to this unique and imposing cistern, since the word “kinsterna” traces a circuitous route from the ancient Greek “kisti”, which then joined with the Latin “sterna” to become “cisterna” and then reentered Byzantine Greek as “kinsterna”.

In 1670, the Ottoman traveler Evliya Ҫelebi noted that there were many public wells and cisterns in Monemvasia and that these comprised important monuments of the region’s cultural heritage.

Ottoman characteristics of the building, such as its embrasures and gun holes and the large fireplaces and chimneys are still evident today, combined with Byzantine and Venetian elements most clearly visible in the exterior faces of the walls and the ceramic designs and brickwork.

The rich and complex past of this fortress-manor can also be traced in the base of a defensive cannon, in the estate’s olive-press, in a detention cell that today comprises the mansion’s most unique and sought-after suite (Byzantine Suite 25) or in hidden storage rooms (Kinsterna Suite 39).

After the Revolution of 1821, the manor and its estate, whose previously recorded owner was Ibrahim Bey, passed to the ownership of the new Greek State. In 1870, the estate was purchased by the Kapitsini family.

A portion of the manor complex was inhabited until the 1970s by Lina Kapitsini, the last “Lady” of Monemvasia. After 1980, the property was gradually abandoned to the elements.

By 2002 when it was purchased by its current owners, nature had once again taken over and was slowly destroying the manor house and outlying buildings.

THE REBIRTH OF A JEWEL
In 2006, a talented and experienced team of architects, engineers and designers began to restore the mansion, in close cooperation with the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. Throughout this painstaking process, traditional methods and materials (both old and newly crafted from local sources) were employed.

During the restoration process, a great deal of original and local materials were used: cypress wood, reeds from nearby wetlands, slate slabs for paving and roofs, handmade ceramic elements from Geraki, old Pendelic marble, hand-made forged iron doors and various antique items such as lanterns, chandeliers, chairs, etc.

Many craftsmen from the surrounding region, whose skills have been handed down from generation to generation, contributed their passion and know-how to this masterpiece as well. The Kinsterna was reborn as a boutique hotel in 2010, despite the enormous size and complexity of the project and its many challenges.

During your tour, you will discover many elements and characteristics from the original construction and design of the mansion. From the Byzantine domes and internal water pipes and conduits to the handmade embroideries and original fireplaces in the rooms, every part of this splendid building has its own unique story to tell.

THE PHILOSOPHY
For many centuries, this property, which later witnessed the revival of Kinsterna manor, was a model of autonomy and sustainability, functioning harmoniously within a rich and lively natural environment.

Fed by abundant flowing water from natural springs, the estate nourished the people living on it and undoubtedly contributed to the local economy, as shown by historical archives from the Byzantine and Ottoman years.

These traditional practices and occupations – from a time when communities were economically independent – lie at the heart of Kinsterna’s model of sustainability and of its owners’ philosophy and vision.

With special emphasis on reviving and strengthening these ancient practices (harvesting grapes and making wine and tsipouro, gathering olives and producing olive oil, baking bread, making soap, weaving fabric on the traditional loom, etc.), the owners have consciously made great efforts to ensure that the local community and wider region will benefit from this impressive model of sustainability.

Another important pillar of Kinsterna’s philosophy is based on a cultivation and celebration of the human element in warm, sincere and welcoming hospitality – a well-known point of pride throughout Greece.

Visitors to Kinsterna may be surprised by the friendly (and at the same time consummately professional) attitude and performance of the entire staff, who are genuinely eager to welcome visitors to this little corner of paradise in the southern Peloponnese. This is their home, and it gives them both pride and pleasure to share it with our guests.

ROOMS – SUITES – RESIDENCES
Get ready to discover a genuine experience of hospitality at Kinsterna manor, combining antique charm with the comforts of modernity. The mansion’s rooms and suites are captivating in their history and magnificence, while the individual dwellings and two fabulous villas offer privacy and a modern design that perfectly complement the style and atmosphere of the historic manor. Each and every room is different and unique, with individualized layout, design, styling and decoration.

All the rooms and suites, however, share certain common characteristics, such as: traditional hand-made embroideries on the walls, custom headboards and lamps, impressive wooden ceilings covered with herringbone-patterned reeds, luxurious marble baths, traditional wooden doors and shutters, new and antique design objects, top-quality linens and personal-care bath products.

At the same time, all rooms come equipped with such modern comforts as: flat-screen TV, wireless internet service, king or queen-size beds and a choice of top-of-the-line pillows from Coco-mat. While preserving the original structure of the building, architects and designers made every effort to assure that most of the rooms enjoyed a view of the sea.

For strictly structural and architectural reasons, there are a few cases where sea-views were not possible, mostly when a room’s original window openings were narrow gun-slots or embrasures – designed for the manor’s defense – and were thus preserved and retained.

KINSTERNA SUITE
You are sure to appreciate your stay in the Kinsterna Suites, which offer an amazing view of the Aegean Sea and the estate’s private vineyards, while most of the suites have balconies.

One of these suites is particularly interesting, thanks to its finely carved old fireplace and a balcony built above the old wine press, where the grapes were most likely trodden for wine, and the must was gathered for other uses.

The mansion’s defensive cannon was also positioned here (Kinsterna Suite 39). You will also be surprised to learn that the sitting room of one of these suites was once used as a kitchen by the manor’s owners.

This image is reinforced by the restored fireplace and the trap-door which is today located in the suite’s sitting room and which was probably used to facilitate the storage or transfer of food from the old cellar and the olive press (Deluxe Suite 37).

These suites are also impressive on other levels, with their king-size beds and fireplaces, while most of them feature separate sitting rooms or combination living-and-dining areas.

BYZANTINE SUITE
Byzantium would have been proud to lend its name to these impressive suites, whose Byzantine domes and stone arches have inspired many of the manor’s guests with wonder and envy.

All of these suites offer exterior verandas with lush greenery, where you can relax with a book from the manor’s library or enjoy a cup of hot coffee in the morning, surrounded by flowers, trees and birdsong.

These suites were created in the older sections of the manor, with ornate Byzantine screens (templa) comprising their most distinctive decorative feature. These templa act as functional dividers separating the bath and changing area from the main room.

The old mirrors, comfortable armchairs, warm lighting and small alcoves in the walls all create an atmosphere that is sure to take you back in time. Whatever suite you choose, it will certainly leave a vivid impression, not only for its comforts but also for its Byzantine décor and details.

In olden times when the manor also served a defensive purpose, one of these suites was a jail cell, now transformed into such luxurious quarters that staying longer is the dream and escape a fate to be avoided or postponed. (Byzantine Suite 25).

JUNIOR SUITE
These suites will surprise you with their beauty and will lead you into a world of timeless architectural splendor. Several Junior Suites are located on the ground floor with lushly planted private verandas where you can enjoy a sumptuous breakfast with your tea or coffee.

And in one of these suites the cistern’s drain opening has been preserved, complete with stalactites. It was at this point (Junior Suite 14) where the outflow of water for the estate’s irrigation was controlled.

The remaining Junior Suites, located on the mansion’s upper floor, promise a restful stay among warm earth tones, which provide an interesting contrast with the vivid colours and aromas of the gardens outside.

A special feature of one of these suites (Junior Suite 32) is the impressive Ottoman fireplace, perhaps the oldest in the building, which creates a warm and romantic atmosphere during the chilly nights of winter.

DOUBLE ROOM
Ideal for a romantic escape, these adorable guest rooms are elegant and welcoming, including a desk and lounge chair. All display special features or characteristics, such as the preserved portion of an ancient wall in Room 22, an old fireplace which has been restored and now is the dominant decorative feature of Room 38 – or the traditional wooden dome in Room 24. Sleeps two, in one double bed or two twin beds. En-suite bathroom with walk-in shower. Size ranges from 17 to 30 m2 (182 – 323 ft2).

DELUXE RESIDENCE
Every Deluxe Residence is spacious enough to accommodate your family or even a group of friends and so completely equipped and comfortably furnished that you are guaranteed a unique experience of true hospitality.

All of our Deluxe Residences feature an extremely comfortable bedroom with kind-size bed and marble bathrooms with rare hand-made tiles, while most of them offer a fireplace, coffee/tea station at the atmospheric sitting room with dining table and separate W.C.

Deluxe Residences at the ground floor offer a private veranda situated among Kinsterna’s lovely flower and vegetable gardens. It’s an incomparable experience having your own garden with a glimpse of the sea – with fresh greens, vegetables and herbs at your disposal for making a tossed salad or some specialty of Mediterranean cuisine.

Two of them are really impressive as can be offered – upon request – with an additional double room (inter-connection rooms) for further flexibility and comfort. The more spacious Deluxe Residence features an outdoor Jacuzzi, while these on the first floor feature a spacious balcony with stunning view of the Aegean Sea.

DINING
At our renowned restaurant “sterna” traditional Greek recipes combine perfectly with the latest culinary craft and techniques – giving you an opportunity to taste for yourself the high level of the estate’s creative Greek – Mediterranean cuisine.

All the local fruits, herbs and vegetables which flourish in our gardens or nearby fields (from wild asparagus and cherry tomatoes to pomegranates and quince) are combined in ingenious ways to enrich the restaurant’s many dishes and desserts. The restaurant “sterna”, located in the heart of the historic building, next to the Byzantine cistern, is open for dinner until 4th September.

THE RESTAURANT
The all-day restaurant “mouries” (“Mulberries”) features authentic creations and home-cooked treats. The Kinsterna estate’s fertile soil and abundant fresh water provide our kitchen with fresh organic seasonal produce, such as vegetables, fruit and aromatic herbs.

Additionally, the estate’s olive groves produce extra-virgin olive oil and table olives of the highest quality, while local cheese and fresh, free-range meat come straight from the village. When you add to this bounty aromatic herbs which grow just a few steps from the kitchen, such as peppermint, sage, rosemary and thyme, you have the makings of a real feast any time of the day.

Our close cooperation with select local farmers and fishermen guarantees the quality and freshness of our basic ingredients and allows us to highlight the culinary tastes and traditions of Laconia.

LINOS TAVERNA
The taverna “linos” is located outdoors next to the old stone olive press, the place where grapes were trod to make wine and the old wood-fired oven – making it the most atmospheric and authentic place for a genuine local meal.

The tavern is usually open two days a week during the summer months and is justifiably proud of its wood-fired oven and fresh-baked bread as well as the various dishes which slowly simmer over a period of hours. Here you can enjoy some of our acclaimed dishes featuring fish and vegetables, fresh garden salads and tender oven-roasted meats.

BELVEDERE
One of the favourite pastimes of Kinsterna guests is to relax in the Belvedere with a cup of tea or glass of our own estate wine – gazing at the mountain or sparkling sea.

It’s an exceptional spot, ideal for taking your morning or afternoon coffee, sampling a tasty dessert or nibbling something with a cocktail. The Belvedere often hosts private dinners and cocktail parties and is also the perfect place to welcome guests at a wedding reception.

BAR & POOL BAR
The pool bar is located next to the adults-only pool and features cocktails inspired by products grown right here on the estate. Don’t be surprised to find fresh fruit from our gardens and orchards in your cocktail, such as a melon mojito or a daiquiri from some citrus fruit.

Many home-made fruit syrups add an exceptionally refreshing note to a cocktail, as with our own distilled spirits (tsipouro) made in limited quantities from the mass left over from pressing the grapes for wine.

To truly enter into the Mediterranean spirit, ask the barman to concoct one of these delicious fruit-based cocktails, and then relax and enjoy it in one of the private areas around the pool. At the same time, you can enjoy a light meal or snack.

And if you are staying at the mansion during one of the colder months of the year, you can enjoy these fabulous cocktails in the winter bar in front of the fireplace. This is a warm and cozy area inspired by the process of distillation.

The old still, with its sealed cauldron (alembic) and copper pipes, is the main decorative feature of the area, while antique furniture and modern objects harmoniously combine to create a cozy and welcoming mood.

The impressive outdoor terrace with its unique view of the Aegean Sea offers great privacy and makes a perfect place for small social gatherings and private functions.

THE SPA
A Mediterranean adventure would not be complete without a spa experience, especially since Kinsterna’s Spa treatments use pure natural local ingredients, such as olive oil, honey and grape extracts.

Fresh aromatic plants and herbs from our gardens, such as rosemary, peppermint, lemongrass and chamomile, play a major role in a series of specially formulated treatments and are also the basic ingredients in the production of our own hand-made soap.

“Grape Expectations”, one of our most popular exfoliating treatments, uses essential oils and seeds from our vineyards’ grapes, while our Honey Detox Massage provides all the therapeutic benefits of pure mountain honey from nearby Mount Parnonas.

The holistic face and body signature treatment “The Secret of Olive Oil Essences” with olive oil and other fresh ingredients, is also an experience you would not want to miss. The real secret of Kinsterna Spa’s magic and mystique lies in the wonderful water which flows throughout the Spa and gives life to the mansion and its estate as well.

The indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis, the Rhassoul and Water-Paradise cabins as well as the traditional Ottoman Hamam all promise moments of deep relaxation and well-being, while a massage of your choice in the Spa’s private outdoor booth or specially designed double cabin provides a true taste of paradise for couples.

CORPORATE MEETINGS & RETREATS
The business world has evolved and has understood the importance of genuine human interaction and experiences – as well as the need for balance and contact with nature. The Kinsterna acts as a kind of “reset button” for business groups hoping to incorporate this kind of beautiful, natural experience in their personal and professional lives.

The manor and its estate have become a well-kept secret in the world of businesses, Greek and foreign, with a select group of enterprises having adopted it as a part of their regular non-business activities.

The Kinsterna, only 7 kms. from the majestic medieval fortress town of Monemvasia, offers 2 areas which are ideal for corporate retreats, conferences, seminars, new-product launches and board meetings.

The manor’s atmospheric library comfortably hosts up to 50 persons, while the conference hall can accommodate up to 200. Both rooms feature all the necessary technical equipment and can be converted into board-room, classroom or seminar-room, while all areas of the manor offer free wi-fi internet access.

During their stay at Kinsterna, company employees, associates and management have the opportunity to build more healthy relationships during relaxed visits to the enchanting castle-town of Monemvasia and other nearby attractions or hiking in the wooded hills around the estate.

Group activities such as harvesting grapes or gathering olives also help strengthen a sense of camaraderie, facilitate the creation of new bonds and satisfy a basic human need for balance and contact with nature.

BOUTIQUE – WEAVING ROOM & ANTIQUE SHOP
In the heart of Monemvasia, just before you cross the little causeway to the majestic castle-fortress, you will find a small stone boutique housing Kinsterna’s old looms and remarkable woven fabrics and embroidery.

It also offers the estate’s own exclusive wines, extra-virgin olive oil, tsipouro, soap and marmalades. Here you also have the opportunity to learn about the ancient craft of weaving and watch our own local weaver demonstrate how this fabric is made using a traditional loom and age-old techniques and know-how.

In the antique shop located within the manor itself you can find a variety of old items, each one with a small story to tell. Discover these intriguing items, and bring home a unique souvenir!

FOR THE CHILDREN
For the most part, children these days have limited contact with nature. At Kinsterna, however, things are completely different. The estate’s magical environment awakens our deepest relationship with the earth, captivates the senses and stimulates the imagination. It encourages adolescents and children of all ages to participate in various outdoor activities, such as hiking or biking, and there is even a children’s pool within the estate.

The variety of available activities means that every child finds something interesting to do: making soap, planting trees, harvesting grapes or olives, gathering herbs, riding horses or donkeys, touring the estate in our horse-drawn carriage, or interacting with the sheep and goats which roam freely about the grounds.

And in the manor’s library – a wonderful place to meet people and chat – there are board games and plenty of books. The outdoor playground, which was created on the site of the old “Pasha’s Harem”, gives children the chance to enjoy hours of carefree play, to explore an amazing treehouse and to weave fantastic stories in this magical spot.

During the winter months or rainy weather, there is a covered playground as well, right next to the children’s pool, which is designed to accommodate both small and older children. For couples with very young children and babies, Kinsterna provides babysitting services (by arrangement) so that young parents can enjoy some romantic time alone or visit the area’s many attractions.

VINEYARDS & WINE
Every wine lover or connoisseur appreciates an estate with its own private vineyards. The location of Kinsterna and its vineyards plays a crucial role in the production of exceptional wines: constant sunshine and the gentle Aegean breeze which continually circulates through the vineyards combine with soils rich in clay -resulting in wines with dramatic sensorial qualities.

Proud of its fertile vineyards and their reputation, Kinsterna today produces three exceptional wines from local Greek varietals, primarily Kidonitsa, Agiorgitiko, Assyrtiko and Monemvasia. The estate’s white wine casts a citrusy spell, with notes of bergamot and quince, while the rosé boasts a strong fruity aroma with hints of cherry, strawberry and rose.

You will surely enjoy Kinsterna’s red wine with its aromatic intensity of red fruits and plum, hints of sweet spices, pepper, cinnamon and even a smokey note, thanks to its careful ageing in oak barrels for over 5 years.

The estate also has another wine-surprise: In 2010, the sweet “Malvasia” wine produced from the sun-dried grapes from our vineyards’ varietals (Monemvasia, Assyrtiko, Kidonitsa, Asproudes) was awarded PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) status for the Monemvasia region.

This was achieved despite the attempts by wine producers in France, Spain, Italy and even Crete to claim exclusive patrimony of this wine. Finally, after monumental efforts by Greek oenologists and historians, they were able to prove that this wine actually originated in Monemvasia, as the name “Malvasia” confirms.

The legendary wine “Monemvasia-Malvasia” (Malmsey) has been produced since at least 1340 A.D., when it was used during the coronation of the Patriarch of Kiev, and for 4 centuries it dominated the wine markets in both the East and West.

From the above-mentioned varietals grown in Kinsterna’s vineyards a new, experimental production was attempted. After ageing in oak barrels for 24 months, “Monemvasia-Malvasia” was first bottled in 2013 and is now made available in limited quantities exclusively for visitors and guests. Today’s PDO designation rightfully recognizes the oenological heritage of the region and Kinsterna’s role in preserving and defending it.

ESTATE & GARDENS
If you imagine the Garden of Eden, there would surely be a profusion of fruit trees, aromatic herbs and flowers, whose scents would cast a spell as you wandered the paths among them. Cooling waters would spring from the earth and collect in pools that reflect the bright blue sky or the turquoise waters of the sea beyond.

This is the scene that greets a visitor to Kinsterna’s vast gardens and orchards, with centuries-old olive trees, fragrant orange groves and colorful beds of herbs and vegetables, which provide the fresh and flavorful ingredients for our restaurants’ delicious dishes.

Most of the estate’s trees have been here since the early 19th Century (according to old records) and are still carefully tended, while any trees that die are replaced by local species. There is also a remarkable variety of flowers.

Many times, only minutes after a fruit is plucked from the tree, it appears in a fruit salad on your plate At other times, it takes weeks, months or even years of patience and careful preparation in order to produce a culinary treasure, as in the ageing of vintage wines after the grapes are harvested or the maturing of extra-virgin olive oil until it is ready to consume.

This is the way of life in an almost self-sufficient rural paradise. This is how the local communities thrived and survived for centuries and how the former lords and masters of Kinsterna managed their land.

The current owners of the estate, who are also from the area, have made every effort to revive and maintain these traditions, with respect for the past and an eye to the future. A simple stroll through the estate and its gardens is enough to understand the beauty of this place – and the care, love and effort behind it.

THE REGION
Monemvasia, known by the Franks as “Malvasia”, is a small, historic town in the southeastern Peloponnese, in the Epidauros Limira region of the prefecture of Laconia. It is better known for the medieval fortress on the “Rock of Monemvasia”, a small island connected to the mainland town by a 400-metre causeway.

The surviving buildings and defensive structures of the fortress include impressive ramparts, gates and numerous small Byzantine churches. Monemvasia’s name comes from two Greek words: “Mone” (“single”, “only”) and “emvasis” (“entrance”), in other words: “a place with only one entrance” – further highlighting its defensive advantages. Because it resembles a smaller version of the Rock of Gibraltar, Monemvasia’s nickname is “Gibraltar of the East”.

In 583 A.D., Laconians built fortifications on the island and moved there to defend against the frequent raids by Slavs and Aravs. Since that time, the fate of the surrounding region of Agios Stefanos has been closely tied to that of the fortress.

The fertile coastal fields and gardens of the region supplied the residents of the fortress with food necessary for their survival. All along the foothills and slopes of Mount Parnonas one can find towers, fortifications and Byzantine churches from the Venetian and Ottoman periods.

In the surrounding region there are many Byzantine churches from the 13th and 14th Century (Teria, Pantanassa). One such church, Panagia (13th – 14th Century) is the best preserved medieval church in the region and is located on the ancestral property of the family of Yiannis Ritsos, one of Greece’s most important 20th-Century poets, and 1.5 km from Kinsterna.

Monemvasia was occupied by the Franks for only a few years (1246-1259). In 1461, the fortress surrendered to the Pope and was then handed over to the Venetians by the last Byzantine lord, Nicholas Palaiologos, in 1540 (1st Venetian occupation).

A long period of Ottoman occupation ensued (1540-1690). In 1689, the Venetians once again occupied the fortress. In 1715, the Turks took over Monemvasia from the Venetians and either murdered or took hostage all the local authorities.

The post-Byzantine history of Monemvasia ends on July 21, 1821 – when, after a long siege, the Turks handed over the keys of the fortress-town to Prince Alexander Katakouzinos.

SIGHTS & SITES
The southern Peloponnese has a cornucopia of amazing sights, majestic natural wonders and picturesque places to visit by car. We suggest the following:

THE MEDIEVAL FORTRESS OF MONEMVASIA
The gorgeous castle town of Monemvasia is an authentic treasure of enormous historical, architectural, cultural and geographical importance. Today, its historic churches, castle walls, low arches, vaulted passageways and its winding cobbled streets and alleys all speak of its medieval past.

This Byzantine fortress, coveted down through the ages by all the powers around the Mediterranean: Venetians, Franks, Arabs, Saracens and Turks, stands imperiously at the entrance to one of the most enchanting corners of the Peloponnese.

The medieval fortress town is only a ten-minute drive from the estate, and while there you can visit the Upper Town at the top of the plateau with its 13th Century Byzantine church of St. Sophia. You can also enjoy a special excursion with the Kinsterna boat and view the medieval fortress as pirates did centuries ago – from the sea.

THE CAVE OF KASTANIA
While staying at the Kinsterna, a truly magical experience involves visiting the 1,500-square-metre Jurassic-era Cave of Kastania, only the second of its kind in Europe and by all accounts, one of the most colourful and impressive caves anywhere – with fantastical stalagmites, stalactites and crystal formations. Getting there by car takes about 1 ½ hours, while you can also visit the cave with the estate’s boat.

THE ANCIENT SUBMERGED CITY OF PAVLOPETRI
If your imagination is fired by mythical civilizations and long-lost cities beneath the sea, there is such a wonder to be found within a 45 minutes drive of the Kinsterna.
