Villa Condulmer Mogliano

Villa Condulmer, located in the Treviso countryside adjacent to Venice, is a Venetian Villa whose exact origin date remains uncertain. According to Mazzotti it was built on the seventeenth-Century; according to Venturini first works started in 1743 on commission of the Venetian patrician Alvise Condulmer.

Authoritative sources assert that the Villa was built on the ruins of an ancient monastery, attributed to the sixteenth Century, and whose vestiges refer to the barchessa orthogonal to the main house.

Over the centuries the villa underwent several changes of ownership, all linked to the absence of descendants of the dynasty that owned it. Indeed, from the Condulmer, the Villa passed to the noble Grassi family, later to Count Giovan Battista Tornielli, and then to the Bonaventura family, who still owns it together with the Monti family.

The building, which has been protected by the Fine Arts since 1930, is now the site of a hotel. It was the Monti family who, in 1959, transformed the old residence into a hotel, giving it to Alfredo Beltrame, owner of the El Toulà restaurant chain all over the world.

ARCHITECTURE & PARK
According to the dictates of the eighteenth-Century, which see the most magnificent examples of villa, it is the main representative space to be privileged, with the stately building preceded by the garden in axial configuration.

The main entrance, located on the eastern side at the end of an avenue, is characterized by a wrought iron gate with exposed brick pillars and rusticated finishes, all decorated with statues.

Following the entrance avenue, the two monumental cedars, of the Atlas on the left and of Lebanon on the right, stand majestically. The two ancient plants adorn the entrance to the stately building, which faces its main front to the south.

The ground floor is slightly raised, with the four steps leading to the entrance, beyond which the visitor is greeted by the large passing hall, the fulcrum of the building. The flooring is on the Venetian terrazzo; walls and ceiling are adorned with fine stuccos; the two ancient and rare handmade Murano glass chandeliers are symmetrical and precious.

Also in the hall (the ancient living room), you can admire 4 frescoes in bucolic theme, made around the half of the 19th. Century by the painter Eugenio Moretti Larese.

In particular, the second on the right, portrays the then owner of the Villa, Count Giovan Battista Tornielli, together with his friend Giuseppe Verdi. The composer at the invitation of the count, stayed in the Villa from March 1853, to relax after the much criticized first play of “La Traviata”.

In the central part of the hall a large arched door is flanked by a window on each side. Going up the symmetrical stairs, you get to the main floor, also characterized by a large hall with Venetian terrazzo floor, an imposing majestic eighteenth-Century Murano glass chandelier in the middle of a fine noble coat of arms, a protruding terrace, and a remarkable verticality.

The pride of the Villa is the large eighteenth-century park designed by the architect Sebatoni, where it is easy to relax in quiet walks. Numerous are the imposing and rare trees, listed as monumental and secular.

Of remarkable interest is the small pavilion overlooking the lake, the statues, the ruins, the numerous flowers and the typical essences of the ancient parks; finally the large and beautiful swimming pool in the middle of the green. Adjacent to the park of the villa, an eighteenth-century chapel, currently deconsecrated.

SUITE GIUSEPPE VERDI
Our first suite is obviously dedicated to Giuseppe Verdi, the composer of Nabucco, Rigoletto, Traviata, Aida, Otello, Joan of Arc, Macbeth and much more. The composer was deeply connected to the Villa and to the Count Tornielli.

Giuseppe Verdi’s stay at Villa Condulmer was due to a failure. On March 6, 1853, the premiere of one of his most famous operas was staged at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice: La Traviata. But it was heavily hounded by the audience in the hall, resulting in great disappointment of its author.

At that time, the president of the theater was Count Giovanni Battista Tornielli, who inherited Villa Condulmer and the estate of Zerman from the last descendant of the Grassi family. A great lover of music and linked to Verdi by a sincere friendship, the count invited the composer to stay with him in the Villa, far from the usual environments.

Right on the piano of Villa Condulmer, still present in the Villa, La Traviata was revised and rewritten by its author to finally become the famous timeless success that we know today.

Memory of the stay of Giuseppe Verdi in Villa, in addition to the aforementioned piano, is the beautiful fresco commissioned by Count Tornielli to the painter Eugenio Moretti Larese, depicting the same count while conducting a cart pulled by an oxen and on which sits Verdi in the act of playing a lute, in the middle of a merry brigade.

Of the same author are the other three beautiful frescoes that stand in the entrance hall of the Villa.

Rumors mention that the very night Verdi arrived near the Villa, where he would find refuge and tranquility after the failure of his premiere, he was victim of an accident: the carriage on which he traveled ended off the road, and horses and passengers ruined in the lateral moat.

Giuseppe Verdi (1813 – 1901) was an Italian composer universally recognized among the greatest of all times, author of melodramas that are part of the repertoire of theaters all over the world. He dominated the lyric scene after the great protagonists of the early nineteenth Century.

SUITE MARGHERITA CONDULMER
Daughter of the Venetian patrician Tomaso Condulmer, Margherita Condulmer married in 1772 to N.H. Venetian Giovanni Grassi. The latter was given the home and the agricultural properties of the family. The Villa, according to the canons of the time, was above all a summer residence; during the rest of the year the family resided in Venice.

Belonging to the Grassi family and completed in 1772, the same year of the wedding of Giovanni and Margherita, is the great Palazzo Grassi in Venice. This notable work of the architect Giorgio Massari, located in San Marco and overlooking the Grand Canal, is today home to exhibitions of considerable interest.

SUITE POPE EUGENIO IV
The most illustrious ancestor of Alvise Condulmer, the Venetian patrician who commissioned the construction of the Villa, is certainly Gabriele Condulmer, better known as Pope Eugene IV. He was born in Venice in 1383. He was the 207th Pope of the Catholic Church until his death in 1447.

Pope Eugene IV is remembered for having been driven from Rome by the powerful family of the Colonna who, thanks to the intercession of Pope Martin V, born Ottone Colonna and predecessor of Eugene IV, had furiously stolen large quantities of lands, through the Catholic Church, in favor of various members belonging to his family.

Pope Eugene IV, during his pontificate, had then confiscated these assets. The Colonna family took revenge by removing Eugenio from dominating Rome. The pope saved himself by going into exile in May 1434.

Dressed as a monk and led to a Florentine vessel on the Tiber, he secretly arrived in Florence, where he was rehabilitated with the help of Cosimo De ‘Medici. Only after ten years of exile, who also saw him in Venice and Bologna, Pope Eugene IV regained possession of Rome.

It is described by historians against heresy, against slavery in the Canary Islands, man of great goodness towards the poor. Never guilty of nepotism, he was a lover of art and of study. Our suite No. 5 is dedicated to him.

THE PROSECCO ROUTE
The main route of the Strada del Prosecco wanted to trace, as far as possible, the original route inaugurated in 1966 for its undoubted historical and cultural values, but alongside it with a return route that allows the visitor to return by another way start point.

Our journey begins ideally from the city of Conegliano, which offers the opportunity for a walk through the porticoes of Contrada Grande, to admire the facades of noble palaces, the extraordinary beauty of the frescoes on the facade of the Duomo and in the background the Castle.

It is right at the feet of the latter, at the historic Cerletti Wine Institute, that we take the Wine Route. Before, however, a visit to the nineteenth-century and frescoed Bottega del Vino of the Wine School is recommended, subject to booking.

From here we head towards Collabrigo which offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills, dotted with vineyards and small wooded patches. The eighteenth-century villa Ghin Montalban is also interesting.

Then continue towards Rua di San Pietro di Feletto and its seventeenth-century Camaldolese hermitage (seat of the Town Hall), to get to San Pietro di Feletto where stands the splendid Pieve of the twelfth century. of exquisite and elegant Romanesque lines, absolutely not to be missed.

The next stretch of road unravels up to Refrontolo between a succession of evocative views of the Felettano hills, while a short detour can lead to the enchanting Molinetto della Croda, embedded in the rock.

Once in Solighetto, we discover the eighteenth-century Villa Brandolini, home of the Consorzio Tutela del Vino Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene Docg and a place that hosts various cultural events.

Not far from Soligo is the small church of Santa Maria Nova, dating back to the 14th century, like its frescoes. A short hike leads to the small temple of San Gallo on the homonymous hill where you can enjoy an extraordinary panoramic view of the underlying Piave valley.

After passing Farra di Soligo, you arrive at Col San Martino with its medieval Towers of Credazzo, evidence of the Longobard presence, and the authentic architectural and artistic jewel of the Church of San Vigilio, nestled on the hills and reachable by a few minutes walk.

Sino a Colbertaldo you can enjoy a landscape still largely intact and designed by small hilly cones, poetically defined snails, often punctuated by the ancient ‘Casére’ where the peasants still recover the hay and tools.

Our journey continues towards the North, plunging among endless vineyards to reach what is the cru par excellence of the Docg area of ​​Prosecco Superiore, that is the area of ​​Cartizze from which we obtain the eponymous precious sparkling wine.

From the bottom, heading towards the Follo and then going up towards Santo Stefano, you can admire some of the most beautiful views of the Prosecco Superiore DOCG hills, whose uninterrupted vineyards leave space only on the summits of the hills to the renowned chestnut woods.

After passing Santo Stefano and San Pietro di Barbozza (home of the Confraternity of Valdobbiadene), we finally arrive at Valdobbiadene where our outward journey ends without a glance at the main square surrounded by neoclassical buildings, and not far from the delightful church of San Gregorio del ‘600, used, thanks to its excellent acoustics, for musical and choral events.

From Valdobbiadene we resume our journey, retracing our steps in the direction of Guia; a journey that presents some of the most evocative and impressive lookouts on the hills below and on their uninterrupted vineyards.

We are moving along the S.P. 123 in the direction of Campea immersed in a still well preserved rural landscape. After crossing the Soligo river and passing the SP4, at Pedeguarda you quickly climb towards Farrò in an environment that is often new because the vineyards, often steep and steep – not to be missed in this sense the view of Rolle – open or act as counterbalance to thick woods.

Leaving Arfanta behind, we head towards Tarzo and Corbanese first, and then Cozzuolo, Carpesica, Ogliano along a stretch of road characterized by interesting hydraulic-agrarian works such as the ciglioni, and from profiling on the horizon of the ancient villages and their bell towers .

The journey starts at its conclusion through the center of Conegliano and the arrival at the Istituto Cerletti.

Short crossing towards Chioggia and where we find the shuttle waiting for us for the return.

RIVIERA DEL BRENTA
