Cocooned in ten acres of glorious private grounds, in a quiet corner of Northumberland, Doxford Hall oozes the timeless elegance of the quintessential English mansion house. Our sprawling, 200-year old estate offers the perfect bolthole to reconnect with friends and family, with nature and the great outdoors.

For Northumberland, ‘England’s last great wilderness’, has it all. Experience the majesty of the rugged coastline with its deserted golden beaches, iconic clifftop castles and precious native wildlife.

Walk the miles of heritage trails, relax under star-studded skies and take time to ‘just be’.  And when it’s time to swap the great outdoors for the great indoors you’ll be rewarded with a very warm welcome, a comfy bed and top-notch cuisine.

Built in 1818, our much-loved country house, the epitome of Georgian splendour, has been lovingly restored over the years, including a wealth of exquisite craftsmanship, including fine wood panelling and a grand handmade staircase.

Old stone fireplaces, classic leather armchairs, elegant sitting rooms, grandfather clocks – the sense of a grand but homely residence pervades. Conveniently accessible from the A1 and as Northumberland’s only four AA red star awarded hotel, in recent years it’s become very much a destination in its own right.

We have 36 handsomely appointed bedrooms, elegant lounges and a fabulous spa, swimming pool and gym, making Doxford the ideal place to unwind after exploring the delights of Northumbria.

Add to this the award-winning dining in our George Runciman restaurant, the yew maze and acres of landscaped gardens to explore and everything’s in place for a relaxing and memorable stay.

ROOMS & SUITES
A majestic, Georgian home whose luxurious bedrooms feature beautifully crafted furniture and bespoke bathrooms. A home with acre after acre of beautiful gardens all around. A home where you can indulge in bedroom upgrades, fine champagne, chocolates and flowers on arrival.

We pride ourselves on our superb service, our award-winning cuisine and our blissful spa and swimming pool – all of which you can enjoy throughout your stay. And with six dog-friendly bedrooms, there’s no need to leave anyone behind. All of the main areas of the hotel are wheelchair accessible with a wide, central corridor off which the public rooms can be easily reached.

There are eleven ground floor bedrooms of which two are fully accessible with wet rooms suitable for high dependency guests. Wheelchair users may enter the property through the morning room (entrance closest to the car park) to avoid the three steps to main entrance. There is also lift at the hotel.

The Suite
Luxury with a little extra space – our suite has been carefully laid out to include a separate living area – ideal for family groups. The bathroom includes a free-standing bath with separate walk-in shower.

Head Gardener’s Bedroom
Stylish, charming and extremely comfortable, our Classic Bedrooms offer everything you need for a relaxing break. These recently refurbished bedrooms are located in the Head Gardener’s House just 175 yards from the main Hall with their own private parking and offer a light and airy hideaway with period features, modern finishes and luxurious bedding.

Coach House
With large arched windows, original stonework and exposed beams, we have three elegant bedrooms in our restored Coach House, each with its own luxurious bathroom. The Coach House is a short walk from the hall, with its own guest parking area for extra convenience. Regrettably we are unable to provide a food and beverage room service to The Coach House.

THE GEORGE RUNCIMAN RESTAURANT
Like the master joiner from whom it takes its name, the George Runciman Restaurant is far from ordinary. With 2 AA rosettes awarded for the highest standards in cuisine and service, this is more than just another hotel restaurant. It’s a venue to savour dishes that are highly imaginative, beautifully presented and crafted using only the best seasonal produce from the local area.

Mouth-watering menus matched in quality by an eclectic wine list for an experience that is more than just a meal. Open daily for dinner to both visitors and hotel residents, between 6pm and 9pm. Advanced reservations are essential.

THE SUNDAY LUNCH
Seasonal and sensational our legendary Sunday roasts are made using only the highest quality ingredients and served with all the trimmings. Sunday lunches as they should be.

Always with proper gravy, a fabulous wine list, good local ales, a comfy sofa and a fire to warm yourself in front of. The perfect way, we believe, to round off a bracing walk in the countryside, along the coast, or a gentle nature-spotting potter around our beautiful grounds.

THE SPA
Dip in the pool, soak in a bubbling spa bath, drift off in the blissful heat of the sauna… Our Aqueous spa is a haven in which to escape the stresses and strains of modern life, and indulge in a little ‘me-time’.

As well as the large heated swimming pool, a jacuzzi, a sauna and a steam room, you can treat yourself to a range of personalised spa experiences. Soothing music and comfortable seating make it the ideal area to unwind in between treatments or chill out after a workout.

We are delighted to offer a wide range of therapeutic and beauty treatments using products from the holistic, vegan spa brand Ytsara. From one-off treatments, to full or half day pampering, spa breaks and leisure club membership, we have something to lift the spirits and soothe the body.

Slip into one of our five tranquil therapy suites and let our expert therapists leave you feeling radiant and restored. Our leisure facilities are open daily from 7.00 am until 6.00 pm. Spa treatments can be booked between 10.00 am and 6.00 pm.

MEETINGS
A very special place in a glorious setting. Secluded yet easily accessible, traditional yet forward thinking, intimate yet spacious, Doxford Hall offers a truly versatile choice for your next event.

Our five function suites, each providing that rare blend of period grandeur and modern facilities, offer the flexibility to cater for business conferences, gala dinners, fashion shows and everything else in between. And with ample free parking and good transport links, Doxford Hall is ideally located for business meetings and events whatever the size or scale.

NORTHUMBERLAND
A place to explore the great outdoors, to embrace wonderful walking country. A place blessed with fine beaches, rugged wilderness and jolly seaside towns. A sanctuary for seabirds and seals. A place to bring history to life and to view the stars under England’s finest dark skies. There’s plenty to do while you’re staying with us.

Grab a map from reception and explore our beautiful gardens or lose yourself in our award-winning yew maze. While away a few hours in our spa or our gym. But if you’re looking to venture further afield, here are some of our favourite sights within easy reach of Doxford Hall.

ALNWICK CASTLE
Owned and inhabited by the Percy family, Alnwick Castle is probably Britain’s most iconic castle and the film set for Harry Potter and Downton Abbey.

It’s a deservedly popular destination that offers something for everyone: from taking on the Dragon’s Quest and broomstick training to discovering the State Rooms and collections of fine art housed within this imposing fortress. The castle is open between the end of March and October and closed to the general public during the winter months.

THE ALNWICK GARDEN
The Duchess of Northumberland’s vision for a forgotten plot is now a one of the most visited gardens in the country. Designed for every season, it’s a joy for all the senses and a truly 21st century experience full of imagination, inspiration and fun.

The gardens boast a collection of over 4,000 plants, thousands of seasonal blooms and many opportunities to get wet and play in The Garden’s water sculptures.

BAMBURGH CASTLE
Standing 150 feet above the sea, the magnificent Bamburgh Castle is an icon of the Northumberland shoreline and has been the film set for many blockbusters. Visit and you’ll find a place full of myth, legend and over 1,400 years of history to explore in the fine state rooms, art gallery and 12th century keep.

We highly recommend the 3-mile linear walk from Seahouses harbour to Bamburgh Castle, following the coastal path that runs along the beach. It’s an easy, flat route that takes in attractive sand dunes, wildflowers and views to the nearby Farne Islands.

BARTER BOOKS
No visit to Alnwick is complete without a stop at Barter Books. Housed within the town’s old Victorian railway station, it contains one of the biggest collections of antiquarian books in the UK and you could quite literally spend half a day wandering the premises. With real fires in the winter, a model railway, station buffet and a children’s room Barter Books is must-see attraction – not just for bookworms.

CRAGSIDE ESTATE
Originally the family home of Lord Armstrong, Victorian inventor and industrialist, Cragside was the first building in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. Now in the care of the National Trust the Cragside Estate is a truly unique visitor attraction for all ages.

From the ingenious gadgetry in the main house including fire alarm buttons, telephones and a passenger lift to the estate itself with more than 30 miles of paths, lakeside walks, play areas and a Trim Trail, it’s a much-loved day out.

CHILLINGHAM CASTLE
Continuously owned by just one family line since the 1200’s, this fine stronghold is open to the public to see the alarming dungeons and torture chambers as well as the beautiful parkland and manicured gardens. You can also book a ghost tour if you dare.

FARNE ISLANDS
A birder’s paradise, The Farne Islands are home to colonies of puffins, terns, razorbills, kittiwakes, shags and guillemots. The islands also have the largest breeding colony of grey seals in England and you’ll often see them hauled up on the rocks or bobbing in the sea. Take a boat from Seahouses between Spring and Autumn for the best sightings.

MYRIAD GOLF COURSE
With more than ten golf courses located within twenty miles of Doxford Hall you’ll be spoilt for choice for scenic spots to play a round or two. Coastal courses just metres from the beach, championship courses and challenging nine hole courses offer a range options whatever your ability. Most are available on a pay and play basis. Do ask us for more details.

LINDISFARNE ISLAND
Just a few miles off the Northumberland coast, you’ll find Lindisfarne Island. Despite being cut off twice a day from the rest of world by fast-moving tides, you can drive, walk or cycle over the causeway to Holy Island (after checking the safe crossing times).

Visit the Lindisfarne Priory (the epicentre of Christianity in Anglo Saxon times), Lindisfarne Castle, spend time in the Lindisfarne museum and potter around the pretty village.

The island status protects tidal mudflats, saltmarshes and dunes which make up the Lindisfarne Nature Reserve, home to rare plants and an exciting array of wildlife. You’ll often see seals hauled up on the sand as well as the abundance of bird species.

KIELDER OBSERVATORY
An astronomical centre of excellence, second to none and site of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, Kielder Observatory is officially the best place in England to enjoy the stars. Head to Kielder for one of their hugely popular (advanced booking essential) star gazing evenings to see the skies as you’ve never seen them before.

NORTHUMBERLAND COASTAL PATH
Made for walking, the 64 miles of way-marked trails have it all: breath-taking views, golden beaches, an abundance of wildlife, history and iconic castles. From challenging long-range walks to circular jaunts punctuated with pub stops, there’s something for everyone.
