Culinary Delights at Hotel Des Indes
The striking decor of Hotel Des Indes is the perfect ambiance to enjoy our Royal Afternoon Tea full of delicious pastries or enjoy an extensive lunch or dinner both à la carte or a 3-course surprise menu at the Des Indes Lounge / Restaurant.

Des Indes Lounge Restaurant
Anyone that passes through the lobby of Hotel Des Indes, will be transported to another era. The monumental entryway, which was the location where the horse-drawn carriages with visitors entered the building, exudes a rich history.

The opulent design of the Lounge Restaurant, that is well suited to the prestige of this iconic hotel, is certainly chic while at the same time being quite warm and inviting.

The marble columns, the chandelier and the sweeping stately staircases spin the tale of the 19th-century urban town palace of Baron Van Brienen, which would later transform into the luxurious Des Indes Hotel.

From the first floor, nicknamed the Rotunda, you have a wonderful view of the Lounge / Restaurant while leaning upon the balustrade. This is the location the baron used to greet his newly arrived guests.

Dinner
Dining in Des Indes Lounge/Restaurant is a gastronomical experience. Allow yourself to be pampered by our attentive service, whose sole pleasure is to offer you an evening you will never forget.

Will you compose your own dinner à la carte or let yourself be surprised by a three course Chef’s menu? Whichever you choose, we are certain that the gratifying dishes offered by our Chef will be extremely pleasing to the palate.

Our sommelier has chosen the finest wines from the stock in our cellar for the accompanying wine selection. This will allow all the ingredients to meld into a fabulous dinner.

Hotel Des Indes is also the perfect location for a business dinner or lunch, which is also possible as private dining.

Des Indes Health Club & Spa
As of May 19, 2021, the doors of the Health Club & Spa have reopened to hotel guests. When staying at Hotel Des Indes, you can reserve a time slot during your stay to use the fitness and pool facilities. Due to limited capacity of the Health Club, a first come, first serve basis applies.

Other services, such as personal training and massage-beauty or physiotherapy treatments, private reservations and guaranteed pre-booked time slots are subject to additional charges.

Health Club
The Des Indes Health Club & Spa is renowned as a premium class fitness club. Founders Monty Macpherson and Quinten Izeboud introduced their view on result based but also feel good training coupled with insights from physical therapy, during the launch in 2005.

They have elevated fitness to a higher level, based upon the core values of movement, through this innovative notion.

Personal Training
Personal trainers are available at the gym to assist you in the use of the ultramodern fitness machines. The benefits of supervision by a personal trainer are apparent. A coach will take inventory of your wishes and expectations, will project a realistic goal together with you and will devise a workout schedule.

This is how you achieve optimal results in proportion to your efforts. On top of all this, a personal trainer is an excellent motivator who makes sure that you enjoy your workout as well as achieve your sports goals.

Wellness
We seem to forever be busy, and planning a day just for ourselves often fails to happen, due to those full schedules. Still, a little attention towards life and limb is a particularly good idea. In the Des Indes Health Club & Spa, all ingredients are at hand to have a wonderful day of relaxation.

Sauna & treatments
A visit to the sauna will soon prove the benefits of this age-old ritual. It stimulates the blood circulation, improves blood flow and promotes the drainage of waste products (detox). On top of all that it is soothing and also beneficial to your complexion.

The steam bath combines a high humidity with temperature, which dissipates the tension and fatigue from your body. After this, you can comfortably dream away in our fantastic leisure area.

The extensive menu offered by Des Indes Health Club & Spa offers a range of body and beauty treatments such as massages, scrubs, waxing, mani-pedis, physical therapy, and facials. After a visit to the spa, you will leave our wellness area feeling relaxed and radiant.

Jet Pool
Swimming is beneficial to your health. In the warm water, the muscles will relax and the body will feel more flexible. Supported by the water, gravity no longer hinders you and the shock load to your muscles and joints is reduced to a minimum.

Swimming is an excellent form of movement and you can burn off a large number of calories this way.

Jetstreams
At first sight, the heated pool at Des Indes Health Club & Spa doesn’t seem fit for swimming laps. But nothing could be further from the truth. The powerful jet streams, which offer quite an extensive countercurrent, ensure that you have to put in a considerable effort.

This is how you can cover quite a distance, even though you remain stationary in the water. Did you know by the way that personal trainer Radmilo Soda chose exactly this swimming pool to offer the candidates from the Dutch television program Obese an inspiring work-out?

Hotel Des Indes has the perfect Salon or space for any meeting. All of our Salons have plenty of natural daylight and all own the same distinctive elegant interior design as the rest of Hotel Des Indes.

The Hague Hotspots
The Hague is the city where our government is based and where our monarchs reside. The unique standing of The Hague as residence and city of Royals, offers an interesting mix of historic, monumental buildings, palaces and office towers in contemporary architectural design, which adorn the skyline of The Hague with their characteristic silhouettes.

In the nearby theaters, there is a wide range of music, drama, dance and cabaret shows on offer. In short, The Hague city center has it all and Hotel Des Indes is right in the midst of it all.

Discover The Hague by bike
The Hague is a beautiful city to discover by bicycle. Our concierge is ready to help you compile the best bike routes and will make sure your rental bike is ready to go.

City of Royals
The special connection with our Royal Family is apparent all over town. The many palaces with their rich history are a testament to this.

The Lange Voorhout Palace is situated a stone’s throw away from Hotel Des Indes, and if you walk down the Lange Voorhout avenue in search of the Noordeinde Palace, you will first stumble upon a hidden historic jewel: the Kneuterdijk Palace.

In the Great Church, which rises high above the Hague with its hexagonal steeple, members of the royal family were wed, and princes and princesses were baptized. In the Palace Gardens, you can view art, practice yoga or enjoy a picnic.

Kneuterdijk Palace
Following along the extended area of the Lange Voorhout you will find a historical jewel which is unknown to many: The Kneuterdijk Palace. Although it’s not as well known as the Noordeinde Palace, the rich history of this building is considerably intertwined with episodes from the life of our Royal family.

King William I, bought this house for his son William II, who took up residence there with his wife Anna Paulowna, after extensive renovations. A new dining hall, ballroom and a small chapel where added, and to give the palace a more modern allure the exterior was painted white.

This is the reason why it was nicknamed the Little White Palace. William III also chose Kneuterdijk Palace as his residence. Queen Juliana chose to exclusively use it as her working quarters.

Rich History
It was William II who had the Gothic hall built as an annex, meant to house his extensive collection of paintings. This Hall was also used for wedding ceremonies and worship services.

Now the Gothic Hall is a small concert hall, where shows are regularly performed. At this moment the Supreme Administrative Court uses Kneuterdijk Palace. The Supreme Administrative Court is an advisory body of the government and also of the highest administrative Court in The Netherlands.

Noordeinde Palace
Noordeinde Palace is the working quarter for King Willem Alexander. In times gone by both King William III and Queen-mother Emma, as well as Queen Wilhelmina have resided here.

If the palace walls could speak, they would regale of fairytale weddings and births of princesses which occurred here, but also of the bereaved that mourned their beloved, who were laid in state here. Noordeinde Palace is also the stage for the Royal ceremonies of offering the credentials of new ambassadors.

They arrive in a ceremonial horse-drawn carriages and are presented with an honorary salute by four drum rolls, followed by the national anthem of the country in question played by the Royal Military Band. After inspection of the guard of honor, they are welcomed inside by the King.

Palace Gardens
Because the Noordeinde Palace serves as working quarters, it is generally not open to the public, except for a few days during the summer. However, it is possible to visit the elegant Palace Gardens, which are situated between the Royal palace, the Royal Stables and the Royal Archives.

The Palace Gardens are an ideal spot to enjoy a delicious picnic and from May to September yoga classes are offered here on Sunday mornings. Since 2017 it is possible to walk the seven paths of the classic labyrinth, which is delineated by stones.

There are two entrances to the garden, located on Prinsessewal and Prinsestraat. The garden has open free access from sunrise to sunset, and you can enjoy beautiful lawns, romantic flowerbeds, art objects, ponds and old majestic trees.

The Great St. Jacob’s Church
One of the oldest buildings in The Hague, the Great Church, also known as St. Jacob’s Church, has a strong bond with our Royal family. In the Great Church, members of the Royal family were wed, and princes and princesses were baptized.

The breathtaking interior includes Coats of Arms referring to the gathering of Knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece and the imposing tomb of Admiral Jacob van Wassenaer Obdam, commander of the Dutch fleet in the 17th century.

Spectacular view
The hexagonal steeple is 92.5 meters (303 ft) high and has served as a landmark for lost travelers. The tower also proved to be useful for the timely spotting of dangers that could threaten the city. Another feature was that of a fire observation post, where tower guards watched over The Hague while the city lay asleep.

A tour is offered every Saturday and Sunday at 13.00 and 15.00 hours. During the ascent of the 288 steps, the guide will occasionally pause to let you catch your breath and share some facts and anecdotes with you. Once you have reached the top you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city.

Lange Voorhout Palace
The Lange Voorhout Palace can count many monarchs and even an emperor as its inhabitants, although the latter only stayed there briefly. William II bought the palace for his son Henry, Queen-mother Emma lived there in winter, and the queens Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix used it as their working quarters.

Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife Marie Louse of Austria stayed here in 1811 during a short official visit to The Hague. Queen Emma took up residence in the palace after her daughter’s wedding in 1901 and would reside here till she passed away in 1934.

The Escher Museum was established here in 1992. In its function as a museum, this property is the only public building where you can see how affairs were run in times that it still functioned as a palace.

Residence
Normally the buildings of parliament, where a country is governed from, are located in the country’s capital. The Netherlands are an exception to that rule.

In the historic center of The Hague the following buildings are found: Binnenhof (Inner Court), Ridderzaal (Hall of Knights), Eerste Kamer (Senate), Tweede Kamer (House of Representatives) and het Torentje (the Little Tower) where the Prime-Minister resides.

Buildings where important decisions are made pertaining to the wellbeing of the nation and all of its citizens. The Hague is where history is being written and the future of democracy is determined.

Binnenhof
During a guided tour over the Binnenhof, you can admire the neo-gothic fountain designed by Pierre Cuypers, which is topped by a gilded statue of William II of Holland, made by the artist Ludwig Jünger.

This fountain was a gift from affluent citizens of The Hague, who in doing so showed their appreciation for the renovation of the Binnenhof.

The Hall of Knights which dates from the 13th century, is where the yearly event of the Troonrede (royal address) is presented by the king on Prinsjesdag (Prince’s Day). This hall originally was a party palace for the counts of Holland.

Now it is the location where our head of state informs the citizens of the government’s plans for the next year. Olympic sportsmen and women are honored in the Hall of Knights and receive their royal distinctions here.

For anyone who cannot be in The Hague on the third Tuesday in September, but does want to know everything about Prince’s Day, the Royal address and the Golden Carriage, the Historical Museum of The Hague hosts a permanent exhibit in the visitors center under the Hall of Knight named “The Prinsjesdag experience”.

House of Representatives
During your guided tour you can also visit the lower house of parliament (Tweede Kamer). The Prime Minister’s Little Tower is located on the Hofvijver (Court Pond).

Contrary to the name this actually isn’t a pond, but a natural dune lake, that is fed by the Haagse Beek (The Hague Stream). Until this present day the Court Pond is still connected to the dunes near the beach resort of Kijkduin.

The Little Tower, currently used as the office of the Prime-Minister, initially had a different purpose. It was the summer gazebo for the counts of Holland, which was connected to a shady garden with a draw bridge. This garden later became the location of the Mauritshuis museum.

Peace & Justice
The Hague is also the city of international justice. In 1913 the Peace Palace was opened, erected on the estates of Rustenburg and Buitenlust. The motto of the Peace Palace is ‘Peace by Justice’.

In this national monument several peace conferences were organized and now the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitrage reside here. The Peace Palace regularly hosts events for organizations that search peaceful resolutions for international disputes.

Peace Palace
The original design in the neo-renaissance style of architect Louis Cordonnier included four towers, but the budget that had been contributed by Andrew Carnegie was not sufficient to cover that.

This is the reason why the number of towers at the Peace Palace was reduced from four to two. The towers accommodate the courtrooms, the most important chambers in the building.

There is a visitor’s center near the Peace Palace, but guided tours are only offered a few weekends a year. The International Criminal Court is also situated in The Hague, a permanent court for the prosecution of persons suspected of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Shopping
A stay in The Hague is incomplete without visiting the exclusive specialty stores in the many welcoming shopping areas, which are abundantly spread around the Buurtschap 2005 quarter and Hofkwartier (Royal Quarter).

You can find antique dealers, exclusive tea shops, trendy lifestyle shops, coffee roasters, fashion boutiques, jewelers, shops full of interior design and art galleries. The Denneweg is known as the antique street and on the Noordeinde art prevails.

They each have their own charm and a surprising range of shops that promote and uphold high standards of service.

Denneweg
The Denneweg is a pleasant shopping area, where time seems to have stood still. The beautiful part of old The Hague, with its impressive facades is reminiscent of times gone by.

Lovers of antiques all have their own addresses here where they can snatch up the best pieces, but even if you are looking for something else, you will surely succeed in finding it here. The Denneweg, in fact, offers a varied array of shops that also host fashion, beauty and lifestyle.

Surprise someone with a present from the exclusive tea shop or pamper yourself with a package full of aromatic beans from the coffee roaster. Do you want to borrow a modern work of art? That is also possible on the Denneweg.

Noordeinde
The elegant Noordeinde (northern end) in the Royal Quarter, houses a number of galleries besides a large number of luxury shops. It, therefore, is no surprise that it has been nicknamed the ‘art street’ of The Hague. This is also the place to be if you are looking for a jeweler’s workshop or a specialized tobacconist.

Fashionistas will succeed in putting together a new outfit here and visiting a hairdresser or beauty salon will finish the metamorphosis. And there is the odd chance that you might run into the king on his way to work at Noordeinde Palace.

Lange Voorhout
The name of Lange Voorhout avenue derives from the fact that it was an offshoot from the Haagse Bos (The Hague forest). This stately, broad strolling avenue is surrounded by rows of impressive lime trees and is a true example of beauty and serenity.

The famous “Unter den Linden” boulevard in Berlin was inspired upon this avenue. The avenue is flanked by monumental buildings, amongst which are a palace that is now used as a museum, as well as a theater and an artist association named Pulchri. And of course, last but not least the iconic Hotel Des Indes.

Four seasons
In spring the cheerfully colored crocuses and the shiny green leaves provide a color explosion and in the fall the golden yellow autumn gown of the lime trees gives the whole area a magical aura.

Where in days of yore the wealthy folk of The Hague sauntered down the middle of the avenue, nowadays contemporary city dwellers and day-trippers walk along the crisp path of broken shells.

This mixture of broken shells and sand was necessary to keep the horse-drawn carriages from being bogged down in the muddy sand during rainfalls.

Events
All year round several events are organized on these center walkways, ranging from a carnival fair on the King’s Birthday to exhibitions of statues and sand sculptures.

From the middle of May till September you can find an antiques and book market here twice a week, and in winter a cozy Christmas market is organized.

The street lanterns that were renewed in 2009, have adjustable LED lights in them which can highlight art objects during any of the summer festivals. The golden crowns on the lanterns are a reference to the route that the Golden Carriage follows on Prinsjesdag (Prince’s Day).

Literary History
You can also admire the literary celebrity Louis Couperus on the Lange Voorhout. Sculptor Kees Verkade made the beautiful sculpture of the author of masterpieces such as Eline Vere. On the natural stone pedestal, you can read the quote: “If I am anything, I am a citizen of The Hague”.

In local vernacular the Lange Voorhout was also referred to as the Long Lane of Limes (de Lange Lindelaan). This nickname is also found in the Dutch nursery rhyme ‘Liesje leerde Lotje lopen langs de Lange Lindelaan’. The Lange Voorhout is a magnificent portion of The Hague in any season.

Museums & Theaters
The inner-city of The Hague has many museums and theaters. Lovers of art and culture find more than their money’s worth here. From the curious prints made by the graphic artist M.C. Escher and the world-famous paintings from the Golden Age to the largest painting in the Netherlands.

You can admire them all in the nearby museums. Fans of the renowned writer Couperus – who was from The Hague – can find out all they want to know about this literary celebrity in the Couperus Museum. In the nearby theaters there is a wide range of music, drama, dance and cabaret shows on offer.

Escher in the Palace
The Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher acquired international fame with his imaginative prints, lithographs and woodcuts. He is most well-known for his regular tessellations, optical illusions and ‘impossible depictions’.

A permanent exposition of the best pieces by this unique artist is exhibited in the Escher Museum, amongst which is the astonishing Metamorphosis I.

Mauritshuis
The walls of this museum are adorned with pieces from the old masters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. The best Dutch painters of the Golden age are represented in the Mauritshuis.

Top pieces like the Girl with the Pearl by Vermeer, the Anatomical Lesson of dr. Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt, the Goldfinch (het Puttertje) by Fabritius and The Bull by Potter are part of the permanent collection of this museum.

Panorama Mesdag
Mesdag Panorama is a cylindrical panoramic painting, measuring 14 meters (46 feet) in height and with a circumference of 120 meters (394 feet). The artist Hendrik Willem Mesdag painted this panoramic view of the North Sea, the dunes, The Hague and Scheveningen in 1881.

He was among the artists of the ‘The Hague School’. Instead of autographing his work, Mesdag portrayed his wife Sientje in the panorama, as was customary in panoramic paintings.

Couperus Museum
Are you a fan of the literary masterpieces Eline Vere, The Hidden Force) and Old People and the Things that Pass? Or did the sculpture of Louis Couperus on the Lange Voorhout spark your interest when you sauntered by? In any case, a visit to the Couperus Museum is always a good idea.

On the charming first floor of the property on the Javastraat you will learn everything there is to know about this literary giant and there are always regularly changing shows on exhibit.

This well-loved author from The Hague still sparks the imagination and his body of work has already had many cinematographic adaptations.

Meermanno Museum
Meermanno Museum is the ‘Home of the Book’ and is within walking range of Des Indes Hotel. The museum has a large collection of medieval manuscripts and early prints, but also a collection of 1515 miniature books, that had a miniature library built for it specifically crafted according to the design of a dollhouse.

There are ongoing exhibits about anything to do with books, such as illustrators, the art of book printing and type designers.

Theaters
Des Indes Hotel is the ideal base camp for visits to one of the many theaters in the city center.

Make reservations for a music or dance show, watch a play or enjoy stand-up comedy in Diligentia, Koninklijke Schouwburg (the Royal Theater), Theater aan het Spui, Korzo, music venue Paard, cinema Filmhuis and the Gothische Zaal.

At the moment a new theater complex named OCC is under construction on the Spuiplein and is expected to be completed in June of 2020.

Literature & Music
As far as literature is concerned, the international literary festival Winternachten (Winters Eves) is organized in January and the Crossing Border Festival, where more than one hundred authors, artists and musicians from the whole world gather, takes place in fall.

The area around the Bierkade, Dunne Bierkade, Groenewegje, Hooikade and Veenkade provide a platform for the festival ‘Jazz in de Gracht’ (Jazz on the Canal).

Events
The cultural agenda of The Hague is bursting at its seams with the many events that it hosts. Dance at festivals such as Jazz in de Gracht or feast your eyes on the spectacular firework shows in Scheveningen.

Oriental flavors at the Tong Tong fair, finger food dishes from the food trucks of Rrrollend The Hague and snacks from all over the world during the Haagse Wereld Hapjes on the Lange Voorhout.

Hotel Des Indes also organizes a number of events that you should not miss. During the intimate coffee concerts, you can enjoy riveting performances up close.

With our special packages, the atmospheric decoration and the lavish menu of the Des Indes Lounge and the Restaurant Des Indes are, of course, fully tailored to the festive season. An event at Hotel Des Indes guarantees an extraordinary experience.
