The Hotel Haïtza – the rock in Basque language – is deeply rooted in the collective memory of Pyla’s locals. Built in 1930 by the visionary Louis Gaume, the neo-Basque architectured establishment is a cornerstone of the golden age and the rise of the Silver Coast.

Haïtza quickly became an emblematic place welcoming famous personalities: the actress Annabella, the designer Jeanne Lanvin, the Rothschild or Michelin families, but also the performers Charles Trenet and Yves Montand.

The hotel became the unavoidable meeting place for the Arcachon Bay enthousiasts, the epicenter of an eccentric and cosmopolitan cultural bustle.

Driven by the desire to preserve and revive the spirit of the place, Sophie and William Techoueyres wished to give a new lease of life to Ha(a)ïtza, with that something special that makes their strength and success : a perfect blend of simplicity, intimacy and elegance.

Their objective : is to reawaken the hotel’s panache of yesteryears, to welcome their friends and let them discover the lifestyle and the charms of this region that they adore.

Already behind the revival of the Hotel La Co(o)rniche, they gave a second wind to Ha(a)ïtza, thanks to a complete rehabilitation by Philippe Starck, they can continue building history on the banks of the Bay.

Philippe Starck imagined Ha(a)ïtza as a paradox : from the weight of a Rock arise fantasy worlds emerging from our collective imaginations.

The historical building is a gateway to areas with distinctive features that are unveiled to the guest and by the guest. In an elegant eclecticism, Ha(a)ïtza is a series of abstractions, of spaces only dreamed of.

From the fertile ground offered by the region, Starck retained the sand of the ‘Dune du Pyla’ as one of the constituent elements of the site. Organic and mineral, solid and moving, the paradoxical nature of sand is at the foundation of the imaginary of the place.

It is the link between the outdoors and indoors, anchoring the hotel to its region, inviting to travel to otherworldliness, to known or unknown lands.

‘Terra incognita’ is found in the phantasmagorical universe of the Grand Salon. A fascinating realm, a bourgeois living room in which family photos and objects stand alongside memories of trips in Africa.

The sensation of change of scenery is emphasized by the deliberately radical transition between the different public areas.

Thus, the Grand Salon, this odd trophy room in which the mirage of an old lieutenant-colonel could appear, opens onto an immaculate reception which minimalism reminds New York’s modern art galleries.

PHILIPPE STARCK
« Ha(a)ïtza is not a recent anecdote in the Southwest nor in the Arcachon Bay. It’s neither cute or charming, but chic and cosmopolitan. Everything there is ‘artistic’. Ha(a)ïtza evoques the idea of something, of an imaginary place that has always been there, emancipated from all materiality. » Ph.S

The question did not arise : for William and Sophie Techoueyres, after they renovated La Co(o)rniche, a new collaboration with the designer was more than evidently obvious.

Discovering an object or a place designed by Philipe Starck means entering a world of intense imagination, fertile surprises and phantasmagoria.

For more than 30 years, this unsusual and polymorphous creator, designer and architect, outside the conventions, has always been present in our daily life, creating objects « well » before thinking about the esthetics, and iconic destinations that take members of its « cultural tribe » elsewhere, outside themselves, and above all, to the best.

Via his « democratic design » concept, increasing the quality of objects to lower prices in order to supply the best to a greater number, Starck has emerged as a pioneer when design was intended exclusively for an elite.

Few areas have not been explored by the creator : from furniture for private homes to catalogue orders, from motorcycles to mega yachts, and even the artistic management of projects for space travels… among others. Starck’s ecological convictions were obvious way before it became popular in respect of our planet.

He soon created the Good Goods catalog, the catalog of non-products for the non-consumers of the future moral market, his own organic food company, and more recently he is developing the revolutionary concept of « democratic ecology », by creating personal wind turbines at affordable prices, which will lead to solar boats, hydrogen vehicles…

ARA STARCK
« The stained-glass windows are by definition bound to the impalpable, and are constantly changing. They come to life by the light that runs through them and transform hour by hour, day to night.

This is one of the most poetic techniques. Stained-glass windows have a story, lives, with hidden faces. The elements appear and disappear. I like to think that it’s the echo of the tides making appear or disappear the sandbanks of the Arcachon Bay. » Ara Starck

In the style of an art gallery, the Hotel Ha(a)ïtza’s reception area opens out over one large standing, illuminated by the colored windows created by the designer, an organic and moving masterpiece only existing by the immateriality of light.

After attending the highest art schools, at first in France, then in London and ending in New York… Ara is on all fronts.

As a plastic artist, a painter, but also a musician, with THE TWO group, she is just like her unclassifiable and multidisciplinary father … Such is the state of mind of Ara, cultivating the art of twisting the limits, which will lead her to work with non-standard supports.

ROOMS
The Hotel Ha(a)ïtza is a neo-Basque architecture, typical of the region, with 38 rooms, suites, junior suites and apartment. Light wood, whitetones with a touch of steel : the rooms with contemporary design abide by Philippe Starck’s best codes, for a refined and unpretentious style.

The glazed shower rooms, equipped with walk-in showers, open onto pleasant, warm and personalized rooms bathed in sunlight. The genius of the designer. The bed, centerpiece of the room, faces the window, like an invitation to reverie, carried by the softness of the pines.

LE SKIFF CLUB RESTAURANT
In a mythical local yacht club atmosphere, the restaurant welcomes you in an impressive veranda adjoining the Grand Salon. An elegant and family atmosphere, slightly outdated as in those places that have always existed.

Three skiffs are suspended from the white frame of the veranda. The boats float above the tables, confusing the landmarks of the guests. Exposed to the walls, boater’s hats, photos of trainings and nautical races remind the proud hours of the successes of yesteryear.

In control of this new thirty seater establishment : is the double-starred chef Stéphane Carrade. Two stars at Chez Ruffet, one star at La Guérinière, Stéphane Carrade is also former chef of the Grand Hotel de Bordeaux.

However, this hearty eater, local boy, designs signature cuisine, which brings back to former glory the most basic products, local produce, sublimating the specialties by playing with new amazing and subtle combinations of taste. Between tradition and avant-garde, its credo: is « progressive local cuisine ».

The menu offers four starters, four main courses and four desserts, and widens each day its gourmet offer made from local seasonal products, depending on the chef’s inspiration and the market of the day.

The wine list has more than 1 000 references, and offers the possibility of perfect marriage between food and wine. With the same precision and respect for the products, Chef Stéphane Carrade also concocts the Sunday Brunch. Give pleasure, offer a gift card…

THE BAR
The Hotel’s Bar is an invitation to discover a warm atmosphere dear to Philippe Starck. A unique kaleidoscope of original and vibrant colors will transport you in the warmth of an old Brazilian bar.

The acoustic canvas on the ceiling designed by Ara Starck envelopes the bar in a shimmering atmosphere, with eclectic music and comfortable seating ; it is the perfect place to relax at any time of the day, and share festive moments between friends or lovers.

At nightfall, it is time for creative cocktails concocted by a very inspired bartender. A must for savvy enthusiasts, the Bar Ha(a)ïtza is a key spot of the Bay.

CAFÉ HA(A)ÏTZA
Open since June 2015, located on the other side of the boulevard, Café Ha(a)ïtza cultivates a simple and relaxed atmosphere. A luminous wood dresses the place up to the ceiling. Old photos, fishing trophies and hanging hooks give this warm brasserie the feel of an old fisherman’s landmark.

Indoors and outdoors : cedar wood furniture and impressive marble tables. The floor is laid with small bricks and a mosaic of colorful cement tiles.

« The Ha(a)ïtza Café is just the ‘brasserie’ of our collective memory: timeless, large, warm, lively but with the difference of being at Pyla, in front of the sea, near the dune and that the bosses are the wonderful Sophie and William of La Co(o)rniche.

Nothing out of the ordinary but the result of all of the above is unique and makes it once again a new paradise. » Ph.S

Philippe Starck imagined central bars, for more conviviality : the place is a meeting point for the residents of the Bay, summer visitors and tourists, a place for exchanges and Rendez-vous.

You can find all of William Techoueyres most loyal teams in the kitchens, who have been by his side for years. At your service : a young and passionate team, who is friendly and dynamic.

THE FAMILY BAKERY
At very entrance of the Hotel, the Patisserie welcomes all gourmands in a poetic setting where luminous marble, natural wood and raw piqued concrete meet in a creative harmony.

The large swiveling mirrors, the greedinous of the lemon-yellow walls and the giant cups that decorate the Patisserie, remind us of the surrealist experience of Ha(a)ïtza, and carry us into an awakened dreamland between Lewis Caroll and Walt Disney, which revives in everyone a childish nostalgia.

A poetry announcing the creations of pastry chef Antony Prunet, his trusted right hand man, Romain Breton and her assistant chef, Amaryllis Desorbais.

At 30, Antony Prunet is one of the most promising pastry chefs in France. World champion in 2012 for ‘cannelés’, he has already collaborated with several great starred chefs.

He invites us to come and rediscover, on a Sunday, the great classics of pastry: Paris-Brest, mille-feuille or rum baba and also offers a selection of take away cakes for a snack on the beach or a boat ride on the Banc d’Arguin – cannelés, eclairs , cakes, tarts and clafoutis.

Open all day, the Tea House has a varied selection of infusions and organic teas to accompany poetic sweet treats.
