Prinsenhof Groningen is a 4-star superior boutique hotel in the city centre of Groningen. Standing in the shadows of the Martini Tower, bordering the walled garden called Prinsentuin, the hotel is situated in one of the city’s oldest and most beautiful buildings.

Hotel Prinsenhof has 34 unique rooms, two high-end restaurants and four classy private areas for parties or business meetings. Prinsenhof offers exquisite luxury, seven days a week – be it for a stay in the hotel or for lunch, drinks or dinner.

Surrounded by green, the peacefulness behind Prinsenhof’s distinctive gate is almost tangible when you embark on a stay at this unique location in Groningen’s city centre. Prinsenhof’s team is dedicated to exceeding your expectations.

THE HISTORY
The Groninger Monumentenfonds (Groningen Monumental Fund) described Prinsenhof as one of the most beautiful buildings in the city of Groningen, and we couldn’t agree more. ‘There are very few buildings that tell so much about the city’s history as this monument’, said to Dick Janssen, former director of the Groningen Monumental Fund.

The building’s origin lies with the Brethren of Communal Life, who lived here rather modestly around 1436 and rebuilt their home to an impressive church in which the brasserie is situated.

Where used to be the church’s nave, is now a bar; where used to be the chancel, is now an elevated lounge. The ancient bricks along the sides of the brasserie still show traces of the old Crosses.

In 1569 the complex was rebuilt into an episcopal palace of the first bishop of Groningen and Drenthe. After he deceased, the palace was again rebuilt, this time into the ‘Herenhof’ (Master’s Court), which was home to the governor George Lalaing.

This was the beginning of Prinsenhof’s history of being the governors’ residence, among which the princes of Orange-Nassau. In the 17th century, the Prinsentuin, the garden, was edified. The letters W and A, which you can find in the current garden’s box hedges, stem from governor Willem Frederik and his wife Albertine Agnes.

You can enter the Prinsentuin through the sundial gate at the Turfsingel. The special sundial, which is the gate’s eponym, was placed in 1731. It shows you the time in various ways.

The Latin text has the following message: ‘Past’s time is nothing, future’s is uncertain, present’s is fragile. Don’t waste yours.’ To kill time, the ladies of the court strolled through the two tree arches. The Prinsentuin is still well-known for those fairy-tale green paths.

After the last governor left in 1795 as a consequence of the French Revolution, the Prinsenhof was used as a military hospital until 1905. During WWI, the military police stayed at the Prinsenhof.

This was followed by a period of vacancy and decay until the radio and tv station RTV Noord occupied the complex. After a thorough renovation, in 2012, Prinsenhof became a 4-star boutique hotel with two high-end restaurants. This is the first time in its entire history that the Prinsenhof became publicly accessible.

ROYAL SUITE
The Royal Suite is a classic, spacious suite with an extravagant bathroom and unique view on the Prinsentuin, the Prince Garden. The suite is 55 square meters big and has a king-sized bed.

LOFT SUITE
The Loft Suite is our biggest room with a separate seating area, half-open bedroom and double rain shower with a view. It is 70 square meters with a king-sized bed. Two extra beds can be added to the Loft Suite. Unfortunately, it is not accessible via elevator.

JUNIOR SUITE
The Junior Suites are extra-large double rooms with various extravagant details like a fireplace or canopy bed. They are 35-45 square meters in size. The bathrooms, some of which are on a mezzanine level, have a rain shower and a bathtub. All beds are king-sized.

DELUXE ROOM
The Deluxe rooms are spacious double rooms in various styles with a rain shower and bathtub. They are 30-35 square meters. One of those rooms just has a rain shower with a very special view. All of the beds, with one exception of a twin room with two 120 cm beds, are king-sized.

DINING
In addition to the luxurious hotel rooms, the monumental building holds two restaurant concepts, each with a very different culinary experience.

For a full-evening programme with a view on the monumental garden, the Prinsentuin, you are welcome in the Fine Dining Restaurant Nassau. At the brasserie, with adjacent terrace at the courtyard, you can enjoy breakfast, an informal lunch, drinks and festive dinners.

BRASSERIE
In the brasserie lies the origin of the Prinsenhof complex. In 1436, The Brethren of Communal Life rebuilt their, up until then modest, accommodation into an impressive church. The brasserie is therefore the centre of Prinsenhof, which you can sense everywhere.

Every single day, the brasserie is the place to be for a variety of guests. Hotel guests and walk-ins drink a cup of coffee; when the weather allows it, you can enjoy a quick lunch on the courtyard terrace.

At the elevated back, on what used to be the chancel, lunch, drinks or diner is served next to an impressive mantelpiece. The cocktail bar is situated in the lounge’s lower area, the former nave.

RESTAURANT NASSAU
Fine dining restaurant Nassau is situated in the former bed chamber of the Prince of Nassau. Overlooking the monumental Prinsenhof gardens, our guests dine in a luxurious ambiance.

We are proud of our heritage and the soil that we live on. The Northern parts of The Netherlands have so much to offer. Chef Christian de Vries, souschef Dion te Velde and their team prefer to use local products.

The monumental building has been a wedding location since as early as 1659. It was in that year that the first and only baronial wedding took place in Groningen. Todays’ Prinsenhof is proud of this rich history which is evident throughout the building’s unique decor.

Give a festive reception with a subsequent intimate dinner in Restaurant Nassau. Make use of the fairy-tale yard, the Prinsentuin, with a toast at the back terrace.
