Safaris
Although the land has remained unspoiled and perfectly preserved for thousands of years, Nambiti Game Reserve has a fairly recent history. Back in 1998, two friends, Rob le Sueur and Gordon Howard, were trout fishing together and Rob shared his dream of creating a Big Five reserve that was close to Durban, with his friend.

His only struggle was that he couldn’t find any land that was suitable for starting this dream. A year later, Gordon heard of a group of cattle farms being put on sale just 23km East of Ladysmith. He got in touch with Rob and soon thereafter they set off on horseback to explore the area.

The immense beauty of the area immediately captured both their hearts and they decided to purchase the land. In 2000, Nambiti Private Game Reserve was born.

The next five years consisted of Rob working together with conservationists and wildlife experts to plan work on the land. Fences and alien vegetation was systematically cleared and a range of game was introduced to the reserve.

Nambiti Big 5 Game Reserve is home to elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino, as well as over 30 other animal species. It is also rich in birdlife and indigenous flora. The area surrounding Nambiti Big 5 Game Reserve is steeped in military history, with many of the region’s most brutal conflicts playing out within a stone’s throw of the reserve.

The sites of the Battles of Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift, the Siege of Ladysmith and the Battle of Blood River are a close drive away, and sobering memorials from the area’s turbulent history dotted across the landscape. Guests can then make their own arrangements or lodge management can assist as necessary and even provide registered local tour guides if guests so wish.

Nambiti Reserve: A natural marvel
Boasting 23 000 acres of unspoiled wilderness, Nambiti Reserve located at Elandslaagte is a natural marvel. Whilst we’re certainly blessed to call this reserve home, we’ve watched in awe as it has grown from strength to strength, welcoming and inspiring over 25 000 local and international guests every single year. Here’s a little more about what makes Nambiti Reserve truly unique.

A mere two and a half hours from Durban and four hours from Johannesburg, you’ll find Nambiti Reserve. This makes it (and Nambiti Hills Private Game Experience) a great choice for those who want to enjoy a Big 5 experience without travelling for extended periods of time.

As a place of charm and exceptional diversity, Nambiti is rich in history too. Situated on the plains where the Anglo-Boer battles once unfolded, the reserve’s most recent fight for supremacy is now the exclusive realm of its teeming wildlife population.

Nambiti is one of the few reserves in our nation, where you can enjoy the wonders of an African safari and the magic of the Big 5 free from the threat of malaria. This makes it a wonderful option for family visits too.

Easily regarded as one of South Africa’s most ambitious conservation initiatives, Nambiti Reserve balances the needs of the local community alongside conservation efforts.

The reserve has generated almost 300 full-time jobs and remains dedicated to up-skilling and promoting talent to leadership positions. Community representatives sit on the board and have a voice in how the reserve is managed and maintained.

The European Roller: An exotic visitor to our reserve
As the name suggests, these birds have a wide distribution across the likes of Southern Europe and Asia. When colder weather approaches, they head South towards Africa, choosing the sub-Saharan region to enjoy our landscapes and its smaller inhabitants that can be feasted on.

You could say that these birds chase an endless summer, choosing to frequent regions that offer them more sunshine and better feeding opportunities. Here’s a little more on them.

European Rollers get their name from the rolling motions they display during acts of courtship or territorial flights. They are monogamous and fiercely territorial, doing all they can to protect their partners, homes and young.

The European Roller’s chicks know how to deter opportunistic predators. They’re known to vomit a terrible smelling orange liquid over themselves if they feel like they’re at risk of being taken.

This has two functions, the primary being to put the predator off of eating them. The secondary is to warn the parents as they fly back to the nest that they ought to beware of danger.

With their diet being made up of insects, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians, European Rollers will hunt from a perched position, swooping down to the ground where prey can be caught. Thereafter, they’ll head to another perch to enjoy their meal.

As much as they are summer visitors, they aren’t summer breeders. European Rollers are winter breeders, choosing to have their young in countries like Russia, Portugal, Spain and Poland. It’s also the only Roller that breeds in Europe.

Autumn comes to a close at Nambiti Reserve

The end of autumn is here, and this means we’re slowly making way for the wonders of winter. But what does this mean for our reserve and the incredible species who call it home? We chatted to our experienced guides who were only too happy to share their knowledge with us.

For starters, the end of May is a great seasonal change in the bush all round. The length of days is noticeably shorter and this has a large effect on animals, birds and more.

It marks the beginning of the hibernation season for various creatures such as reptiles and frogs, with the last of the migratory birds having left for the northern hemisphere by now as food resources are scarcer than in the summer months.

Reptiles in particular become far more active at the end of autumn as they expertly plan their feeds before the cold signals for them to go into hibernation. With enough food storage and fat increases to last them over the colder months, these species are able to withstand winter and its chill.

On the plant side of things, many plants have already seeded by now or are in preparing to drop their seed pods or disperse them by wind or other means. A lot of trees are going into a state of rest and as a result, many will withdraw their nutrients from their leaves.

This ends up creating the various autumn colours we get to see at this time of the year, characterised by yellows, reds and browns. How do they happen? Simply by these trees retracting their chlorophyll from their leaves to store it in their bark and roots.

With all the nutrients now being stored here, you’ll often see many antelope and animals like warthogs change their eating habits, choosing to eat the roots in search of the “good stuff.”

Where groundwater is concerned, the end of autumn is when we see this start to dry up, with concentrations around watering holes becoming more prevalent. This has an impact on the grass, which starts to yellow, making predators tougher to spot for unsuspecting prey.

Days are shorter and nights are longer. With the nights making way for cooler winter evenings, this creates the perfect backdrop for a glass of red and of course, gathering around the fire pit for storytime of a day well spent in the wild.
