THE HISTORY
It all started in 1857 with the English aristocrat Earl Granville and Marchese d’Azeglio, a Sardinian Minister who decided to found a new club intended as a London base for travelling diplomats. There are a few institutions that can claim to have had Winston Churchill, Henry James and Ian Fleming as members.

Here at St. James’s Hotel and Club we have been attracting such luminaries for more than 160 years. First as a gentlemen’s club and now as a five-star hotel for those in search of a luxurious, discreet bolthole in one of London’s most desirable areas of Mayfair.

  • 1857 – The English aristocrat Earl Granville and Marchese d’Azeglio, a Sardinian Minister, after a dispute at the Travellers club decided to found a new club intended as a London base for travelling diplomats. In April 1859, Francis Cavendish sent out a circular from the Foreign Office to every British Embassy and legation to recruit members for the new St. James’s Club.
  • 1860 – As well as an international clientele it attracted important members of the British upper classes such as Lord Randolph Churchill and luminaries such as Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild. Charles Dickens writes: “members are elected by ballot, but members of the corps diplomatique, of the English diplomatic service, and of the Foreign Office, may be admitted without ballot, under certain restrictions”.
  • 1890 – The St. James’s Club was at the height of its prosperity during the years before the First World War and continued to attract the cream of London society. Henry James used the club to study English colloquialisms and Arthur Sullivan, the composer of the Savoy Operas, was also a member for some years. The subscription was eleven guineas and the entrance fee twenty-five guineas.
  • 1920 – Sir Winston Churchill was often seen in the club during the 1930s and during the Second World War, the club was briefly the home of Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. Other notable members of St. James’s Club included: Sir Harry Verney, 4th Baronet MP (politician); Victor Hay, 21st Earl of Erroll (diplomat); Sir Murdoch Macdonald (politician and engineer); Lord Ivor Spencer-Churchill (cousin of Winston Churchill).
  • 1950 – Backgammon was especially popular with club members, it was played more assiduously than at any other London club. Large sums were won and lost; the leading players in the mid 50s were the Marquess of Milford Haven, Lord Pender and Rupert Bellville. A member, Charles Jerdawin, won the world championship in 1968. During the 60s ladies have been admitted for dinner.
  • 1970 – During the early 70s financial difficulties led to the closure of the St. James’s Club.
  • 1980 – The St. James’s Club reopened thanks to international sportsman and financier Peter De Savary using the premises at 7-8 Park Place. These were originally built in 1892 as apartments for gentlemen.

The club regained its popularity and it became well known as a place for good food, good wine and the best parties, usually hosted by someone from the film world. The club committee was chaired by Sir John Mills.

Members included Liza Minelli, Dudley Moore, Peter Townshend, Sir Michael Caine, Sir Sean Connery, Tim Rice, Michael Parkinson and Lord Attenborough. And with visits by Sir Elton John as well as Tom Selleck and Christopher Reeve, it is not surprising that it became known as one of London’s most popular clubs.

  • 1986 – The St. James’s Club bought the Sunset Tower in Hollywood, a luxury apartment building home to Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne, Howard Hughes and Frank Sinatra, to name a few. After a $46 million renovation it became a luxury hotel.
  • 2006 – St. James’s Club receives a complete makeover by famous designer Anne Maria Jagdfeld, from Berlin. This dramatic Victorian townhouse has been reinvented to recapture the feel of an esteemed gentleman’s club in a contemporary way combined with the comfort and professionalism you would expect in one of the most prestigious townhouse hotels in London.
  • 2008 – The St. James’s Club reopens as St James’s Hotel and Club. Every piece of furniture and every metre of fabric – from the Murano glass chandeliers to the walls lined with Loro Piana cashmere – has been carefully selected. A beautiful art collection including fine examples of Impressionist, Expressionist and Cubist work from all over Europe, is displayed in public areas as well as guest rooms.
  • 2009 – The hotel launches its new restaurant Seven Park Place with multi award winning chef William Drabble at its helm. Thanks to William’s exquisite dishes and its impeccable service, this intimate restaurant was awarded a coveted Michelin star only one year after its launch.
  • 2011 – St. James’s Hotel and Club continues the tradition established by their predecessors and today’s celebrities are no less impressed with Samuel L. Jackson, Cher, Luke Wilson, Keith Richards, Alice Cooper, Elle Macpherson, Robert Redford, Dita Von Teese, Colin Salmon, Damian Lewis, Helen McCrory, Michael Bolton, Jack Johnson, Katherine Jenkins and Liza Minnelli having visited the hotel and club recently.
  • 2012 – The team of the St. James’s Hotel and Club was proud to receive the Olympic torch on the day before the opening of the Games; a torch bearing the message of peace, unity and friendship.
  • 2016 – The hotel’s restaurant Seven Park Place by William Drabble, retains its coveted Michelin star in the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland for the seventh time.

DINING
Locally sourced ingredients are a feature of William’s food. Having grown up surrounded by farms William believes it is important to support British farmers and food suppliers.

Each dish starts on a farm or in the sea, it then takes those farmers and fishermen, to get up early in the dark (mostly rainy) mornings to harvest that produce, which is then prepared, carefully packaged, taken on a journey and delivered to the restaurant.

The ingredients are then painstakingly prepared, cooked and presented by a trained team of professionals both in the kitchen and the restaurant. That is how a dish gets to you. There is a lot of time, care, resources and effort involved.

William likes to keep simplicity in his dishes; he believes that if you use too many ingredients at the same time the flavours become confused. This is why he uses the best quality ingredients and lets them speak for themselves.

Local suppliers include Cornvale Foods for game and Lune Valley Lamb; Keltic Sea Fare for scallops and langoustine; Mrs Tee for wild mushrooms; Channel Fisheries for Fish.

William Drabble is the Michelin Star chef at St. James’s Hotel & Club in Mayfair, London that overlooks all of the dining aspects at our 5 Star Hotel in London. Although from Merseyside by birth, William Drabble’s love of food actually began when he was 8 and his family moved to Norfolk.

William Drabble was influenced by his beloved grandmother who was also a cook at Yorkshire’s great estates in the 1930’s while he was also inspired by the quality of ingredients he saw from local farms and suppliers.

William worked in some of England’s most influential Michelin-starred hotels and restaurants before joining St. James’s Hotel and Club as Executive Chef to launch the hotels newly named ‘Seven Park Place’ restaurant on 1st September 2009.

Already working at St. James’s as Food and Beverage Manager was a former colleague, Christophe Thuilot of The Capital Hotel, and together they formed the formidable team that, in January 2011 only a year after joining the hotel, enabled William and ‘Seven Park Place’ to be awarded a coveted Michelin star and four AA Rosettes.

Prior to his role at St. James’s Hotel and Club, Drabble spent over ten years at Aubergine in London’s fashionable Chelsea, gaining a Michelin Star in 1999 and maintaining it each year since then.

William’s career also includes roles as Head Chef at Michael’s Nook Country House Hotel in Grasmere (where he first gained the Michelin star for the venue at the tender age of 26) and Sous Chef to Tom Aikens at Pied à Terre in London (two Michelin stars).

William Drabble currently oversees all aspects of dining at the hotel, including private dining, Afternoon Tea, room service and the hotel’s more informal dining space, William’s Bar and Bistro.

WILLIAM’S BAR & BISTRO
William’s Bar and Bistro at St. James’s Hotel and Club is a reflection of a more casual approach to Drabble’s culinary philosophy. With a thoroughly selected wine and tailored cocktail offering, our guests can experience the same focus of William’s cooking in a more relaxed bistro environment, embracing William’s gastronomic concept.

From 15.00 to 17.00, our Afternoon Tea is served in the same scenario, showcasing William’s expression of the Victorian Period, taking our guests through a historical journey that resembles the era and style of that time gone by.

This modernised Bar & bistro is a perfect place to drink, dine, socialise and truly immerse in a casual dining experience, surrounded by a chic and relaxed atmosphere.

THE AFTERNOON TEA
Afternoon Tea is a classic British tradition and a brilliant way to catch up with friends over some tea and treats. St. James’s Hotel & Club offers a historical Afternoon Tea which is designed by the talented Executive Chef William Drabble who also looks after our Michelin Star Restaurant Seven Park Place as well as William’s Bar & Bistro.

Afternoon Tea at St. James’s Hotel & Club includes luxurious sweet treats, sandwiches and tea or even champagne on request. Make your reservation for afternoon tea at our 5 Star Hotel in Mayfair, London today.

St. James’s Hotel & Club offers a historical Afternoon Tea, designed by Executive Chef William Drabble of in-house Michelin Star Restaurant Seven Park Place. Guests will be transported to Victorian times and taste classic cakes of that period, keeping its originality but with slight modern-day twist.

Afternoon Tea originated in 1840 when Anna Russell, the Duchess of Bedford and great friend of Queen Victoria, complained of a ‘sinking feeling’ and started inviting friends to join her at Woburn Abbey for cakes and tea in the mid-afternoon.

The ritual of Afternoon Tea quickly became established in upper class households and it wasn’t long before Queen Victoria became an advocate of the concept. St. James’s Hotel and Club is keen to capture these traditions and Drabble has created a selection of sweet treats and sandwiches based on authentic recipes and favourites of Queen Victoria.

He was inspired by recipes by the Head Chef at St. James’s Club in the early 1800s, Charles Elmé Francatelli, who then went on to be Chief Cook for Queen Victoria in 1840 and later became the General Manager of St. James’s Club.

The tea features highlights from Victorian times including custard tart and a classic Victoria Sponge Cake, whilst other dishes include Cheshire cheese scones, made with the oldest recorded British cheese, plain scones with jam and clotted cream as well as an array of traditional savoury sandwiches, washed down with a cup of an exclusive fine loose tea blend from The East India Company – created especially for the hotel – or for those in the mood for something fizzy, St. James’s Hotel and Club’s finest Champagne.

EATING-FOR-WELLNESS
After a good night’s sleep, guests can set themselves up perfectly for the day ahead with a deliciously fulfilling wellness breakfast courtesy of Executive Head Chef William Drabble.

Known for his indulgent and sumptuous cooking style, Drabble has developed a culinary journey of a breakfast menu at Michelin-starred restaurant, Seven Park Place, out of a desire to fuel the body rather than ‘detox’.

Created with powerhouse ingredients, such as antioxidant-packed berries, immunity strengthening manuka honey, and nuts, avocado and salmon – all rich in omega-3 fatty acids which are fantastic for brain and heart health – the menu is packed with nutrients, as well as flavour, making it great for the health conscious and the ‘not so bothered’ alike.

This breakfast, served at London’s most intimate Michelin-starred restaurant, is a perfect way to start the day as it satisfies and energises without making you feel bloated or too full.

Hero dishes include oatmeal and cottage cheese pancakes with smoked salmon and avocado, porridge oats soaked in almond milk with mixed berries and nuts, quinoa crumpets with baked banana and coconut yoghurt, and a glowing green smoothie.

Also incorporated into many of the dishes is the ultra-healthy Jeeva King Coconut products. The coconuts used in Jeeva products are King Coconuts from Sri Lanka, which contain less sugar and more calcium than any other strain of coconut.

They have been referred to as the Rolls Royce of coconuts and are very rare. Jeeva King Coconut Water will also be stocked in the mini-bar to coincide with the launch of this wellness experience.
