Stand Up Paddling on Lakes St. Moritz and Sils
Stand up paddling (SUP) on the Engadine lakes is a perfect start to the day. As far as water sports are concerned, the summer days on the Engadine lakes are determined by the wind. When the weather is nice and warm, the Maloja wind blows from midday. This divides the day in half.

The morning half is mostly windless and therefore ideal for stand up paddling. Get up and go straight down to the lake. A short walk of 15 minutes and the guests of the Crystal Hotel are already standing on their boards. Enchanting: a surface as smooth as glass, the first sunbeams and silence on the water.

From midday, when the Maloja wind starts, it gets too rough for paddlers on the water, and it’s better to stow the SUP board away. But those who have enjoyed the morning silence are probably already sipping a coffee somewhere.

The SUP experience on Lake Sils is probably the most impressive. To paddle on the quiet waters of the largest lake in the Grisons, with your eyes fixed on the Piz da la Margna, is a deeply moving sporting experience – being active in harmony with nature.

We recommend the lakeside opposite the road, with the idyllic bays of the Chastè peninsula, the small Chaviolas island and the Isola delta. Don’t forget: as soon as the water begins to ripple, it’s time to go back because these are the unmistakable signs that the Maloja wind is up.

Mountain biking / Powertrail Corviglia
Mountain biking in the St. Moritz region and the Upper Engadine is in a world of its own. There are over 400 kilometres of well-maintained, marked trails – and they promise a first-class riding experience.

Strenuous tours into the high alpine terrain are just as possible as well as family-friendly trails that lead over forest and country tracks. If you like, you can start your tour directly from the front of the Crystal Hotel and master the ascent with your own muscle power.

A bike tour can also begin comfortably with the funicular which takes athletes and equipment up to the top station of Piz Nair at 3056 a.s.l. Here the view is, of course, breathtaking. Sign-posted routes leading down into the valley are varied and offer something for every level.

Should it be a steep descent that requires speed and skill, or quiet biking through gentle hills? Everyone finally arrives down in the valley. Around Corviglia and in the Bernina Valley, spectacular downhill rides and magnificent single trails in beautiful scenery await mountain bikers.

Newcomers in the saddle book a guided bike tour adapted to their needs before they set out on their own. Making a start is what counts. Biking in and around St. Moritz – every kilometre is adventure, pure and simple.

Horse Riding
All happiness on earth lies on the back of horses – a German proverb. Friends of equestrian sports will fall in love with the fantastic riding area of the Engadine with its countless opportunities and will return again and again.

For beginners as well as for advanced horsemen and women there are enough places where you can get into the saddle for short rides, half-day or day tours or even for a guided trekking of several days. In addition, there are introductory courses for children which promote a natural approach to riding.

You want your own horse with you during the holidays? No problem. On the Engadine horse farms you can rent an indoor or outdoor box for your favourite animal and enjoy your leisure time going for daily rides.

In the harmonious surroundings of the Engadine, in the peaceful lake landscape, man and animal strengthen their mutual relationship and understanding.

Kitesurfing on Lake Silvaplana
The unique lake landscape of the Upper Engadine attracts both spectators and water sports enthusiasts to its shores. On Lake Silvaplana, the second largest and wildest of the lakes, colourful kite boards dominate the afternoon scene.

When the famous Maloja wind blows from noon onwards at up to 30 knots, the kite surfers sometimes glide by their hundreds over the lake. A choreography of colourful surf sails that seem to dance against the imposing mountain backdrop.

No sooner had kitesurfing or kiteboarding been invented at the end of the 1990s than this demanding sport conquered the hearts of water sports enthusiasts all over the world. In kitesurfing, the athletes stand on boards that resemble a small surfboard or wakeboard.

They are pulled by a kite. The more experienced the sportsperson, the better they can use the wind with their kite to perform loops and jumps. The almost perfect wind conditions in the middle of our high alpine valley make kitesurfing on Lake Silvaplana a mecca for water- sports enthusiasts from home and abroad.

The absolute highlight for an experienced kitesurfer are the wind strengths that arise during the rather rare weather conditions with a Julier wind, the strongest wind in the Engadine. Once released, it peaks at up to 40 knots over Lake Silvaplana: a moment for surfers to go into raptures and take off to new heights.

Ovaverva Indoor Pool, Spa and Sports Centre
St. Moritz owes its beginnings to its mineral springs. Already in the Middle Ages spa guests visited the high alpine mountain village. The famous physician Paracelsus praised the wonderful healing power of the St. Moritz water.

Towards the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, cures were popular among the elite, and places like St. Moritz developed rapidly, transforming them from modest mountain villages to sophisticated spa resorts that knew how to respond to the wishes of their discerning clientele.

The municipality of St. Moritz adopted the historical concept of health-promoting water when building the new indoor swimming pool and adapted it to the needs of today’s guests.

The result is not only a facility with swimming and diving pools, children’s and fun area, but also a complete sports and leisure centre with its additional spaces for wellness, gastronomy, outdoor activities and shops.

At the OVAVERVA Indoor Pool, Spa & Sports Centre St. Moritz, guests enjoy precious, healing water in its two aggregate states all year round – in the indoor pool where you can swim, dive, splash and slide, or in the sauna area, inhaling steam and relaxing.

Sailing on Lake St. Moritz
Sailing enthusiasts feel a thrill when the Maloja wind blows. In the summer months it regularly starts at midday and sweeps down valley across Lake St. Moritz. It provides for a first-class sailing experience in the midst of the sublime natural scenery.

And you don’t have to bring your own boat to the Engadine – the St. Moritz Sailing Club, founded as early as 1941, has a wide range of boats that can be hired by the hour, day or week.

After a short 15-minute walk our hotel guests have arrived at the sailing club’s idyllically located boathouse, where they can choose a suitable boat and hoist their sails. Life jackets are provided and wetsuits can be rented.

At the St. Moritz Sailing Club, both beginners and experienced sailors get their money’s worth. The next generation can also have their fun: special children’s boats give them the chance to experience the beauty of sailing.

Furthermore, the club on Lake St. Moritz offers practical training and theory lessons for beginners and advanced sailors on various boat types (Blu26, First Class 7). You will find all the information about sail training and exam preparation on the club’s website.

The Sailing Club also has the only restaurant in St. Moritz located directly on the lake shore. Before and after the trip, Pier 34 is the ideal place to get in the mood for the day or to reminisce about the hours spent on the lake.

Golf
Activity, fresh air and a unique round of 9-holes right on your doorstep: golfers spend their days on the Kulmpark course. This golf course not only scores on tradition and history – its location in the Engadine mountain scenery is a bonus in itself.

The St. Moritz Golf Club was founded over 125 years ago and its first course was established in Kulmpark. Along with the grand hotels and their international clientele, golf also came to the remote Engadine mountain valley.

In cooperation with the St. Moritz golf architect, Mario Verdieri, the Hotel Kulm has redesigned the historic course of the Kulmpark. The result is a new 9-hole course, one of the highest in Europe.

It impresses through variety and rhythm which thoughtfully combine alpine landscape and high-tech golf architecture. Golf enthusiasts push their golf trolley to the next tee with a unique backdrop scenery of 3000-metre-high Engadine peaks and enjoy the sporting activity in harmony with nature.

Golf is known for strengthening muscles, the mind and the immune system. What at first glance looks like a leisurely walk for many people is, in reality, quite a challenge: just one correctly executed stroke moves 124 of our total of 434 muscles… After so much activity, the day can be rounded off with one or two drinks at the bar of the nearby Hotel Kulm.

Hiking
If you want, you can start from right outside the hotel entrance. Yellow signs, the typical Swiss mountain and hiking-trail markings, point the way.

In addition to the destination, the signs also usually indicate the average hiking time. This makes hiking easy and also encourages spontaneous tours. Here are three of our favourite routes to whet your appetite for more:

Easy hike around Lake St. Moritz
From the hotel, stroll through the busy centre of St. Moritz directly to the lake. Here, follow the path along the shore. You can walk around the whole lake and enjoy the view of St. Moritz. Duration: about 1.5 hours walking time from the hotel.

Panorama trail from the Muottas Muragl (top station) to the Pontresina chairlift (top station)
The Panorama Trail from the top station of the picturesque Muottas Muragl funicular to the top station of the Pontresina chairlift rewards hikers with a magnificent view.

The trail leads past old pine forests and ends with a short climb to Alp Languard. Halfway up, the cosy mountain restaurant “Unterer Schafberg” invites walkers to take a break. Duration: approx. 2 hours hiking time.

Piz Nair – Corviglia – Chantarella
The mountain railway takes you up to the St. Moritz local mountain, the Piz Nair. Once there, the first thing to do is to enjoy the Engadine lake landscape and to view the planned hike from above. And off we go.

The first section leads steeply down along the slope of Piz Nair to Munt da San Murezzan. It is followed by a relatively flat, wide path leading to the Alpina Hut. From there it is a steep hike down to Corviglia.

After passing under the Corviglia cable car line a wide curve takes you to Chantarella. Duration: about 2.5 hours hiking time

Muottas Muragl
A vantage point that makes a lasting impression – and it’s so easy to reach without effort. From the valley station at 1738 metres a.s.l., the funicular, built in 1907, takes you up to Muottas Muragl at 2456 metres in the shortest possible time.

Once at the top, the view is simply stunning. St. Moritz and the Upper Engadine lake plateau are literally at your feet. It’s easy to understand why the famous artist Giovanni Segantini, who could paint the light and the landscape of the Engadine like no other, was inspired by this view.

Sure-footed admirers of the artist climb up a well-signposted track to Segantini’s last home, the Segantini Hut. Here, at 2731 metres a.s.l., with the magnificent panorama stretching out around you, the painter’s intention can be perfectly understood.

The Muottas Muragl mountain station is also the starting point for a variety of shorter or longer tours, during which, with a bit of luck, you can see ibex and marmots in summer. Or you can take a seat on the sun terrace of the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl, ideally located right next to the mountain station.

From here it is also worth exploring the “Senda d’Inspiraziun”. On the inspiring circular path you will encounter a number of contemporary works of art. Whether in summer or winter – the mountain like no other will create some very special memories for you.

Glacier & Bernina Express
Two outstanding historic railway lines of the Rhaetian Railway are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing a railway and nature experience of a special kind.

On both of the routes, the trains feature special panorama coaches which provide a fantastic view of rugged nature, glaciers and the grandiose construction of viaducts and tunnels.

The Glacier Express travels the route between the two glamorous mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz. It takes around eight hours to complete the entire journey.

The absolute highlights of this train ride are the passage over the Oberalp Pass at an altitude of 2033 metres, the crossing of the Rhine Gorge, the “Grand Canyon of Switzerland”, the approach to St. Moritz with its lake landscape or the arrival in Zermatt with a view of the Matterhorn.

The Bernina Express runs from Chur to Tirano in Italy. This journey also promises a unique railway experience. The Bernina Express crosses the Alps, passes imposing glaciers until its journey ends under palm trees in the south.

From St. Moritz, which lies at the midpoint of the line, you can board a train to go in either direction. The railway line through the Albula Valley and over the Bernina Pass is a masterpiece of engineering.

Testimonies to the time of the railway pioneers are the Landwasser viaduct, the helical tunnels between Bergün and Preda or the circular viaduct at Brusio.

The absolute highlight for railway fans is a combined two-day panoramic tour on the Bernina and Glacier Express. The Rhaetian Railway will be happy to make you an offer for this from your point of departure, including overnight accommodation. Both railway lines are open all year round.

Swimming in Lej da Staz
On a hot summer’s day in the Engadine, the glistening lakes entice you to cool off and swim. They are inviting with their crystal-clear, pure waters fed by the mountain springs and streams. But beware, the rather deep lakes heat up to hardly more than 17 degrees even in summer.

Brrrrr… just quickly out of the water again. Luckily there are alternatives. Smaller high-moor lakes, which are relatively shallow and heat up in the sunshine. Although situated high up, the dark-moor lakes reach temperatures of about 20 degrees.

Of all the Engadine moor lakes, Lej da Staz is the most famous. In the middle of the extensive Stazerwald forest, between the two resorts of St. Moritz and Pontresina, the lake lies idyllically embedded in a wide clearing.

A place for summertime “dolce far niente”, complete with bath towel and barbecue. A beach and two wooden piers give easy access to the moor water – it is a very popular spot.

The nearby Hotel Restorant Lej da Staz also invites you to stay in the area. Lej March near St. Moritz and Lej Nair near Silvaplana are other pleasant, small bathing lakes.

Corviglia Snowpark  “Crowland”
“Crowland”, the Corviglia Snowpark, is a real paradise for snowboarders and free skiers, located right next to the Corviglia mountain station and stretching down to Marguns. A lot of fun and action is guaranteed here, whether it’s jibbing or cool jumps.

The snowpark offers various kickers, lots of rails and boxes in all sizes and much more. The park adventure is aimed at all levels and impresses with its class and the different features it has to offer. Beginners feel comfortable in the Easy Park, perfect for their first attempts on the board.

Just try it out and have fun. The Fun Slope, a special 600-meter fun slope is a combination of snow park and classic ski slope and provides some fast turns.

In the Blue Line, improving one’s skills is made easy, and experts who like to give it their all will have fun in the Medium Line on over 400 meters – here they can take their riding to the next level and let off steam. In short, the snowpark is the perfect environment to test and improve your individual freestyle skills.

The snowpark is open from mid-December to the beginning of April (depending on snow conditions). “Crowland” is one of the best snow parks in Switzerland and repeatedly gets top marks.

Ski Touring
The region of Graubünden and the Engadine with its magnificent mountain scenery is ideal for ski tours. What a pleasure to climb a mountain or a hill through the quiet snow landscape using your own strength, off the beaten track of mass tourism.

Early in the morning with the first rays of sunshine, strap on your skis and off you go. Beginners, inexperienced ski touring fans and those who are not familiar with the terrain are best advised to book a guided tour with a professional mountain guide who is familiar with the area. We recommend the following tours:

Piz San Gian, from St. Moritz
Challenging, wonderful ski tour on the north side of the Rosatschkamm – only in safe weather and snow conditions. Duration approx. 4 hours. Mainly on the north side, therefore mostly out of the sun, but always with a magnificent view.

Starting point is the parking lot in front of the Hotel Kempinski in St. Moritz. From the Crystal Hotel it takes 5 minutes by car and 10 minutes by public transport.

To the Corn Suvretta
Easy ski tour which takes about 3.5 hours and involves almost 800 meters of altitude difference. With fantastic views of the surrounding mountains.

Starting and finishing point of the tour is the parking lot of the Alp Giüglia on the Julierpass road. From the Crystal Hotel it takes 13 minutes by car and 20 minutes by public transport.St.

Cross-country skiing
In winter, when the cross-country ski tracks stretch out endlessly into the distance, the Engadine is the undisputed dream destination for all fans of this sport thanks to guaranteed snow and impeccably-maintained tracks.

In the Engadine high valley and its picturesque side valleys, cross-country skiing is part of the winter sports culture. After all, it is one of the best full-body training methods – and it is conducted in the fresh air in the most beautiful landscape.

Skiers can use the entire network of more than 200 kilometres of perfectly groomed cross-country trails, starting anywhere and anytime. Ambitious skiers will not miss the chance to tackle Switzerland’s most famous 42 Marathon kilometres or to train on the St. Moritz race track.

Those who are looking for more peace and quiet will find their favourite track and silence in one of the side valleys. Conclusion: The Engadine is a cross-country skiing paradise in a class of its own. Two cross-country trails among many which we recommend:

From St. Moritz to Maloja
On this part of the Engadine Ski Marathon the tracks lead mostly across the frozen waters of the Engadine lake plateau.

Cross-country skiers glide along this flat, straight stretch through the wonderful expanse of the high valley and let themselves be enchanted by the scenery. An incomparable sporting experience, which can of course also be completed in individual stages.

Night cross-country skiing St. Moritz Bad
Those who like to venture out on cross-country skis after nightfall will take their chance on the floodlit night trail in St. Moritz Bad.

Laid out for classic and skating, the cross-country track entails a total altitude difference of 116 metres on over 6.1 kilometres of track and guarantees good fun under a starry sky. The night trail is popular with both beginners and athletes – simply everyone who wants to spend all their energy before going to sleep.

Engadin Ski Marathon – the Engadiner
As the second largest cross-country skiing event in the world, the Engadin Ski Marathon is a sporting event in a class of its own. The marathon has been held regularly in the Upper Engadine on the 2nd Sunday in March since 1969.

Only twice in the long history of the marathon has the event had to be cancelled at short notice. Every year more than 14,000 contestants from over 60 nations cover the 42-km-long “Engadiner” and rave about the uniqueness of this sporting event.

The marathon starts in Maloja and passes St. Moritz at kilometre 15. After 42 kilometres, the participants reach the finish in S-chanf. Those who register for the half distance, the half marathon, drop out of the race at kilometre 21 in Pontresina.

Every cross-country enthusiast will find his or her own personal challenge in the ski marathon, the women’s race or the night run. The St. Moritz Supersprint which promises concentrated sprinting action over the short distance of 100 meters will be held as part of the marathon week from 2021.

Here the fastest sprinter of the marathon week will be discovered. The illuminated 100-metre course ends in a covered finish area with stands, a restaurant and music.

This new, attractive format is aimed at spectators, who have free access to the area. The qualifying runs start at 16.00 hrs, the final runs at 18.00 hrs. Generous prize money awaits the winners.

White Turf – International horse racing
The White Turf St. Moritz meet has been held in the high-alpine valley since 1907. Always on the first three weekends in February, the frozen Lake St. Moritz turns into a racecourse for a series of spectacular horse races featuring international professional jockeys.

On this unique race track, under the radiant blue Engadine winter sky, the jockeys drive their noble thoroughbreds in fast gallops and trotting races over the snow on the frozen surface of the lake. The undisputed highlight is “skijöring”.

In this exclusive racing event, contestants are pulled on their skis by a bareback horse at speeds of up to 50 km/h over a 2700m long race track. Whoever takes part in this race needs a good portion of strength, courage and endurance.

While the jockeys gallop their horses over the racetrack, the international crowd of guests, including high society and celebrities, plus the local spectators enjoy all kinds of culinary delights in the much-celebrated champagne climate of St. Moritz.

A specially erected tent city with live music, restaurants, bars and shopping facilities provides the right ambience. Yes, White Turf on the frozen St. Moritz Lake is definitely the legendary highlight of the St. Moritz Winter Season: a top event and another exclusivity that makes St. Moritz so unique.

Snow Polo World Cup
For three days at the end of January, the frozen Lake St. Moritz is the venue for the Snow Polo World Cup. Against the spectacular mountain backdrop, the lake becomes the arena for the world’s highest tournament, the only one to be held on snow.

In order to keep the horses safe on snow and ice and at this furious pace, they are protected with specially-made hoof shoes. The event was initiated in 1985 and has enjoyed increasing popularity ever since.

During the three days of the Snow Polo World Cup, four international world-class polo teams compete against each other for the cup title. The final match is played on Sunday and the winning team honoured, but prizes are also awarded for the best player and the best polo horse.

The polo tournament is one of the most important social events in St. Moritz and is accompanied by black-tie cocktail receptions, dinners and glittering parties.

Those who cherish an exclusive setting can follow the spectacle from the specially-built grandstand and be spoilt by the chefs of the first-class hotels. On the weekend of the Snow Polo World Cup, the much-celebrated champagne climate of St. Moritz makes the glasses of the visitor parties ring.

Casino St. Moritz
At 1850 meters above sea level, the air is already a bit thinner but in any case still good enough to try an evening game of roulette or blackjack. Whether you are a passionate gambler or simply hoping to get lucky – at the Casino St. Moritz everyone gets their money’s worth and enjoys hours of entertainment.

A whole range of table and card games are on offer as well as around 82 gaming machines and electronic roulette. Friends of table games can choose between American Roulette, Black Jack, Ultimated Texas Hold’em Poker and Punto Banco.

The casino also organizes regular poker tournaments which enjoy great popularity. And there is the casino bar. Is there a better place to celebrate with your friends in a relaxed atmosphere and to toast a win? Among night owls and gamblers, the bar is especially well-known for its selection of fine whiskies.

For guests who prefer a more personal atmosphere, there is the VIP Wooden Club. Behind frosted panes of glass, protected from prying eyes, it is the ideal place for players who want to play in seclusion and yet appreciate the atmosphere of the bustling main hall.

The casino also offers personalized packages and various gift options. Always under the motto: Play, Fun, Excitement.

Giovanni Segantini Museum
An entire museum in St. Moritz is dedicated to Giovanni Segantini – the painter who died early in 1899 at the age of just 41. The painter spent the last years of his life in the Engadine and during this time created a series of works that captured the light of the Engadine in an unprecedented way.

This is why Segantini is often called the painter of light. The museum with its mighty dome was built in 1908 by the architect Nicolaus Hartmann. It was renovated for the 100th anniversary of the artist’s death.

To this day, the museum houses the largest collection of works by Giovanni Segantini, which are made accessible to an art-loving public in regular exhibitions.

Born in 1858 in Arco in Tyrol, which at the time belonged to the Austrian Empire, Segantini initially lived with his family in Savognin, Switzerland, and moved to Bregaglia in 1894. He spent the summers of his last years in Maloja and the winters in Soglio.

During these years he painted the famous “Alpine Triptych”, which consists of the three large pictures “Becoming – Being – Passing away”. The backgrounds of the paintings depict the Alpine landscapes of Soglio, the twilight seen from the Schafberg in the Engadine and the winter landscape of Maloja.

Giovanni Segantini was already famous as a landscape painter during his lifetime, regarded by many as a great innovator of Alpine painting. But Segantini himself also appreciated another artistic genre, namely the portrait.

In addition to landscapes, he created a series of touching portraits. His life story was made into a film under the title: “Giovanni Segantini – Magic of Light”.

Shopping in Via Serlas and the town centre
Small is beautiful… the Via Serlas shopping street in St. Moritz proudly competes with the largest shopping parades in the world. All the brands renowned in the fashion industry are lined up here.

There are some who call the Via Serlas the world’s shortest luxury mile or the “Via Serlas Club” and they have a point. The offer is as international as the well-heeled clientele that populates the many hotels and private holiday homes during the high season.

Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Jimmy Cho, Miu Miu, Roberto Cavalli, Ermenegildo Zegna – the list can be extended at will – they are all represented with their own shops in the Engadine high valley, alongside the big names of the jewellery industry such as Harry Winston or Cartier.

And right in the middle of it all is the world-famous luxury hotel Badrutt’s Palace in whose bar tired shopping queens and kings can fortify themselves for their next discoveries. During the Advent Season, Via Serlas looks at its best and surprises with atmospheric Christmas illuminations every year.

In the immediate vicinity of the Via Serlas and in the centre of St. Moritz there are other small, inviting shops offering stylish furniture, selected wines, caviar or rare teas and local specialities.

And nobody should miss the opportunity – not even the calorie counters – to try a piece of the home-made Engadine nut cake with chocolate coating at Confiserie Hauser. A culinary delight that satisfies all the senses.
