CORNWALL
The Rosevine is a wonderfully convenient base for short breaks and family holidays in Cornwall, within easy distance of Portscatho, St Mawes and Truro. For holiday activities, walks and beaches, head to the Roseland Peninsula, one of the prettiest and most exclusive parts of Cornwall.

We are in the very heart of it, and the house has a fabulous sea view, looking directly over Gerrans Bay towards Portscatho. The safe sandy beach is just a two-minute stroll down the lane. The National Trust owns Porthcurnick beach, and its calm waters are perfect for water sports, swimming and rock pooling.

There’s a lot for families and couples alike to explore, from beautiful beaches and hidden coves to riverside creeks.

The best way to travel is by boat, so take a ferry tour down the beautiful Fal River, or hop on the passenger ferry for a short boat ride from the Roseland Peninsula over to Falmouth, to visit the National Maritime Museum Cornwall or Pendennis Castle.

Wander around the boutiques in St Mawes, visit St Mawes Castle, and The King Harry Ferry is a picturesque way to cross the river over to the National Trust’s Trelissick Gardens, and on to Truro with its stunning cathedral, and family-friendly Royal Cornwall Museum.

The sheltered coastal village of Portscatho is an easy walk along the coastal footpath and we are a stone’s throw from some of the best sailing waters in the UK.

If you’d like to go slightly further afield, the iconic Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are around 45 minutes away by car, whilst the North Coast surf beaches are under an hour away.

Some of the best foodie destinations are located in Cornwall, some just on the doorstep of The Rosevine. As well to our own restaurant, there’s the Hidden Hut located just above Porthcurnick Beach, accessed by the footpath, for soups and sandwiches as well as their acclaimed feast nights, and the Michelin starred Driftwood restaurant is just up the road.

A PERFECT SUMMER DAY
Most days you will want to spend on the beach, dosing up on essential vitamin D, sea air and ice cream! There are so many jaw dropping spots to spend lazy days on the beach, The Roseland have ample and there is no need to go far before you stumble onto sand! (The nearest from The Rosevine is just a few hundred yards).

If you want to brush up on surfing head to the north coast for the larger waves and hire shops a plenty. (We recommend Porthtowan, a great beach for safe surfing and a secret sea pool accessible at low tide – See Tris Surf Shop for board and suit hire), for canoeing, swimming, sailing and paddle boarding the South Coast is ideal.

Porthcurnick Beach is just a stone’s throw from the hotel and is clear, calm and one of the most beautiful on the Peninsula.

Feeling lazy and want a break from sunbathing and paddling at Porthcurnick? Head back to the garden to enjoy a leisurely lunch with chilled white wine and a side order of garden games. Grab a book or newspaper from the lounge and head back to the beach for an afternoon of relaxation.

We are not all that far from the end of England here on The Roseland Peninsula and it is a fantastic area to discover while you are staying nearby.

Channel your inner Poldark or Demelza and take a day trip west towards Land’s End, en route you will discover mining heritage sites, the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum, St Michael’s Mount and the Minack Theatre, both of which need to be seen to be believed.

Also, worthy of a stop is the very impressive and recently refurbished art deco lido in Penzance. This incredible sea water pool is rather impressive and a very safe and family friendly place to enjoy a dip.

Land’s End itself is worth a trip at least once, with its family attractions and spectacular coastal walks, however if you are looking for something a little less energetic, take one of the very popular vineyard tours at Polgoon vineyard.

A PERFECT AUTUMNAL DAY

Staying in Cornwall gives you access to one of our great assets, the South West Coast Path. You are never very far from it, especially when staying at The Rosevine, it is literally at the end of the lane.

There are many different walks for varying abilities in the local area, and are a fabulous way of taking in the local attractions, scenery, plant life and sea life.

Pack a picnic, which you can book in advance with our reception team, don walking shoes and head out to explore. What’s more, many of the beaches accessed via the coastal paths are dog friendly, our closest beach, Porthcurnick is open to dogs all year round.

Take the path alongside Porthcurnick Beach heading towards the pretty fishing village of Portscatho and then follow taking in sites such as the St Anthony Lighthouse, spectacular views of Falmouth, Pendennis Castle and its world famous harbour, St Mawes Castle, down to Place House, a replica French Chateau, and enjoy amazing clifftop views and unspoilt beaches. Pick up a map from the House – we have plenty!

Alternatively, the county is much quieter at this time of year and so heading to our top attractions in autumn means less crowds. The Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan are about a half an hour drive from The Rosevine, with their world famous flora and fauna.

St Ives is a little further west but is well worth it. Famed for its art, visit galleries and museums galore! Notably, the Tate St Ives spectacularly situated overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden.

Back at the house, enjoy a relaxing swim in the indoor pool, head back to your Studio, Suite or Apartment for a refreshing cup of tea, or something stronger from the bar, whilst enjoying the mesmerising views across the Bay, then a delicious dinner in the restaurant.

A PERFECT WINTER DAY

Escape normality and take the winding road from daily life to Cornwall-life. Pull up in the car park and breathe in the fresh sea air, then after a good night’s sleep wake up to the stunning view out of your French window – even in winter Gerrans Bay is awe-inspiring.

Fill up with a hearty breakfast and head to one of the local towns or villages for a bit of Christmas shopping, you can never start too early! St Mawes has some lovely boutiques, Onda, St Mawes Pottery and Grace & Favour, or head to nearby Falmouth or Truro for a great selection of independent as well as high street shops.

Recommendations include Cream of Cornwall in Falmouth and The Clementine in Truro. Check out our festive package here, you may catch the Truro City of Lights midwinter festival on 22nd November, a parade of over 600 lanterns made by local artists, schools and groups, followed by the Christmas lights switch on.

Or, visit one of the beautiful harbour villages like Mousehole near Penzance or Padstow for a magical evening of mulled wine, carols and Christmas lights that even extend out into the harbour.

You may even like to catch a show in the evening, the Hall For Cornwall in Truro features local touring companies, try KneeHigh’s production of The Tin Drum, or a classic, Sleeping Beauty for family friendly fun.

Or have a quiet night in with a good book and a glass of red, we have lots of novels to choose from including some by local authors. Post-Christmas, there’s always a good excuse to head to the seaside and work off the food and alcohol consumed over the festive period!

No need for gym equipment here, simply bring walking boots and some waterproofs and head off on a salty, sea air adventure.

Cornwall is also a spectacular place to watch storms rolling in, head to Porthleven or Penzance as you head west, and Sennen Cove, Botallack, Pendeen Watch and Cape Cornwall are some of the best spots on the North Coast.

A PERFECT SPRING DAY
There is so much to do on our doorstep that it is hard to choose some top picks, however a perfect spring day residing on the Roseland would include; waking up with the early morning sunshine, strolling to the beach (Porthcurnick is just a few hundred yards down the lane) for a post breakfast dose of salty sea air accompanied by a hot coffee and perhaps a camera to capture the peaceful and perfect start to the day.

Back for breakfast enjoyed overlooking the sea before packing up the family and friends into the car and ‘commuting’ to nearby Falmouth on the Fal River ferry. Enjoy group paddle boarding lessons (Try WESUP for lessons, hire and trips) to enjoy the Cornish coast from a completely different angle.

Once warm and dry stroll into the harbour town to enjoy excellent coffee (Our top pick is Espressini) an exhibition at the fantastic Maritime Museum or simply stroll the streets and enjoy the boutiques and boat views from the many piers.

Once you have built up an appetite, time to head to Argal Lake on the outskirts of town. There you will find plenty of picnic areas and vistas to enjoy an al fresco lunch. (Ask staff for details on our picnic hampers).

After lunch enjoy a walk around the circumference of the lake not missing the chance to walk over the dam or enjoy the play area for those with a little bit more energy!

If the sun is still shining high a couple of late afternoon options enroute back to The Rosevine include, taking in the beautiful bluebells at Enys Gardens in nearby Penryn. Cornwall is renowned for its breath-taking bluebell fields and April/May is the best time to enjoy.

Another option is to drive to Truro and enjoy a walk around Malpas park. This is a popular recreation site for many locals including a play area, running track, cricket pitch, football fields, waterside walk and a couple of pubs along the way!

Malpas is a wonderful place to enjoy an early evening stroll with a pint of local ale and a packet of crisps overlooking the estuary.

There are also many Great Gardens of Cornwall, fabulous places at this time of year to learn about the Plant Hunters that make Cornwall’s gardens so special. The closest to The Rosevine are Trelissick, Trewithen, Caerhays and Lamorran.

The best way to end the day? Food! Asparagus, fresh fish or of course spring lamb; the seasonal sensations rustled up by our house kitchen never fail to delight. Take your time and indulge in good food, good wine and relax.

You must try a Cornish G&T for a pre-or post-dinner aperitif, we stock at least 5 varieties of gin at our bar however our favourite is Tarquins Gin made on the North Coast. Cheers!
