The Auberge du Vieux-Port is a home-away-from-home in the heart of Old Montreal. We’ve transformed two 19th-century warehouses into a charming boutique hotel featuring 45 classic, intimate rooms, most with historic views of St. Paul Street or the St. Lawrence River.

We pride ourselves on providing warm, personalized service, creating an authentic, one-of-a-kind Old Montreal experience.

Our History
The Auberge du Vieux-Port is the modern-day embodiment of 19th-century Montreal, with a delicate architectural balance between preservation and innovation. It is housed in two historic buildings: the Hector Lamontagne Heritage Building and the Victor-Hudon Building.

Victor Hudon Building
In 1857, Victor Hudon constructed a building between St. Paul Street and rue de la Commune. Over the next 40 years, the building was used by an array of merchants, including a a flour trader and a dry goods merchant.

In the early 1900s, the building was briefly used by a wholesaler of saddlery, then was dedicated to wholesale shoe trade until the early 1920s.

From 1939 to 1968, the building was used by Potato Distributors Ltd. for wholesale and warehouse space. In the late 1960s it shifted focus once again, and was home to a Quebec furniture company until 2005.

Hector Lamontagne Building
In 1882, leather merchant Simeon Delorme built a warehouse next door to the Victor Hudon Building.

Over the next few decades, two businesses operated out of the warehouse: the Lamalice Brothers (wholesale merchants of fabrics and dry goods) and Narcisse Quintal et Fils (food wholesalers specializing in wine and liquor).

In April 1907, a fire ravaged the interior of the warehouse, forcing the closure of the Quintal family business. In subsequent years, the property was used to store war materials for the Canadian army.

In 1919, Hector Lamontagne, a leather goods merchant and manufacturer, acquired the property, using it as a warehouse and storefront. In the mid-1940s, they expanded their operations to the adjoining building.

Their commercial and manufacturing activities continued for another 50 years, and the company closed down their operations in 1989.

Transformation to the Auberge du Vieux-Port
In 1994, the Antonopoulos Group acquires the Hector-Lamontagne building and in 1996 transforms it into Auberge du Vieux-Port with 27 rooms. In 2012, the Group purchases the Victor Hudon building and expands the hotel into 45 rooms.

The rooms feature spectacular views, some looking out at Montreal’s magnificent Old Port, and others overlooking the cobblestones of historic St. Paul Street. We’re proud that the hotel has been awarded the Prix du Jury for the quality of its interior design in the Commerce Design Montreal competition.

At Taverne Gaspar, we offer an array of refined, pub-inspired delicacies, along with quality spirits and cocktails (plus we have an excellent bourbon selection).

Located in a former warehouse dating back to the 19th century, the Taverne largely preserves its authentic décor, while maintaining an atmosphere of warmth and conviviality.

We also have great indie, folk, blues and rock nights! In the summer, the restaurant opens onto a large terrace overlooking the port – it’s a great place for group gatherings.

The ideal space to create a large array of events, Taverne Gaspar allows a feeling of authenticity and charm in a room where history abounds

COME EXPLORE OUR FAVORITE OLD MONTREAL ATTRACTIONS
We’re proud to be part of Old Montreal, the oldest part of the city. It’s an area of contrasts, with historic fixtures like the Notre-Dame Basilica and the Bonsecours Market, along with amazing, contemporary restaurants, outdoor activities and galleries.

We’ve put together some of our recommendations for the top places to visit while you’re in Old Montreal. And if you need more ideas, please feel free to ask us – we love letting people know about our favourite part of the world.

Landmarks
We never get tired of Old Montreal’s architecture; it’s so breathtaking, and gives a wonderful glimpse into the history of this region.

There’s too many to cover here, but Notre-Dame Basilica is a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture, while Bonsecours Market (in existence since 1847) is a great place for made-in-Canada crafts. Then, step back in time on Saint Paul Street.

A must-visit is the Pointe-à-Callière: it has an underground circuit that leads through archaeological excavations, including Indigenous settlements. And there are stunning views from the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel

City Tours
Not to be banal, but a classic tour of Old Montreal might be the best way to get a feel for this city. For our active guests, we recommend a bike tour, as it allows you to venture further into the city.

Being wine and cheese lovers, we also love this tour of Quebec’s wine country. But if you want to see the nearby area, take a walking tour. Wander through the streets and take a note of sights that you would like to come back to and learn more about.

Outdoor Recreation
If you’re here in the summer, we recommend renting a scooter! It’s a really fun way of getting around. There are also some great hiking trails close by; our favourites are Dieppe Trail and the Gorge Canyon Trail (it’s got the longest suspended footbridge in North America).

In the winters, there’s tons to do. Our top picks: outdoor ice skating at Bonsecours Basin, ice fishing at Pêche Blanche, or, for electronic music fans, the infamous Igloo Fest.

Shops & Galleries
Just walk out the door and there are lots of shops and galleries on St. Paul Street: we love the locally made items at Boutique métiers d’art du Québec. There are also gorgeous finds at Pepin Shop; for fashion, we love Ssense.

And for a real treat, head further up to Bonsecour Market, which has well over a dozen boutiques with truly unique items. As for galleries, check out the changing exhibitions at DHC/ART Fondation pour l’art contemporain.

Fondation pour l’art contemporain. We also recommend the Galerie d’art Blanche for its exhibits of up-and-coming Montreal artists, and the Galerie LeRoyer for its showings of local and international art.

Local Dining
We have so many amazing restaurants in Old Montreal, besides our own highly-rated Taverne Gaspar and Terrasse Sur L’Auberge (with amazing views of the city). Our favourites?

Check out Brasserie 701 (classic French bistro), Terrasse Place d’Armes (another great spot to enjoy views of Old Montreal), Le Club Chasse et Pêche (fish and game), Modavie (dinner jazz), Barroco (European cuisine), DaEmma (Italian), Kyo (Japanese), Garde Manger (seafood) and Café Olimpico (coffee).
