Blantyre Country Estate, a proud member of Relais & Châteaux, is an award-winning, luxury resort featuring Café Boulud at Blantyre showcasing Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud’s lauded cuisine.

Guests will enjoy timeless gilded-age elegance, luxurious guest accommodations, a relaxing spa, as well as activities including tennis, hiking, croquet and much more.

A Tudor-style mansion and estate built in 1902, Blantyre is resplendent with modern furnishings with traditional finishes, fireplaces, sumptuous fabrics and fresh flowers. This elegant destination is set amidst 110 acres of lush lawns and woodlands in the beautiful Berkshires of western Massachusetts.

Blantyre is a relaxing retreat with a professional, caring and friendly staff. A getaway for all seasons, Blantyre offers seasonal Berkshire activities and transforms through the year to become a fall foliage destination, a summer retreat, and a winter wonderland.

We offer memorable events all year long, from Christmas tree lighting to lobster picnics on The Lawn to festive, glittering New Year’s Eve parties.

Café Boulud at Blantyre marks the debut of Chef Boulud’s cuisine in the Berkshires. His culinary team oversees the resort’s dining operation, including the Dom Perignon Salon, in-room dining, and weddings and events.

The specialty culinary offerings are enhanced by an award-winning wine cellar boasting nearly 8,000 bottles.

History, Heritage, & Today
Robert Paterson was introduced to the Lenox, MA area in the late 1890s by his friend John Sloan (of W&J Sloane). Lenox already had many great estates even before Blantyre, prompting the area to be known as “the queen of inland resorts” or, as Cleveland Amory wrote, “the Switzerland of America.”

Paterson acquired the Lenox estate of 220 acres called “Highlawn” from the Dorr family. He tore down the modest house, keeping the outbuildings. Hence, the Carriage House Stables and The Retreat at Blantyre date from the late 19th century.

He set about building a property on a grand scale, although the initial plans were purported to be drawn on the back of an envelope by the architect, Robert Henderson Robertson.

Robert Paterson’s concept was for no less than a castle of “feudal architectural features,” replete with towers, turrets, and gargoyles. The house was modeled after his mother’s ancestral home in Blantyre, Scotland. Construction began in 1901, at times employing over 300 people on the grounds and buildings.

The Manor House was furnished in English style with all furniture brought in from England. The family used the house during summer and fall seasons and entertained frequently, as was the fashion in those days.

There were garden parties with musicians imported from New York and grand dinner-dances with each party becoming more and more lavish, befitting the “Gilded Age.”

When the end of the era came some 15 to 20 years later, hastened by the introduction of the income tax, so, too, ended a lifestyle that was never to be repeated. Over the next 60 years, Blantyre went through several transitions, including a particularly destructive period in the 1970s.

In 1980, Jack and Jane Fitzpatrick fell in love with the abandoned Blantyre and organized to purchase it for their daughter, Ann Fitzpatrick Brown, who became the eighth owner. Determined to restore it to its former elegance, Ann reopened Blantyre in 1981, after extensive renovation.

Blantyre achieved the vision of the Fitzpatricks – a beautiful country house, recognized as one of the finest hotels in the world, where guests can come and stay and experience the life and service of a bygone era.

Beginning in 2000, Ann and the staff of Blantyre planned and worked toward fully winterizing Blantyre. In May 2005, Blantyre opened its doors for the first time in 25 years as a year-round operation, with The Retreat, Blantyre’s cozy and intimate spa.

After Fitzpatrick Brown’s passing in 2016, the property was purchased by Linda Law, a veteran real estate investor, who discovered the Berkshires as a student and had Blantyre on her bucket list for more than three decades.

Ms. Law decided that the beloved Manor deserved a twenty-first-century upgrade, with a bow to the old and a nod to the new, bringing this Berkshires getaway resort into a new age of Gilded Grandeur.

The Manor House
Steeped in a rich, gilded age history, the 1902 Manor House is a welcoming example of Tudor, Jacobean and Scottish influences. Original leaded glass windows, richly burnished woods and spectacular Murano chandeliers culminate in a luxurious, baronial respite.

A fusion of eclectic antique and transitional furnishings, treasured heirlooms and period art set the stage for grand entertaining throughout the public rooms.

Atop the grand staircase, eight gracious guest rooms, many with fireplaces and period details, offer houseguests the opportunity to step back into a gentler time of elegance and romance, while pampered with modern conveniences.

Each Manor House room boasts a unique character, Matouk linens, Molton Brown Bath Products, distinctive welcome amenities and modern comforts such as wi-fi and large screen televisions. Please note, due to the historic nature of the estate, there is not an elevator between floors.

Master Suite Manor House
Often referred to as our Bridal or Presidential Suite, The Paterson Suite is aptly named after the original owners of Blantyre. Conjuring the grand style of the gilded age period, the Master Suite appeals to the most discerning of guests.

Expansive living spaces and a grand, towering bath with a deep soaking tub, provides a glimpse into the daily life of this 1902 estate. With a commanding view of the Berkshire hills and the more immediate lawns and woodlands, the suite is architecturally and literally, the center of the house.

A period, crystal chandelier illuminates the luxuriously proportioned salon and king bedded room. An elegant boudoir features a wood burning fireplace and writing desk, as well as a half bath with shower.

The Carriage House
Pre-dating the Manor House and originally serving as the property’s Carriage House, this unique and charming collection of guest rooms is located adjacent to the Blantyre Spa and a mere 400 yards from the Manor House.

The rustic heritage and original details have been refurbished in a neutral palette to reflect our natural surroundings. Each guest room is named after one of the Berkshire’s gilded age “cottages”, and features a private balcony or garden terrace.

Enchanting period artwork, fine fabrics and an eclectic mixture of contemporary and antique furnishings provide a comfortable yet refined retreat.

Carriage House rooms boast a unique character, Matouk linens, Molton Brown Bath Products, distinctive welcome amenities and modern comforts such as wi-fi and large screen televisions.

The bedroom offers expansive space to relax and enjoy the view of the terrace as well as a full bath with a deep soaking tub.

The Cottages
Ideal for families and those preferring seclusion within the 110-acre estate, the cottages reflect an often whimsical yet refined accommodation.

Most with full kitchens and dining areas, all with private terraces and wood burning fireplaces, guests may enjoy views of the serene countryside, just a stone’s throw away from the Manor House.

The cottages are expansive yet cozy, with distinctive charm. Each cottage boasts a unique character, Matouk linens, Molton Brown Bath Products, welcome amenities and modern comforts such as wi-fi and large screen televisions.

The Old Bath House
Country chic in design, the Old Bath House is decorated in shades of coral, bisque and turquoise. A spacious living room opens onto a private terrace overlooking the wheat meadows. A cozy kitchen and dining area boasts American furniture and a charming pot-belly stove.

A king bed is adjacent to a lovely window seat which overlooks the perimeter gardens at the edge of the estate – ideal for reading any time of year. The Bathroom is comprised of a deep claw-footed soaking tub, walk-in shower and pedestal sink, with a spray of natural light from a petite window.
