THE HISTORY OF MUSTIQUE
Over fifty years ago Lord Glenconner, Colin Tennant, arrived on Mustique and bought the undeveloped island for just £45,000. There were no roads, no jetties and no running water. Lord Glenconner’s initial ambitions were to see his new estate thrive as a cotton plantation, however his plans were not successful and he looked for other ways to develop the island.

Having given his good friend Princess Margaret a plot in 1960 as a wedding present, there was considerable media interest in Mustique as a destination and in 1968 he formed the Mustique Company to develop a private island hideaway.

Two architects helped shape the island during its formative years; Arne Hasselqvist, a resourceful construction engineer from Sweden, and Oliver Messel, a leading British theatre set designer who had developed a reputation for the flamboyant and original houses he had designed on neighbouring Barbados.

Their first project was to convert the old cotton warehouse into a small hotel, The Cotton House, and to establish a design concept for the island as a whole. The idea was for the island to be split into plots and sold to shareholders who would invest equally in the island.

The Mustique Company which was subsequently formed limited the number of development plots and shareholders to a hundred and twenty. This was not only to preserve the island’s character but to retain exclusivity and prevent over-development.

Plots were bought by an eclectic group of socialites, rock stars, designers, and artists and private individuals brought together by an overriding desire to be part of something unique.

WATERSPORTS
There is an extensive range of watersports available on the island including scuba diving, snorkeling and Hobie Cat sailing. Visit our well stocked Watersports Centre located on Endeavour Bay where you can choose from boogie boards, stand up paddle boards and kayaks to explore the reefs beneath the sea. The equipment can even be dropped off at your favourite beach.

SWIMMING & BEACHCOMBING
There are many beaches to choose from on Mustique; Macaroni and Simplicity beaches situated on the north easterly side of the island offer more swell providing excellent surfing and body boarding conditions, whilst Lagoon, Gelliceaux and Endeavour Bay beaches on the south westerly aspect of the island offer calmer waters more suited to snorkeling and paddle boarding and are perfect for family swimming and picnicking.

PICNICS & BARBEQUES
Beach picnics are a huge part of life on Mustique. There are a number of dedicated areas nestled near the beaches or the tropical shoreline around the island where the hotel staff can prepare and set up a picnic for you.

VISITING NEIGHBOURING ISLANDS
Day trips visiting neighbouring islands are available by private charter or as part of an organised trip with options to snorkel, fish and to lunch on another island.

Visit the stunning marine conservation park at Tobago Cays, a pristine group of uninhabited islands where you can picnic, before swimming with the hawksbill turtles on the reef. You can also explore the neighbouring islands of Bequia, Canouan, Palm Island, Union Island and Petit St. Vincent too.

SCUBA DIVING
Mustique offers some of the best scuba diving in the Caribbean. With a dedicated team of professional PADI instructors and dive masters, and the latest dive equipment, we cater for beginners through to experienced divers.

SAILING
The waters around Mustique are renowned for their fabulous sailing conditions. Beginners and children can take lessons in the Hobie Cats in Endeavour Bay whilst more experienced sailors can charter a range of Schooners and Catamarans.

FISHING
The seas around Mustique offer a host of different species from salt water salmon and mackerel, jack, yellowtail snapper and barracuda, to deep-sea tuna, dorado (mahi-mahi), wahoo, sailfish and marlin.

Fishing trips can be arranged with our resident island fishermen who will provide the necessary boat and tackle. The island’s fish reserves are closely monitored as part of the island’s commitment to conservation and we work with the local fishermen to maintain a sustainable fishing programme.

TENNIS
The Mustique Tennis Club is one of the most important community hubs on the island, loved by owners, guests and island residents alike. There are six floodlit omni-courts. Use of the tennis courts is complimentary.

A range of tennis lessons and courses for all ages are available with our resident tennis coach, including daily drop-in games for those looking for social match play, with seasonal camps and tournaments in high season. Racquets, whites and tennis balls are available for purchase or hire at the Tennis Club Shop.

EQUESTRIAN CENTRE
Explore Mustique on horseback, trekking up into the hills to enjoy the many wonderful views or gallop through the surf on a choice of deserted beaches.

There are horses and ponies to suit all levels of experience and group or private lessons can be arranged. The very popular three-day pony camps for children are held throughout the year giving them the chance to learn about stable management and the daily care of their ponies.

GOLF
The neighbouring island of Canouan offers excellent golf facilities with an award-winning championship golf course designed by Jim Fazio. This is a golfer’s heaven with the dramatic coastal location creating a stunning and challenging course. Details of boat or plane transfers to Canouan are available on request.

FOR CHILDREN
Mustique is a haven for children of all ages. The island’s quiet nature and security allows teenagers to roam safely and spend time with newfound friends allowing parents to relax and unwind in confidence. For very young children there are nannies and child minders available to give parents some time to themselves.

Mustique has a dedicated Activities team who arrange an array of fun activities and events, such as drive in movie night, tennis, pony camp, beach picnics and treasure hunts, and kite flying competitions, which make the island of Mustique a blissful retreat for anyone looking for the perfect family escape.

HIKING TRAILS
Pick up a map and discover the extraordinary diversity in the island’s topography and vegetation. Early morning guided hikes are the perfect time to meet the island’s more reticent wildlife too. Our motto is to “Take only pictures, leave only footprints.”

CONSERVATION
The island community is committed to preserving Mustique and in 1989 an act was passed declaring the island of Mustique, together with its beaches, foreshore and surrounding waters to be within the Mustique Conservation Area.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMME
A specially formed Environmental Programme and Committee has been created to protect the Conservation area and the pristine environment of the island.

The committee, made up of villa owners and the island management, oversees the establishment and implementation of marine and land-based conservation projects, from turtle tagging and monitoring to responsible fishing, and most importantly educating future generations about the importance of island conservation.

Much of the island remains undeveloped leaving great swathes of natural habitat for the local wildlife. Some of the roads have been left as dirt tracks to minimize the footprint, and a comprehensive recycling programme has been initiated ensuring that all waste is environmentally treated and recycled.

TURTLES
These magnificent creatures are an enchanting sight, whether shuffling through the sand to lay their eggs in the cool dunes, or playfully gliding through the water as you snorkel side by side.

Mustique’s Turtle project is affiliated with Widecast, a specialist marine conservation group, which is dedicated to protecting the turtles within the Caribbean Sea and to raising awareness for their preservation.

The two types of turtle most commonly found in the Caribbean are the Hawksbill and the Leatherback. Our resident island guides regularly patrol the beaches, monitoring egg laying, and safely relocating nests to nurture hatchlings, before they are ready to leave for the safety of the water.

During the nesting season of May to October guests are invited to get involved and may be lucky enough to see a nesting or a hatchling release during their stay.

LOBSTERS
Lobster fishing is prohibited between May and August, during the spawning season, to preserve their numbers. Please help us and our precious resources and do not buy lobster from the fishermen during this period.

LOCAL COMMUNITY
The island has established a range of services for the local community including a primary school, medical clinic, library and thriving church community.

The Primary School has over 300 students aged from five to eleven who are taught by local and international teachers whilst a range of adult education programmes are taught in the community centre to encourage employment both on the island and further afield.

THE MUSTIQUE CHARITABLE TRUST
With enthusiastic philanthropic goals the island wanted to do something for the local community of Mustique and St Vincent and the Grenadines and in 2008 the Mustique Charitable Trust was formed.

Financed by donations from the Mustique Company, villa owners and guests, the Trust has helped the children, youths and vulnerable adults of St. Vincent & the Grenadines with housing initiatives, educational programmes, grants and bursaries to universities in the region and abroad.
