ATTRACTIONS
Located on the north-eastern coast of Sri Lanka, Trincomalee is celebrated for its golden beaches which include the likes of Nilaveli and Uppuveli.

Renowned for being one the world’s finest natural deep-water harbours, ‘Trinco’ – as it is fondly referred to – has been admired by explorers and coveted by colonial invaders for centuries. It is steeped in history and blessed with unearthly beauty.

The towering Fort Frederick is testament to the strong influence of the Dutch colonists who once ruled this part of the island.

Within it thick stone walls is Swami Rock, atop which lies the ancient Koneswaram Temple – a Hindu holy site dedicated to the God Shiva. The popular Lover’s Leap can also be found within its confines.

With its pristine beaches, which rank among the most picturesque on the island, Trinco is a destination celebrated for its water sports.

Pigeon Island is a charming rock islet off the white sandy beaches of Nilaveli. A short boat ride takes you to this scenic island, famous for snorkeling and the iconic Blue Rock Pigeons who gather there to breed.

Amongst the numerous attractions in Trincomalee is also the seven hot water springs in Kanniya. The waters in these wells are of varying temperatures and are believed to be rich in therapeutic properties.

Uga Jungle Beach offers travellers the perfect base of operations, as it is located just minutes from all the Trincomalee attractions that make up its allure.

HOT SPRINGS TRINCOMALEE
Steeped in lore and myth, the hot springs of Kanniya are located just five miles north-west of Trincomalee and about half a mile off the Anuradhapura Road. Seven hot springs of varying temperatures are found at the site and are considered to contain healing properties.

The origins of the hot springs in Trincomalee are deeply rooted in folklore. Numerous tales of its beginnings exist; some believe that Lord Vishnu created the wells for King Ravana to perform the last rites for his allegedly deceased mother Kanniya.

Others say that King Ravana himself struck the rock with his sword seven times after which the springs appeared. This mysterious geological wonder has been a place of devotion and of curiosity to devotees and travellers alike.

LOVERS LEAP TRINCOMALEE
The story of Lover’s Leap Trincomalee is a sorrowful tale of unrequited love. A true story attested by an inscription on a pillar on Swami Rock, it follows Francina van Reed, the daughter of a gentleman of rank in the civil service of Holland.

She was engaged to a young Dutch officer who broke off the engagement upon the end of his foreign service and returned to Holland. Forsaken and distraught, she watched atop Swami Rock as the vessel carrying her faithless lover passed beyond the horizon.

Overcome by sorrow, she flung herself from the rock into the violent sea below – a sheer drop of 400 feet. A pillar set up on the promontory records the fateful date of the tragedy that has since propelled the location to notoriety – 24 April, 1687.

KONESWARAM TEMPLE
400 feet above the sea, at the southern extremity of the peninsula that separates the inner from the outer Trincomalee harbour, lies a magnificent temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Referred to by European writers of the 18th and 19th centuries as the ‘Temple of a Thousand Pillars’, it is a site revered by Hindu pilgrims.

According to legend, a Hindu Prince sailed to Sri Lanka to erect a temple to Shiva on Swami Rock, after he learnt from the Puranas that it was a fragment of the holy Mount Meru. The temple became popularly known as Koneswaram Temple Trincomalee.

As it is one of the main harbours in which seafarers in the Bay of Bengal laid anchor, Trincomalee is believed to be a settlement of early Indo-Aryan migrants. The Pallava, Pandyan, and Chola dynasties are believed to have lavished the temple with wealth to maintain it in all its splendour.

Once one of the most frequented places of worship in the region, in 1622, the Portuguese General Constantine de Saa razed the temple to the ground and used its hallowed stones to build Fort Frederick, which still stands today.

Since then, a temple was built within the fort walls and is highly venerated by Hindus and Buddhist pilgrims alike.
